Me financed a ninja 650 just had a helmet and riding gloves I was 29 so I borrowed a friends bike I had rode dirt bikes so had the clutch stuff mainly down miraculously passed the driving test then straight to the show room
I pulled a yam lol started on a 04 cbr600f4i bought a cheap helmet from amazon (which almost fell off when I hit the freeway lol). Then bought a proper helmet from cycle gear.
Ive been riding 2 years (going into year 3). Bought a used 2012 Suzuki GSX-650F with low km, i used my helmet from auto racing (RaceQuip Pro15, super heavy and loud but snell rated) and i bought the cheapest jacket and gloves i could from my local store. Ill be looking to upgrade gear this year for sure. haha
I've been riding for almost one year with around 2400 miles under the saddle, and I still don't have riding pants. I also bought my first bike brand new instead of used. When I took my MSF course last year March, I had normal jeans, regular jacket, my old Army gloves, and a new Shoei helmet.

Bought a helmet and a pair of mechanic gloves for the MSF course. Passed the course first try, went and bought an over priced sportster 883. 2 weeks later I was bored with it already. And after about 3500 miles and 2 months on that bike I traded it in for a brand new 2018 HD Heritage Classic. 20,512 miles and 1yr and 8 months later got hit by someone not paying attention. The bike was totalled and I bought an Indian chieftain. Been riding just about 3 years now with nearly 40k miles behind me. Best therapy I've ever had for combat ptsd.
Hey Yammie! I just recently taken the MSF course and it was very informative. It was a two-day course which involved 2 1/2 hours of classroom time and 8-hour range. I will say I was really nervous seeing how I never rode a motorcycle and had a couple of fears with it. First day as I began to ride the motorcycle I would release the clutch too early and the bike would stall mid course. I would apologize to the instructors and they would be cool with it. They would always tell me about things to work on every time I went around the track; sometimes stuff I would repeatedly do lol. But all in all they were real cool and made it a fun experience. As the first day comes to an end I start to think about all the opportunities I had that day and what I can work on. All that night I couldn't sleep lol. The next day we finished up the remaining exercises before the the final test. I was nervous and on top of that it was about to rain which I was definitely nervous about. It was 10 of us lined up ready to take the test and I was the last one to take. So as I watched everyone take their exam I was picturing myself in their shoes and what I would do in their situation. It was four parts I breezed through the four exam especially the last one which I am very proud of because as I was taking it it started to rain. So I am very happy with myself😊. To anyone who is thinking about taking the class or is already in the process learn as much as possible because it is very helpful. Thank you Yammie again for the vid. You touched basis on all the stuff I was worried about when I first ride. I am getting my bike towards the end of the month which I paid cash. @@jairchavira8212 it is a motorcycle course where you taught with a certified instructor about how to properly ride a motorcycle. They will also test you at the end of the course on what you learned and once you pass you can go to the bmv or whoever you go for your motor license to get your motorcycle endorsement.

91% Road test, 100% written, 7/16/21! Got my endorsement in 2 days! MSF was great, it made learning to ride almost easy. Slow speed maneuvers are no joke. Jamming around little corners, emergency swerves, and stops. Getting friendly with a hand clutch, building confidence!!!! Do IT!!!! Today I bought a new old Royal Enfield Bullet C5. Rode in wet and dry conditions, on a fuel injected replica of a ww2 motorcycle. Barely any doubt in myself at all. 30 miles to the dealership, I wanted the service contract, No I didn’t private buy a problem someone was getting rid of. As far as this list goes, I warmed up on a Honda Ruckus. Bought more than adequate protection for the busy summer roads here. I am looking at new helmets and armor. My Lugz might need swapping out, shifting isn’t comfortable yet. Great video…. Thanks for the content
I just bought my first bike 3 weeks ago. I choose a 2019 Duke 390, I am a 5”7 chick and the height was originally an issue BUT I got a 1.5”-2” height insert that goes in your shoes. With practice and the inserts mounting the bike has become so much easier and I don’t stress it anymore. I came to UA-cam and hit up my favorite creators like Yammie, Fortnine, Moto Jitsu, Etc for advise and ideas on bikes, Gear, tech, mods, all that. Thanks Yam
Careful listening to Yammie for advice. He’s often wrong with his recommendations and at worse his opinion is heavily biased towards UA-cam ‘memes’ and some is outright dangerous. Stick with people in the industry and their videos for advice and leave the silly opinion pieces to the king of top 5 list videos for entertainment.
As a new rider, I appreciate these videos. Expecally as a female rider, I've just bought my first bike a 2020 Dongfang 250cc (Off-brand Honda). She was used on facebook market. I need to work on turning big time, dropped her today and I was so scared, but everything was fine, and I knew all riders do it. Broke a mirror and my clutch already ordered new parts for her. Still stalling it here and there, but from knowing nothing to getting it to 3rd gear, I'm proud. I have all but riding pants but I haven't came across one's I like. Hoping I can ride her to work and everything becomes second nature. Shocked to say I was scared of sportbikes, motorcycles, etc. I faced it and I told myself, maybe this isn't for me, Yet here I am! Can't wait to continue my jonrney.
Patho -the only info i can give you would be my experience with the Bell helmets. I have the qualifier and Race star. The Race Star is the only one i use now. Both of them fit snug for the first 400 miles. Roughly 4 rides. After that it fit perfectly. I would recommend getting a cloth measurer and measure your head and go by the manufacturer size chart on what ever brand you choose. Also, know the shape of your head vs the shape of the helmet. That will greatly improve the fitment. Oval vs intermediate oval

8:27 This is extremely important but equally overlooked advice! I went for a ride in my neighborhood and decided to skip all the gear except for my helmet, because I simply will not ride without a helmet, period. The whole ride went fine, even when it was inappropriately spirited, up until I saw a girl and wanted to show off. I did my tire warming well but unfortunately took a turn with too tight of an apex at FIFTEEN whole mph, lol, and my front tire dipped into the gutter sending my bike, and myself face first into the asphalt. The face shield and chin of the helmet were shredded but because of them I only broke my collar bone and walked home. Helmets are very important! Boots are also very important; At a different time and with a different bike I was out for a ride and got too caught up in how tightly I could take a roundabout. At this point I had about three and a half years of riding experience but even still, when I felt the peg scrape and the bike starting to lay down I panicked and put my left foot down to try to stand it back up. At the time I was only wearing some cheap, non supportive sneakers and my foot caught traction and stopped immediately while the bike kept going. I crawled to the side of the road and after a while somebody stopped to offer help and I asked them to help me up but once I was standing upright it felt like my foot was just dangling loosely from the rest of my leg and I had to lay right back down because of the pain; The police also impounded my bike because I didn't have anybody to pick it up for me... I went to the hospital and ended up needing to have my ankle set and later on to have almost $3,000 worth of surgery so that it could heal properly because according to the surgeon "It looked a lot worse once we got in there than the x-rays showed." Even after that it still bothers me a lot even now, two years later. I've broken a few bones before including my knee and even though it really sucked at the time, I managed to heal well enough to start running and jumping and overall performing about the same as before. Breaking my ankle this way has actually changed my life... When I am able to "run" it's more of a limping jog and my ankle hurts like hell most of the time when I'm just sitting around not even doing anything. I really do think that this would have at least not been so bad if I was wearing some type of boots or other ankle support.
Ight that does it, I'm getting boots. I'm around all these harley guys too much whose only gear is sunglasses. I felt like I was doing fine with a full helmet, jacket and gloves. But I'm going all in, it can't hurt lol
Thanks for your input. I have this bad habit of jumping on the bike for a test ride with out ALL of my gear also. (made a fool of myself showing of for random women on occasion too) Once you start wearing light weight boots on your bike, no other shoe will do. I like the zip up side combat style boots. Amazon has them. Light weight and inexpensive. ($60ish) I got a summer and winter pair. Good luck with the ankle. Takes time.

