I really want them to cover Hayabusa. He was my first exposure to wrestling. Hayabusa is the reason I got into wrestling to begin with, and FMW was all the better for him having been in it.
He had some cool matches in ECW late 90s
Magumi Kudo also She was such a star.
Onitas entrance at the Tokyo Dome is still the most bad ass thing I've seen
Saw the guy live in Yokohama in a bout against Akebono not super long after he was forced to retire from politics. He was bloated and out of shape, and the arena was pretty much a glorified school gym, but goddamn did we all mark out when Wild Thing started and he made his way to the ring.
That's the power of Onita.
@@horgh_japan
Yeah that match happened in 2012 when he had a tiny Career resurgence.
Seeing this live must have been fantastic
@@cyberpunkgrappling6447 The match was... well... about as good as an out of shape and bloated Onita with a lazy, unmotivated Bono could be... BUT that wasn't the point. It never is with Onita.
Funny thing was I was sitting front row (a little over 100 bucks or so at the time) right in front of some sumo dudes. While everyone was going crazy for 'Nita (myself included), the threesome just sat there with their arms crossed looking totally unimpressed.
@@horgh_japan
@Sylvain Parent
Haha that's a great Story !
Those Sumo dudes were probably guests it often happens for Sumo Hall shows
And that reminds me that the first time Akebono was seen in Pro Wrestling was in a random All Japan Card in the late 90s (as a guest viewer too). I think Hayabusa wrestled on that show actually
Legendary. I've never seen Japanese fans EVER pelt wrestlers going down the rampway with trash/litter. In my opinion, FMW did the in-ring hardcore style the RIGHT way. Alot of psychology to their matches. ECW on the other hand, Had great character work & storyline booking. If only we could have mixed the two in that aspect.
I remember the urban legend that the reason he was trying to get Invader 1 over was to get wacked by the Yakuza for what he did to Brody...one urban legend I hope is true
@Joshua Sharwood One of Onita's nicknames was "Mr. Liar".
Supposedly it was Savio Vega who got word from Victor Quiñones in Japan, that the hit was planned and told Invader not to go work the Onita "stabbing angle" match. They shot the promo in Puerto Rico, Onita even flew there, but the match never happened.
haha that's awesome I never heard that

i had a friend from college who used to work security for Onita and was friends with him back in the day. he told me Onita's secret back in the day was doing acupuncture after his matches. the guy would be bleeding then afterwards he'd stick a bunch of needles in himself. thought that was an interesting tidbit.
i recall on one of the FMW tapes i rented where Onita talked about part of the reasoning he did those crazy matches was in part to compete against the rise of video games. my japanese interpretation might've been off but i think that was the gist.
Both interesting tidbits, sir. Thank you.
Love JC. Love Dark Side. Best combo.
We need a bright side of the ring that kanyon episode made me sad for a day
"Onita actually made a lot of money doing this shit" - Jim Cornette
Not just money. It made him a freakin' cult figure in Japan and allowed him, a barely literate garbage wrestler who graduated high school well into adulthood (because of his political aspirations), to get a seat in the Japanese Diet.
I'm astonished anyone would have negative things to say about any of the guests artists

But he wets himself over the murdering drug dealing biker who tried to blow up a police station

FMW had some bad ass dudes. My favorites were Sabu, Mike Awesome, Masato Tanaka, Wing Kanemura, Hayabusa, Jensei Shinzaki, Mr. Ganusuke and his mop handle breaking glory! Kodo Fuyuki was cool too.
As an artist myself, I really appreciate jim cornette's new variation of thumbnails.
Travis is sick I think so they are bringing in newer artists
This kind of artwork is so nice to have a portrait and display on your room.. 🔥
Talking about FMW...Hayabusa needs a documentary of his own too
😭
Didn't Hayabusa get power bomb like 50 times by Onita in the explosive cage match?
Was he really well-known enough to the "Dark Side" audience for that to make sense?
Maybe make an episode about Darren Drozdov first if you want to discuss the dangers of working in the ring? He's still alive and could give some interesting insight on the topic - if he wants to talk about it. And so could D'Lo Brown.

This guest art is fucking bad-ass! I feeLike it would work just as line art, but I'm sooo glad it's colored!
This sounds great by the way. As a long term wrestling promotion it was doomed to fail because, like all those promotions, it either became (or always was) about the shock value instead of the storytelling, and eventually nothing’s shocking 🎸anymore. But as a documentary subject it seems very compelling.
Magumi Kudo vs Combat Toyota mother-in-law exploding barbed wire retirement match is phenomenal!
Was that the match when they were both on the floor holding each other sobbing postmatch photogs snapping photos
@@tobiasfarragut292 Might be. Toyoda and Kudo were tag team partners at one point. They had a falling out and battled each other. Their deathmatch served as a retirement for Toyoda and to cement Kudo's "Queen of the Deathmatch" status. Of course, Toyoda unretired and went to other promotions.

