Golf Wrist Release Drill for More Clubhead Speed

  • Here's a popular wrists release drill to help you get more clubhead speed. This one is sometimes called the L to L drill. I have a couple other tips posted that also explain it too. So what makes this tip different? Well, it shows you a close up of my wrists both left and right hands as I do the drill so you can follow along and learn how to release the golf club.
    Free samples from my Body Swing book and video series here: bodyswing.com/freesamples/
    The release in your swing is responsible to generating clubhead speed. Too many people are just trying to hit the ball with the arms. The problem is, this tightens your wrists. The tighter your wrists the slower the club swings.
    So you need to understand the club head speed is not coming from hitting hard with the hands and arms. It is coming from the looseness of the wrist. This doesn't mean you are so loose that you are letting go of the club though. You need a secure grip and loose wrists. If so, you will get the club releasing.
    Grab a club and follow along with this tip so you will know if you're doing it right. Once you learn it, you need to do this drill nightly around the house. Try to do 25 repetitions minimum. Over time, you will have done it thousands of times and finally loosen up your wrists give you more clubhead speed than ever.
    Please visit the link below and I will send you free samples from my Body Swing book and video series: bodyswing.com/freesamples/

    Hello Paul I have been watching your body swing lessons for the last 3 years now, my golf game has improved a lot, shooting many times below 90. Thank you so much. I am 78 years old now and wish I've known your video lessons during my early days playing golf.

    This is a very underrated drill and video. Too many instructors simply *say* things like “don’t cast the club,” or “let the toe turn over,” but they flat out fail to understand that 99% of people have no idea what that means, causing them to drag the club through impact with the face wide open. No one bothers to actually *show* what it means to turn your hands over and how it’s really done. Very pleased to see this, and I can’t wait to share.

    • @paulwilsongolf

      Thanks so much. This is a huge piece of the swing. This is where you get the power. Too many people seem to think everything is flipping. I guess they can't cure flipping so they avoid stuff like this. Get this and your whole game will change.

      @@paulwilsongolf So true Paul. I play with guys who aren't that athletic or strong, but they really have a nice release like you have and they are really consistent with their irons. Even with shorter swing due to age and lack of flexibility they really generate a lot of hand speed. A lot of them still play 6500 or so....

    I’ve been playing golf for over a year.. watched hundreds of videos and I am so glad I have found your channel. You are the only one who is talking about the wrist hinge. I had no idea and was trying too hard to manipulate the club face at impact causing my path to be in to out. Thank you so much for sharing this drill!

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 місяці тому

      Glad you found me. The hinge is vital. Too many people (when learning as an adult) want to just smash the ball as hard as possible. This tightens the hinge losing power and consistency. Just keep watching my tips and you will build a great swing in no time.

    Hi Paul, I'm a middle aged guy in Australia. You have completely changed my golf swing. For about 40 years I've had the same swing, trying too hard, struggling with distance etc. Once I allowed myself to 'let it go' and really trust the loosening of my wrists in the swing, I reckon I'm hitting my irons around 30 or 40 yards longer, and the crisp feeling I've now got, and as you described, for the first time ever I'm taking divots...wow, seriously you've changed the entire way I think about my swing. I love how I can now flick my wrists through at impact! Thanks again and all the best. I've watched lots of stuff on UA-cam about improving swings etc but you really seem to have nailed it with the free and easy wrist movement. Russ

      Isn't it amazing? I used to play a 11 wood because I hit my 6 iron like 160 yards. It was pathetic for my age and size, etc... With Paul's videos/training I can smack greens around 195 or so out with my 6 now and I don't have to carry that embarrassing 11 wood anymore.

    I watched this video the other day as releasing club has been a big issue for me. Both Club pros say my back swing is almost perfect, my grip is great, and my practice swings look pro, however when I go to hit i just don't release and try to power the ball. Last 2 or 3 days I started really working on this and including it in my workouts. Went and hit driver today and I went from a 90mph Club head speed to 100mph. I also added 10 mph to ball speed up to over 140 and have a beautiful draw. This was based on indoor trackman simulator so those numbers are real. IT is a work in progress but even the club pros were amazed.. My best most powerful swing was upwards of 105 mph with almost 150 mph ball speed but it over drew a little which would have been playable but was a hook. That is the miss now. People over look the release too much. Especially stronger muscular guys like me who think slap shot instead of tennis racket. Thanks again. Going to keep working on it.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 роки тому

      Glad you found me and started to loosen up. As you can see this is a huge key for power. Something that is looser swing faster than something that is tight. Be careful. If you have a strong grip with loose wrists you will hook it. So be sure to be neutral. Keep the looseness then do this too:
      ua-cam.com/video/x1NehGi8tyI/v-deo.html
      Oh yeah, see how little effort it takes me to get to 100mph:
      ua-cam.com/video/O9jr3G1FF6M/v-deo.html
      If I can do that you most certainly can too. My wrists are super loose though.

