My son likes to listen to the Liquid Metal channel on SiriusXM. I have learned about many bands that I had never heard of, having grown up in the ‘60s. I got to know the name of the band because, if I remember correctly, they would appear on the “Bloody Roots” show. Of course, I had no idea what they looked like. With a name like Gojira, I assumed they were Japanese, which I found interesting. When the opening ceremony was televised, I thought what a great idea to have a metal style band play “in” the Conciergery’s windows. My son heard them, came in to watch, and exclaimed “That’s Gojira!”. I asked him, why would the French have a Japanese band playing in the opening ceremony? He quickly explained that they were French. A great performance! The accolades they received were well earned. 👏👏. And, now I know they’re French!

I saw these guys play at a bar in 2011 or 2012 when Hour of Penance had to drop out due to some trouble with their visas. They had played Hellfest for, I think, the first or second time prior to that tour and still rocked a 75 person show as hard as a festival stage. They deserve every bit of success that has come to them and I 'm glad they decided to do the Olympic gig.
I am a 75 year old woman. I had never heard of Gojira before the Olympics. I thought they were freaking awesome! Today I was having PT and I asked my therapist if he had watched the Olympic’s opening and seen Gojira. The guy on the table next to me came alive and said “You listen to Gojira?!?! Super cool! Great representation of the metal community. I love what he said about the metal community being open minded and tolerant. I've met so many great people at metal shows. Very proud to be part of the metal community and all the talent, tolerance and passion it represents!
It wouldn't be metal without a little bit if controversy. That's the beauty of counterculture. It challenges the status quo, and is historically very politically progressive. I think about 80s glam and hair metal bands being dudes wearing makeup and dresses. Scandinavian black metal bands protesting cultural erasure by Christians. Nu Metal of the 90s and 2000s criticizing the education system, the prison system, and promoting mental health awareness. It's only through counterculture that these progressive ideas get pushed into public consciousness. There are still some pop artists pushing counterculture and challenging norms, but it's the DNA of metal to be controversial.
The controversy was not directed towards Gojira, at all. The (rightful) shitstorm is against the blasphemy of the last supper and the degeneracy of the western civilization, which happened hours later.
Whoever planned this part of the show and wanted Gojira up there and got it greenlit by the officials. The metal community owes you a lifetime support of beer, love and happines.

I had no idea Gojira would be playing. What an awesome surprise! They rocked!
I've heard folks saying they were annoyed with Kelly Clarkson's reaction, but personally enjoy it when someone gets hit with a new paradigm. It's like watching Nightwish reactions, I got the impression that she was genuinely overwhelmed by it and had her mind open to a new and wonderful thing.
Same!! I loved how overwhelmed she was , I would have been the same, it was touching
Great interview!
Bought a ticket to see Korn 3 months ago just because Gojira is opening for them. Happy to see them getting more fans!
I'm not even terribly familiar with their work, but their performance was absolutely fantastic, and the historical components to the song was great as well. I would love for them to do a whole symphonic metal album with this song on it.👍👍👍
C'était énorme ! Je connais Gojira depuis 20 ans, là c'est l'apothéose
So proud of these guys finally getting an audience they deserve and carrying the flag of metal
The best performance. Best thing thats ever happened to the Olympics. Biggest metal performance ever, glad it went to the best metal band ever.
Gojira!! you rocked!! there will always be people picking at everything, ignore them. You did metal an honor in your performance.
Well...... they have a brand new 59 year old fan in America.
If I can be a Rammstein fan for over the last 25 years, I can be a Gojira fan too!
I saw Gojira open for Rammstein in Quebec City in 2016 :) fantastic show from both bands
@@beck13xs no doubt 😁
Easily, musically Gojira is better than Rammstein
@@dignouhagstromdegilead29 most definitely. Rammstein was my favourite band until I saw Gojira's performance. Gojira quickly overtook that position for me.
