Fun fact about plastic straws and turtles: there has been exactly one (1) documented case of a straw getting stuck in a sea-turtles nose, ever. All the pictures thrown around are from that one case; and there are zero cases of straws killing sea life. It's quite literally a fit of mass hysteria.

I figured it was mass hysteria. Stupid fast food places started giving out those terrible paper straws complete with plastic lids. Plastic garbage is a genuine problem... but straws in particular? No. Not really.

The 80s kid in me is like: "How did we end up with this $h!t???" And the fact that I can't openly make fun of these people because of the forced restraint destroys me.
The paper straw thing is a purely emotional decision. The video of the turtle you describe is very graphic (poor turtle), but it has a caveat: this is a pretty rare incident. While it looks cruel, turtles get way more often in trouble by eating plastic bags (which they mistake for jellyfish), and way WAY more often get caught in old fish nets. Because plastic straws are a minuscule amount of the plastic swimming in the ocean. It is a lot more paper bags and basically 80% old fish nets. And even if we want to say that every bit counts, the straw from New York will rarely end up in the ocean. Instead other countries who don't give a shit about the environment, still have plastic straws and still continue to dump their garbage into the ocean en masse. This is a purely emotional farce.
It is inconsiderate for alabaster children to use playground equipment when BIPoC are present. They should wait until the other children leave. I, personally, think it might just be best to give them their own parks.

I disagree. I’ve been a fan of dev for a while now. When I first started following Dev I was also a libertarian and agreed with Dev on a lot. But as time has gone on, I’ve gone left while Dev stayed the same. While a lot of the anger can be from right wingers not realizing Dev is a libertarian I think a lot of it is that his audience is changing and not understanding how Dev isn’t. What you said about having to work to get good at your craft so that you can have those creative jobs is absolutely true. It took me a bit over a decade before my UA-cam channel was making good money. 9.5 years of that I was doing a minimum of a video a day, but usually more like 11 videos a week. I was working more than 40 hours a week for less than minimum wage for a very, very long time. Now I make enough money to pay both my rent and my mum's rent. I got to the point where I could take care of the people I cared about, but I had to put in years and years of work with very little to show for it. Most of those videos didn't make me any money, but they made for great practice so I could hone my craft for when people DID find me. And what do you know, when they found me they liked what they found! It's because I worked hard and got better over a long period of time! You have to work hard, you have to work more than 40 hours a week, and you have to be willing to see no return on your investment for a large chunk of your life. That's just the reality of how you become a "UA-cam person". Yeah some people do trends and get popular faster, but they usually burn out faster too since they didn't have that extended period of earning what they have to learn how to handle it. It took me a very long time and a lot of work to get to where I am. What I learned during that very long period of being a small UA-camr is the reason why I haven't burned out and still love my job. If you want a creative job where you have no boss and can work from home, then you've also gotta pick up the skill set of every employee you'd be passing tasks off to if you were doing the same job for a company. You can drop some money and get freelancers to do some of the work for you, but that's just spending your money to keep you from learning a skill. It's probably better that you learn it yourself. You've got until you're dead to learn it all, so get learning! If you really do wanna do this for a living, then put 100% into it.
Without TikTok, do you think the friendless, depressed, and emotionally stunted individuals of our generation would be forced to interact with the world around them? I genuinely wish for these people to find conflict or companionship. Literally anything has to be better than using TikTok (or any social media) as a pseudo relationship. While there have been a lot of benefits; I think the internet was a mistake.
yes, they would interact more with the real world. social media (and the entire phone at this point) overstimulates, so many people would rather be on their lonesome with a device than with friends or family because the stimulation is way stronger and it pleases the monkey brain more than social interaction. at some point you have to detox in order to enjoy social interaction again. of course, there are other factors like the fact that most of your friends are now IN the phone, you don't even have to go out in order to see them, and shitty families do exist so people will try to escape through the phone, since it's more immediate. it's a sad state of affairs. i love the invention of the internet, but it does make me depressed thinking about what it's doing to me and my generation.

