Replacing Screw Clamps with a Quick Clamp on my Woodland Mills HM122 Sawmill

- I'm too conscious of the dwindling amount of time I have left on Earth to waste any of it screwing and unscrewing log clamps on my sawmill. Quick Clamps, or single-throw cam clamps, aren't an option on the Woodland Mills HM122, but it's possible to make a Quick Clamp designed for the larger mills work. I was surprised at how easy it is.

Thank you for the inspiration, I’ve struggled with those horrible screw clamps for a couple of years and finally ordered and installed two of the cam clamps. Took less than an hour for both after watching your very detailed video. They work like a charm and has made sawing a lot more fun. Now I just have to figure out why my drive belts keep failing.
What's happening with your drive belts? I'm still on my original belt.
@@OregonOldTimer My drive belts are moving too low into the pulley and over heating, the top portion overlaps the wheels and causes fraying, to the point they slip and smoke. My clutch looks good and the bearing seems okay but the clutch is over heating. I was using the flush positioning for tensioning but recently started using a torque wrench, started at 24 ft pounds, then 23, next try will be 22. The spare parts kit I purchased didn’t have a clutch bearing so I just bought 2 on Amazon. One more try at a lower torque, then a bearing swap. If that fails I will just break down and get a new clutch.
Just watching you on your knees made mine hurt! I built a 20" platform to raise my mill up so i dont have to bend over much to remove my lumber. I have a small excavator to load logs so i dont need a ramp to roll logs up to get them on the mill. Its about the same height as the trailer frame so it gives me lots of room under for the clamps to hang down.
Mill height is a trade-off, all right. If I had a tractor to lift logs, putting the mill higher would be better. If I milled only small logs, loading onto a raised mill by hand would be doable. But by having the mill on the ground, my back gets plenty of exercise.

You just helped a lot of hm122 people asking about fitting these on there mill. Good video and I had to shift my pins in my cam clamp on my hm126 as well I was getting quite frustrated with it not going in as well
I like the way you did this new clamp and have the hm122 myself and been thinking about doing this also. Thanks for showing the best way to do this to make things easier
Glad it was helpful. If you have enough room underneath your rails, that would be a better, and easier, installation.

I enjoy these videos, they give me hope that I too will be able to continue tinkering, fixing and making things well into my old age! (I am currently 65). Keep them coming! One observation, as Gerald Minko has commented, the clamp handle as you had it clamping the board, is higher than the clamp arm (i.e. with the arm leaning backwards towards the saw). A suggestion to help you avoid hitting the handle is to swing the clamp forwards, I.e. leaning away from the saw) and the clamp handle will sit below the top of the arm, lowering the overall profile when locked in place.

I had a similar mill in the early 2000s and always hated those screw clamps. I'm about to buy your exact mill so it's good to know i can also do this. I have also had a major arm injury to my dominant arm since last owning a mill and my arm will forever be weaker and less functionable. For that reason i'm also looking at a dc winch to save from so much using a cant hook. I appreciate the video Old Timer.
A bum arm is no fun. My bad shoulder makes cranking the mill up and down more difficult than it should be, which is why I often use both hands. Time will come when I'll regret not having a powered mill head. Woodland Mills offers one now, but not for the 122.

Working on my knees is easy. Getting up is the hard part.
I would suggest shimming between the end plates and the rail, placed low enough for the wheels to clear. Otherwise if something contacts the end plate(s) they will twist on that single bolt and obstruct your wheels.

I had been wondering about that clamp. I ordered an extra screw clamp for mine because I am making a short log bunk so I can cut 2 foot logs.
The ordering team is good, always trying to help. I ordered a tool box for a bigger trailer and they changed it and made the right size for my trailer even though it's not listed.
Sales and tech support are both superb.

I have a pint can of grease just as old. Grease and oil are only half used up.
Ha! I'm an ole cougar myself and I knew there was a better clamp. I called and talked to Woodland (and I do like them a lot) but they said no. I was about to order anyway and and suss it out but your video sealed the deal for sure. Had there been any issues? I am new at this and having fun building my shed as first project. Thanks for your knowledge ....for what use is it without sharing?! (retired teacher)
The only negative to this installation is, the size of the log or cant I can use it on is less than with the standard clamps. However, one viewer suggest that, if I'd mounted it UNDER the track, I'd have more travel.
I use the cam clamp all the time and seldom need to also use the screw clamps.
Why not cut the permanent mounting bracket off, get two U bolts and mount it to the bottom of the rail with those?

Nice work. So what is the point of that t-handle set screw? Also, I wonder if this could be mounted to slide on the 122's existing skinny round bars just by making an insert bushing to go between the bar and collar?

I don't know what that screw is for. I took it out.
The 122 clamp bars may not be strong enough to support the pressure this clamp is capable of. The bar that comes with this one is as a log is to a twig.
Been watching some videos on different sawmills because I am thinking about buy one.
I'm wanting to build onto my house and use the trees from my property.
Any suggestions on the best cheap sawmill to get not wanting to spend over $3500 on a sawmill.
Woodland Mills prices are lower than most brands for comparable mills. Many folks advise buying a bigger one than you think you'll need. But if you want one for one project, you'll be able to get most of your money back when you sell it, whichever one you buy.

Received the sawmill February 2021. Only about 55 hours on it so far.
At the end of your video I noticed the clamping handle is taller then the clamp itself...you would need to clamp the board on the far side.
You aren't the only one who noticed that. Heck, even I did after that. Flopping it over to the right solves the issue.
im curious why you didn't simply turn the mounting plate around and mount it under the rail. You could then use both bolts. Having the mounting plates inboard would not make any difference in the clamping. also you would then have room to drill two holes either side of the mounting , through the pipe for cotter pins to prevent the pipe from sliding. which incidentally, you would not have needed if you cut the pipe to the exact length between your rails. there's still time .
There isn't enough room under the rails with my setup.
Cut a hole in your board all the away across on floor same wide as the clamp and it hold it in the upright position for u.
I don't want a hole in the floor because I don't want sawdust to build up down there, but I could cut a strip out of the floor the width of the clamp and the span of the rails and lay a wider strip of wood a bit over twice the length of the cutout in the floor over that cutout with a hole to fit the clamp and let that slide back and forth with the clamp to keep the cutout in the floor covered. I like it and may do that. Thank you.

I ended up cutting a narrow slot without a cover. If sawdust builds up under there, I can reach in with a hoe and drag it out.
Try again. Why couldn't you have turned the pipe bracket around and put it under the track. Seems like you c old put all the screws in then.

Those WM log cam clamps are lousy. I made some myself out of scrap steel two drilled holes and one weld. They are fast and secure. I complained to WOODLAND about the clamp that came with my 126.You need at least two clamps on a 10 foot log. Anything longer 3. I cant believe their mill only has 1.
Unless the log is an odd shape, I've found that one clamp in the right place is usually enough. I'd like to see the clamps you made.
@@OregonOldTimer 2 screw clamps and 2 improved cam clamps. I couldnot for the life of me get the WM clamp to work. I need to do some work on it to fix it. I used the pipe it slid on and made a couple of more besides.
I had the same problem. The clamp tensioner would not move, had to disassemble it. It was bent and caused it to bind. Finally got it to move freely. Poor quality control.@@virginiastanley8178
