      This. It's so weird how back then when the game was accompanied with this style of music it felt somehow so futuristic and developed. Now looking back it's the sound of gaming nostalgia for me.

      @@CloneOhHigh Most of the games were "flawless" by today's standards. The lack of information and interconnectedness made the journey more otherworldly. Because of the internet, nowadays artists are influenced by the same musicians that they are exposed to the most by the (UA-cam) algorithm. If you would like to create music you just basically search for "how to make jungle dnb" on UA-cam. I think the part of the magic is that we had no idea how these music were made in the 90s.

      Yup: Star Trek was still optimistic, web 1.0 had such great freedom, people werent so dependent on technology, and the technology that did come out might've been less user friendly but more consumer oriented, racism was generally thought to be a thing of the past, people were still able to hold a conversation... you either die a youngster or see yourself become the person praising the good old days...but then again the fact that we were kids with almost no responaibilities and many things went over our heads helped romanticise this era and reminds me of this baudrillard quote: when the real is no longer what it was, nostalgia asumes its full meaning.

    • @osiamfilms

      @@9an13l Well put. There's hope yet though, people, such as myself, are ditching their smartphones and returning to a flip phone, minimalizing our use of technology that really doesn't make us anymore connected or happy. I tend to romanticize the past, sometimes I get stuck watching old home videos in VHS and listening to such music as this, in moderation it can be nostalgic, often it depresses or embolizes me, making me despise the current, the now, I'm conscious of it though.

    • @9an13l
      @9an13l 2 роки тому +18

      @@osiamfilms that is indeed very optimistic, but grasping and accepting the reciprocating influence between quality of content and its effects on the end-consumer, makes me pretty depressed about the ever increasing 1dimensionality and now in 2022 almost non existing impulse control within our younger generations and even peers or a few older people. Never before was it so evident that "we live in a society" , and so diving into stoicism while still being pretty bad at it is one attempt to takle the more personal aspects of living in our futureless endless present...

      I currently work in games and this kind of music would be criticized as: "Porn Music" or "Too Trippy" for games. The companies are currently too big and too scared to do anything really cool so when making games, always thinking of the "average" audience and what a 12 year old kid would like. Games like in this playlist were made by people who also enjoyed making it and wanted to put some of themselves in it, especially at the time when you didn't have over 1000s of managers and executives breathing down your back who are also looking to take each other down/ outdo each other when making a game. The result is a very bland, boring, tasteless "product" that has you looking back at these games and wondering "what the hell happened?"
      Games are just games, a fun way to pass the time, bond with friends or family, build relationships.

    Jungle/DnB still sounds futuristic even though my brain is recognising these sounds as being really old. Maybe because, as others have put it, it sounds like the music of a future that we didn't get? Not to get overly deep but when the optimistic future that Jungle/DnB sounded like didn't happen, it still ends up being the music of a hypothetical future ahead of us.

    Fun fact: this genre got extremely popular during the PS1 and Dreamcast era because it was impossible to make on the sound chips of older 16-bit systems. Fun fact for the section of Foregone Destruction at 29:23 - the uncanny '3-dimensional' sound of the drums is created by taking a mono drum sample, splitting it into identical left and right channels, and then phase-inverting one of those 2 channels. You can always check if this effect was used by listening with Mono audio on your device. The sample will basically disappear since the left and right channel neutralize each other.

    The way that this music meshes so well with some of the artistic direction in these games is just mind blowing. When you look at the artwork even in this video of the covers it all just makes sense to be accompanied by the music. They don’t make artistic games like this no more. Now it’s just who has the prettiest looking games and we’ll put OSTs with generic electronic pop or ambient nature-y stuff. When gaming had this beautiful cross section of techno, hip hop, jazz & undertones of rock it was amazing. It felt like the future. Only game that immediately comes to mind that still makes sure to have great art in terms of visually and music is Persona. ARTISTIC does NOT equate to looking PRETTY/VISUALLY STUNNING and I wish more game studios were still aware of this difference. Listening to this, I get a sense of warmth and sadness. The fact we lived through an amazing period in time and this era was arguably the peak of where everyone was care free and had next to no troubles, but also how we can never go back to do it all again and we are day by day getting further away from it. The nineties had it all, what I’d do to go back and appreciate it properly.