The strange thing about those paper-straws, there is a chinese-food at a foodcourt in my mall that uses bio-degradable plastic straws. Really makes me wonder why we didn't push that instead and kept the papercups. But that just makes too much sense, I guess.
aside from other issues like higher cost, "bio-degradable" doesn't mean they instantly become part of nature when thrown away, the term is also used in a way that can only be described as greenwashing
I prefer to drink things without a straw anyway. And for people who do prefer straws, I think it'd be better for everyone involved if they just used their own reusable metal straws.
I read a while back that the uproar over plastic straws started right after some kids invented a plastic straw that changes colors if a drink has been spiked with chemicals that shouldn't belong in it. honestly wouldn't surprise me if it was true.
so you're saying the timeline looks like: kids make anti-roofie straw some idiot, maybe even a plant, shoves a plastic straw into a turtle's nose and posts it online people use that post to create an outrage and start banning plastic straws when in reality they are just for people getting roofied, for some unkowable reason.
Most of the "artsy creative" types I know work much more gruelling hours than a 9 - 5. Also to be fair, I don't particularly care for 9 - 5s myself, but not from a "I don't want to work" perspective, more from a "Why do I have to stay here, working slower and less productively to fill the time when I could be done by 12." I still do not understand jobs that don't allow me to finish the work and leave, if they did, I'd happily smash out the work in the most efficient manner, deal a chunk or two into any backlog that's built up/help out co-workers and then go home. (at least in jobs that you can do that kind of thing)
Pretty much the reason why I stay at my current job. I don't mind work, it isn't laziness, it's being bored out of my mind waiting for something to do that drives me nuts. Yea that young girl with pinkish orange haired is right (not the freak after her). I have been working since I was 18 and am middle aged now. I worked with some independents comic book companies when I was young, did some concept art with no pay for a starting game company, and all of them went under. Mostly because us poor boys running the company had to work jobs to live and it got in the way of the company. We never started out with money or were from a middle class or affluent family so we failed. In fact the boring ass job with no meaning always gets in the way of my dreams it seems. When I am in between jobs I am the most prolific with my art, when I am working a job I'm dead inside. I can't believe the meaning of live is for billionaires to have wage slaves until their 67 years old. It's sad that when I'm 67 my real life will begin, but while I be too old and depleted by then? When she says she will die what she means is once you realize that society has made this the prescription for life until you are 67 (and even then you may still have to work) then life itself becomes meaningless. There isn't anything to look forward to, nothing creative, nothing interesting and not enough time to explore your options as many people have to work overtime or multiple jobs to make ends meat. Once you realize there is no way out of being a rat in this race you no longer value this life. And this poor girl doesn't understand that this only gets worse as you get older.
Honestly, kinda surprised that someone didn't just make a sipping hole on the lid like the coffee cup lids instead of trying to make paper straws a thing.

4:00 - okay, I suppose I could be wrong about this, but I don't feel like gender dysphoria is what's leaving this person sobbing to a bank teller on a telephone. I feel like that's the kind of reaction you get from people with PTSD when they are surprised by a trigger. It's a tangible, explainable trauma, I mean. But gender dysphoria? C'mon. People cry over crap like that because society tells them that's how they can get their way. And it's not just this person. It's the Karens in department stores going nuts because they won't accept her return. It's the people calling the police when McDonalds accidentally shorts them a single chicken nugget. They get signals from their world that it will tolerate them if they make everyone else's life hard enough, so they do it.
You are wrong. You're severely underestimating what "gender dysphoria" feels like. It isn't PTSD, but it IS tangible for those who suffer it. It's not just "wishing you were the opposite gender", it's feeling, at all times, a disconnect with the body you're in. It's a constant discomfort in a world that constantly reminds you that you lost the coin toss. It's a revulsion of the body you have, of striving to try and make what you were given, fit what you need your body to be to feel that comfort that normal people feel in their own skin by default. And when it's not enough, when everything you've done and tried isn't working, when you don't pass and normal people only see you as what you were born as, it's painful. When you don't pass, it's a reminder that everything you've done, the pain, the stress, the mental anguish and discomfort you've dealt with constantly just by trying to live your life more comfortably, has all been in vain. And that's enough to make someone break down sobbing. You're lucky you don't understand it, because it means you don't have to experience it, or don't have anyone close to you that has experienced it. I wouldn't even wish this feeling on my worst enemy.

