@@roberterwine7650 They did, but the magic was gone. Door To Door and Move Like This were pale imitations of this effort. Heartbeat City was their best outing since their eponymous debut.
Door to Door was great in that it stepped out into different directions - pop, mixed with some country-western. I think Ric held everything up when he pulled the plug. He was the driving force behind The Cars. When Ben died in 2000, that marked the end of the original Cars' vocal harmonies and sound. Even though they produced one more album together as a group, you just know there's something - someone - missing. It's a damn shame they didn't put out more earlier, but Ric probably saw the lower turn-out during the Door to Door tour that signaled a change in musical tastes of the time. Just a couple of years later grunge appeared and changed the whole hard-rock, pop-rock scene. Thankfully, Ben and Elliot put out really cool solo efforts, as did Ric. The Cars' sound can still be heard on those recordings which did not receive too much airplay at the time of their release.
@@sonorousbelchpipe1021 Waiting 5 years to put out a lacklustre album was a big mistake, especially in the late 1980s. The Cars were an intriguing band. Classified as new wave, the first album had as much rockabilly as anything else. Sadly, they were cursed with their debut album being their best album. It happened to a lot of bands, but their debut is arguably the best ever, with My Aim Is True being the only competition.
@johnearle1 not sure I understand. The Cars put out a new record yearly starting in 1978. It was three years from 81 to 84's Hearbeat City then another three years to 87's Door to Door, their final album. I say "final" because of Ben's absence on Move Like This. I think they really enjoyed the most success and awards on Heartbeat City due to Mutt Lange's production. Almost every album and song from that era that Mutt Lange was involved with I tend to gravitate to. Ric produced Door to Door and although I enjoy listening to that album just like any other Cars' work, it might have been too "eclectic" (to borrow one if Ric's terms!) for mainstream. Like I mentioned, they branched out into different genre music and that might have "lost" some fans since it didn't sound like before. Metallica comes to mind as well after the Cliff Burton era.
@Dwane Martin Moyer No he did not. I recall him saying once he did not like that he was the star in all the Cars' music videos and tried to emphasize they're The Cars, not the Ric Ocasek Show. Funny looking back to see Elliot playing a shredder style guitar and using the pinch harmonics and whammy bar tricks that were all the rage at the time. One of the greats.
I'm one of biggest Cars fans there is. I will never forget when I heard "My Friends Girl" for the first time. I was in my car and it came on the radio, I imediatly headed to the music store and bought the album. and over the years I have purchased every album they have ever made. including the solo works and even the Anthology. I know every song and all the lyrics, they were a very important part of my life. it's a shame that Benjamin Orr and Ric Ocasek are gone. Elliott Easton is still at it the last I knew he had a group called "The Empty Heart's" that was pretty cool, he's an extremely underated guitarist. The Cars will always be one of my all time favorite groups ever.
Another piece of my youth drifts away. I played this music on Saturday nights cruising in my 68 Camaro, which is also gone now. Rest in peace, and may your voice be heard all over the world forever. You and Ben Orr are what made The Cars the coolest sound back in the mid 80's. Easton's guitar riff is proof of that in this energetic tune.
I really liked listening to The Cars back in the day. Fine group of musicians with a unique style. The word underrated gets tossed around quite a bit in music, but seriously their lead guitarist could shred with the best of'em in my opinion.
On their reunion tour in 2011, Easton was playing right in front of me the whole time. His extended bridge during You're All I've Got Tonight will probably be embedded in my head for the rest of my life! One of the best guitar performances I've ever seen.
I'm 64, as of yesterday, and I still get a thrill listening to the incredible music of the 80's. I never thought that decade would end. Good night, Ric! Sleep well.
Elliot Easton might be the most under rated shredder of all time.....He doesn't get anywhere near the credit he deserves...Watched him at a show in De Moines IA. in 1989 where he went off on a riff that lasted over 20 minutes and was as good or better than anything Hendrix, Page, Blackwell, Stevens, Malmensteen or anybody else ever did and he did it Live...
sorry brother, yes, Easton is a great artist- but not close to Page, Hendrix, and dozens of 70's rockers. To disagree is bogus man. 70's is the next great generation.
Easton's solo's are actually better thought out than Page...and i'm a big Page fan by the way so don't go ape on me ok..lol... Page was a brilliant rhythm player , so unique and inspiring..
