While series 2 was better, i did really enjoy season 1. Especially the one with the canibals and the final. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to skip it as it is still pretty good, and it is important to building up the characters and story.
yeetus fetus Yeah. The pedophiles episode was a bit naff but the stuff with Jack is golden. I’d recommend skimming through the episode for the Jack stuff
For someone who likes dr who or sci-fi I would say watch all of it, but for someone who doesn’t just watch children of earth because whoever you like dr who or sci-fi or not it is a great bit of TV
@@ThePhantomLK Yeah that's why everyone talks about it. Also that one episode of class you know the one with the shadow kin where they have "character" development.
Of course its Children of Earth. I'd go so far as to say that Children of Earth is my favorite story in the entire Whoniverse. It blows anything Doctor Who has ever done way out of the water. More evidence as to why I feel Doctor Who is held back by being a family show.
I think one of the main reasons Doctor Who is held back because it doesn’t have continuous 5 part long stories to develop a story. The most a doctor who story is, is a 2 parter
There are audio dramas of Torchwood being produced now actually. They already have 24 episodes out (as of the time of this post). If you miss Torchwood that might be the place to go. Reviews say that "Torchwood has finally found it's home." Also, Owen and Tosh are still alive, so.
11 years old, starting secondary school I picked up a torchwood book in the school library. I’d never watched the show, at the time I didn’t realise it was a show, but I’d loved dr who for years. The books kept me going that year, I read them every library period and lunch. Eventually I watched the show, which broke my heart and later met the cast at comic con, they swore a lot for 12 year old me and I can still see the look on my dads face when he realised what sort of thing I’d been reading and watching 😂
@Alice Collins a) it's just End of Days and b) the main reason why I'm okay with Day One is because of Stubagful's Snuggly Chibnall Time discussion video. BTW here's two quotes from the video about them. "But no, it's still going... and then another thing happened. Why won't you die End of Days?! Why won't you die?!" "Did Torchwood invent Come Dine With Me? Because if so, fuck this show."
1. Out Of Time 2. Captain Jack Harkness 3. Ghost Machine 4. Everything Changes 5. They Keep Killing Suzie 6. Countrycide 7. Combat 8. Small Worls 9. Cyberwoman 10. Day One 11. Greeks Bearing Gifts 12. End Of Days 13. Random Shoes
Children of earth caught me off guard. I was really enjoying the show for the most part, especially coming toward the end of season 2, and then it hit me sideways like a left hook I didn’t see coming. I’m not a person who is easily affected by shocking media, but children of earth fucked me up for a minute. It was so dark and like actually scary, and hopeless and I completely forgot for a moment that this was even in the same universe as Doctor Who. It was so tightly fitted with story and character and it just raised the stakes again and again until I genuinely believed there was No way Torchwood could win, that the human race was actually doomed, and the ending when it happened still didn’t disappoint. If someone hasn’t seen Torchwood, I recommend season two, and maybe a bit of season 1... but you HAVE to watch season 3, Children of earth
It's revealed in one the stories in 'The Lives of Captain Jack' by BIG FINISH, sadly the name is sort of unremarkable and I wish they hadn't revealed it.
I really like children of earth, but after they killed almost the whole torchwood team (especially Ianto), I don't want to watch season 4 and I actually didn't wonder why the show is ending after that season That's very sad, because I really like torchwood and Captain Jack
Captain Jack Harkness the plot of Miracle Day is so weird, and not the interesting type of weird that TW usually does. Just plain old what the actual fuck am I watching, this is so stupid
What I love about Torchwood is that there’s not always a mystery. There’s not always a plot. It’s based on character, as you said. That’s what I loved about it. P.S. Fragments was originally going to be Toshiko Sato and Owen Harper’s departures but was decided by RTD to save that for Exit Wounds.
Never really watched it. Too young at the time but recently I have been feeling nostalgic for oldnu who and Torchwood popped into my mind. Nice review, may check it out!
Doctor Who started when I was just turned 8 so I watched it really late too. It is definitely is worth a watch :) The quality is a bit all over the place, but when it's good, it's REALLY damn good. Also, fair warning, the Torchwood "fanbase" sucks.
