Great lesson, thank you. Another mental picture I heard used for the rolling down of the lead hand to close the club face was to imagine you had a wide paint brush in you hands instead of the golf club and as you are coming down into the impact zone, you are trying to paint a nice broad stroke on the ground through through impact zone. To do that and apply appropriate pressure, you need to adjust hands/wrists in the way Ali recommends.

I'm a 20 handicap working hard to improve and based on what i have narrowed the critical areas down to ....this video instruction makes total sense...delay the clubhead on downswing.....motorbike twist to get clubface more closed and whip it through !! one of the most useful videos ive seen thanks

I watched this video over coffee before heading to the local course. I went to the range and implemented this action into my swing. What a difference. I gained some distance but what surprised me the most was the consistency of strike. I was truly amazed. I am a 9.2 handicap and usually play from the white tees at my local course. Today I played the back 9 from the blue tees and shot 4 over in a very strong Texas wind. With these condition I normally would have shot mid 40’s. It was brutal but manageable with the consistent strike and ball flight.
    Thank you Ali.

    When a problem comes along
    You must whip it
Before the cream sits out too long
    You must whip it
    When something's going wrong
    You must whip it
    Now whip it
    Into shape
    Shape it up
    Get straight
    Go forward
    Move ahead
    Try to detect it
    It's not too late
    To whip it
    Whip it good
When a good time turns around
    You must whip it
You will never live it down
    Unless you whip it
    No one gets away
    Until they whip it
    I say whip it
    Whip it good
    Great video! We need more!

This helped me Immensely! I didn't have to change my backswing or hands at all, but for my downswing, getting my hips rotated before releasing my hands and right elbow, it worked great! All the way through the bag! I've been playing around with ball positions but finally had that settled. Now instead of 165-175yds with my 7i, I'm getting up to 190! It also helped with thinning it! The 1st couple swings you may fat it but once you get it, it sounds WAY better off the face! I play PXG 0211 irons and I out hit my buddies Taylor Mades! If you haven't tried PXG, I couldn't recommend them enough!!! Thanks AT!!!!

Rythm of motion is key to ”hold the club” from releasing early. With the weight and momentum of the shaft and club head is so ”heavy”, that it is basically not holdable, when swinging fast. Lot of people looks to have ”holding” in their pre-shot routine and the release doesn’t happen, if you intention is to hold the club head from releasing as late as possible.
Consentrating in the rythm, rather than holding the lag as late as possible. The swoosh-drill is good for experimenting, when to fire and gain that acceleration late.

I learned this through trial and error. A club pro once told me to take 15-20 swings before teeing off if you can't get a real warm up in. I took to doing that and a long the way learned how to gain distance without swinging harder by cracking the whip better.

Brilliant video, Ali, thank you. I was playing about at the range yesterday, trying ball position. So the 7 Iron was my center or 6 o clock point, 6 iron 1 inch in front of center and 5 iron 2 inches in front of center. I had the steeper club 1 or 2 inches behind. I was trying to winkle extra distance out as I am not a big hitter at my age now. I have just tried this exercise out in the garden just now, with softer hands from 3 o clock in the swing to the release point at the bottom of the swing, 6 o clock, and it works so thank you. I will have a go at the range next week.

I am enjoying my Cobra F Max irons that I was fitted for. The fitter showed be something wonderful for distance related to ball compression and lag. Only I hadn't been able to recreate it till I saw this. He got my distance up 20 yards per club. I know we all lose a club and a half distance at this time of year. Thank you.

A lot of people try to hood the face to counter their slice which actually makes it even harder for them even though they'll hit the occasional straight one. I find getting them to have a slightly open face (to target) at address and swinging from in to outside the line of the clubface and getting used to squaring the club through a better path really helps them, which also promotes a better release.

Great video, particularly for what I need. There are 2-3 main points here, release of the club late or forward, club face, and wrist angle. It may help to enumerate them so they don’t get lost.. I agree in part, with Chester’s comment, there is a lot of discussion. I always get a bit lost if there are too many comments and demonstrations about what not to do; reduce that, and emphasize the positive. Thanks for a great video. I can practice this at home and at the range.

I am so glad you mentioned the Cobra 7 iron your using is the same loft as your 5 iron. I have 2002 Ping i 3s my 8 iron is about the same as now a days pitching wedges. I love my clubs and see no reason to change, I have continued to upgrade my driver. I just had my hip replaced so I won't be hitting full shots for four months. I was a 7 and it was a solid 7 that felt proper to . Mostly the angle of my club face was the same as yours in the take away and back down in line with my back. My shot is a draw but I can hang on just a smidge more and hit it straight. I want to thank you for this video as it validates the things I was doing. With my back and hip are hurt and I lost significant distance. I went and saw my pro and he had me doing this because I was no longer releasing the club trying to protect my injuries. As soon as I got back to letting it go I asked Dale the sound seems to becoming equal to or after the ball and he said perfect. I have subscribed to your channel so I will be looking for this as a refresher. This was great to see I just wish I could go to the range tomorrow. I live in Victoria on Vancouver Island the most South western point in Canada the temperature high today was 6 degrees the warmest spot in the country. Your weather is similar in England and once you start walking it's warm enough. The next time I am in Britain I will get some lessons from you probably this spring. Cheers. Chris

Great demonstration.. I can only get this to work tucking in that right elbow, left wrist almost in strain to keep the club face square too find that way a effortless whip then.
Using my R10 at the club practice area you can see recorded shots from behind, club shallowing out too at impact "woosh zone.."( bye bye over the top!)
    Readings have been good 9 iron 140 flight -160 yards carry. 8 iron 160- flight-180 yards, 7 iron 160 flight-190 carry.
Couldn't believe it when I finally cracked it, and with the compression squat too.. Ultimate Goal is 200+ with my 5 iron, a long iron struck pure👍
Ability to go failure to failure without losing enthusiasm !

