@@Gruntvcthats what im thinking. Ps vita probably did everything better than psp but lacked proper games that people would actualy play. Maybe rockstar could have released gta san andreas stories on ps vita or ubisoft could release a assassins creed game or a tom clancy game, activision could develop an actualy proper cod game since cod bo declassified had only 5 months to be developed and so on. But time could also be another key reason why ps vita was a flop because the handheld consoles were decreasing in sales and nowadays everybody can make a game for mobile phones and you can always port games so even if a game released exclusivly for a handheld console people can just port it and play it on their pc wich reminds me of piracy because its pretty easy to pirate games on handheld console

I actually carry around a PSP with me a lot these days. It's easier to fit in a pocket than a Vita, and it's surprisingly ergonomic despite the smaller size. Additionally, the fairly simple file structure makes the process of tinkering and modding largely hassle-free. It's still an awesome handheld to use if you can get one for cheap. I got mine from a family member for the very low price of $0.

Master Edition PSX Doom from the doomworld forums
Basically a team reverse engineered and decompiled the PS1 version of Doom, made a bunch of improvements and bugfixes to the engine, made PS1 versions of all the levels that were missing from the PS1 versions of Doom and Final Doom (as well as Romero's Sigil, the No Rest for the Living XBox Live exclusive Doom 2 episode and some others) and swapped those in for the original levels, added in new monsters such as the Archville which was missing from PS1 Doom and 'nightmare' versions of some standard enemies, and then recompiled the whole thing back into a PS1 iso. And on top of that they even went ahead and converted into into a PSP eboot too, available on the forum thread.
Anyway once I set up the controls the way I liked (face buttons to move/strafe, analog to turn, shoulders to fire/use, dpad to switch weapons), it's the best FPS experience I've had so far on the PSP. Can't recommend it enough

I forget if it was the first or second game (probably works in both), but I was able to climb out of the trophy room by running and constantly jumping in the corner. There's nothing up there though, just a vast, empty plain of repeating texture.

That control config used by the PSP was also how the dreamcast did FPS games and 3rd person shooters like MDK2. It worked a lot better, Dreamcast had a 1 stick, but the internals were primo Hall-Effect so it was super precise and immune to drift. Anyhoo I remember some of these games on the PSP; flat analogue sticks are fine if never really precise when they are big and cushy enough like the 3DS, but the small stiff hard psp one wasnt fun for the thumb over time. Always a good time seeing how cool the PSP is. I remember playing and at least trying almost all First Person Shooters on the handheld.
One thing developers screwed up with the control layouts (since SONY for some odd reason decided to use only one analog stick) with most of these games, specially when proper layouts from the 32-bit era had the perfect scheme for these games.
Make the analog turning left/right and moving up/down, L & R strafing and that alone would free all face buttons and the Dpad could be used as extra inputs. This is the perfect way to playing DOOM on the PS1, WHY they chose to mimic dual analog using the face buttons on the PSP is puzzling, they limit what can be done with an already known control layout from an era prior. These games end up being almost unplayable due to these decisions.
Fortunately, we can customize controls using PPSSPP and even cheats for true dual analog, depending on the game.

Carnivores and Ice Age, if I understand correctly - are PSP ports of the 1998 and 2001 games of the same name respectively. Both were initially developed by Ukrainian studio Action Forms (who also made Chasm: The Rift in 1997, Vivisector: Beast Within in 2005 and Cryostasis in 2008 - all are kinda unique PC games with different ideas like varied weapons and limb damage in Chasm, brutal disection of enemies in Vivisector - something similar I didn't see until Doom Eternal and 2023 remake of Dead Space and Cryostasis had idea of going inside memories of dead crew members and fixing their past as well as heat mechanic where player's health was equal to the amount of heat they have) Apparently they also worked on these ports for Android and iOS as well as for PSP version.

