I've done this many times in the past you need hot water and you need some soap in the water. It also helps to submerge the entire guitar under the water so that when you clear the paint it doesn't clump. You should have done the entire body in the pink and the blue and then done the other half with wayless paint so that it was easier to clear the paint from the surface of the water
I think a fair few rounds of masking tape would also do the trick. Submerge til you hit the tape then get it out to dry a week or two. After that tape the edge of the dipped side and then proceed to dip the other. As long as your tape isn't strong enough to damage the dip, i think that would work.
Honestly, if you fill in some of the spots by hand that the paint didnt adhere to, and do a fair bit of sanding, wet sanding, etc and hit it with a few coats of clear, or maybe even some thicker enamel that would hide some of the imperfections, it wouldnt look bad at all! I'd almost like to see it with the pink and purple swirl all over, or vice versa. Always cool and inspiring to see what youre getting yourself into. Take care man!
To my memory the other hydro dipped guitars used oil paints vs spray paint. I think the total submersion is better than half and half. Looks good for a homemade job.
I'm surprised at how little I hate it! One of the things I like about this channel is that you try stuff that you don't necessarily have confidence in just to try it and as a learning experience. I went in thinking "this thing is gonna be really ugly" and you did it and now I'm thinking "huh, it's only pretty ugly."
Hey Ryan, sorry I missed the premier on this one. Just saw the video. I give you an "A" for content and effort. Whenever you feel you're done experimenting. I'm still in on it. I need practice fixing things LOL. I may not exactly go that way though. Still smiling lol.
Very cool video dude! Thank you for posting this. My inner nerd feels compelled to tell you that the body you dipped is an Ltd f-100, gnarly guitar though!
I think the graan swirls is "better" than the other but in general...er...no...thanks for taking this on! You cured me of ANY desire to do it and for that I am grateful! (Ha-Ha).
7:33 There's a little guitar shape in the middle of the paint! Late gang here, I'm sure too many ppl have beat you up over this already Ryan, but using Magic Marble's paint droppers is *much* more effective than spraying spray paint on top of the water. Also, how much sanding did you do? Paint's gotta grab onto something; there are spots the paint didn't get on that honestly look un-sanded.
Been wanting to do a Warmoth Jazzmaster build and now I'm undecided between doing a split swirl like this with different colors or a black with gold leafing or something 😂
Dude pro tip in the super sonic vid on tightening down the tremelo screws for tuning stability, Ive had this old affinity strat for probably 8 months and it goes out of tune so fast like after ten minutes of playing im in d standard lmao. I've always just assumed that the tuners were trash (which they are) but I've tightened down the tremelo screws as far as I could get them and after tuning it up and doing some aggressive playing for probably fifteen minutes all of the strings were still in tune. massive relief it just makes playing so much more enjoyable and you can just focus on getting better. Massive fan of the channel I hope that you are doing well. p.s.- would you consider buying older guitars and doing the same sort of playing demo and gutting and modding knda thing you do with the new ones. For example we are both fans of squier, it would be sick if you picked up an old squier stage master or show master strat, those things look the absolute business
Love how this dude was all like “oh this so stupid and easy haha” and then at the end was like “oh it was harder than I thought I messed it up lol😅” hahahah like buddy maybe if you did it right it would look good but you did almost every step wrong 😂
I really like the way that the yellow finish underneath peeks through, especially on the yellow green side. I think it would have helped a bit to scuff up the finish so the paint would stick better. Never hydro dipped though, so I'm not sure about why it was drying so quickly on the water. Maybe that's just a spray can thing. I know people do it with other paints but I'm not sure either lol.
i think a base coat of one of the colors, to seal the wood, would limit blisters. Could be clear too. I know the wood pulls water thats trapped by the paint. My guess on the clever hot water idea that it keeps film thinner and more even. good for less blisters and thick areas. The look is worth some trials. In any case cool conditions help avoid flaws. id dip in the shade an overcast day. I see wet sand and clear coat. so if you have a nice basecoat color, you sand into paint not wood. on the other hand maybe go for relic look with a dark red or blue with black and sand into wood
I'm not a fan of hydro dipping either, but I think this one turned out rather cool. I think if you added one more color, maybe two different shades of blue for the upper horn area that would look nice. I enjoyed the video as always.
the green turned out better than the purple, i think. makes it look like scaly dragon guitar or some D&D type of thing.....soooorta (i've never played D&D so i just made that up as a fantasy/mythical sort of reference)
Hey if you would have used better paint and Borax, it would have been better. The Borax acts like slowing agent keeping the colours from mixing together so quickly
🤔asking someone whomever has done this before would have been a better place to start. You do have a great idea. I'm wanting to do this myself to my telecaster. GOD bless you my friend!
Wrong paint for hydro dipping, you also have to put borax in the water to break the water tension and the water has to be a certain temperature, there is more to it than people think.
It's not difficult to achieve great results even your first time if you take the time to research the correct methods and materials witch are all readily available on the interwebs! It's like anything else in life, you get out of it what you put in!
if I were you, I would sit with this piece for a while. let it dry. and at the end of a hard day just lightly sand off the lumps (and vicariously sand off the lumps in my hard-days night). kinda like a relic thing i guess. i would just do that for half a year, and then try to insert electronics, and build the guitar. but, i would never do this kind of uber-hydro-dippping-whatever thing ever again.
Much too much paint. I prefer the humbrol enamel paint over a spray can, as you can more easily dip it. But for first try not bad. Now the real work starts: Sand carefully, clear coat it and buff the beauty.
Everyone is dipping guitars and they are turning out great. Hmmmm spray technique. I need to see where this goes. Psst, psst, psst. You say about getting lumps but, spray paint dries so quickly cause that's what it does and where you got the lumps you talk about. Looks like you trapped water in there too. Try using the stuff other dippers do or another floating paint you can drop in there with a tube. But yeah, sand some off and coat it like other dudes are sayin out here
Meh ! I have exact unbranded guitar it plays beautifully plays so good I installed a killbutton, I do care sir . It’s the player not the guitars fualt guitars are bad
I think you used way to much paint, once you start the decent into the bath the paint is drawn to the guitar. It should just be enough to cover the guitar in one complete dip. At least I think that is what happened. Not an expert, but I am sure someone will chime in with better insight.