A stand in,an idealized version,is necessary just to fantasize doing stuff. A deep rejection of oneself. You mean something along these lines?
@junichiroyamashita Something like that. I can't speak for how everyone experiences it, but I know it to feel like there's much less agency involved. I would say it's more of a drain than a detachment. A disconnect, surely, but rather than feeling like you're looking at someone else, it's like being inside a cage and staring at the bars. There's a contempt, but only because you can't feel any differently. There's no comfort in your reflection. Maybe revulsion, maybe disgust, but it's a stem of malcontentment. And maybe that's on the milder side. I think "a rejection of oneself" is wrong, simply because there's an inability to accept oneself as how they are, rather than making the choice to do so. For me, I would much rather accept myself and the face I see in the mirror, than suffer. But I can't. It just feels wrong and off, like wearing ill-fitting, unflattering clothes, maybe. And there's no other way to really explain the feeling with more accuracy, at least none that comes to mind at the moment.
I'm not working, myself. Been on disability for 10 years, tried hard to find a job, tried some stuff, free internships, government programs trying to integrate me into the system, I genuinely tried, wasn't lazy, even did unpaid work that I am medically not allowed to do that had some pretty bad health consequences on my already shitty situation, until eventually the official places said they're gonna take me off the hook and leave me alone. And I do feel privileged to live in a country, and to have the opportunity to share a home with someone, where that situation isn't easy, but isn't a constant suffering and I can occasionally buy some luxury stuff. Super thankful for that. Just saying that to give context to why I haven't experienced a 9-to-5 kinda job (well, aside from the unpaid shit I did to try and get into one, some of which had longer work days than even that, but didn't last very long). Given that, I really feel for people who have to work such jobs and for what that actually realistically means. I absolutely get the frustration. Not just that someone has to do work they might not have any real passion for, for so many hours, 5+ days a week, for pay that often doesn't feel like it's really fair compensation. But what sucks the most is that, even when people suck it up and do it, and do it well, they still get shafted. Depending on the job, there's unpaid overtime, there's layoffs hanging over their heads sometimes, there's other kinds of chicanery that make it difficult for those employees to feel appreciated and respected. And then, to top it all off, they're pushing hard on on-site work even in cases where that's not even really necessary and things could be done just as well from home, which I think would frustrate me even more. It's one thing to trade your free time from 9AM to 5PM in exchange for pay, but on top of that you have your daily commute to take into account. So you get up hours before you start working, have to make sure you're fully presentable and workplace appropriate, drive to work for like 30 minutes at least and often quite a bit longer than that, do your 9-to-5, take another 30 minutes (or way longer) to drive back home, and only then are you free to do with your time what you want. Unless you have to run some errands as well... or god forbid you have a family to take care of. Before you know it, you notice you're too tired to do anything enjoyable anymore, so you just grab a drink, put on some bullshit on TV that you don't care about and exist there until you go to bed, just for your sleep to be rudely interrupted by your alarm clock reminding you to rinse and repeat. I know this is a normal reality for thousands, and has been for a long time, and is arguably better than how things used to be for our grandparents, great-grandparents and so on, but I can't blame anyone for finding that existence utterly miserable and not wanting to live like that at all. And I feel like there's gotta be ways to structure our society and work culture in some kinda way that improves the average employee's life and has more space for oneself. I'm not getting at anything here. I don't have an answer for this. No clue what that way would be. But I sincerely hope there'll be some kind of shift eventually. Because god, that shit must suck, especially when you know you're probably gonna be stuck with that until you either die or you're too old and too used to this routine to really enjoy your retirement.
I feel so bad for the poor puppy on the chain of that rather rotund woman. You know damn well that poor puppy is never going to get taken for a walk not once.

They're covered in paper to make them more insulated/easy to hold. The plastic starbucks cups are just as recyclable as the paper cups are.
I'm fairly certain recent studies came out and shown that chemicals they put into most paper straws are pretty bad for you, and that they might not even be entirely biodegradable. Plastic bans were just a feel-good change, it didn't really accomplish anything or solve the root of the problem. Obviously you should try not to use disposable plastics if you can, but paper straws as they are now are just replacing a problem with a different problem. You should avoid those as well.
The solution to paper straws is to have the cover be that design that allows you to drink straight from the cup but for some reason that never caught on.