To be honest you can get away with minimal gear on slower non performance oriented bikes. It really all boils down to not doing retarded shit like speeding or riding aggressively.
Bought my first bike at the age of 53. put 1000 miles within 6 months. fast forward 5 months later (today) Put the bike back on the road after a long winter. Still love it. Not going to get another one. One thing I like about long flat seat is I can slide forward or back to change my position ever so slightly. Makes for a nice option on longer rides. 1974 CB750 Four
Got my first ever motorcycle on a Friday night. Never rode a motorcycle in my life. Practiced it for about an hour that night and took it on a main road really early Saturday morning. Ended up riding it to work. A little too easy.

I think the new vs used purchase is an interesting convo to jump into. I personally went brand new with financing for my first bike, but went something around the 300CC mark to keep that cost down. I knew this wouldnt be my forever bike, but more than enough to get me started. The big reason I went new instead of used was because I needed the bike for my daily commute, and not knowing anything about bikes in general didn't want to run the risk of being sold a used lemon. I chose to trust that even if I had a brand new lemon, I'd be covered by warranties and many insurers are great with brand new vehicle policies. I also felt I could trust a new bike to be more reliable for my daily commute than the potential for the used bike to fall apart on me on Thursday... and noone wants to explain to Karen why they can't make it into work... It's maybe ok for those of us with a buddy who can check out the bike for us, or those of us who are just riding for hobby, but well worth considering if the bike is going to be your daily driver.
My first ride was a CBR1000RR five years ago, and I'm glad I'm still in one piece! Dropped it a few times, luckily no accidents and still riding. If I could go back I'll start with a 600 instead.
Amazing how I survived in the 60s Leather jacket, Levis, DM boots and no skid lid. I think not falling off and treating other road users as if their out to get you did help a bit. Most bikers I meet nowadays seem to use I've fallen off as a badge
What you actually get when you buy used and avoid the depreciation curve is a jump start on buying your second.... then third... etc. You'll never save, you will just gain variety quicker! lol
I had never driven a motorcycle when I took the motorcycle course. I was the oldest (63), and I dropped my bike twice, but still passed the course...by just one point! It was one of the scariest and happiest moments of my life! Having alot of fun now!
I took the 3 day NH State course to get my license as I hadn't ridden anything since I was a teenager. That was 16yrs ago. My first bike was a 79' KZ 1000ST I paid $400 for & put another $400 into to get it on the road. It was effectively an MSF Course. One of the Instructors almost shit himself when I told him what my bike was. He literally said "You do know that's the fastest factory bike of it's year, right?!" Still alive, never wrecked, still have that bike.
The biggest help is understanding how a clutch works. Knowing how to drive a manual transmission car really helped me learn on a motorcycle. My first bike was a new $16k Harley with a 96ci engine. I dropped it once. Right hand turns from a stop are the trouble area. I bought it without knowing how to ride. They delivered it to my house. I practiced getting the feel of how the clutch engaged, then rode it around the neighborhood until I felt confident enough to take it on the faster roads.
Talking about gear... I got myself full Alpinestars and a decent full helm and 2 months into driving my motorcycle a car literally drove in front of me when I was 2m away from it going 60 km/h +-... Walked away with a broken finger but bikey was a total loss tho so don't cut corners on gear, trust me the protection was broken in a lot of places... Imagine if they were not there. (The car was in fault but I learned so fast to drive like I'm invisible)
Proud of myself! I passed my motorcycle test for my license on the first try! Examiner said I was an exceptional beginner! The reason is I read up on my bike for two years before I bought it. A Yamaha FJ600!

I took the MSF course in November last year, before I bought the helmet, and that was a mistake-helmets are very personal. After the course, I got the helmet and gloves. Two weeks later, around Thanksgiving, I acquired a 2006 Kawasaki EX500, mechanically sound but with some cosmetic damage to the upper fairing and a few scratches, for $1,200. Then came riding pants, a jacket, padding and the boots. I've probably spent as much on gear as on the bike. I'm 3,200 miles into the experience and enjoying every minute. The bike is as fast as I need it to be, easily keeping up with interstate traffic, and insurance is only $20 a month.
Hey Yammie, I'm soaking up a lot of good content on your videos. 50 year old noob here getting into a '72 Yahama R5c, 350 two-stroke. It's my dad's bike that I rode all over on when I was a kid. You've got a great presentation format and wit on these videos. Right on for using "ensure" vs. "insure" in the tile and Chopin's Prelude No. 4 in the background is a nice touch too. Keep e'm coming.
I just took the temp test on the 3rd, because I was off of work, and I signed up for the MSF class this past Monday. They had one opening for the one this week. I took the class part on Wednesday evening, and just did the first day of riding today. I had ridden bikes, about 25ish years ago, and also had tried my dad's old Honda Trail 70 mini bike way back in the day, but I didn't even know the kill switch from the starter switch before today. I think that driving an old Miata for the last 7ish years has helped me a lot, because I already knew about using the clutch and changing gears, and also being careful with things like taking turns without oversteering and stuff like that. It's pretty easy to break traction in my Miata, especially if the ground is wet. I had a lot of fun today. I used a Yamaha 200 cc single cylinder, that kinda looked like a dirt bike. It was really cool to actually get to ride a motorcycle for the first time in my life.
Failed my MSF the first time, re-tested 2 months later and passed with 86%. Bought my first bike new, 2023 Vulcan S (I know, your faaaavorite). Dropped it once (gently) during the test ride. Stuck with it, now I love it. Super nimble and forgiving, and my insurance is like $20/month. Also, former Tucson resident and I recognize the road to Mt. Lemmon in the video. Beautiful route.
I had about 600 miles under my belt when I took my msf course. 2 out of 6 of us stayed and completed the course. Just me and a older gent whos been riding 40 years, and I got the same score as him and we both passed

