Sting was also the last Icon of wrestling, from the 90’s. Adams official run ended in 2011, as soon as it was catching steam it ended wont mention the Lita years. Then he came back in 2020. And he was a despicable heel, heels aren’t remembered like baby-faces are.
I was the number 1 ''Edgehead'' back in the day and was thrilled when he made his return at the Royal Rumble. Was disappointed when he left WWE for AEW but as a loyal follower of his I decided to check it out. It just wasn't the same and didn't encourage me to keep tuning in. Imagine the matches he'd be having now in the Triple H era.
The problem is that AEW have all of these great talent but they're not sure what to do with them. You can only go so far with just having great matches. Without any build or storylines, it's just an indie show on national TV. Another thing too, they lack advertisement. Only hardcore wrestling fans know about AEW and other wrestling companies. Not a lot of casual wrestling fans know about AEW. If you go ask people in the street and ask them if they watch wrestling, most people would think of WWE. There are people who may not know that Edge, or now Adam Copeland, is in AEW. People may not know that Chris Jericho is AEW, or Big Show, Sting, or any other well-known former WWE/WCW wrestler. There are a lot of Edge fans. Some of those fans may have trickled into AEW but saw how the company presented themselves.
There are plenty of casual fans that know about AEW because of Instagram, social media, and wwe stans always bringing up 'how lame aew is' in comment sections of posts.
I agree completely. The name/character is often just as important as the wrestler him/herself. People are not interested in Adam Copeland because we spent over 20 years (30 including Edge's 10 year retirement) investing into the Edge character. Changing names is basically changing characters. To make matters worse Edge not only changed his names/character, he also changed wrestling promotions and fans. Not to mention he's 50 years old. When undertaker changed his gimmick in 2000 from the Deadman to the biker he was smart enough to keep his Undertaker name as well as keeping the same SAGA. If Undertaker returned in 2000 as Mean Mark with a completely new gimmick he wouldn't of had the successful career he had post 2000. He wouldn't be Kane's "brother" anymore, the streak storylines never would of happened, etc.
Right, just like A-train when change gimmick to lord tensai at first fan were excited when tensai gimmick debut but after he unmask and fan knew who really is the hype went down
@deanrahim3005 exactly, A train was Goated tensai could've been goated if they didn't use A train and just used another big guy who was actually Japanese
This video speaks facts though, unfortunately i doubt he owns the name edge, could be worst though (damon striker) 😅but i enjoyed his matches their and thats just me i've since stopped watching and probably wont tune in again after this whole britt and mjf drama now.
Unfortunately Adam Copeland could only take the theme song with him and not the name "edge" and he was promised the moon and the stars and AEW has not delivered at all. Sting was presented right and years ago he trademarked the name so he could keep it for the rest of his career. But towards the end of his career, Sting was not booked right at all. They put that 65 year old man in a ladder match and he made the mistake of listening to someone younger and damn near broke his neck. Adam did the same thing with his leg.
The problem with signing former wwe wrestlers is they're good for one thing... the debut pop that's about it most the time.. then they just slowly start to lose popularity.
You're right on the money I think him being done as "Edge" was also one of the bigger stepbacks to his career, Edge just has a cool ring to it, Adam just humanizes him and ruins the character image. Just like Sting, he should've kept the name.
The difference between AEW Sting and AEW Adam Copeland, is that AEW treated Sting as the nostalgia act he is. Darby did the bulk of the day to day stuff, and Sting made saves and do a spot here or there (both high risk spots and things like no selling the double superkick) AEW treated Adam Copeland like a full time wrestler with programs and feuds and single title matches, and really no help whatsoever. Copeland isn't a full time wrestler anymore. He's well past his prime and coming off a career threatening neck injury. WWE had the right idea when they put him with Judgement Day, which would have allowed Balor, Priest and Ripley to do the dirty work and let Edge be proverbial emperor on the throne behind them. I suspect Copeland bulked at the idea because he is in denial about where he is a wrestler, hence his AEW run being what it is.
AEW needs to get serious. Send the jokers packing. Thank them for building the brand, but it's big time now. Tone down the foolishness and get some actual control.
Aew needs to start doubling down on the talent they have instead of constantly looking to unveil the next big name signing,Yes they have name value but when you keep bringing in another after another it dilutes the impact, instead they need to work with and build a platform for who they have and create solid angles to work the matches around, since the beginning Aew had someone debut, used them for a bit and then sidelined them as the next person came and repeated the process!
I feel like Copeland and Ospreay were forced to say the things they said. Why else? It's clear that they were forced to go out and say it, and according to the Bucks, Tony insisted on airing the All In footage. The clear problem in AEW is the not the talent saying this, it's the Elite and Tony Khan!
and this is why AEW will never reach the success of WWE. They have the talent, and they do have amazing matches...but that only gets you so far. they have no real direction, convincing storylines, booking is all over the place, etc. they just throw together matches for the sake of saying "oh so and so wrestled so and so"...okay and? they have the potential to really rival wwe but again they don't have a clear set goal
