Honestly, I was confused why this was called a N64 mix when I didn't recognize any of the games it was from at first. I thought they were just good standalone drum & bass songs. The good music got me to stay long enough to figure out it actually is from the console and games I've played lol.
It’s aged remarkably well but it was much cleaner sounding than the dnb tracks of the time. It was kind of hard to take it seriously too because it was a video game soundtrack. It was about placement and context - tracks needed DJs to play them to gain legitimacy. The cues for what made a track fit within a scene can also be very subtle and difficult to differentiate in retrospect. Music scenes were very rigid in the 90s, similar for hiphop beats on video game soundtracks in the 90s - they have aged well listening today but at the time they sounded cheesy. There are lots of rap acts on Spotify that never made it in the 90s, it’s hard to remember they sounded like pale imitations of big artists of the time because some of the tunes are quite good and give the same nostalgia value. Coming back to these tunes I think the lack of direct comparison to tunes of the time, convergence of genres and less rigid genre boundaries have helped this sound fresh today.
That feeling as a kid, renting a game from blockbuster and playing it all Friday night and weekend... hogging the TV with your siblings and friends. Those were golden years.

The transitions are absolutely impeccable. This is a mix for the ages. Literally, it preserves this music in a manner that many younger people will listen as well.
Bomberman Hero was so cool. I grew up with an older brother who was a DJ at the time so the soundtrack really appealed to me. The composer (a Japanese woman) is still proud of her work and regularly listens to remixes of her work from Bomberman Hero.
This is the most based playlist I've seen in a long time. As someone who spent over a month perfecting a mix not even as long as this one I can respect the amount of work you must have put into this. Getting tracks to play well together in the transition is always the most satisfying part for me.

I've made a few breakbeat remixes of Nintendo tracks in my time, specifically because I notice some Nintendo VGM would sound so good with a drumtrack, and... what better drumtrack to append than one that's progressive and has tasty breaks? ❤ Alas, most of this one is just drum 'n' bass... but it's still nice! I have heard mix 02 and noted there's much more jungle in that one. Sounds great.

I always had a PlayStation but all my neighbors had N64s and I would second hand play all their games and these tracks are just taking me to a very distinct time and place. Having more information about music and influences it’s crazy how all the stuff I love is some how connected. Very serendipitous. Also Bomberman Hero has some insane beats I’m going nuts over here

I grew up with the 64 and PS1 being my main consoles and from all the music i've heard from consoles before and since, this generation of gaming was the peak of game soundtracks, i've held this belief for such a long time and seeing these mixes just proves to me that i'm not alone in the way I feel, hah I cannot thank you enough for this

I don't think you can possibly parse how tangibly validating these mixes are. I grew up with the 64 and PS1 being my main consoles and from all the music i've heard from consoles before and since, this generation of gaming was the peak of game soundtracks, i've held this belief for such a long time and seeing these mixes just proves to me that i'm not alone in the way I feel, hah