Bought full faced helmet, jacket and gloves. Took MSF course and aced that. Then a bunch of unexcepted bills hit and now no bike or vehicle at all. Ah what a year..
I’ll throw in a couple more suggestions… choose a bike with ABS (many older models don’t have it.) It hides a multitude of braking sins that may be committed by a newbie. Choose a bike with a gear indicator… a newbie has enough to think about without having to remember which gear they’re in. Learning the basics in a compound.. for sure. I don’t know about the States but here in the U.K. it’s actually a compulsory part of the test (“Mod 1”) to complete a series of manoeuvres in an enclosed compound, before taking the road test (“Mod 2”,) if you want to ride anything over 125cc. Seat height.. for me this is proportionate to the weight of the bike. At 5’8” my Kawasaki Z1000SX seat is on the high side (balls of the feet at the lights) but at 500-odd lbs that feels OK. My Suzuki M1800R (M109R) has a LOW seat, I can “flat foot”:it at the lights and at just shy of 800lbs I wouldn’t want it any other way. I should add a disclaimer to the next tip, because it’s counter intuitive, but I was advised not to under-horse myself too much with my first bike otherwise I’d be trading it in within weeks - once you’re on the road it’s amazing how fast you progress by yourself, just putting the miles on the clock, compared with how you did under instruction. As long as you’re capable of self restraint, even the most powerful bike is only as intimidating as your right wrist allows it to be. But if you’re a hot head (or anything other than a well balanced, sensible, responsible individual with reasonable self control), please ignore the last bit.
Passed my MSF in a Shoei I bought, some work boots, cheap-o gloves, and long sleeve shirts almost 3 years ago now. After I passed, got riding jeans, boots and jacket, stuck to the crappy gloves, which eventually got replaced, and still have the helmet. It's a fairly decent helmet. Bought my bike new, 2017 Yamaha FZ-07, and have dropped it three times, all just at a standstill, only damage was to the brake lever, which I still have because it's not bad enough to even worry about replacing. Just slightly bent at the end. Honestly, there's no reason not to buy a bike new if you can afford it reasonably. Used has the perk of being cheap and insurance being inexpensive compared to new, but you never really know what you're gonna get in terms of quality until you've had it a while and come to understand its quirks. New has the benefit of learning the quirks before they become real problems, so you're ready to deal with them when they come up. My insurance is actually really inexpensive. Less than what my car insurance is for roughly the same coverage. Having a spotless driving record and being over 25 probably helps there.
I took a riding course when I was 16 and shortly after that we moved to Florida and never got another bike. I am now 46 and some of my coworkers ride and I am thinking about getting back into riding.
I took an MSF class in April of last year and it was my first time ever being on a motorcycle. I picked up on it pretty quickly though and passed the test fairly comfortably. That said, I've learned and developed A LOT in the last year of actually being out riding. I have over 1400 miles in so far in 2022! I bought a 2002 Harley Road King Classic as I wanted a touring/cruiser bike and I love it, aside from it weighing close to 900 lbs. Heavy SOB. I've been riding anywhere from 20 degrees F to 100F so far.
You’re very lucky. I quit just before taking the test. I felt extremely rushed going through the course. I was very frustrated and panicky. I now have a 12 dyna switchback in which I ride 1st gear in my circle of a neighborhood. Had it up to 23 mph and 2nd gear! Yup I’m on fire! 😀🤣😂

Grew up with a dad that rides and goes on tours where he camps along the way. He signed me up for a course a couple months ago. When I got my bike I told the salesman I wanted to get into touring too and liked a more upright position. I ended up with a BMW F900R that I’m financing. (I went in with the idea that I would keep the bike for a few years without outpacing it.) My dads been giving me advice and a book on proficient motorcycling. Went on an hour long ride recently and he followed and coached me over an intercom system. I have much less money now but i have a bike so it’s okay.
Talk to your insurance company about the Honda VFR being a "touring" bike instead of a sport bike. I did. Geico granted me the "touring" status and it saved me $1,200 per year. You can also limit the number of miles you put on your bike per year. Now this won't help if you plan on daily commuting, but if you are a weekend rider, it can save you $$$.
I’m at my 5th bike (lucky me!). Did not follow these rules right away with my first bike and I rode 15k miles on my first year (no car back then 😢). Been riding for 19 years now and I would recommend the exact same about equip yourself well no matter the type of bike you own. I had the chance to road test more than 100 bikes and believe me, when you’re riding, sudden huge smile appears on your baby face and you don’t really care what your ride looks like 😉. My advice is get the right equipment, buy a cheap bike as your first (I dropped my first bike a few times as well 😮) and feel free! Keep up your good vidz yammie ❤
Learned in the late ‘80’s on a borrowed Honda CX 500 with a Windjammer fairing complete with K-mart radio. Went to the DMV to pick up a motorcycle riders manual and they were out. Lady behind the desk suggested I just try the written test, so I did and passed it and got a student endorsement with no book and about two hours of riding experience. Three months later my uncle wanted his bike back so I went down on motorcycle test day, took the cone killing skills test, and walked out with my M endorsement. Fifteen years later (2005) I bought my first bike, a used 2003 BMW K1200RS and within three months rode it four states away to Sturgis for the rally. A few years later I took the MSF course at the HD dealer with a buddy who was buying his first bike. Still own the K12RS and am currently riding it naked (the bike, not me) since I’m changing all the fluids and filters.
Got my Harley Davidson Rider Academy Completed on 9/27, picked up my pre-owned 2016 HD SG on 9/28, and got my M1 on 10/2. Your video are very informative, especially for us noobs.

Glad to have found this channel. Looking forward to taking my first MSF course at the end of the month, as a birthday present to me. Have been researching everything I can, running insurance quotes, went to the dealer (sat on an Indian Scout Bobber that tickled my fancy…was truly a test of will to not just go ahead and buy the thing even though I’d be putting half down since the plan was to buy a Rebel 500 with cash outright), and honestly…this month might just feel like an eternity, but super excited to get out on the road and enjoy my time with all these great Yammie tips in mind.
The MSF course is a must in my opinion. I learned how to ride on an R1 but its been 10 years since i was on it. Loved the course. I will probably start taking other advanced courses soon. Just got a brand new R6!!! 😁
I started with a 150cc scooter. After I got my current motorcycle, a Honda Shadow Aero, I got my motorcycle learners permit for some practice with a heavy bike and getting used to the clutch and how it rides before taking the endorsement test. The guy who administered the test told me that he was glad to see that I had some experience and that I spent the summer getting to know my bike, because he sees most new riders just get a bike then immediately try and take the test only to fail because they dont know their bike. Motorcycle safety course was a thought for me at first, but it was way too expensive in my state (even taking and failing the test 10 times would be cheaper) and I heard from people who actually took it, that you have to use the bikes they provide and they are underpowered for someone as heavy as I am. Basically they were 200 cc bikes. I got to heavy for my scooter so those bikes wouldn't work. Mine is also a cruiser and they used something closer to dirt bikes. Totally different riding posture. I have no interest in a motorcycle that I have to lean forward on and cant sit up straight lol.
I failed the MSF course on the first test but passed aces on the re-take. It helps if the bike you get/have to use actually has functioning brakes, a motor that isnt halfway falling out of the bike preventing your foot from fitting on the shifter and of course a throttle that doesn’t dead spin an 3/4 of a rotation before the bike actually responds. Ya just take it in stride, ask for a different bike on the re-take and then pass everything then. Its also waaay less stressful the 2nd time around. The hard brake test though....with worn out drum brakes....lol what a joke that was. I never stood a chance : /
i started watching this channel because i had bought an old enduro before getting my license (I totalled it after 2 months). now I'm watching again as i wait for a response from the seller of my (hopefully) next bike
just be sure to take his advice about bringing your own helmet because the helmets provided are kinda gross. Especially if your'e in the second MSF class of the day you will be wearing a helmet with fresh soaking sweat from the previous class that finished about a half hour ago.

On the insurance point: I’m 29, married, clean record, 12+ years with Geico, and financed a 2023 CB500X. I’m paying $25/month for insurance. It’s great.
To be fair armored gear probably wouldn't save against a break or torn ligament. It's more for road rash and certain impact zones, you can still catch a foot under something or twist something enough to do damage. Look at Marc Marquez and he gets the best gear in the world.
@@damiankrol5879 no, not at all. I wear everything I can including the air bag vests now days. I got road rash when I was younger and I've never got on a bike since without all my gear. Getting dirt and gravel scrubbed out of open wounds isn't something I want to go through again.

