I will add something: if one is feeling lazy/or does not want proceed further to cook chanko, even broth will be enough to indulge on... I am cooking simple Japanese dishes every weekend, including their famous vitamin bomb - misoshiru… people, that's love!

In winter time i used to get cold and hungry in the night, then i eat some instant ramen almost everyday for the last couple weeks now. I know its not healhty at all. After reading ur post, i will try chanko nabe instead.

What they don't tell you about is the amount of rice that they eat with it. It's the only way they can get enough calories in to bulk up as much as they do. They also only work out for around 5 hours a day in the morning

@@vlada Sumo aren't fat contrary to their looks they are mostly muscle, just very heavy set like a body builder but they are more strength training more so that just going for shear vanity muscle alone. This is protein packed to help build and maintain all that muscle.

It really says something when the meals for the sumo wrestlers, the only overweight people in japan, are far healthier than the ones for general populace in western world.
They aren't overweight because they're "fat." They're overweight because of the nature of their sport. Normal people can probably eat this everyday and not gain a pound!

As far as I read they've been examined by scientists and they have fat but underneath the skin. They do not have fat in their guts and organs. Damn asians...even fat they're heatlhy!

It's not simply the stew itself, it's the fact that after eating the wrestlers all nap that helps to accumulate weight. Chanko is actually extremely healthy, and most sumo wrestlers have better BMIs than normal people, with the weight they carry being almost entirely muscle.

You would be astonished at how much muscle they have. You might also be surprised to know that they can generally do full splits and then stretch forward until their entire torso is on the ground (a stretching exercise called matawari). They're big guys, but don't mistake them for anything other than the consummate athletes that they are.

Actually, the original recipe is very simple and easy, without oil, a lot of vegetables and just need to boil the ingredients. It use 'dashi', instead of chicken broth. After the dashi boiled, just put chopped vegetables and meat inside. That's it. Enjoy your meal.
Will the leaves of the baby bok choi be overcooked by the time the chicken is cooked through? The broth was already boiling before the meat balls were put in.

Chanko nabe is my favorite recovery food after a long distance running or cycling.

I made this but the chicken was too salty. It was good, but 4 tbs soy sauce and 2 tbs sesame oil is a lot!

the 2 tbsp of sesame oil was what really threw me off. that stuff is so insanely strong I feel like thats all you'd taste in those meatballs.
