- In Egypt, a new administrative capital is being built in the middle of the desert, about 28 miles away from Cairo. You might think that the Egyptian government embarked on this ambitious multi-billion dollar project for some compelling needs: to lighten the load on the real estate market in the old capital, to reduce pollution and traffic congestion. EDIT: unfortunately, contemporary Egyptians have been rendered so helpless that a lot of them try to find whatever good there is in their situation, even if it will lead to their demise ... toxic positivity & false reassurance. There is so little for the modern Egyptian to be proud of, and the media has exploited this by claiming the tallest tower, the grandest mosque, or the largest cathedral to gain the population's support.

Egypt is not only working on the new capital city but its building 44 new cities all under constriction. 2nd thing i wanna point out that Cairo was not left out, cairo got new metro lines,brt and slums are beigns domolished and residents are given new houses.

I don‘t know if people still live there (I kinda doubt it) but the pictures from that place are hilarious with like 5 levels of appartements straight up bellow the highway with no light.

But if you read every thing the government posted you will know it is cheaper because you will only have to pay 500 pounds every month for 30 years then it will be a private property

@@ktdoty9921 Same way the average citizen in the UK cant buy property in London, or Paris, or Berlin, or Moscow, or Amsterdam etc etc etc. Of course the capital of a country will be expensive, but the social housing provided by the government will mean that average-just above average can afford property in this incredible 4th generation city

@@ktdoty9921 You are thinking of British/Sterling pounds. 3000 US Dollars is ~ 50,000 Egyptian Pounds. That means the average Egyptian is getting 4000 pounds a month. If that is true, then 500 pounds for a mortgage is not a big deal. The USA for comparison has an average annual income of 31,000 US Dollars, roughly 2500 US Dollars a month, and an average monthly mortgage of 1,200 US Dollars.

I live in Cairo, specifically Madinet Nasr (Nasr City). I have been to old cairo and visited areas like fustat and el sayeda eisha and el hussein, hell, I have been to the very heart of the supposedly removed slums, Manshiyet Naser (the so called garbage city). Yet the government only works on removing areas that don't need to be removed, only renovated, like the sixth and seventh districts of Madinet Nasr

We as egyptians are surprised by the speed of achievements of such projects , me personally living at delta region have witnessed bridges and roads being constructed and finished from A to Z within 4 months , this made my life much easier we were not used to see such projects constructed in such few time before, still there is alot to be done but am sure now than ever we are on right path

Can you make a video about "Decent Life Initiative"?
It is a 45 billion dollars project that is aimed at providing and improving services and infrastructure for all the the 68 million egyptians living in villages. It is supposed to be over by 2024-2025....
Money is already being spent on eradicating slums and improving the infrastructure of Cairo. Also, the government is investing heavily in public transportation, new metro lines, LRT, BRT and a Monorail.
You seem to be very proud of the development but be careful of the Chinese money which is being invested. For example - Sri Lanka, China now literally owns that country and Kampala airport of Uganda which now has 100% ownership.
@@JonSnow-pi6jb I’m just mentioning some of the things that many Egyptians really need as a development. However, i’m not that proud of the development that is going on, there are some things missing the government needs to pay attention too. Chinese loans to the Egyptian government is really considered insignificant, number and percentage of total GDP wise, compared to loans given to Sri lanka, Uganda, Pakistan and other African countries.

Before the Kampala airport fake news, it was the Mombasa port and before that ZESCO, the Zambian Electricity Company. All that was just fake news. The US Spends each year 300 millions $ to smear the Belt and Road Initiative. You now have an idea where this money is going.

Actually 50,000 dollars for an appartment (786,870 egp) is actually close to average than it is to the extreme prices here in egypt speaking Alexandria wise most appartments exceed 1mil egp with ease in popular areas and getting a 2 bedroom appartment in a hotspot like the new capital for 780k is a very good price if you ask me

You showed some videos of the slums in egypt now all those slums are demolished and new homes are built to these poor people and that is also a mega project in egypt
I'm critical of this project seeming that many of the Urban planning mistakes Dubai made are been replicated like the lack of transit and no friendly pedestrian streets. However, with Egypt's rich history on arquitecture and new capitals, it tell us if anyone can build new capitals is then, I just hope it doesn't become like the story of Pharoah Akhenatens capital.