Don't forget earplugs! From the time I decided that I wanted to get my license it was a total of 5 days. I decided to get my license on a Thursday and was at the DMV to show my certificate that following Monday. Before that I had absolutely no idea on how to operate anything on a motorcycle and had never been on or near one. During that 5 day period I bought my gear, signed up for and passed the MSF course and got my M endorsement.
Great advice on sitting on everything you can toss a leg over. I drooled over the Honda Rebel platform as my first bike for months. I finally got to sit on one and absolutely hated everything about it (I'm tall and round = not a good fit) So I had to jump back to the drawing board. Ended up with a Vulcan S and absolutely love it.
I was chasing used Honda Rebels all over my state. Finally, I showed my Husband a Honda Shadow Aero 750. It's a little bigger than I wanted, but I love it. One recommendation. Have a mechanic look over the motorcycle. Lucky for me. The Husband is my mechanic. Enjoy the Ride.
As a squid in training I went out on my Honda cr 250r dirt bike two days ago (day before I turned 17) ripping down the street, pulled out on to the road on the way back and whoop low side! That race motor is weird as hell to get used too with 0 low end, nice mid range, and holy shit torque cliff, got lucky and didn’t get crayon-ed that bad, wasted a good pair of jeans tho. Taught me a good lesson, wear gear! Even mild road rash sucks ass, I wore a helmet and gloves (thank god) and my gloves damn near burned through, wear gloves made to slide on pavement not dirt. Btw managed to convince mom that it was a bicycle accident, bike was fine. Getting a 300 soon (still not sure which) so I have an excuse to get street gear.
I got a 1982 Honda Magna for free from my uncle and cant wait to get it done so i can ride it again i learned on that magna and a long time ago i haven't see the bike in 10 years then 2 weeks ago he gave it to me and i got to take it home needs some work to run again but its worth it

I was scheduled for the MSF class with the local Harley Davidson dealer for the beginning of April (first of season), it got cancelled. Now scheduled for 30 April class....crossing fingers that it goes as scheduled!
Well, you live and learn. Thats why videos like this one are great for ppl considering riding. I too bought a bike before I took the MSF course. I bought it because I loved how it looked. After the 2nd day when I passed my road test, I just knew my bike was probably a mistake for my first bike. It’s a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 classic, a beast of a bike, just under 700 lbs. I dropped the MSF bike twice during the figure 8 turns. That was a Yamaha 250, much smaller and lighter. I had zero confidence in my ability to take my Vulcan out for the first time. I was so apprehensive, unsure, and even a little afraid. It took me a good half hour to psych myself up and go for my first ride. That anxiety lasted for probably my next 7 to 10 rides. I finally lost the anxiety and I’m improving everyday, and now I’m having fun out there. I continue watching instructional videos and practice. First few times out though, not so much fun.
I passed my MSF course on the first try, with a new helmet, lightly used moto jacket, very used moto gloves, and new riding jeans. First bike a 2003 Suzuki Marauder 800. Ended up with electrical gremlins so traded it in for a Yamaha Royal Star 1300 in much better condition. Though I am making payments and my insurance is expensive. A much better bike for me, though the Marauder was a good bike to ride for a couple months. This year I've signed up for 3 more advanced riding classes. An intermediate course which I think is kind of the same drills as the basic one but I can use my own bike. Then a cornering clinic and finally a braking clinic. Can't get too good at riding, plus they're fun.
Did most of what papa noob suggested. Went and bought leather pants and jacket, boots and cold weather gloves and a new (last years model) HJC 5 start Sharp (ECE) helmet. In the UK so did the CBT (compulsory basic training) and bought a used Cat-n (insurance write off, two bent levers and a front fender and side panel needing some fibre glass) for a third of the new price GSX-S125 with just over 1,000 mile and under a year old. Took 1 day to fix and pass an MOT. Sold a year later with 5,000 miles on it and made a profit that paid the insurance and tax for the year. Since upgraded all the gear (Shoe X-Spirit 3, alpine stars and RST leathers and gloves, tcx ankle riding boots and a 251 mile CBR650R after passing my full license! This year will go for a full race leathers prior to my first track day in May and have bought my dream Ducati V2 ex demo bike ! Life’s good for us squid 🦑

If it makes you feel any better, even though I’ve been riding for a few seasons and my bike is ready to rock, it’s raining and 0 degrees out. No riding for me. Yesterday was sunny and positive 8 degrees....and I am in lock down with my kids all day!!
Great info, I am 64 and ride 3 bikes, 2019 Z400, 2018 Ninja 400 KRT and my Versys 650 for my longer rides. I am lucky that all 3 bikes fit great, and I can ride any one of them all day.
Always wear a belt with a big metal buckle when sitting on bikes that don't belong to you. That way if can't remember which bikes you have already sat on, you can just look and see if there are stretches on the gas tank, if there are chances are you already sat on that one.
I know someone who’s first bike was a 1984 Harley soft tail 1500 he got it in 2003 and is still riding it 17 years later definitely has the power of a forever bike
On hitting the parking lot with friends when starting out, I can't speak for every experienced rider, but the group my wife and I ride with still does this. Even without a newb in tow. We treat it like an impromptu bike rodeo, running the lines at almost a dead stop, doing circles and figure 8s in as small and area as we can, things like that. And if we have a beginner with, we use this time to help them learn things not covered in classes, as it was when we were just starting out. We also have the newb lead the group, on the road, so they can set the pace they are comfortable with. The main thing is, we try to keep it fun, and safe. And I always have fun showing them that bike size is irrelevant, by maneuvering a Goldwing or my VTX 1800c, like it's a 650. Helps the ones that think a bike can be too big, to overcome that mental obstacle. On gear, I take more of a let those who ride, decide type of view. As a former EMT, and ER assistant, I have seen people with no gear only get a little scraped up, and people in full gear, die at the scene. I have a friend who rolled along 200 feet of chain link fence, with the top of his head, in a helmet, end up with some bruises and a bald spot, and another in a full face helmet die, despite my best efforts to save him, because hs slid face down, in dirt and gravel. His chin bar acted like an excavator bucket, making him aspirate that sand and we couldn't establish an airway. I lost one of my closest friends that day, because of how he landed. And let's talk about the elephant in the room here. DOT helmets Max out around 14 MPH, in testing, and the company is who does the test, so they can stack the deck, by making a helmet stronger in tested areas. The chin bar is not one of them. They also don't test to destruction. Hence why my wife run helmets that meet SNELL standards. The safety level tracks in the US require. Just something to consider. I rarely wear one, except when the law mandates the use of one, at the track, or in cold weather. I know, understand, and accept the risks, because when your time is up, it's up. I also look into the statistics, and helmet law states have the same accisent rate, as optional states, but choice states have lower fatalities. And they have more licensed riders. Education, saves more lives than legislation.
Here’s my deal, I’m 20 and just moved out, got a job that pays pretty well, well enough to have bought my first bike before I took the MSF course, instead of opting for something reliable and economic… I got a KTM 450. For those that don’t know you cannot ride a KTM 450 on the street anyway, I threw it in a rented trailer and drove it home behind my Honda Accord, not knowing I would have to light the bike and get mirrors, plates, insurance, all of that good stuff. I spent probably the first 4-5 weeks prior to my MSF course practicing in the dirt which made me well prepared for the course but also beat up the bike. After about an extra $1500 and 2 months I’m finally getting to put it on the streets this upcoming weekend and am more excited than you can imagine. A costly and time consuming journey is finally going to pay off
Went into my motorcycle course with a 100% confidence that I'd buy a naked bike and left with an urge to buy a cruiser. It changed me, it really did. I love my Magna though.
I'd never ridden a cruiser and always made jokes about the 'old guy' bikes. They I rode my dads road king on a 8 hour trip and completely changed my opinion on them. Then I rode a vrod and holy cow, what a fun bike! Now I have a sport bike and a cruiser. Different bikes for different uses. Hopefully soon I'll also have a dual sport for trail riding. Then I'll decide what the next one I need is. I'm thinking in a couple years when the new triumph rocket is a good price on the used market I'll pick one up. Something about a muscle cruiser is just awesome.

