The myth of the soul mate

  • The following quote from Eat, Love, Pray by Elizabeth Gilbert sums up what I believe soul mates are really about:
“People think a soul mate is your perfect fit, and that's what everyone wants. But a true soul mate is a mirror, the person who shows you everything that is holding you back, the person who brings you to your own attention so you can change your life.
A true soul mate is probably the most important person you'll ever meet, because they tear down your walls and smack you awake. But to live with a soul mate forever? Nah. Too painful. Soul mates, they come into your life just to reveal another layer of yourself to you, and then leave.
A soul mates purpose is to shake you up, tear apart your ego a little bit, show you your obstacles and addictions, break your heart open so new light can get in, make you so desperate and out of control that you have to transform your life, then introduce you to your spiritual master...”
In this video I go further down the rabbit hole and explain what soul mates are really about.

I’m coming to the conclusion that every relationship and experience we have is given to us for a learning experience to grow and work on what’s damaged broken or needs to be flourished.

Thanks for this. I used to believe in soulmates, but never felt like I have one. One thing I love about my wife is how different she is (not just from me, but different from almost everybody). I'm drawn to her by the fact the that I DON'T understand her completely. There's always something more to her that I haven't figured out yet, she's got some new surprise, some new interest, an amusing quirk, an impulsive new tv show choice, or turning down a dirt road on an spur-of-the-moment "adventure"!
I tell people all the time that I knew one thing for sure when I married her: life with her will never be boring! (I was certainly right about that!) One thing I didn't count on, though, was for her to succumb to limerence.