Judging by how much you argue with your chat, Dev, influencing your audience isn't something you have to worry about.
I've never seen a creator and their audience so at odds. He's courted a lot of right wing people simply because he speaks out against leftist crap while he stays stuck in the old liberal worldview. No wonder dev has increasingly be less charitable to the right I would be too if I had to deal with the worst of em on my channel. I'm definitely more on devs side on this one but I can see how unhealthy both ways this relationship is. Don't see it getting any better it's gonna become increasingly hostile as both sides have irreconcilable differences and speak past each other.
I mean I dont think it's courting, right wing follow dev thinking he's a right wing mouthpiece then when he says something negative about them they get angry and hate him for not being right wing enough when he never was that to begin with
Lastly I will say the only time I was at odds with dev is when he said the guy shooting the prankster who was harrasing him was overreacting
I disagree. I’ve been a fan of dev for a while now. When I first started following Dev I was also a libertarian and agreed with Dev on a lot. But as time has gone on, I’ve gone left while Dev stayed the same.

The Internet was not a mistake. Normalizing the Internet as a safe place for everybody and everything was a mistake.
yes, they would interact more with the real world. social media (and the entire phone at this point) overstimulates, so many people would rather be on their lonesome with a device than with friends or family because the stimulation is way stronger and it pleases the monkey brain more than social interaction. at some point you have to detox in order to enjoy social interaction again.
of course, there are other factors like the fact that most of your friends are now IN the phone, you don't even have to go out in order to see them, and shitty families do exist so people will try to escape through the phone, since it's more immediate. it's a sad state of affairs. i love the invention of the internet, but it does make me depressed thinking about what it's doing to me and my generation.