@@alexythimia23 umm maybe you misunderstood what the OP meant
Just here to comment on the artwork. This is great 👍 congrats to the artist
AEW tried, but they can't pull off anything close to what FMW did in the 90s.
They need to stop trying to that shit. What is even the point, do they really need that huge market of the 350 people that got to CZW shows? They already do enough stupid dangerous shit without the weapons.
WWE isn't really any better with this. I'd like to see a 5 year ban on ladder matches, it's been done so much that no one really cares anymore.
@@Cruising_On_Lake_Havasoma, ladder matches aren't too bad, but I wish they'd get rid of Kendo sticks.
The Problem with AEW doing it, I feel, is the fact that they have to keep things within a certain range due to being a huge mainstream company, nationally televised, traded, etc.
They can't go all out, no pun intended, the way a small promotion like CZW and GCW can, so you end up with this half assed death matches that are awkwardly stuck being caught between WWE levels of censored and a full blown deathmatch.
This annoys everyone because Jim and everyone that dislike/hate this kind of stuff are pissed off because it's happening, and those that are into deathmatch and whatnot are pissed off because for the most part it kind of sucks compared to what they are used to.
@@rashira9610 AEW can't do the things that FMW or CZW did because they're on national cable. They even brought in Nick Gage and that fell flat Wrestling is a niche audience and deathmatch stuff is even more niche; if a major wrestling company tried doing that stuff on a constant basis I don't think they'd be on TV for long.
*FMW had 100x the success that backwoods, rinky-dink Smoky Mountain Wrestling had.*

Onita never did the piranha match it was in BJW guys come on 🤦♂️
Yup. Matsunaga pioneered those matches with piranha, scorpions, and spiderweb barbed wire matches.

I would love it if every week they had a new guest artist from here on out
@@candyiscool357 ngl that would be a sick idea
@Brian stavely Is a schill boycott the show fuck that only the blue hair brigade boycott shows 😂
BJW Big Japan Wrestling did the piranha matches they also did scorpion death matches which also included cacti tied in each corner. are they having aquarium full of scorpions and they'd have to hold the guy in there for 10 seconds they did the barbed wire trampoline fishnet deathmatch where they fought on a scaffold the whole ring was covered in a big Criss-Cross net of barbed wire
People tend to think of FMW as the crazy death match promotion, but ultimately FMW kinda stuck to a core concept and more or less built around it in a fairly organic way by adding a smaller gimmick on top of the original one (barbed wire --> "electric" barbed wire --> exploding electrified barbed wire --> add a cage on top/pool around the ring). BJPW (and IWA-japan to an extent) were the ones doing the really weird stuff and the kept it up even in their later somewhat more comedic incarnations with the King Lear-themed card.
Lol cacti 🌵 for turnbuckles you’d think THAT was “the texas deathmatch”
Yeah. Big Japan took things to another level. They had Mr Danger, Jun "Fucking Crazy" Kanzai, and Honma. BJW teamed up with CZW which led to weed wacker matches.
@@juicyfruit6311 how can you forget Matsunaga the short-haired bleach blonde guy that always wore the black karate pants he was always in the piranha death match or the scorpion deathmatch always doing that crazy stuff. 😂
@@jeremybayne5895 The Stop the Matsunaga Campaign was awesome. A sort of over the hill/bitter would-be badass comes back to mess up pretty young (and more talented) guys. He had no desire to follow the rules by pulling out blades and shit during shoot style bouts because he's jealous and sees them as what he could have been had things turned out differently.
So much pathos. It humanized Matsunaga and made hm more than a failed shoot style guy.