Me financed a ninja 650 just had a helmet and riding gloves I was 29 so I borrowed a friends bike I had rode dirt bikes so had the clutch stuff mainly down miraculously passed the driving test then straight to the show room
I pulled a yam lol started on a 04 cbr600f4i bought a cheap helmet from amazon (which almost fell off when I hit the freeway lol). Then bought a proper helmet from cycle gear.
Ive been riding 2 years (going into year 3). Bought a used 2012 Suzuki GSX-650F with low km, i used my helmet from auto racing (RaceQuip Pro15, super heavy and loud but snell rated) and i bought the cheapest jacket and gloves i could from my local store. Ill be looking to upgrade gear this year for sure. haha
I've been riding for almost one year with around 2400 miles under the saddle, and I still don't have riding pants. I also bought my first bike brand new instead of used. When I took my MSF course last year March, I had normal jeans, regular jacket, my old Army gloves, and a new Shoei helmet.
My job has dictated that I attend work every day throughout lockdown . Riding my Yamaha MT10 to work on silent UK roads for weeks on end was my guilty pleasure.

Bought a helmet and a pair of mechanic gloves for the MSF course. Passed the course first try, went and bought an over priced sportster 883. 2 weeks later I was bored with it already. And after about 3500 miles and 2 months on that bike I traded it in for a brand new 2018 HD Heritage Classic.
20,512 miles and 1yr and 8 months later got hit by someone not paying attention. The bike was totalled and I bought an Indian chieftain.

Hey Yammie! I just recently taken the MSF course and it was very informative. It was a two-day course which involved 2 1/2 hours of classroom time and 8-hour range. I will say I was really nervous seeing how I never rode a motorcycle and had a couple of fears with it. First day as I began to ride the motorcycle I would release the clutch too early and the bike would stall mid course. I would apologize to the instructors and they would be cool with it. They would always tell me about things to work on every time I went around the track; sometimes stuff I would repeatedly do lol. But all in all they were real cool and made it a fun experience. As the first day comes to an end I start to think about all the opportunities I had that day and what I can work on. All that night I couldn't sleep lol.
The next day we finished up the remaining exercises before the the final test. I was nervous and on top of that it was about to rain which I was definitely nervous about. It was 10 of us lined up ready to take the test and I was the last one to take. So as I watched everyone take their exam I was picturing myself in their shoes and what I would do in their situation. It was four parts I breezed through the four exam especially the last one which I am very proud of because as I was taking it it started to rain. So I am very happy with myself😊. To anyone who is thinking about taking the class or is already in the process learn as much as possible because it is very helpful. Thank you Yammie again for the vid. You touched basis on all the stuff I was worried about when I first ride. I am getting my bike towards the end of the month which I paid cash. Very excited to be out on that open road🛵I couldn't find a cool motorcycle emoji😂

They will also test you at the end of the course on what you learned and once you pass you can go to the bmv or whoever you go for your motor license to get your motorcycle endorsement.

MSF was great, it made learning to ride almost easy. Slow speed maneuvers are no joke. Jamming around little corners, emergency swerves, and stops. Getting friendly with a hand clutch, building confidence!!!! Do IT!!!!

As far as this list goes, I warmed up on a Honda Ruckus. Bought more than adequate protection for the busy summer roads here. I am looking at new helmets and armor. My Lugz might need swapping out, shifting isn’t comfortable yet.

I just bought my first bike 3 weeks ago. I choose a 2019 Duke 390, I am a 5”7 chick and the height was originally an issue BUT I got a 1.5”-2” height insert that goes in your shoes. With practice and the inserts mounting the bike has become so much easier and I don’t stress it anymore.
I came to UA-cam and hit up my favorite creators like Yammie, Fortnine, Moto Jitsu, Etc for advise and ideas on bikes, Gear, tech, mods, all that.

As a new rider, I appreciate these videos. Expecally as a female rider, I've just bought my first bike a 2020 Dongfang 250cc (Off-brand Honda). She was used on facebook market. I need to work on turning big time, dropped her today and I was so scared, but everything was fine, and I knew all riders do it. Broke a mirror and my clutch already ordered new parts for her. Still stalling it here and there, but from knowing nothing to getting it to 3rd gear, I'm proud. I have all but riding pants but I haven't came across one's I like. Hoping I can ride her to work and everything becomes second nature. Shocked to say I was scared of sportbikes, motorcycles, etc. I faced it and I told myself, maybe this isn't for me, Yet here I am! Can't wait to continue my jonrney.

Patho -the only info i can give you would be my experience with the Bell helmets. I have the qualifier and Race star. The Race Star is the only one i use now. Both of them fit snug for the first 400 miles. Roughly 4 rides. After that it fit perfectly. I would recommend getting a cloth measurer and measure your head and go by the manufacturer size chart on what ever brand you choose. Also, know the shape of your head vs the shape of the helmet. That will greatly improve the fitment. Oval vs intermediate oval
My riding started in 1957, and motorcycles that don't leave me stranded at the side of the road have more to offer than oil spewing classics that need every nut and bolt tightened weekly. These are the good old days, and you keep me up to date on the neat new stuff. Many thanks.
8:27 This is extremely important but equally overlooked advice! I went for a ride in my neighborhood and decided to skip all the gear except for my helmet, because I simply will not ride without a helmet, period.
The whole ride went fine, even when it was inappropriately spirited, up until I saw a girl and wanted to show off. I did my tire warming well but unfortunately took a turn with too tight of an apex at FIFTEEN whole mph, lol, and my front tire dipped into the gutter sending my bike, and myself face first into the asphalt. The face shield and chin of the helmet were shredded but because of them I only broke my collar bone and walked home. Helmets are very important! Boots are also very important; At a different time and with a different bike I was out for a ride and got too caught up in how tightly I could take a roundabout. At this point I had about three and a half years of riding experience but even still, when I felt the peg scrape and the bike starting to lay down I panicked and put my left foot down to try to stand it back up. At the time I was only wearing some cheap, non supportive sneakers and my foot caught traction and stopped immediately while the bike kept going. I crawled to the side of the road and after a while somebody stopped to offer help and I asked them to help me up but once I was standing upright it felt like my foot was just dangling loosely from the rest of my leg and I had to lay right back down because of the pain; The police also impounded my bike because I didn't have anybody to pick it up for me... I went to the hospital and ended up needing to have my ankle set and later on to have almost $3,000 worth of surgery so that it could heal properly because according to the surgeon "It looked a lot worse once we got in there than the x-rays showed." Even after that it still bothers me a lot even now, two years later. I've broken a few bones before including my knee and even though it really sucked at the time, I managed to heal well enough to start running and jumping and overall performing about the same as before. Breaking my ankle this way has actually changed my life... When I am able to "run" it's more of a limping jog and my ankle hurts like hell most of the time when I'm just sitting around not even doing anything. I really do think that this would have at least not been so bad if I was wearing some type of boots or other ankle support.
Ight that does it, I'm getting boots. I'm around all these harley guys too much whose only gear is sunglasses. I felt like I was doing fine with a full helmet, jacket and gloves. But I'm going all in, it can't hurt lol

Once you start wearing light weight boots on your bike, no other shoe will do. I like the zip up side combat style boots. Amazon has them. Light weight and inexpensive. ($60ish) I got a summer and winter pair.

To be honest you can get away with minimal gear on slower non performance oriented bikes. It really all boils down to not doing retarded shit like speeding or riding aggressively.
Bought my first bike at the age of 53. put 1000 miles within 6 months. fast forward 5 months later (today) Put the bike back on the road after a long winter. Still love it. Not going to get another one. One thing I like about long flat seat is I can slide forward or back to change my position ever so slightly. Makes for a nice option on longer rides. 1974 CB750 Four

I think the new vs used purchase is an interesting convo to jump into.
I personally went brand new with financing for my first bike, but went something around the 300CC mark to keep that cost down. I knew this wouldnt be my forever bike, but more than enough to get me started. The big reason I went new instead of used was because I needed the bike for my daily commute, and not knowing anything about bikes in general didn't want to run the risk of being sold a used lemon. I chose to trust that even if I had a brand new lemon, I'd be covered by warranties and many insurers are great with brand new vehicle policies. I also felt I could trust a new bike to be more reliable for my daily commute than the potential for the used bike to fall apart on me on Thursday... and noone wants to explain to Karen why they can't make it into work...
It's maybe ok for those of us with a buddy who can check out the bike for us, or those of us who are just riding for hobby, but well worth considering if the bike is going to be your daily driver.

