Chris Hemsworth is totally used to skating by on a pretty smile. His fashion sense screams “Surfer boy who accidentally got a real job” on just about every red carpet.
Luke, as someone who has sewn garments for 60 years, let me say this. All stripes should match, all checks should match, all plaids should match as much as possible. Always. On every garment. Nothing looks cheaper than plaids that dont match at the seams. Now, bust darts can throw off matching but matching woven designs occurs during the laying out of the master pattern on the fabric before cutting. Its not a haute couture thing, its a thing that should happen all the time. It takes more fabric so you can expect to pay more than $12.99 for your plaid/check/striped items. People buy the cheap mismatched garments so this is on the customer. Demand better, buy better.
I feel the same way today about plaid wrapping paper, everything must match or it will look tacky. I grew up knowing plaid matched , stripes along the shoulder matched up with the sleeves , pleats had the exact space between them. today at 72 have no idea what they are trying to wear.
The reason the stripes line up so well on the Gerwig/Margela dress is because the grain of the fabric is the same for top and bottom. The stripes on the reference imagine can never line up because the bodice is cut on the straight grain and the skirt is bias cut. So the skirt stripes are slightly wider where they meet the stripes on the bodice. Having said that, the construction on this dress is pure... chef's kiss. Also Luke, I say it again... you are a national treasure. Love, love, love your intelligent, researched and well thought-out commentary.
I don't think so, it's just a different dress code for the photocalls and the red carpet. The red carpet is still formal, "opera-like", and the photocall outfits are more relaxed = the beach !
Cannes has a very specific style which is a classiness mixed with a bit of inspo from the Côte d'Azur which I think many stylists can't capture. It's classy with an ease that you don't see in other venues whether it's a photo call or red carpet. It is never as casual or fashion forward as other festivals or events but it has a very specific style.
I agree Greta has the best look with that simple but precise striped dress that evoked Cannes and daytime summer vibes. After I hoped she went to the beach and had an ice cream cone to complete the look in it's perfect setting.
I love Greta in the Margiela dress. A normal looking woman in a gorgeous dress. She directs, she can have her beer and burger, and not be a sample size.
lol, tbh when I saw Bella Hadid’s dress, all I could think of was “Bella’s boobies don’t make me wish I could wear that dress.” I mean, if you look like Bella Hadid, rock whatever you want, I suppose, you’ll look good no matter what. But the dress itself…
I am absolutely obsessed with Greta Gerwig's look. Can we talk about how, when looked at from a distance, they've utilised the stripes to create like an effect? Stunning. Perfect.
Is it still a front slit if it’s over one leg rather than centered (she asks while watching the video and hemming a sundress with a slit over the left leg)? Greta Gerwig’s dress: if you look closely you can see that the stripes line up so nicely on the bodice because the shaping is done by sewing the blue stripes edge to edge into tucks, with the white stripe inside the tucks. So the neckline is all tucks that then open up to form the bust cups, then are sewn closed again to form the shaping at the waist. It’s really lovely.
That Margiela dress on Greta Gerwig was amazing. And, yes, completely agree that it was made to perfection. How the stripes just lined up was true craftsmanship at work. On the other end look at a Chanel classic flap now and see how the stitching is not aligned… not even at the back pocket.
Love the Greta Gerwig dress, but those tabbies are more like cow hooves than horses. Horses have a solid hoof, with no split-cows and goats have split hooves. Horse girlies can’t let that go…. Tabbies are fun, but they DON’T look like horses…. 😂
As someone who has constructed a dress with this type of pinstriping detail, I can attest to how time consuming it is to get those stripes to line up. The number of stick pins alone to keep everything from moving is astronomical and the resulting stab wounds from slip stitching seams in place while working around said pins, I thought I was going to faint from the blood loss. It took me months to complete a gown created with this patterning technique. It was exquisite but NEVER AGAIN! LOL!
Hey Luke! Selena Gomez gowns neckline is called "portrait." (My wedding gown 1990) Another great episode! I'm a 60 yr. old 🇺🇸 fan!🧓🏻 I ❤️your commentary!😊
that Iris van Herpen dress, I'm obsessed with its clean lines, the impeccable craftsmanship, not one tread out of line. such perfection, give a huge rise to the seamstresses!

If anyone cares, I think that the late Deborah Mitford (who was the youngest of the celebrated/infamous Mitford sisters) may have been the inspiration for Uma Thurman's Chatsworth House dress 42:40 Deborah was the (previous) Duchess of Devonshire, having married the Duke (c 1950s?). The Devonshire family still own and live in Chatsworth House. Confusingly, the house is situated in Derbyshire (a northern county in England) and *not* Devonshire (which is an old name for Devon, a southwest England county). Chatsworth House was used as Mr Fitzwilliam Darcy's family seat (= main house) in the 1990s BBC television adaptation of "Pride and Prejudice", with Colin Firth and Jennifer Ehle. I'm not a monarchist. I just live in Yorkshire (a neighbouring north England county), so I know all of this, without the Googleforce. Praise be.
Perfectly matching the fabric pattern used to be the standard for clothes or furniture. You just never would see an unaligned pattern even in homemade clothing
In Argentina we've come to realize that the Anya Taylor-Joy Dior gown looks like a homage to Eva Perón, she wore something similar and the hair matches as well
The folds near Anya’s waist are definitely not well placed. Though I don’t mind if the pot belly/post pregnancy/menopausal belly look comes into fashion. I would definitely celebrate that
margaret qualley’s pink channel look totally reminds me of the dress in pretty in pink and what a letdown it was. I LOVE that Naomi Campbell looks better now than she did in the 90s. I love Uma Thurman’s look and think Lily Gladstone looks great in yellow. Yseult looks AMAZING! I think her look is even better than the original look. The eyeshadow look is a wonderful update.
Honestly, those pants look like they were the same color as the jacket and waistcoat, but he washed them a few times and the color faded and became dingey. Not a good look.
Uma's frayed edge is everything on that classic silhouette. It looks like a muslin mockup to try a new beaded or embroidered design where they would paint on the design. I love the "workman" step of it as if it was never meant to leave the atelier.

I agree about front slits. Somehow they just dont look right to me. Love it on the side or over one leg. It shows the inside of the thighs not the thigh
Naomi Campbell wearing the same dress she wore almost 30yrs ago is SUCH a "You could never" moment! Who on this earth is the same size they were in the early 90s?! I want a fundraiser ball where A-list celebs wear their prom dresses refashioned now

Really liked the video, but I couln´t get over how you called a cloven (split) hoof a horse hoof. There are a lot of animals with cloven hoofs, but horses are not one of them