Gives Art imitates life a whole other meaning, huh?
At first the new art was jarring but I'm getting use to it. I like the aesthetic of the old art. but this new art has a comic book style that's not bad.
I would love to see some Corny art in the vein of Shinkiro the legendary SNK and Capcom artist.
Onita is the exception to the rule, since Corny usually tears into those that participate in these type of barbaric matches
The piranhas were used in Big Japan Wrestling, but not FMW.
Bretfmw on UA-cam. I started watching his channel at the beginning of quarantine as well. Cool channel. Explains what's happening storyline wise and behind the scenes in fmw year by year
I guess,The artist is a huge anime fan!!!
Cornette’s analysis at the end is a bit incorrect. Onita is not running shows in a fruit and vegetable market but actually is running shows under the parking garage of a defunct fruit and vegetable market!
By the way, the atmosphere of the live shows in that environment trumps the atmosphere at the ECW Arena in its prime, Korakuen Hall, Tokyo Dome, Saitama Super Arena etc…
Unfortunately FMWE is doing an absolutely terrible job filming and producing those shows so the clips online look awful
Really the ultimate Death Match was Atonio Inoki Vs Masa Saito Island of Death wish there was a Darkside on that match as it's the NJPW equivalent of Thriller in Manila
Watched that Dark Side Of The Ring episode with Onita and his FMW promotion being a fan of theirs through bootleg vhs compilation tapes of them and the wild and crazy matches that have done (Have most of them on vhs ) was definately interested to watch it . Definately was interesting to hear Onita's story about how he was a top Jr. Heavyweight in All Japan and was destined to be the face of their Jr. Heavyweight division then he injured his kneees and had to retire then coming back and challenging legitimate fighters only to get turned down then him forming FMW and doing what would become the death match style of wrestling with crazy insane stipulations that look like something from the SAW movies with Barbed Wire , Fire ,Explosions , ninja weapons , Broken Glass . Basically a brawling style amped up to 100 plus bringing in talent like Mick Foley aka Cactus Jack , Terry Funk and who was ever crazy enough to do these style of matches . FMW also spawned many imitators such as W*ING and IWA Japan and BJW where those companies took what FMW did and put their own niche on it plus helping inspire companies in North America such as ECW , Iwa Mid South , CZW plus getting WWF and WCW to create hardcore divisions in their companies . It was also interesting to hear how the Yakuza (Japanese Mafia ) got involved in a few instances and how by the end FMW was in debt and folded due to Owner Shiochi Arai hanging himself caused he owed money to the Yakuza and was in debt to them . FMW created and pioneered a style of wrestling that carved out a bloody violent legacy that is still relevent today . Recently Onita reformed a version of former company called FMW-E (Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling Explosion ) . Have seen a few of the matches and if you're a death match wrestling fan worth a watch . Partial to the original FMW then again they were legendary imo .
Let's hope they don't ruin anybody's carrer with this episode.

It's good but I think the previous art fits better. The art here has Jim looking how Vince Mcmahon have been drawn by travis lately.
Is there a BretFMW for AJPW? I’ve been working my way through their stuff, and I’m at ‘83 now. I’d really appreciate something like this, if someone can point me in the right direction. I already plan to watch Joseph Montecillo’s King’s Road series when I rewatch the 90’s, so that’ll be fun.
Amazing artwork
I used to watch deathmatch but lost my taste for it. One thing about Japanese deathmatches compared to garbage like CZW is that Japanese deathmatches employ psychology.
Edit- For Jim's comment regarding FMW-E using a Produce Stand as a venue...truthfully...attendance figures for pro wrestling in Japan aren't all that high for any promotion. NJPW leads the way but even then a lot of their events have less than 1,000 fans. For Wrestle Kingdom, they get around 30,000 whereas back in the 90s they would seat over 60,000. So pro wrestling isn't as hot in Japan either and hasn't been for a long time.
Love this artist
Is that Cornette or Henry Rollins?
Hank and Corny are about the same size these days. Both have completely messed-up knees and totally shredded vocal cords. Both are great storytellers and sources for amazing road stories and insight into parallel societies/subcultures that don't really exist anymore. Both raised by single mothers. They're almost the same age, both were born in 1961. Both socially awkward nerds that are completely obsessed with certain special interests. Both have strong obsessive-compulsive tendencies. Both are former fans that for some reason were asked by their idols to work for them and become professionals with little-to-no training and almost out of the blue. Both got major culture shocks when they did and had to deal with very violent audiences that physically attacked them. Both are self-made millionaires and started DIY businesses that grew into something much bigger. Both have written books and are published photographers. There are more similarities...
I wonder what would happen if the two had a conversation on a stage in front of an audience. It could be the most interesting two hours ever - or the most awkward and boring.

I personally can't wait to see what XPW can bring to the wrestling table in 2021. From what I've heard from Rob Black's podcast, the revived XPW is gonna be about sticking it to the snowflakes. FMW? That was the promotion that did the an*l explosion death match with the male porn star doing the loser right? I think Hayabusa was in the match. I hope dark side of the ring covers that. And I hope they cover when the original leatherface tried to kill Onita with the nail strip. The other cool thing about FMW (and Japanese wrestling in general) is that they used to let the wrestlers brawl with or abuse the crowd itself.
Eiji Ezaki dropped the Hayabusa persona and became "H" during that match.
Leatherface did the nails match in IWA Japan and it was not against Onita. The an*l explosion match was where they stuck a firecracker up a guys ass. Chocoball Mukai had nothing to do with it.
