Sometimes I forget that R.E.M. was one of the best bands of the 80s-00s. Then I see them live and think, "Oh... yeah."
Forget singing...Michael Stipe's talking voice gives me goosebumps!
I thought Heisenberg's voice was powerful enough but man, hearing Michael was like "damn I wouldn't mess with him"
REM- a band gone, but certainly not forgotten.

I read an interview with Michael Stipe some years ago where he stated that the song was about manipulation and using people.
@@buggulugs The song is probably about Stipe himself. He said in an interview he was a "cold ass bitch" to those he slept with as a young man.
I think it's so often overlooked how great the backing vocals sung by the bass player, Mike, is. "She's comin' down on her own, now. She's coming down on her own." He nailed it here live.
Never listened to those backing vocals. You're right. Mysterious lyrics.

I will *forever* enjoy the fact that this song is on mixtapes sent to peoples' sweethearts _despite_ it being one of the most savage breakup songs of all time; it's like putting "Zombie" by The Cranberries into a Halloween mix.

The riff sounds similar to Neil Young’s Out of the Blue (and into the black) but I love R.E.M. and I’m sure Neil does, too.

Right at the end , the bass player is singing while starting to slow his playing and not lose a beat or look at him fretboard. Pretty damn good!!
Turn the vinyl a little faster, add a little more energy and you have this performance. Wow.

To me, at this speed, it loses some of the sinister aspect. I always thought this was a pretty creepy song. My band used to cover it. It was one of my favorites to play.

The Original Drummer who wrote all these great drum grooves and fills is Bill Berry... he retired to his farm in the late 90's. He is/was an excellent tasteful drummer for all the great REM hits...

Way too fast, that drummer needs to chill, he destroyed the groove. I don't understand why so many drummers speed up the songs to the point of sounding like shit.