@junichiroyamashita Something like that. I can't speak for how everyone experiences it, but I know it to feel like there's much less agency involved.
Because god, that shit must suck, especially when you know you're probably gonna be stuck with that until you either die or you're too old and too used to this routine to really enjoy your retirement.
lol if I was called an "alabaster" I'd take it as a compliment
I feel so bad for the poor puppy on the chain of that rather rotund woman. You know damn well that poor puppy is never going to get taken for a walk not once.
They think that plastic straws are thrown on the street or something, that's why they refuse to use plastic straws. But for some reason they don't believe that plastic cups are thrown on the ground, which is often the case, usually with a paper straw in it (eco win, I guess..?).
Speaking as someone who lives near the water and an endangered species area- ie where all restaurants have to carry biodegradable straws- one of my favorite paper straw alternatives is agave straws. Obviously, they’re straws made from agave plants, and they offer the exact same experience as drinking from a plastic straw because it takes two weeks for them to naturally break down.
Props to the girl for being cool and not freaking out because a bank representative misgendered her, she is one of the real ones. That being said, a grown person shouldn't cry because someone called you the wonrg pronuns, and you don't make a video aboout you crying and then put it online...
Dev you are the only personality I’ll accept slop from, we appreciate you
Pyrocynical?
All he has done is adjust his videos/channel for more left-leaning people. He's not even that centrist anymore from the 2010s with actual good political commentary. You can appreciate him for his "work" but to be honest he shouldn't be respected.
The Alabaster master race.
I like it. Its got a ring to it.
2 things:
1. Its disgusting that the racist seems to take pride and thinks he is tough for bullying a child and calling it racist names. Lets see how she handles an adult.
2. I'm an actor. I have success I've tons of theater and some film. I work a 9-5 and yeah it can be soul crushing some weeks. BUT Dev is right you gotta make the time in your spare time to fulfill that creativity need. Its hard but its what you need to do if you are truly passionate about it and want to succeed in it.
GTA 6 has absolutely no hope of making fun of the world like the previous games did. As this video demonstrates, reality is far beyond parody at this point, plus we all know there's a list of certain topics and characteristics that are off the table because Rockstar don't want backlash from crazies.
From Wikipedia: "Black alabaster" is a rare anhydrite form of the gypsum-based mineral. This black form is found in only three veins in the world, one each in United States, Italy, and China.
I don't actually mind paper straws. But to be fair it's possible American paper straws are just lower quality
BRUH THE WOMAN COMPLAINING ABOUT NOT BEING ABOE TO DO CREATIVE TASKS IS ACTUALLY SOMEONE I BRIEFLY TALKED TO EARLIER THIS YEAR😭😭😭
Dev, reacting to a TikTok: "This woman has way too much time on her hands"
1:32 Why not give a paper cup and a plastic straw?
Because the paper cups also have plastic in them for the lining. They're not actually paper all the way through. They're covered in paper to make them more insulated/easy to hold.
The plastic starbucks cups are just as recyclable as the paper cups are.
2:24 bring the monster neodymium magnet!
You say "pictures" of the turtles. THERE WAS ONLY THE SINGLE ONE TURTLE! IT'S ALL THE SAME TURTLE!
Merry Christmas Dev
Lol the priests said "that's what you're going out with."
I think he knew it was his last day alive.
6:25 Whatever car that is, that would make a great commercial for it, proving the incredible towing capacity it has
We’ve been past the parody inversion point for at least 5 years now.
Finally, the quality content comes back!
The solution to paper straws is to have the cover be that design that allows you to drink straight from the cup but for some reason that never caught on.
its because they're shitty 9 times out of 10. If the lid isn't sealed tight, your drinks going all over you
Ikr people are such babies about those lids
why not buy your own metal straw and just use that, you can clean it and stuff. or just don't drink with straws lol it's way easier
How the fuck am i going to drink my milkshake out of a lid? ITS SEMI SOLID MAN
@@mr.jackstone9256
YOU VILL EAT ZE SOFT DRINK
YOU VILL NOT EAT ZE MILKSHAKE
AND YOU VILL BE HAPPY
IT IZ FÜR DE GUT OF ZE KLIMATE
Thank you for that bit about creatives. I've been trying to get a career off the ground, thanks for the advice!
Lol alabaster is a pretty fine and nice looking material. The kind of thing you could build monuments and a society around.
Yeesh, that thumbnail reminded me of being at Venice Beach. Every idiot trying to stand out in a crowd.
I think the lyrics should be "I'm a little trans girl, short and cute, but unfortunately, I look like Dwight Schrute"
I'm not sure I can handle 9-5s either. But yeah I understand this is a curse that I'm accepting for potential greener pastures
it can always be worse,
and for most of history it was
4:33 SPONGEBOB????
WHAT HAPPENED?
Imagine holding a high powered magnet in front of the creature covered in piercings
7:00 I agree with her on the 9-5 being soul destroying but she’s what ever music she makes theres 50,000 others who make it as well and probably better. Best not to hedge her future on that.
5:50 That looks absolutely ridiculous, how do some guys like that? I just don’t understand, as soon as the proportions look slightly wrong I’m out.
The most disgusting part of the bbl is that the fat tissue the doctor shoves in there isn't going to just reattach back to your body (despite it usually coming from the same woman who gets it, it's basically liposuction "recycling"). The fat eventually starts to rot after a couple weeks leading to a bunch of decomposed garbage under thier ass skin, having to be replaced constantly.
@@amancalledjoe Yea that’s disgusting, no idea why people do it & think it looks good.
@@amancalledjoe That's not how that works but OK lol
Here's the non-lazy way out of the paper straw.. bring a metal reusable straw wherever you go.
those are some interesting specimens of humanity. if aliens get access to the internet they would bomb the planet.
6:15 taking bets on which one of those mishapen lumps (if any) are the knee
1:52 "you see those videos of turtles with straw up its nose". 1 viral video from 10 years ago! It's not like turtles are getting straws up their nose every day.
The metal face lady has trauma, there is no other way..
That girl better stay away from magnets.
I think paper straws being awful and melty is probably another case of good ol' fashioned American Capitalismus, because here in Sweden all the fast food places replaced plastic straws with exactly the waxed paper straws you mentioned, and have always been using the waxed paper cups, and then removed the plastic lids on top of that. No effect on taste, perfectly useable - going green is viable, you just have to not be lazy/cheap about it lmao.
I remember hearing through the grape vine that plastic straws were banned immediately after a college student developed a plastic straw that would change colors, detecting rate dape drugs. 👀