My first ride was a CBR1000RR five years ago, and I'm glad I'm still in one piece! Dropped it a few times, luckily no accidents and still riding. If I could go back I'll start with a 600 instead.

I had never driven a motorcycle when I took the motorcycle course. I was the oldest (63), and I dropped my bike twice, but still passed the course...by just one point! It was one of the scariest and happiest moments of my life! Having alot of fun now!
I took the 3 day NH State course to get my license as I hadn't ridden anything since I was a teenager. That was 16yrs ago. My first bike was a 79' KZ 1000ST I paid $400 for & put another $400 into to get it on the road. It was effectively an MSF Course. One of the Instructors almost shit himself when I told him what my bike was. He literally said "You do know that's the fastest factory bike of it's year, right?!" Still alive, never wrecked, still have that bike.
The biggest help is understanding how a clutch works. Knowing how to drive a manual transmission car really helped me learn on a motorcycle.
My first bike was a new $16k Harley with a 96ci engine. I dropped it once. Right hand turns from a stop are the trouble area. I bought it without knowing how to ride. They delivered it to my house. I practiced getting the feel of how the clutch engaged, then rode it around the neighborhood until I felt confident enough to take it on the faster roads.
Talking about gear... I got myself full Alpinestars and a decent full helm and 2 months into driving my motorcycle a car literally drove in front of me when I was 2m away from it going 60 km/h +-... Walked away with a broken finger but bikey was a total loss tho so don't cut corners on gear, trust me the protection was broken in a lot of places... Imagine if they were not there.
(The car was in fault but I learned so fast to drive like I'm invisible)
Proud of myself! I passed my motorcycle test for my license on the first try! Examiner said I was an exceptional beginner! The reason is I read up on my bike for two years before I bought it. A Yamaha FJ600!

I took the MSF course in November last year, before I bought the helmet, and that was a mistake-helmets are very personal. After the course, I got the helmet and gloves. Two weeks later, around Thanksgiving, I acquired a 2006 Kawasaki EX500, mechanically sound but with some cosmetic damage to the upper fairing and a few scratches, for $1,200. Then came riding pants, a jacket, padding and the boots. I've probably spent as much on gear as on the bike. I'm 3,200 miles into the experience and enjoying every minute. The bike is as fast as I need it to be, easily keeping up with interstate traffic, and insurance is only $20 a month.
Hey Yammie, I'm soaking up a lot of good content on your videos. 50 year old noob here getting into a '72 Yahama R5c, 350 two-stroke. It's my dad's bike that I rode all over on when I was a kid. You've got a great presentation format and wit on these videos. Right on for using "ensure" vs. "insure" in the tile and Chopin's Prelude No. 4 in the background is a nice touch too. Keep e'm coming.

I just took the temp test on the 3rd, because I was off of work, and I signed up for the MSF class this past Monday. They had one opening for the one this week. I took the class part on Wednesday evening, and just did the first day of riding today. I had ridden bikes, about 25ish years ago, and also had tried my dad's old Honda Trail 70 mini bike way back in the day, but I didn't even know the kill switch from the starter switch before today.
I think that driving an old Miata for the last 7ish years has helped me a lot, because I already knew about using the clutch and changing gears, and also being careful with things like taking turns without oversteering and stuff like that. It's pretty easy to break traction in my Miata, especially if the ground is wet.
I had a lot of fun today. I used a Yamaha 200 cc single cylinder, that kinda looked like a dirt bike. It was really cool to actually get to ride a motorcycle for the first time in my life.
I started on a 250 dual sport for 5 years, and now I’m on a 501. Definitely recommend learning on a smaller bike. Just trust me .
I recommend leaning on a smaller dual sport as well and getting plenty of off road time. Dirt bike riders make better street bike riders.
Failed my MSF the first time, re-tested 2 months later and passed with 86%. Bought my first bike new, 2023 Vulcan S (I know, your faaaavorite). Dropped it once (gently) during the test ride. Stuck with it, now I love it. Super nimble and forgiving, and my insurance is like $20/month.

I had about 600 miles under my belt when I took my msf course. 2 out of 6 of us stayed and completed the course. Just me and a older gent whos been riding 40 years, and I got the same score as him and we both passed

I’ll throw in a couple more suggestions… choose a bike with ABS (many older models don’t have it.) It hides a multitude of braking sins that may be committed by a newbie. Choose a bike with a gear indicator… a newbie has enough to think about without having to remember which gear they’re in. Learning the basics in a compound.. for sure. I don’t know about the States but here in the U.K. it’s actually a compulsory part of the test (“Mod 1”) to complete a series of manoeuvres in an enclosed compound, before taking the road test (“Mod 2”,) if you want to ride anything over 125cc. Seat height.. for me this is proportionate to the weight of the bike. At 5’8” my Kawasaki Z1000SX seat is on the high side (balls of the feet at the lights) but at 500-odd lbs that feels OK. My Suzuki M1800R (M109R) has a LOW seat, I can “flat foot”:it at the lights and at just shy of 800lbs I wouldn’t want it any other way. I should add a disclaimer to the next tip, because it’s counter intuitive, but I was advised not to under-horse myself too much with my first bike otherwise I’d be trading it in within weeks - once you’re on the road it’s amazing how fast you progress by yourself, just putting the miles on the clock, compared with how you did under instruction. As long as you’re capable of self restraint, even the most powerful bike is only as intimidating as your right wrist allows it to be. But if you’re a hot head (or anything other than a well balanced, sensible, responsible individual with reasonable self control), please ignore the last bit.
Passed my MSF in a Shoei I bought, some work boots, cheap-o gloves, and long sleeve shirts almost 3 years ago now. After I passed, got riding jeans, boots and jacket, stuck to the crappy gloves, which eventually got replaced, and still have the helmet. It's a fairly decent helmet. Bought my bike new, 2017 Yamaha FZ-07, and have dropped it three times, all just at a standstill, only damage was to the brake lever, which I still have because it's not bad enough to even worry about replacing. Just slightly bent at the end.
Honestly, there's no reason not to buy a bike new if you can afford it reasonably. Used has the perk of being cheap and insurance being inexpensive compared to new, but you never really know what you're gonna get in terms of quality until you've had it a while and come to understand its quirks. New has the benefit of learning the quirks before they become real problems, so you're ready to deal with them when they come up.
My insurance is actually really inexpensive. Less than what my car insurance is for roughly the same coverage. Having a spotless driving record and being over 25 probably helps there.
I wore my helmet around the apartment to get used to it and help break it in before I got my bike, good tip!
If you buy it from a descent shop they will alter it so it fits, that can be different cheek pads, top pad and chin bar pad. Worth the effort.
I took a riding course when I was 16 and shortly after that we moved to Florida and never got another bike. I am now 46 and some of my coworkers ride and I am thinking about getting back into riding.
I took an MSF class in April of last year and it was my first time ever being on a motorcycle. I picked up on it pretty quickly though and passed the test fairly comfortably. That said, I've learned and developed A LOT in the last year of actually being out riding. I have over 1400 miles in so far in 2022! I bought a 2002 Harley Road King Classic as I wanted a touring/cruiser bike and I love it, aside from it weighing close to 900 lbs. Heavy SOB. I've been riding anywhere from 20 degrees F to 100F so far.
You’re very lucky. I quit just before taking the test. I felt extremely rushed going through the course. I was very frustrated and panicky. I now have a 12 dyna switchback in which I ride 1st gear in my circle of a neighborhood. Had it up to 23 mph and 2nd gear! Yup I’m on fire! 😀🤣😂