I have enjoyed Gojira's musical catalog for several years. This was a wonderful interview and we all could learn from their experience of being open minded. Unforgettable performance and a cherished memory for me. Keep grooving, head-moving, and loving to all of my metal friends. 🎶
Gojira is a hard working band and thier music is awesome. Good for them! 🤘 Their time is now! 😉
Legendary. Every Gojira fan and metalhead is SO PROUD of you guys ❤
It’s amazing to think that I saw this band on a side stage in Somerset Wisconsin and a sold out show at 1st Ave in Minneapolis (aka the house of Prince), and they completely melted my face both times - and now they’ve played in front of a billion people.
Couldn’t have happened to a more talented, hard working and deserving group of dudes
I'm speechless, GOJIRA IS AWESOME!
No other band could do this job better than GOJIRA.
You guys deserve this! Maravillosoooooooo!!! 🤘💝👍
Damn I love these guys, not only are they the best metal band out right now they are awesome people too.
I love them. I love this. Great interview, great guy, great time for them. Never been so proud to be a fan of a band.
This will be played at every Gojira show ever, from now on. I guess we won't get the castle very often, but we get Gojira, which is just so friggin awesome. I've been watching like 20 different react videos.
It's just so cool!
Absolute kick-ass song and performance.
Gojira playing the Olympics in the way they did, is one of the most metal thing I have ever seen in my life. And the theme, was and is metal af.
Gotta say, this is a very short interview but a very good one. The interviewer asked pretty much everything I wanted to know here. Very good work.
This was one of my highlights of these olympics. Great performance, really tasty art. Probably the most metal thing i have seen.
What you did for the metal community was major. Loved your performance I saw it live after work and was blown away and cheering to the sports bar dismay that I was at.
Y'all have made me and the METAL community happy and proud!!!
I saw Gojira play in 2007 in Newport, Wales. With an audience of maybe 5000 people. To see where they are now is absolutely incredible!
By far the best moment from the whole ceremony. Sorry Celine, but Gojira were the real highlight of the show!
Mario is such a pure soul 😊
That blew my mind! I heard about it, and assumed the band played on a football field or something. Incredible!
Seeing Gojira involved in the OL is something Ill never forget. Well done!
France should give a massive raise to those hardworking committees that successfully convinced Gojira to open for Olympics!
This reminded me of a Dethklok performance with the castle platforms and the blood portrayal, it was great and made me love Gojira even more
I am a 75 year old woman. I had never heard of Gojira before the Olympics. I thought they were freaking awesome! Today I was having PT and I asked my therapist if he had watched the Olympic’s opening and seen Gojira. The guy on the table next to me came alive and said “You listen to Gojira?!?! I’ve seen them live!. They are awesome!” Indeed!
I had heard of Gojira before, but after that performance, I am a new fan. That was f***ing incredible!
This was an absolute honour for the metal community!!
Great work, mario. I am really your fan. You, joe, jean and cristian are revolutionars. I'm a brazilian philosopher and i follow your works since 2017.
Fantastic interview!!! Great Questions and no interruptions!
This reaction video from Mario is gold, thanks a lot!!!!
Metal community is so proud of Gojira! 🤘🏻
This was absolutely a moment in history for metal
The metal community is toxic as hell, just look at all these "professional" UA-cam reviewers.
@@HeavyMetalMayhem Only if you're a drama queen....
@@HeavyMetalMayhem Only on social media. Never out there on shows and festivals. Don't give the toxic people attention.
@@HeavyMetalMayhem all music fanbases will have their rotten apples... especially religious ones.
The controversy was not directed towards Gojira, at all. The (rightful) shitstorm is against the blasphemy of the last supper and the degeneracy of the western civilization, which happened hours later.
The metal version of Queen at Live Aid 1985.
It was amazing, gojira is the perfect metal band.
YOu was amazing guys. Thank you.
Gojira literally carried the whole olympic opening
They've come so far since when i first saw them with scar symmetry a long time ago, so happy and proud for them
Gojira were outstanding! They deserved this so much 🙏🤘🖤
Yeah that was amazing 🤣 You can tell he's thrilled and very proud. He should be! It's super cool!
I remember when Joe had to do all the talking in interviews. Mario's English is great now.
One the best drummers of one of the best bands ever and yet very humble and modest