One of my favorite Cars songs, but more that that is the damn guitar lead! Great dynamics and melody. One of the most underrated guitarists in music, but I believe only because this was a true "band" and no one took a front seat, or a back seat. Just great music.

Back in the 80’s,Me and my then boyfriend used to cruise around in his brothers gold Camaro blasting the Cars on the radio . Great times❤️R.I.P. Ric💔
That's cool!!! 😎 Rick will be miss. 🎸 🚗 🎶 🎧
Thier entire group are a little touched with Ingeniously... 😂😂😂 ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
You can't have 80s music without The Cars! One of my favorite 80s bands!
Such great fun music. The Cars were part of my soundtrack in life. Thank you for the memories.
Exactly - they helped me through a Divorce !
A performance for all time. The group the Cars are, in my opinion, forever great performers.
I can see why they put it on the re-release of Heartbeat City, it sounds like the production of it and style.
I really liked listening to The Cars back in the day. Fine group of musicians with a unique style.
The word underrated gets tossed around quite a bit in music, but seriously their lead guitarist could shred with the best of'em in my opinion.
Absolutely. Slash says he’s his Idol.
Elliott Easton was definitely underrated. When it comes to The Cars it's easy to look at Rick or Ben but the reality is they were all good.
On their reunion tour in 2011, Easton was playing right in front of me the whole time. His extended bridge during You're All I've Got Tonight will probably be embedded in my head for the rest of my life! One of the best guitar performances I've ever seen.
Nostalgia pura !!!
The Cars made great videos!
he aqui un temon de los 80, epoca de oro del rock .
Ahhhhh, Great muzic, from a HOF band and videos that always seem to have such pretty ladies ... Nuthin better Thank you Cars😎
Best guitar solo from the Cars.
Elliot Easton is a phenomenal guitarist. One of my favorites.
He spent 1 month perfecting it :)
Bye Bye Love...my favorite
Karen Ladd +yep Easton is very a underrated guitarist, love this song, no matter how many times , it sounds fresh to me .
Touch and Go is better imo.
I'm 64, as of yesterday, and I still get a thrill listening to the incredible music of the 80's. I never thought that decade would end. Good night, Ric! Sleep well.
I am sure he is Rocking up there in Heaven!
In a way it hasn’t
I feel so lucky to have been born a late Baby Boomer in 1960 and to have had the opportunity to have grown up with some of the greatest music ever!
Fireworxs2012 I agree 100% great guitarist
Yeah very tasteful guitarist indeed..this solo when i first heard it blew me away !
sorry brother, yes, Easton is a great artist- but not close to Page, Hendrix, and dozens of 70's rockers. To disagree is bogus man. 70's is the next great generation.
Totally agree, one of my favorite guitar solos ever!
Por que eu tenho a impressão de que a banda ta ficando mais famosa agora?????
Great memories from the 80's cruising in my camaro and going to the drive inn with all your friends that we snuck inn the trunk and having a few pops lol cheers .
2019 and still loving this song
Hi 5 for our killer taste!
myownself
@Tod Wilkinson Yes I agree with you.
One of My favorite bands growing up in the 80s! Their music was so ahead of its time! Awesome guitar riffs, drums, vocals & keyboards made this group a Masterpiece to listen to! RIP Ric Ocasek! You are a Legend! 😀
I love The Cars ❤️
One of my favorite lead guitar solo's ever.
Yes!! It is a absolute a great guitar solo.
One of my all time favorite songs. Whenever I hear it, and my 6 year old son can attest to this, I drop what I’m doing and just start singing and dancing. Pure joy and is like the sun on a cloudy day. RIP and thanks for this classic masterpiece. There sure must be a big concert up in heaven with all these greats leaving us....
"PURO PINCHE CAR'S", FROM CORCORAN, CALIFORNIA!!!!! 💖💖💖💖💖💯👑
The Cars will always be great. ❤
Talk about a group who is well-put-together and whose tunes NEVER GET OLD!!!!! This group picks me up! High modern energy music. And they have evolved! Thank you CARS!!
Ric Ocasek really wrote top songs for the Cars. Benjamin Orr did a great job singing their other notable hit Drive. Long live the 80s
Never forgotten Thank you for the Memories RIP🙏 Ric🎶🎶
1:48 Elliot Easton freaking Rocks!! Damn Music was so Damn Good! We Love you Ric and miss you and music!