Great video - I still have to comment on some of these modern strong lofted irons - how strong is too strong? What is the loft of the PW in that set? And then, what does it do - requires you possibly to have to add another more traditionally lofted wedge into your bag? - Or is that the whole idea? You could actually have a 6 or 7 iron as your first iron in the bag and then have a wider array of specialty wedges?

Nice video. The whip! Crack it a foot or more ahead of the ball. Like most struggling golfers, I could crack that whip and get great club-head speed, but I was sacrificing accuracy. Drove me crazy. Then I figured out why. Any kind of manipulation of the wrists during the swing is going to make your shot inconsistent (unless you're a PGA pro and practice hours every day). You're just not going to manipulate the club exactly the same way every time, especially when you're on the 15th hole and getting tired. There's another way to square the club with no wrist manipulation. Learn to hit with a stronger grip. You can keep your left wrist absolutely flat from the top of your backswing through the ball. It's much more powerful having your wrist and forearm in a straight line hitting through the ball. You get free shaft lean without manipulation. Watch slow-motion iron swings for golfers like Cory McIlroy. Get a down-the-line view (irons, not driver). When they get to the top of their backswings, stop the video. Compare the angle of the bottom of their clubface with their left wrist angle. For many of them, the angle is not the same. They have closed clubfaces (stronger grips). Anyway, it's made all the difference for me. Hope it helps.

So where I get confused from different instructors is the wrist action. Is the wrist release active or passive? This looks to be very active, whereas some instructors make it sound like the wrists are simply a loose hinge that are released by the inertia of the club, rather than through muscular engagement.

  • @fairwayfreunde
    @fairwayfreunde 2 роки тому +1

What all you pros dont get is that we amateurs have to guide or steer the club head to the ball. Our setup is just not solid enough to release the clubhead that late. We COULD release it later but that comes often with bad impact and an open face. I know a few Mid Handicappers with a lag like a tour pro but they hit it all over the place.

He’s saying that holding the lag is correct you just need to bow your wrists to square the face. This is 100% wrong. Notice his “good” shot with a 7 iron os only 160 yards carry. That is not good. LAG IS AN ILLUSION THAT IS CREATED WHEN YOU SWING THE CLUB CORRECTLY. LAG IS NOT SOMETHING YOU DO, IT JUST HAPPENS WHEN YOU SWING THE CLUB CORRECTLY.

I was amazed at the distance I gained when the pressure was almost non-existent. And...I got the swoosh later one. And, the clubface closed naturally! My own opinion is all these tips are good but the results can be destroyed by your right hand.

Look at the ball striking robots. Their actual swing motion isn't really that fast. What is fast is the pendulum motion the put onto the club. That same motion, the "whip", is what professionals can do so well and makes their swings look so effortless.

Go ahead and hold the angle and, IMO, you’ll never be good. I’ve yet to learn how you can hold off the release without dragging the handle. To do one is to do the other. The proper release begins right at the top. (See, among others, all the Steve Pratt videos, and Mike Malaska, too.) And if you’re a handle-dragger, you’ll never be really good.

This is a frustrating video because he’s telling us to do this and do that with the back of the hand, elbow blah blah blah, but doesn’t give a drill to help me incorporate the late release into my swing. Aimee Cho said the trick is to clear the hips first but at 68 that’s easier said than done.

To help, at top of backswing feel as if your trail elbow gets pulled straight down towards the ground, like pulling a train horn, this will whip the club around your body, closer to your body too your trail arm is tighter and so swing speed is up and more in to out swing path, just by your trail arm movement in downswing

This bowing down the wrist thingy is not for me, other youtubers like Shawn Clement promote a stronger grip to have the same result.

    • @milo5395

If you cup your wrist it is the killer move, move of death. Get used to bowing slightly but keeping it just straight instead if it’s easier

    • @markk171
      @markk171 2 роки тому +1

yep the bowing the wrist thing is WAY to much minutia...strong grip, don't roll your hands over at take away (as Ali describes) and you your wrists don't "cup". So no need to intentionally bow your wrist. I know this cause I take videos of my golf swing. If I "roll" my hands at take away (do this when I get lazy), I cup my wrists...if I do like Ali suggests and keep the face square at take away, my wrist "bows" all by themselves without manufacturing this "bow".

Amateurs don't use their bodies to swing, they use their arms. Talk about turning thru impact. When you introduce "release" to amateurs they then use hands and arms even more.

I was recently explaining my release to some friends and i described it as a deceleration of my hands just before the ball with the driver. For me the feel is the cracking of the whip with the left hand with the trail arm helping.

Probably one of the stupidest, and most misleading, videos for the average golfer. There is NO WAY ordinary golfers can 'whip the clubhead through' and expect to play well...Even Pros ( like McIlroy, Fowler, Garcia and D Johnson), even with their talent, have performance troughs where their 'flick it' ability leaves them.
Please don't try it...you might hit further, but you'll have real trouble with consistency !