@@LosTroopos yes you are correct I've done that also. But you have to use the expensive masking tape otherwise it comes off in the water.
Does it matter what kind of spray paint I use?

Cool colors and the kids were digging it. That is a success all day, priceless.
8:05ish, when your son said, "cool" that makes me so happy!
This might look neat flat sanded and then cleared.
I hear all the kids are hydro-dipping. That's one hell of a drug Ryan. And don't even get me started on microdosing.
Ah, thank you, I forgot I was going to talk to Lucy tonight....
As I would often say to my son, "Maybe from now on, you'll read the instructions..." Lol
Good choice of colors, though.
Never seen this done with spray paint before. I appreciate your devil may care approach. Just going for it. It’s fun to watch.
Nice way to spend some time with your son. More fun than finger painting for sure

You should finish it. Put it together and it's the perfect 80's guitar.

In a few years it will be on the list of most sought after guitars... just because you did it 😂
Yeah right 😂
Actually from camera distance it looks pretty cool. I was ready to hate it, but I can't.
I would imagine if you were to dry it, sand it and clear coat it, the finish could be improved.
Next refinish suggestion, multiple layers of paint then sand off at different depths. If it's good enough for Vernon Ried.....
Next time definitely primer over the paint on the body and let it dry before you dip, that'll help it stick better
The Green and lite (or lime) green looked best! My bet is you coulda dipped the entire guitar in that and it would have looked awesome!
I think it's badass but my favorite colors are also green and purple so I'm sure that influences my reaction lol
despite the imperfections, i think it looks really cool
"Maybe you should stop." Yes, I was thinking the same thing.
I think you might have fun hydro dipping a pedal. Might make a $20 pedal look cool.
Maybe just the case! I fancy a go at pedal etching.
@@Si_G Yeah, I meant just the case. Dipping the whole pedal in water and paint might not be the best idea. LOL, sorry.
Couldn't help but think how cool this scheme would look on your new duo sonic!
Honestly surprised I havent seen the double dip before. It's like an 80's metal easter egg
Will you please do this again?
Been wanting to do a Warmoth Jazzmaster build and now I'm undecided between doing a split swirl like this with different colors or a black with gold leafing or something 😂
Instead of a Glarry, it's now the Laffy Taffytar.
I'm questioning, but the green's win! Ya dun good son!

You should put the original pickups from the puresalem creep in it and tune it stupid low for testing metal amps and pedals.
The no. 1 issue is the paint you used. You should have put some borax in the water and used Magic Marble paint...
Now I know not to try this, thanks for helping me make up my mind! Love all the cool demos and interesting topics you have!
I love "I guess"
Have you thought about doing a hydro dip film? That might be cool

Can not expect the paint to adhere to a gloss paint, has to be primed.
Hydro dipping works better with regular paint instead of spray cans
Not my thing either but experience is cool. Especially if its fun to do man. I did dig the yellow/green vibe though.
Should've used painter's tape to give it cleaner edge and not have it gunk up at the water line. Idk, I've never hydro dipped before

Cool idea for a video using that body
I use a lot less paint when I do mine
I think it needed 4 color swirled like some black and white