Yeah it seems to just just be for the government, the military and the rich. The park may seem nice, but we’re talking about a park that primarily exists to be big, is placed in a desert and is in a country with high water insecurity

i don’t like how this videos leaves out so many key details that makes it seem like the gov is moving away from people out of fear of being removed. if anything it’s only moving to allow people to have a breathe of fresh air as congestion eases as the offices moves away allowing more open spaces and green areas available for the residents.
I think your analysis is likely to be just as one-sided as you suggest the video is.
There are valid reasons to be distrustful if the Egyptian government"s motives. The willingness of people in the Middle East to trust their autocratic governments has been one of the major contributing factors to economic and social stagnation in the region - which, in turn, led to the Arab Spring and Islamism. How much more of the same pattern of bad governments promising big things only to disappoint are you willing to take?
@@ems7623 no it isn’t. obv i am aware that having an opinion and rooting for it is a form of bias, but as i grew up and understood more and more about politics i started off with giving the ruling authority the benefit of the doubt and supporting them until i found reason not to. with mubarak’s time, i was with his removal. then came morsi, whom me and my entire family were convinced of and voted for, but quickly within one year we saw his clear ineptitude and wanted him out immediately and can’t stand the guy now. with the current government we’re seeing real words and promises that actually come to fruition with real life actions. you know, things that would be promised and may or may not be completed in 15 years are now being announced to be completed before we even had the chance to know they were planned and all-in-all take a year or two instead of the 15.
i know it’s hard to believe as a foreigner (i assume) to see the middle east as a country where peoples will is what is actually being done, but we chose him and with regards to this, we actually see the problem and have asking for this solution for ages. downtown cairo is literally impossible to go thru it’s incredibly jammed and is long overdue a relief from 10s of years

I do undestand the motives behind the move, it's easy to build something new than to correct something that is falling apart, but the egypitians will pay a heavy price (hyperinflation) for such faraonic project for the ultrawealth and powerful payed with taxes.
From what I've heard and read it's not only building new city, they are upgrading Cairo too by demolitioning some slums that sprout out of control in the arab's spring and compensate the families with money or new housing.

I am not kidding every couple of hundred meters you walk in Egyptian cities new stuff are being being built or old stuff are being upgraded. Old cairo is getting 6 new major axis roads, one new ring road and old ring road is being upgraded 8 lanes, EV buses, new metro line, two new monorail lines, lrt train line, a new bullet train, new parks, new lakes, new museums , sky scrapers, dozens of new hospitals, hundreds of new schools, entire slums demolished and rebuild to standard for free for their occupants. $50 billion usd are being spent in under 3 years to upgrade the Egyptian countryside. $60 billion are being spent annually on mega projects all over egypt for the past 8 years to improve Egyptian lives ranging from electricity to water treatment to sewage to communications to transport to road networks to rail systems to cultivating 4 million acres in the desert to modern irrigation to education to health care to defense. Work didn’t stop while Egypt was fighting isis on it’s western and eastern borders and it also didn’t stop during covid. Western media show only a tiny fraction of how Egypt is rising

It’s due to the U.S printing 8 trn usd in 24 months that increased its debt to gdp ratio to over 120% hence hiking interest rates on U.S bond. Couple that with the current world economic war which made them hike interest even more. This caused a decrease of demand over most currencies in the world and decreased their exchange rate values while putting pressure over prices of grains, energy and metals.
I would agree with you if Egyptian debt to gdp was increasing but it is decreasing steadily, currently a tad lower than the global average of 94%. It’s at 87% of gdp and will drop to 80% in the next 3 years. Indeed post Covid it was expected to drop to less than 70% but again it’s not a domestic reason related to inflation.
In addition 87% of gdp is not as much as you think of the Egyptian gdp considering 2 things.
1- debt maturity is over 11 years meaning on average it’s 8% of gdp on annual basis.
2- Egyptian gdp is around 10% of Egyptians wealth not like a country as the U.S where the GDP is 25% of the wealth. Meaning that general gross in Egypt makes 0.8% of the wealth on an annual basis and 8% in total.
So anyone who talks about defaulting etc…. Have no clue about what they are talking about.

Another reveloution and there will be no more Egypt as we know it this move is smart and sisi already is doing the "Hyah karima" mega project to improve the lives of over 60 million egyptians and is still ongoing and already improved alot of villiages. I find this move pretty smart of sisi as our understanding of politics can be manipulated so easily due to lack of education to most. Education has seen development but it isnt enough as the smart ones go outside and work outside in like germany so they never do good for the country so if there is more jobs and a more developed part rgen it we can convince them to stay and benefit the country.
Hopefully it doesn't turn out like Brazilia, which is often called "culture-less" and boring compared to Rio, while Pakistan with Islamabad, did well, creating many parks and recreational facilites.

Timing is great for such a large infrastructure investment it will soften the blow of post pandemic economics
I've spent three beautiful months in Egypt with wonderful people here. While my stay, I largely wandered in cities like Nubareyah, Alexandria etc. I express my heartiest wishes to the new project & kindly request the concerned authorities to give priority for basic infrastructure like roads.... The roads should be adequately wide with proper footpath & a special cycling track too. The drainage lids should neither on roads nor on footpath, but completely away from both! (Indian cities having the same defect everywhere! Almost all roads directly carrying the deadliest drainage lids/ covers everywhere).
Also note that BRT/rapid bus transit system is a big failure in all cities across the world... Try find some sustainable solution.. Give priority to greenery, gardens & dedicated areas for elderly citizens.

