I use to perch fish the lake back in the 70's-80's. I fished mainly from the old armory pier (which is gone now) up to Oak St. Beach off the concrete. Olive Park terrace was a hot spot back then. We would catch 100 a day sometimes. We would use a seine in the Des Plains river and catch soft shell crawfish and also pinkies with maggots for bait.
14:50 do people often run out of minnows while perch fishing in a similar manner to how people can run out of worms and wigglers with sunfish? I've never done much perch fishing but it seems like the behavior is much the same as bluegill and green sunfish!: You get a lot of smaller fish and "dinks" and "bait stealers" before you land a decent sized sunfish. Is that accurate? And another difference being minnows are more effective on perch as opposed to worms for bluegill? Would love some insight on this as a newbie.
Also could list some of your best choices of lakes for Shore fisherman in the state of Illinois and Chi town area. ..I'm from California And have had hard time trying to find a good spot in Chicago...
LION OF JUDAH Whalon Lake, Shabbona, Heideke, Braidwood, LaSalle, Lake Michigan, Blackwell, Settlers Park, Mastodon Lake and Waubonsie all have great shore access and good fishing too.
D&S Fishing LOL!!! 😂😂 I know, I finally retired it. It was in the wood handle. But that is the very first, original Shimano Stradic ever made. Before dynabalance! Over 30 years old.
Matt Giblin Thank you so much! Glad to hear you like them. We won’t see too many Perch around in the Fall. The King Salmon come in to Spawn and the Perch scatter. They’ll regroup in the winter in the harbors, with or without the ice covering them. There is free parking on the street by Diversey if you can find a spot, but it is a long walk to the lakeside area. If you’re fishing inside the harbor it’s not a bad walk. There is a pay lot closer to the mouth of the harbor that has a ticket machine and you can pay by the hour. Thanks for watching!
LION OF JUDAH They do. Smallmouth, Brown Trout, and Steelhead eat them. The problem is there are billions upon billions of gobies out there. The bottom is literally lined with them. They reproduce quickly and in high numbers. Theres no way to really get rid of them.
State record smallie was just caught out of Lake Mich. over 7 lbs, thats a nice smallie for IL !!!And it was released ,the guy filled a cooler with water and had it weighed and it's well over 7 . I think they should work at getting a cool water fishery going there ,put some northerns in there and if the hatchery has some extra walleye but they would probably take off for better water.Smallies used to be real small if you caught one but with gravel bars put in they would do a lot better.Perch limit should be put low for a few years to let the perch recover size limits ect. maybe even close a couple years. People keep too many small ones, way too many. Too many salmon are being stocked because they are producing naturally. I saw this at Busse 2 guys had a huge stringer of 3 inch bluegill and a 4 inch bass mixed in .I offered 5 bucks to let it go , they wouldn't and the sign right next to them said 14 inch size limit ,where's a ranger when you need one.Busse used to have big gills , some people sure know how to mess up the fishing!
It is incredibly sad to see over harvest has done to many lakes and rivers but it is horrible to see what has become of the Perch on Lake Michigan. I’ve seen guys take buckets of fingerling size perch. Truthfully I’d love to see them close the perch season for at least 2 years and give them some time to grow! It does take a hit to some of the charter captains who actually do perch trips out there. Sadly, without enough IDNR agents to keep an eye on it, once the season for perch would open again, they’ll be going home in buckets once again, regardless of size or limits. Last I heard, IL has stopped all Pike stockings. Believe it or not, there’s a decent Pike population in and around Diversey Harbor. Walleyes do well up in Green Bay and every once in a while we come across one down this way. I’ve heard reports over the last 15 years or so that walleyes are found around Burnham at night by McCormick Place. I’ve never tried it but one of these years I’ll have to take a trip out and see if it’s true.
@@tonysspotonfishing Yep , I have high hopes for IL ,but it's a mistake to stop stocking northerns , maybe reduce it due to lack of habitat. But I remember muskies in Spring Lake and it took them forever to start stocking them . At that time we didn't have qualified biologists, the muskies have a very poor gene pool altough there are some leech lake strain , but even those might not be right. It's a tough job ,they can't please everyone , but raising the brood in Spring lake , it's really a 100 acre pond ,but it's easy. Then the forage issue.
Jim J Yep and that was even after being cleaned and oiled twice before filming due to that issue. One of many other reasons I left Shimano for Daiwa. The Stradic was the best spinning reel on the market since it’s creation over 30 years ago. Key word there “was”. It’s a shame.
That only applies to power lines or trot lines. NOT conventional rods and reels. If you have more then two lures or two single hooks for live bait on a rod and reel, you will be ticketed and could lose your fishing gear and license privileges. The 50 hooks on Lake Michigan are for power line fishing only.
@@tonysspotonfishing idk i tried looking in the regulations i can't find it cause in 1 part says 2 poles another 3 lines unless noted it used to be unlimited but my bad if it isnt
Unfortunately that is not correct. It would make Perch Fishing so much easier though. In the state of Illinois you can only run 2 rods at a time with up to two baits/hooks per rod. The only exception is power line rigs and trot lines.
Spot on Fishing idnr told me that's the law.. Two poles per Angler with no names on it but if I wanted to fish with more poles I would have to put my name and address on all of them. I would never fish that many but at cat tournaments I would fish with 6 poles out with my name and address on them.
Spot on Fishing, just looked it up. Up to 50 poles only at places that don't state the limit t of 2.. So rivers you can fish with pretty much with as many poles as you want just make sure to put name and address. Makes sense now because I was fishing the tourney on the Illinois River and that's where the idnr confirmed the 50 poles.
Fisherdanpro23 Wow! That is pretty wild that an agent would say that. All I can say is in working along side and with the ILDNR through various projects over the last 22 years I’ve never heard that. I would proceed with caution, but like you said you’d never do that anyway. I sent off an email to one of the agents we’ve worked along side over the years. Now I’m pretty curious if this could be an “unwritten” law. I’ll let ya know when I hear back.
Erik B Yes, you are right. It is a shame how the population of jumbos have declined. It will take a lot of work and a ton of money to correct it...I just don't know if it will happen. I hope it does.
Tony, what a great channel you got here. I love your videos, they are very informative. Teaching me a lot for sure.
thanks Pete! please share our videos to help spread our educational.

Gerber Baby Good times, no doubt. Thank you for watching and thanks for the comment. We truly appreciate it!
You’ll be lucky if you can go get a perch out of it there in 2022

What about using golbies on a slip bobber ? Or using golbies on a Lindy Rig?
Is it illegal to possess them and fish with them?
yes alive its illegal
Keep up the good work in joyed the show, Lake Michigan tuff now days ,I wonder could they stock or introduce a sport fish to eat all the gobies ..

Now with the alewives going the way of the dodo it’s kind of. A good thing without it probably would be worse the real problem is the zebra muscles

7:06 you sounded like bubbles from trailer park boys
Those are a lot smaller than the ones I catch in Lake Erie all the time
Donald Gorniak Oh yeah, it’s getting bad here on Lake Michigan. Thanks for watching! We appreciate it!

Read u rules and regulations on lake Michigan u can have up to 50 as long as u have your name on them after 2

because i remember when i was there only 2-3 years ago at montrose killing 10-13 inch fish..
Erik B Yep I remember those days as well. It is a shame. Over harvest and lack of stocking has caused this in Lake Michigan.
2 rods?? 50 hooks is the state regs..