Loose wrists is vital. If you don't have lag your wrists are most certainly too tight. Hinge and rehinge with a secure grip. Do this constantly.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому +1

      You need your body to tell your arms how fast to swing. Your body moves slow in life so it is pretty simple to repeat the same tempo. You base it on hitting you are dealing with larger numbers to it is hard to have the exact same tempo. Mental - you need to change how you think. You are not hitting anything. If you lose it immediate go back down to 50% and build it up again to a level you can handle. I am not thinking of hitting anything. I allow the body too tell the arms where to swing. So you need to start thinking like this. Once you hit the top in no way do you hit or help the shot with your arms. Way easier to move your body the same way each time.

I believe I need to align better, but I'm not sure. And I most normally do it with my irons. Actually very hard work trying to take the arms out of the swing. • @paulwilsongolf

      Yes, absolutely. Unless you are 30 or younger and learned golf as a kid you will never get a body release golf swing. I am literally working right with 2 guys who tried it. Both hit driver 220 and other clubs nowhere. Plus, too much tilt will kill your back. I tried it. So I see the wrists as a hinge. It hinges and rehinges. A hinge in loose. This is what gives you clubhead speed. Then you attached this arm unit to your body which is coiling and uncoiling. Get that and you have a swing for life.

    I saw your video on keeping the clubbed square and totally agreed. I totally disagree with this idea of hinging and rehinging. It is impossible to properly time such a thing and any activity in the hands and wrists through impact is hopeless and goes against using the lower body to generate power and club head speed.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому

      Well, you don't know how I do it. It is not impossible at all. You need to do that drill until you consistently hook every shot. Now you know where it's going to go before you hit it. Then you keep doing it but slowly start to add more and more body watching your ball. Little body less hook so you add a little more etc until you are hitting it dead straight. Too much body you blow it right so you back it off. I could literally get you hitting it dead straight in 10mins. Watch this sales video. You don't have to buy it but watch my result. That is not even working on their swings. I just told them 2 things: howtocureaslice.com I don't guess. I have done this for so long I can make anyone hit it dead straight very quickly.

    Old school forearm rotation which causes excessive Face Rotation and loss of face control. Much preferred to use Body Rotation to stabilize the Face with a modern Body-bias rotation and face stabilization for more consistency.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Місяць тому

      Well, you don't actually lose face control if you are not trying to hit the ball with your arms. You are using simple physics to square the face very consistently. If you want to do the new swing feel free. The problem is when you get older and you can't turn your hips or you started as an adult and have zero hip rotation. This swing will not work for those people. The person who started playing golf as an adult is hitting solely with the arms. 80 to 90% are facing the ball as they hit the ball. If their hips are open 10 degrees at impact it's a miracle. So again, this new swing will never work for them. I went them getting power with looseness not physical strength. Not that I don't have great players doing my stuff but most of my followers are older and did not learn as kids. My best student at the moment is a +7 and is very consistent.

    Paul, I recently had a lesson (I'm changing my swing in response to a shoulder dislocation) and the instructor told me that I'm not releasing my hands correctly. I'm releasing my hands exactly how you are in this video but I was told that this movement is incorrect - the instructor wanted my hands (my trail hand in particular) to rehinge at the end of the swing in order to "release my hands" properly. Is this rehinging of the trail hand at the end of the swing necessary? I'm only posing the question to you on your channel because others in the online space have not touched on this detail (of how to actually release the wrist - others may be interested in this nitpicky detail), thanks in advance and I appreciate your videos.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  2 роки тому

      Not sure what you mean release your trail hand at the end of the swing? In the follow through? Why bother? For me, I don't see your hands as hands and wrists as wrists. I see them as a hinge. So how would a hinge work? It would hinge ... it would rehinge. The hinge would be loose. So if you are not doing what I want you to do then you would be too tight. Keep in mind that tips was a drill. This would get you hinging and rehinging too early (which is a good thing).
      Watch: ua-cam.com/video/jEWe9Gaoqxo/v-deo.html
      Then keep doing what you are doing. Get the hinge working. How do you know it's working? You rarely hit shots with slice spin. At this point you would keep the same feeling in your hands and arms as you start making the switch to powering your swing with your body. Wrists = spin. body = direction.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Рік тому

      Well the release is a huge part of the swing. This is where you are going to get a ton of power and stop putting slice spin on your shots. Holding off is not great. Takes way more energy for less result. If this was a flip you would be adding loft. This is closing the face (on purpose). Doing this early or too much would put hook spin on it. This is not the whole swing. This is a piece of the swing. Need to know how I teach the swing and how fast I can get people hitting it dead straight. 2 steps. That's it. I've had had people roll it over about 100 time then add body even with wedges and it lowers them. For Driver take it in 2 steps. Roll it from the top and get it hooking. Then we know what you are going to do before you do it. This is half right (Spin). Once you are confident that everything is going left left then start switching to body to straighten it out (direction). This is how simple it is. You keep rolling and hitting the hooks until every ball hooks consistently. The you switch to body rotation to straighten it out. Watch your ball it will tell you exactly what to do. Push it and you are driving the lower too hard. You need to to fire the lower until it goes straight then memorize that feeling so you can repeat it into the future.