Grew up with a dad that rides and goes on tours where he camps along the way. He signed me up for a course a couple months ago. When I got my bike I told the salesman I wanted to get into touring too and liked a more upright position. I ended up with a BMW F900R that I’m financing. (I went in with the idea that I would keep the bike for a few years without outpacing it.) My dads been giving me advice and a book on proficient motorcycling. Went on an hour long ride recently and he followed and coached me over an intercom system. I have much less money now but i have a bike so it’s okay.
I felt the whole "walk around with your helmet on" I remember doing that exact thing.
Talk to your insurance company about the Honda VFR being a "touring" bike instead of a sport bike. I did. Geico granted me the "touring" status and it saved me $1,200 per year. You can also limit the number of miles you put on your bike per year. Now this won't help if you plan on daily commuting, but if you are a weekend rider, it can save you $$$.
I’m at my 5th bike (lucky me!). Did not follow these rules right away with my first bike and I rode 15k miles on my first year (no car back then 😢). Been riding for 19 years now and I would recommend the exact same about equip yourself well no matter the type of bike you own. I had the chance to road test more than 100 bikes and believe me, when you’re riding, sudden huge smile appears on your baby face and you don’t really care what your ride looks like 😉. My advice is get the right equipment, buy a cheap bike as your first (I dropped my first bike a few times as well 😮) and feel free! Keep up your good vidz yammie ❤
Learned in the late ‘80’s on a borrowed Honda CX 500 with a Windjammer fairing complete with K-mart radio. Went to the DMV to pick up a motorcycle riders manual and they were out. Lady behind the desk suggested I just try the written test, so I did and passed it and got a student endorsement with no book and about two hours of riding experience. Three months later my uncle wanted his bike back so I went down on motorcycle test day, took the cone killing skills test, and walked out with my M endorsement. Fifteen years later (2005) I bought my first bike, a used 2003 BMW K1200RS and within three months rode it four states away to Sturgis for the rally. A few years later I took the MSF course at the HD dealer with a buddy who was buying his first bike. Still own the K12RS and am currently riding it naked (the bike, not me) since I’m changing all the fluids and filters.
I used to have a friend that rode a K1200RS, those are gorgeous! Didn't know anyone besides Harley riders went to Sturgis.
Got my Harley Davidson Rider Academy Completed on 9/27, picked up my pre-owned 2016 HD SG on 9/28, and got my M1 on 10/2. Your video are very informative, especially for us noobs.

Glad to have found this channel. Looking forward to taking my first MSF course at the end of the month, as a birthday present to me. Have been researching everything I can, running insurance quotes, went to the dealer (sat on an Indian Scout Bobber that tickled my fancy…was truly a test of will to not just go ahead and buy the thing even though I’d be putting half down since the plan was to buy a Rebel 500 with cash outright), and honestly…this month might just feel like an eternity, but super excited to get out on the road and enjoy my time with all these great Yammie tips in mind.

The MSF course is a must in my opinion. I learned how to ride on an R1 but its been 10 years since i was on it. Loved the course. I will probably start taking other advanced courses soon. Just got a brand new R6!!! 😁

I started with a 150cc scooter. After I got my current motorcycle, a Honda Shadow Aero, I got my motorcycle learners permit for some practice with a heavy bike and getting used to the clutch and how it rides before taking the endorsement test. The guy who administered the test told me that he was glad to see that I had some experience and that I spent the summer getting to know my bike, because he sees most new riders just get a bike then immediately try and take the test only to fail because they dont know their bike. Motorcycle safety course was a thought for me at first, but it was way too expensive in my state (even taking and failing the test 10 times would be cheaper) and I heard from people who actually took it, that you have to use the bikes they provide and they are underpowered for someone as heavy as I am. Basically they were 200 cc bikes. I got to heavy for my scooter so those bikes wouldn't work. Mine is also a cruiser and they used something closer to dirt bikes. Totally different riding posture. I have no interest in a motorcycle that I have to lean forward on and cant sit up straight lol.

I failed the MSF course on the first test but passed aces on the re-take. It helps if the bike you get/have to use actually has functioning brakes, a motor that isnt halfway falling out of the bike preventing your foot from fitting on the shifter and of course a throttle that doesn’t dead spin an 3/4 of a rotation before the bike actually responds. Ya just take it in stride, ask for a different bike on the re-take and then pass everything then. Its also waaay less stressful the 2nd time around. The hard brake test though....with worn out drum brakes....lol what a joke that was. I never stood a chance : /

just be sure to take his advice about bringing your own helmet because the helmets provided are kinda gross. Especially if your'e in the second MSF class of the day you will be wearing a helmet with fresh soaking sweat from the previous class that finished about a half hour ago.

To be fair armored gear probably wouldn't save against a break or torn ligament. It's more for road rash and certain impact zones, you can still catch a foot under something or twist something enough to do damage. Look at Marc Marquez and he gets the best gear in the world.

@@damiankrol5879 no, not at all. I wear everything I can including the air bag vests now days. I got road rash when I was younger and I've never got on a bike since without all my gear. Getting dirt and gravel scrubbed out of open wounds isn't something I want to go through again.

From the time I decided that I wanted to get my license it was a total of 5 days. I decided to get my license on a Thursday and was at the DMV to show my certificate that following Monday. Before that I had absolutely no idea on how to operate anything on a motorcycle and had never been on or near one. During that 5 day period I bought my gear, signed up for and passed the MSF course and got my M endorsement.
I dont really own a bike yet...I sometimes just walk around in my brother's old helmet just for that feeling 😅
Great advice on sitting on everything you can toss a leg over. I drooled over the Honda Rebel platform as my first bike for months. I finally got to sit on one and absolutely hated everything about it (I'm tall and round = not a good fit) So I had to jump back to the drawing board. Ended up with a Vulcan S and absolutely love it.
I was chasing used Honda Rebels all over my state. Finally, I showed my Husband a Honda Shadow Aero 750. It's a little bigger than I wanted, but I love it. One recommendation. Have a mechanic look over the motorcycle. Lucky for me. The Husband is my mechanic. Enjoy the Ride.
As a squid in training I went out on my Honda cr 250r dirt bike two days ago (day before I turned 17) ripping down the street, pulled out on to the road on the way back and whoop low side! That race motor is weird as hell to get used too with 0 low end, nice mid range, and holy shit torque cliff, got lucky and didn’t get crayon-ed that bad, wasted a good pair of jeans tho. Taught me a good lesson, wear gear! Even mild road rash sucks ass, I wore a helmet and gloves (thank god) and my gloves damn near burned through, wear gloves made to slide on pavement not dirt.
Btw managed to convince mom that it was a bicycle accident, bike was fine. Getting a 300 soon (still not sure which) so I have an excuse to get street gear.
I got a 1982 Honda Magna for free from my uncle and cant wait to get it done so i can ride it again i learned on that magna and a long time ago i haven't see the bike in 10 years then 2 weeks ago he gave it to me and i got to take it home needs some work to run again but its worth it

I was scheduled for the MSF class with the local Harley Davidson dealer for the beginning of April (first of season), it got cancelled. Now scheduled for 30 April class....crossing fingers that it goes as scheduled!