The Government is focusing on developping poor neighborhoods with bad infrastructure and civil planning, they are upgrading gettos to more liveable places and providing low income families with better housing.
Egypt plans to diminish gettos and poor neighborhoods by 2030.
Are the owners of those buildings and apartments getting fairly compensated though? You have to take that in consideration.

The people in comment sections are clueless. I know people who were JUST in Egypt weeks ago. They say sure some bits are improving but the people are struggling to live even on basic needs. Cairo is not left... Huge efforts are undertaken to remove slums and rebuild them again in a modern fashion... New roads are constructed in old Cairo... New metro lines...
Also there is a new huge project that has already started to modernize rural Egypt.. Involving thousands of villages... To improve life among ordinary and non rich people.. New roads.. Health services.. Fast internet.. Housing... Fresh water ... Sewage.. Etc

Unfortunately, Egypt is bankrupt. Egypt borrows money to be able to pay the interest on the enormous debts. Even worse, all investments go to projects that do not generate income. One has the feeling that Egypt is mismanaged on purpose. The people who claim the opposite either have no idea about economics or profit from corruption themselves.

I can get behind an Egypt that positions itself as a regional leader. No one would disagree that the entire Arab world needs better leadership for a more secure and sane future.
I worry, however, that the entire region includibg Egypt does not seem capable of imagining forms of constitutional governance which eschew authoritarianism. I simply do not think that any authoritarian society can ever truly prosper. China is presently an outlier in this, but often overlooked is what it actually feels like to live in a society that lacks basic freedoms. Many will live a lifestyle plentiful enough to not notice on most days, but the voices of those who don't are smothered.
again everyone in the west seems to think that the model for democracy that’s displayed there is the be all end all of it and should be law everywhere else. however they don’t factor that people in the west are much more educated and aware of what true democracy means people in this side of the world think democracy means doing whatever u want however u want at any time no matter who it offends harms or bothers. they’re not ready for democracy yet AT ALL. they need to be guided and have their hands held till they improve their lives and education esp so that then a true sense of democracy can THEN be applied. maybe in 20 years minimum
I thought I would need to add more to this video but you've impressed me with how well-made and well-rounded the arguments were for both the pros and cons of this project. As of right now, the government is lying in state media by claiming that this new capital is supposed to "relief congestion off of cairo." Obviously, the new capital is one of the most expensive pieces of land in the entire country, so that is an utter lie. There's the final hope that whatever they manage to finish would attract investors and improve the economy and strength of our currency... but who knows.
It will releive the congestion in cairo somewhat by removing the rich ones.

I don’t know why, but Egypt has been trying to replace their capital for millenium, they have been trying to do so since at least the Bronze Age under Akhenaten in what was called amerna.
They did well to build a new capital, it is the best solution

as an egyptian living in egypt i can tell you that the government doesn’t need to legitamise anything. it is already loved very dearly due to the massive positive change that has occurred in all aspects of life here. the administrative capital is only the cherry on top that we think will make us a small to middle income economy no longer.

$50 billion? There are cheaper ways to solve Cairo's problem than building this new city. Public transportation, social housing, or even trying to increase the number of factories in the countries. Social housing in the old Cairo would be more benefiical than social housing in the new city.

China is only jointly building the business district in the New capital. The rest of the city is being built and financed by the Egyptian government and two large egyptian conglomerates 'Orascom' and the 'Arab Contractors'.

But they didn’t do anything good building this, the entire city will be only inhabited by the wealthiest in Egypt while all the normal working people in Egypt continue to live in crowded slums in Cairo, also the city is horribly planned and contained an ungodly amount of unnecessary bs like the massive skyscrapers and the biggest military headquarters in the world which Egypt does not need at all, also the city is planned as a car centric hellhole filled with ugly American style suburbs, and also it’s built in the middle of the desert and all those massive green parks are going to take hundreds of gallons of fresh water to keep green, and freshwater is already a growing concern in Egypt and this will definitely not help, and the main reason Egypt wanted to make this city is to move the unpopular government away from the people so that it’s harder for the people to organize and overthrow them like they did to the last dictator.

Egypt has spent over 400 billion in last 7 years with lots of mega projects in real estate; new urban district for low income families, infrastructure, roads ( Egypt became 34 WW on road safety ) , Electric high speed train largest in Africa, LRT ( light Electric train), Monorail, industrial, petrolium, agriculture and tourism. Cairo the old city has got a large part of investments. A correction from someone who invest already in The New Capital. 3- attracting funds; the capitol already attracted funds. the government did not spend a single penny on building any of the residential areas in the new capitol, all of them are build by local and foreign investors. The government only spent on government buildings, and those made a profit as it sold the old buildings in cairo that occupied business strategic value and sold for much more than building on uncharted sand, so, the country actually made a profit by moving the government and already attracted investment that built and are building residential areas.