I literally have thousands and testimonials and have taught tens of thousands of people over 30 years. No one gets tendonitis from loosening their wrists.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому

      I say you are not hitting or helping the club in any way with your arms. They are powerless. Your wrists are a hinge. They hinge and rehinge. Unless you are playing and practicing daily holding the clubface square down the the line will never work. If the face is only open or closed a few degrees you will hit it sideways. A tick on a clock is 6 degrees. You don't even have a tick on a clock so using hand eye coordination and practicing once a week how do you ever plan on being consistent? This is a reason the average person will get it then lose it then get it then lose it and eventually drive themselves crazy. I prefer using physics of mass swinging around an axis and not disturbing the mass. Here is the explanation. Listen carefully to what I am saying in this tip:

      Loose wrists. All clubs. Quit trying to keep it flat. It hinges and rehinges. A hinge is loose. Think differently and you will get it. Slice spin it was tight. Hook you rehinged it too early. Get this then add body rotation.

      The fat shots are a result of loosening up your wrists, all you have to do now is start to turn your body slightly. Start off slowly and then build up more speed with your legs and hips.

    This presents a conundrum that I've been facing for a few years now. Just about every teacher I've seen promotes a "hold-off" release in combination with a "flat" left wrist at the top that supposedly promotes a more consistent way to keep the clubface square through impact with less "timing". However, having tried to implement this hold-off method over the past few years, I've had very little success with it. Firstly, it feels terrible. I find the "rolling" of the wrists to be far more comfortable and intuitive, and trying to keep my left wrist flat at the top and on the way down causes pain. Maybe be I'm crazy, but I feel like I hit the ball just as consistently when I let my wrists loose as I do when I try to "control" them. They say it's an outmoded method of swinging the club, but to me it just feels better.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, how's that working out for everyone? The wrists are a hinge. Why would you lock it? If it's a hinge it needs to hinge and rehinge because it's loose. This one will explain it too: ua-cam.com/video/OFJOLBSXSfQ/v-deo.html

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  Рік тому

      Quit seeing the bad in it. The hook is half right. Your wrists are working and you are releasing it. See how this is a good thing versus slicing it? Now you need to get it on the right direction. This is a body problem. If you don't see this you will try to manipulate the face and end up blowing it right. Wrists = spin. Body = direction. keep doing what you are doing with the wrists. Then as soon as you start down you are firing your lower body first. If your body moves first coming down you will hit it dead straight. Try this as the trigger: ua-cam.com/video/RdphthCQ9VM/v-deo.html
      So fire the lower first then allow the wrist to release as you are doing. Watch this too:

      It is active if you are slicing the ball and learning how to do it. Once you hit every ball straight or hooked they are passive as you are moving on to your body to straighten it out.

    • @paulwilsongolf

      Yes, the release is happening at the golf ball but you are trying to start a lot earlier to unlock your wrists. If they are tight, which most golfers are, then you need to do this a lot sooner.

Because of this I keep making my grip stronger and stronger but still loose my shots to the right. So I’m assuming it doesn’t matter how strong the grip is , if your locked at impact your going to still miss right.

    I have been a flipper of the golf club my whole life. I went to this type of release a few years back to get rid of my fade. Then I started having timing issues, and my ball direction really suffered. Unpredictable hooks, blocks and slices. What you have to be careful of with this release is you don't do it TOO much. The club face should stay square to the arch of the swing. Don't overly rotate the face, or hold it straight down the line of the shot. Somewhere in between.

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому

      You weren't consistent because you didn't know what to look for. Once you get the release you base your swing on your body which is exactly what I teach. Your wrists can only be so loose. Once you get that you are not even thinking about it. Pull = more body push = less body. Watch the ball. It will tell you what to do.

    How the hell would u time the square face at impact?

    • @paulwilsongolf
      @paulwilsongolf  3 роки тому +1

      What you are not seeing is simple physics of mass swinging around an axis. Set up with the face square and arms stretched out at setup. How do you consistently square the face? You let the arms stretch back out. You pre determined that when your arms are stretched out the face is square. So if you stretch your arms out the face has to be square. This is why a chicken wing is so inconsistent as well as trying to hold the lag angle through and past impact. Watch these 2 tips. It explains it:

    • @paulwilsongolf

      You turn your body. No body turn = square shoulders at impact = flipping. So turn. Get the hips and shoulders open and impact and you have no flip. This is a piece of the swing showing how the wrist work. This is then connected to your body rotation.