Well, you live and learn. Thats why videos like this one are great for ppl considering riding. I too bought a bike before I took the MSF course. I bought it because I loved how it looked. After the 2nd day when I passed my road test, I just knew my bike was probably a mistake for my first bike. It’s a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 classic, a beast of a bike, just under 700 lbs. I dropped the MSF bike twice during the figure 8 turns. That was a Yamaha 250, much smaller and lighter. I had zero confidence in my ability to take my Vulcan out for the first time. I was so apprehensive, unsure, and even a little afraid. It took me a good half hour to psych myself up and go for my first ride. That anxiety lasted for probably my next 7 to 10 rides. I finally lost the anxiety and I’m improving everyday, and now I’m having fun out there. I continue watching instructional videos and practice. First few times out though, not so much fun.
I passed my MSF course on the first try, with a new helmet, lightly used moto jacket, very used moto gloves, and new riding jeans.
First bike a 2003 Suzuki Marauder 800. Ended up with electrical gremlins so traded it in for a Yamaha Royal Star 1300 in much better condition. Though I am making payments and my insurance is expensive. A much better bike for me, though the Marauder was a good bike to ride for a couple months.
This year I've signed up for 3 more advanced riding classes. An intermediate course which I think is kind of the same drills as the basic one but I can use my own bike. Then a cornering clinic and finally a braking clinic. Can't get too good at riding, plus they're fun.
Did most of what papa noob suggested.
Went and bought leather pants and jacket, boots and cold weather gloves and a new (last years model) HJC 5 start Sharp (ECE) helmet.
In the UK so did the CBT (compulsory basic training) and bought a used Cat-n (insurance write off, two bent levers and a front fender and side panel needing some fibre glass) for a third of the new price GSX-S125 with just over 1,000 mile and under a year old.
Took 1 day to fix and pass an MOT.
Sold a year later with 5,000 miles on it and made a profit that paid the insurance and tax for the year.
Since upgraded all the gear (Shoe X-Spirit 3, alpine stars and RST leathers and gloves, tcx ankle riding boots and a 251 mile CBR650R after passing my full license!
This year will go for a full race leathers prior to my first track day in May and have bought my dream Ducati V2 ex demo bike !

If it makes you feel any better, even though I’ve been riding for a few seasons and my bike is ready to rock, it’s raining and 0 degrees out. No riding for me. Yesterday was sunny and positive 8 degrees....and I am in lock down with my kids all day!!
Take this time to order all your gear: armored jacket, armored pants, gauntlets, racing boots, and helmet. Alpinestars is the best brand.

Great info, I am 64 and ride 3 bikes, 2019 Z400, 2018 Ninja 400 KRT and my Versys 650 for my longer rides. I am lucky that all 3 bikes fit great, and I can ride any one of them all day.
Always wear a belt with a big metal buckle when sitting on bikes that don't belong to you. That way if can't remember which bikes you have already sat on, you can just look and see if there are stretches on the gas tank, if there are chances are you already sat on that one.
I'm starting off on a rebel. Haven't made my mind up yet on the 300 or 500. Just getting back into after 20 years

I know someone who’s first bike was a 1984 Harley soft tail 1500 he got it in 2003 and is still riding it 17 years later definitely has the power of a forever bike
On hitting the parking lot with friends when starting out, I can't speak for every experienced rider, but the group my wife and I ride with still does this. Even without a newb in tow. We treat it like an impromptu bike rodeo, running the lines at almost a dead stop, doing circles and figure 8s in as small and area as we can, things like that. And if we have a beginner with, we use this time to help them learn things not covered in classes, as it was when we were just starting out. We also have the newb lead the group, on the road, so they can set the pace they are comfortable with.
The main thing is, we try to keep it fun, and safe. And I always have fun showing them that bike size is irrelevant, by maneuvering a Goldwing or my VTX 1800c, like it's a 650. Helps the ones that think a bike can be too big, to overcome that mental obstacle.
On gear, I take more of a let those who ride, decide type of view. As a former EMT, and ER assistant, I have seen people with no gear only get a little scraped up, and people in full gear, die at the scene. I have a friend who rolled along 200 feet of chain link fence, with the top of his head, in a helmet, end up with some bruises and a bald spot, and another in a full face helmet die, despite my best efforts to save him, because hs slid face down, in dirt and gravel.
His chin bar acted like an excavator bucket, making him aspirate that sand and we couldn't establish an airway. I lost one of my closest friends that day, because of how he landed.
And let's talk about the elephant in the room here. DOT helmets Max out around 14 MPH, in testing, and the company is who does the test, so they can stack the deck, by making a helmet stronger in tested areas. The chin bar is not one of them. They also don't test to destruction.
Hence why my wife run helmets that meet SNELL standards. The safety level tracks in the US require.
Just something to consider. I rarely wear one, except when the law mandates the use of one, at the track, or in cold weather. I know, understand, and accept the risks, because when your time is up, it's up. I also look into the statistics, and helmet law states have the same accisent rate, as optional states, but choice states have lower fatalities. And they have more licensed riders.
Education, saves more lives than legislation.
Here’s my deal, I’m 20 and just moved out, got a job that pays pretty well, well enough to have bought my first bike before I took the MSF course, instead of opting for something reliable and economic… I got a KTM 450.
For those that don’t know you cannot ride a KTM 450 on the street anyway, I threw it in a rented trailer and drove it home behind my Honda Accord, not knowing I would have to light the bike and get mirrors, plates, insurance, all of that good stuff. I spent probably the first 4-5 weeks prior to my MSF course practicing in the dirt which made me well prepared for the course but also beat up the bike. After about an extra $1500 and 2 months I’m finally getting to put it on the streets this upcoming weekend and am more excited than you can imagine. A costly and time consuming journey is finally going to pay off
Went into my motorcycle course with a 100% confidence that I'd buy a naked bike and left with an urge to buy a cruiser. It changed me, it really did. I love my Magna though.
I'd never ridden a cruiser and always made jokes about the 'old guy' bikes. They I rode my dads road king on a 8 hour trip and completely changed my opinion on them. Then I rode a vrod and holy cow, what a fun bike! Now I have a sport bike and a cruiser. Different bikes for different uses. Hopefully soon I'll also have a dual sport for trail riding. Then I'll decide what the next one I need is. I'm thinking in a couple years when the new triumph rocket is a good price on the used market I'll pick one up. Something about a muscle cruiser is just awesome.

@@thewindthatshakesbar The magnas are great! I'd ride a Honda spree if it's all I could afford lol, anything to get out on two wheels. I rode older Honda's for years and always enjoyed them. Every once in a while I'll look for a cb125, an 81 was my first bike and I always wanted to build a cafe racer out of one.

I loved nakeds till I started riding the. Forward controls are much more comfy imo. Prolly gonna grab a cruiser or majesty next . Cxt700N is nice but about 5times out of my price range 😂

You need to find a new dealer, I am harley rider and when I got my last bike it was a +30k CVO they said sit on it, rev the engine, the only thing they didn't let me do was take it out of a ride

Bought a Zero SR/S premium new as a first bike. 5 months in pretty much ride 5 days a week, so far so good. Dreading the day I drop this beauty. I hear it's inevitable lol.
Progressive insurance had by far cheaper insurance when I financed my bike. Everyone else was in the thousands whereas Progressive was only around 600.
Best option is to buy one outright. I bought my first one and the insurance was and still is only $178 a year from Progressive.

Just the opposite for me. Flo's quote on a 2011 zx10r was $4638.00 a year coverage, compared to the little green lizard was $658 a year both are full coverage.

Try going through Harley davidson insurance, even if you dont own a harley theyll insure your bike. I financed mine, and its only 90dollars a month
