I have just started my Lightfast collection. I have bought five pencils myself, and I was given two pencils as a gift on two different occasions. Who would have believed that receiving a gift of just one colour pencil can my my heart beat so much faster!
Hi, I really enjoy watching your videos, so much so I am going to have a hunt around the charity shops and see if I can pick up a few coloured pencils I may get lucky and grab a bargain. I've not done any drawing since school around 30+ years ago and I'm really looking forward to getting a few materials together and trying your tutorials. Thank you for inspiring me and keep up the great work.
Thank you for show more clearly this set of 36 colored pencils! I want a video like this! I love the range of colors they are have, but, perhaps the company should have added an ultramarine blue, and more variety of greens. But, I think that those colors are like for some drawing of neutral colors. I wish to have it! Enjoy this fabulous pencils!!!

They're oil pencils, which DUH, if you press them down so hard of course they shatter... they're not meant to used that way. Also, those light colours are meant to layer them so you can create lots of new colours...
Why would you wait until Aussie imports them into their art supply stores? I live in NZ & buy most of my supplies from Jacksons UK, i also live rural so in NZ I am charged an extra rural delivery charge but from UK i get cheaper postage & great packaging in 7-10days.
Really?? last time I checked, postage to Australia was ..... well, more expensive than the damned pencils!!i did notice that individual colours are finally available in my favourite online store now, so the wait is over... but I wish I had seen this sooner !!
Hello, thank you for this test, very nice bird 👍 I wonder how the coverage of the Derwent is on toned paper in comparison to Polychromos and Prismacolor. Prismacolor cover very well, the Luminance Permanent Red was disappointing on black paper. Very weak in comparison. I only bought three single pencils of the Luminance and was disappointed from the coverage.
Your picture is amazing! I have the full set of the Lightfast.... I'm from the UK .... I love the easy lay down of them. I also have a full set of Derwent Drawing and with the Lightfast and Drawing combined, they're really great too. The Drawing are more creamy than the Lightfast. It is a pity it's so easy to break the tip on the Lightfast ... a bit frustrating.
Oooohhh I am going to have to get myself a set of the Derwent drawing, somehow I have resisted so far... but you can never have enough pencils... can you??

Hi Cassandra, lovely drawing! I just bought the initial 36 and was surprised that the cloud grey is more like a metallic silver, which I didn’t notice until I went to use it in the shadow of an eye. Turn the pic on it’s side and it’s really shiny and obvious. Just wondering if everyone has this for cloud grey?
Cassandra Hanley , I emailed Derwent with a pic that shows the sheen and they said that’s the correct colour and not a fault. I thought it was pretty strange to be honest but everyone seems to have the same. Luckily I love a lot of the other colours.
I find I use them a lot along side my polychromos. If I could only choose one I would stick to the polychromos, but these are a very nice set to have on hand as well
If I was buying, I would go for the polychromos first. The Derwent are great and some of the colours are AMAZING! But I think the polychromos are a little bit more versatile and there’s not much you wouldn’t be able to do with the set
Ooooh, they’re very nice and would work very well for blending skin tones. but if I was looking for a premium pencil for portraits I’d lean towards the caran Darche luminance. They just have a larger range of nice base skin tones to work from

:/ yes... it has taken quite a while.. considering Derwent is a very popular and easily obtainable brand here in Australia, it really confuses me why it has taken this long!!

I neded to know how the Studios differed from the Lightfast Pencils and your review solved that. Thank you! Your replies are not showing up, so I am sorry for asking again.I don't know why this is, maybe I did something to cause it. OK, I would love to know what support you used to draw this beautiful bird. I am so hoping a smoother surface was used. I hope your reply shows up for me. Thank you!!! You are a delight!!
This piece would have been completed on arches hot press watercolour paper. It’s not a super smooth surface, I find it has just enough texture to grab the pencil without being to hard to fill in the tooth :)

You use as many different brands as you like! I was just testing these ones out for this drawing, but I now use them with my polychromos all the time :)
I had the set of 36 Derwent Lightfast pencils and I was watching UA-cam one of the pencil Artist's and she had a box of 72 colours and said where you can get them so I bought a tin. When I sent for them I found out that the tins were full 72 or half empty 36 and another space for another 36 that was already out . On UA-cam she explained that there was another 28 Lightfast pencils but Derwent Company held them back and was bringing the out in September as a wooden box or individuals. This Artist had the 72 set and the 28 individuals the rest of us will have to wait till September.

Silly question: are u using a brush to blend the colors together? If so, is the brush dry? Or wet? Thank u!
Not a silly question! I have a very small amount of odourless mineral spirit on my soft brush.

I wonder how the coverage of the Derwent is on toned paper in comparison to Polychromos and Prismacolor. Prismacolor cover very well, the Luminance Permanent Red was disappointing on black paper. Doesn’t stick well over time. The brush and pencil products are designed for this.

Odourless mineral spirits on a paintbrush , it only takes the tiny , itty bitty amount! Almost dry brush!!

Yeah... I noticed that too, which I actually find pretty disappointing :( I dont have much use for a metallic pencil

It is odourless mineral spirit, the same stuff used to thin oil paint

I like to blend my be cold using. Odourless mineral spirit. It’s not necessary but it saves my poor fingers a lot of work!

The place where I bought the 72 set was Cult Pens I do not know if they will get anymore Derwent tins.
They do have them ( and I nearly bought them from there) but shipping made the price just a little to high for me :)
