I'm working on a series of videos and tutorials on how to build guitar pedals like this Fuzz Factory clone. Subscribe to this channel for updates on these videos.
Check out the full guide to hydro dipping here for more best practices, tips, and common mistakes to avoid: guitargearfinder.com/guides/hydro-dip-a-guitar/

A lot of the hydro-dip instructional material I've seen recommends adding borax to the water as a a surface tension reducer. It seems to help the paint to adhere smoothly to the surface of whatever you're dipping, making it at least somewhat less "blobby." You might want the water to be a bit more than lukewarm, too. Not boiling hot, obviously, but more than room temperature.
Also, one of the best tools for clearing away the floating paint when you're ready to pull your part out appears to be crumpled-up newspaper. It seems to grab the floating film of paint well and pulls it aside more whole so you're less likely to get stay-behind fragments to deposit themselves on top of the already-dipped surface as you pull it back out. And it's cheap and disposable and doesn't get soggy and limp as fast as paper towels. I've also seen people use hair dryers to blow the paint film aside, but cool as that is, it's not as fast as newspaper. Plus, don't drop that hair dryer in the bucket!
Cool video. Your pedal turned out well. It's sweepy and swirly enough to look good on a fuzz, but it's also got some gnarly, lava-like bubbles coming through to hint that maybe it's not _all_ peace, love and understanding.

Hi there! Great tutorial and thank you for adding your mistakes. Nice to see that cool youtubers are human too.
Is that fuzz factory build video still coming?

Thanks for your feedback. I think it's important to show mistakes so other people can avoid making the same ones.
I didn't end up recording the build for the fuzz factory clone, but I put together a step-by-step guide on how to build one with photos here: guitargearfinder.com/guides/fuzz-factory-clone/

Nice video. Very informative to show your mistakes (thanks).
I would recommend very fine wire/steel wool for roughing up the enclosure. That's what I use when making Eurorack module faceplates. Sandpaper is OTT on aluminium.

Thanks for the tip! Steel wool is a great recommendation.

Has anyone ever tried spraying first into a cup, and then carefully pouring it onto the water from the cup?

Can I use magic marble instead of spray paint?

Magic Marble should work really well and might make it easier to create more intricate swirling patterns. The method should be the same, you just need to carefully drop the paint onto the surface instead of spraying it.

You messed it up, it's covered in bubble marks. You maybe left water droplets on it while it dried -- you can use compressed air to remove them before it fully dries. It would also help to paint the enclosure before drilling.

Those bubble holes are from drops on the outside as it dries? I was assuming it's water under the surface of the paint film, which would keep it from sticking to the underlayer.

A little mistake .....water without Borax:)

    • @ZombieLincoln666

Borax is used when you're using generic enamel paint. They sell paint specifically for marble/swirling which doesn't need borax (or at least they claim)