A lot of good titles but I think people forget Medal of Honor on PS1. Even the lack of cover based systems or just the leaning of MOH or older COD games.
Triggers for PS1/PSP wasn't uncommon. I got used to Spyro on triggers. Used left analogue with the Platinum version I assume but no right stick control. The left only for full analogue control or 8 way mimicking it varies per games use of the stick.
Dreamcast shooters like Quake, 1 stick like come on. Was N64/PS1/Dreamcast that foreign to people it is nowadays but not back then and I haven't even played some other than Turok 2 N64 and it was foreign but got the hang of it, PS1 Rainbow Six was foreign, I got the hang of it, but PSP yeah nowadays two is normal but I got more the hang of those then I did N64/PS1 took a fair bit longer. Also no manual versus PSP I do mostly have the manual.
The Killzone/Resistance/Syphon filter games are third person yes.
Tom Clancy other PSP games do have first person views like Battlefront. Might need to do better research on some titles. I know as I own Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter PSP. Can't say for the others and well yes Rainbow Six on PSP makes sense as PS1 entries were or maybe the series always was FPS intended then third person of the other Tom Clancy series.
I have Rainbow Six Vegas 1 console version (not 2 yet) and Advanced Warfighter 1&2 console version after the PSP version. They seem fine to me. Different or harder on PSP but still fine. With PSP expectations then console to handheld people have which isn't fair.
Also Resistance Infection mode with Resistance 2 is cool. It's not
Coded Arms aim is very particular it's awkward but fun. Medal of Honr has its moments, Contagion is linear and fair. I know bits about the Ghost in the Shell game but not seen the anime.
Ywah the code minigame of Contagion is annoying.
Assault for PS3 would have been awesome. I mean I get the shotoers out at the yimr or coming but I still would have played it. I am every shooter on PS3/360 that came out and not banned in my area. Got probably a 1/4 of the genres titles or the ones I probably care about too as well. Even here with this video some games I don't care about seem fine but still not my thing.
Nova knew of but the other Minis are impressive for what fhey are.
COD had faie moments and compared to Finest Hour or Big Red One. Not played 2 or 3 probably more representatively similar.
While PSP puzzle games I loved and discovered. They aren't all very Gizmondo or Tapwave Zodiac like limited of games for it or puzzles suit the d-pad more.
DS batteries worked better than PSP more I find. Let alone the music/video encoding eh.
But people go oh this handheld layout is limited. It suited the time. If handhelds are like older consoles it fit PS1/2 well.
Renegade Squadron lock on was more forced.
Challenges as a hunt style mode/capture the flag modes on BF2 are fair besides the less maps or cut layouts. Galactic conquest is good besides it's cut corners.
Ah Dark Void we will never get a 2nd sigh. I liked it.
Yeah knew about King Kong the official movie of the game. Never played it. Cutscenes or shortening is always the case but not a bad thing for the limits of the hardware.
MOH Heroes bot mode is good. Singleplayer is fair. The missions are ok, the camera is a bit awkward. Maps are fair size. 2 is more linear. 1 is more limited of personality and AI but it does fit MOH more. It was one of the earliest titles I started with before the console entries.
Yeah Brothers in Arms more tactics and realistic then arcade cliff notes. Yeah Hell's Highway I have played so yet to play PSP or the older entries.
Army of Two even was an ok 40th day port. Or Burnout compilations of games too. Many PSP games seem to do that out of laziness of best ofs or ports so why bother western devs.
To me handhelds were good for Japanese games and western devs on a lower budget that can't make a console game. I wanted to think they were best ofs PS1/2 but they aren't always.
Japanese AA always thrive on them for sure. Same with AA western or newcomer devs. Or handheld only stuck Dev's I guess in some cases.
Even though on console it was like that besides the camera and control of say Resistance/Syphon filter on the PSP having their third person system work well.
It's like God of War, Pitfall Lost Expedition, Knack. All use the right stick for dodging or the hand for tools. Some use it for combat. Do people forget because right stick eas new back then but camera 99% of the time besides well Knack or other games.
Even with Japanese games very visual novel or other menu like still today they are still very face button menu focused still Square and Triangle menu uses besides O and X then Options or Touchpad.
People just forget or don't remember/know any better. Or haven't played some games or gone back far enough.
Sure it's completely different but as someone that has never held a 6 button controller or anything older yeah those do seem weird as much as the 1st-3rd gen controllers with the few buttons or the dials but they make sense for the time.
Intellvision Lives doesn't communicate well on its limited buttons and layout. But Atari games do bind well and it's down to context from the game then the limited controls.
Besides well Jaguar in Atari 50 with few buttons not used due to the 3/6, d-pad and 9 keypad buttons and overlays.

I think it only defaulted to Third Person on consoles and PSP, the PC version defaulted to First Person to ease the PC players who play FPS games in that platform, the only exception to this rule (other than changing it to TPS manually) is when you play as hero and villain characters like Luke Skywalker or Dath Vader

Some of these ports are pretty impressive, i've played the Brothers in Arms and Battlefront Ports on an actual PSP, and despite some preformance issues (BIA suffers from it the most, a few sections got pretty bad.), they're pretty solid. Really the most interesting fact about the PSP Battlefront games is that it has one of the last remaining bits of Battlefront 3, which was reworked into Elite Squadron as far as i know. The PSP from what i remember is damn hardy too, i must've dropped mine a dozen or more times, and it barely left a scratch, unfortunately mine is now very dead thanks to a washing machine. Was also a really good music player when i figured out how to put music files on it.

There was also Cabela's Dangerous Hunts: Ultimate Challenge which is a port of Dangerous Hunts 2 but with a lot of alterations and new hunting content. The cover art is just a cropped version of the cover art for the first Dangerous Hunts even though this is the second one and both are two completely different experiences (if you've never played Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2 before, you're in for a surprise when you fight the final boss).

@@FrameRater I don't know how I missed that when looking at the chapters lol! I'm still disappointed that you didn't talk about the final boss, though. Also, you could never change your walk speed on the console version, let alone any other Cabela's game so that impressed me! Some of those minigames in the Quick Action mode are like other minigames in Cabela's games around that time, like Outdoor Adventures (which was released the same year as Dangerous Hunts 2), and Deer Hunter 2005 Season. I've played these games so much as a kid (I was a huge fan of hunting games as a kid and I still am, despite me not being interested in hunting in real life), that I'm able to notice small details like the bear's death animation was an actual animation in this port as opposed to the console where it just falls with slight ragdoll physics. I never owned this game nor a PSP as a kid even though I wanted one. Ever since I first found this game when I walked past it on a game shelf at a Walmart as a kid, I tried looking up videos of gameplay on UA-cam which at the time was basically impossible. Years later when I found out that it's a port of Dangerous Hunts 2 despite the cover art, I became even more curious, and then got more curious when I noticed the added content and other details. I just looked and now there are gameplay videos of that game everywhere which makes me very happy.

this is a first person mech sim first and foremost but one of my favourite shooters on the psp is Mobile Suit Gudam Bonds of the Battlefield, a port of an arcade game of the same name, sadly only ever got released in japan but think of it as a more arcady approach to mechwarrior based on the gundam IP, uses a metroid prime esc tank control scheme but I only find it works far batter in the psp’s favour than using the face buttons to aim. It’s singleplayer modes only stretch se far as mini challenge missions and the standard arcade mode but it is a shitload of fun

MoH Heroes controls and looks really well... a shame it's a Battlefield style game instead of being more linear like the OG MoH games. COD turned me off instantly by the control scheme - I prefer walking with the face buttons and aiming with the analog nub which is impossible in that one, sadly. Brothers in Arms simply refuses to boot up on my system for some reason.