Imagine if they brought Torchwood back, taking place after the big finish Series 5 & 6 but showing how they reformed Torchwood after Miracle Day, with Jack, Gwen, Rhys, Rex, and maybe a newbie, (I'd like Owen to get brought back given we never saw his body but it needs to be epic like Flash coming out of the speed force or Wonder Woman in the witching hour or Phoenix or Bad Wolf, it really just needs good vfx which can be provided to such a good show in 2018). The story should follow what the "phase 2" mentioned at the end of miracle day entails, with The Families as the villain perhaps working for something or someone else
Reuben Everybody but Owen should be available for resurrection from the morgue, Suzuki, Toshiba, and Ianto, and likely a few others we have not met, if the morgue is still there.
Holy shit you have no idea how perfect this video is. Made me stare at my computer like 10min or so. #feeeelings And now i wanna rewatch every single minute.
season 1 has some awesome episodes, countrycide is one of my favourite episodes, they keep killing suzie is another good one, and i enjoyed out of time a lot as well
Watch the pilot then SKIP to season 2? Not recommended. You'd miss some of the best episodes of Torchwood ever, such as Countrycide. Most people I know actually prefer season 1 over 2.
I do have to agree with you for the most part, even though I haven’t listened to Slow Decay, but I would like to add the story with the Glove, that was really good too! I was a major Torchwood Fan before becoming a Whovian!
Excellent celebration of the best of Torchwood. I would give an honourable mention to Sleeper; the horror of finding out your whole life is a lie (or is it?) and the knowledge that it's all going to disappear - with the "when" coming without warning and being the trigger of an alien invasion... Horrible. Also, if we're including TW books, I have to say that my favourite is the inspiration for "Adam," "Border Prince" by Dan Abnett. Better than the episode yet different in an absolutely brilliant way, this novel hooked me on TW books. Go read the Amazon review by Andra Gannols for a peek. While I love my Doctor Who and am excited to see what Chris Chibnall will bring to it, Torchwood is my favourite rewatch telly. Long live Captain Jack & Co, even the ones who are dead and gone.
Glad Torchwood is being continued on audio. I've yet to hear series 6 but series 5 was pretty good. Mr Colchester has quickly become one of the best characters for me
I would have to say my favorite Torchwood book is The Twilight Streets. It gave Billis Manger much needed depth and motivation that was lacking in his tv appearances. The House of the Dead is also a fantastic radio drama that is able to stand shoulder to shoulder with Big Finish's best Torchwood stories.
Slow Decay is such a great novel, made even better by the audiobook being read by Burn Gorman (Owen) and naming the parasite things after the Beatles! XD
As a fan of Doctor Who since the revival in 2005 and LOVE RTD's run with an aggressive passion based on nostalgia and genuine merit, I watched the first two series of Torchwood at the beginning of 2017 for the first time ever and doubted it would top the nostalgic and masterful episodes of the past...it didn't. Some episodes were good, but overall it was probably weaker then what I had seen in early series of SJA. Then I watched Children Of Earth and it still stands as my favourite thing I have ever seen in movies, television, games, books, etc. in my life! And then I watched Miracle Day...
Hi dactyl the same here, I don’t know how to explain to people how it’s the best piece of fiction I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing. I was hoping 1 and 2 would recapture the nostalgia, but then just highlighted RTDs weaknesses as a writer. COE is what I feel is Davies’ treasured story, like all his passion has came out in perfection. I usually mind his sudden resolution for an ending, but the story as a whole overshadows any imperfections.
It's funny. I get that season 1 has a lot of duds, but it also has some of my favourite episodes. Ones you didn't even mention here. Countrycide. Countrycide was the "holy sh%t, this is where I want this show to go!" episode for me. It was the first really dark episode that nailed themes to do with humanity. Jack saving the day is a bit silly, but otherwise that episode is one ball of tension. And the main baddy... Absolutely terrifying. Then there is "They Keep Killing Suzie". One of my all-time favourites. Even though, as someone from a Christian family, the talk of afterlife makes me a little uncomfortable (the show is weirdly inconsistent with the afterlife) I love that it sinks it's teeth into our fear of death. Suzie is also a great antagonist as she is both crazy and does evil things, but she is somehow still very sympathetic. And the plot moves at a breakneck speed. That shot where Jack stands over Suzie's dead body and the music starts playing. Gives me shivers. The episode also has a few really funny moments. And a great examination of the team dynamics. The only thing I was bummed about is we didn't see the fallout. Another episode people sleep on, which I know is also very divisive, is 'Random Shoes'. I love this episode. It definitely hits the bitter twang of grief you get in a dysfunctional family, which hits a little close to home. But also this fear I think many of us have of leading an insignificant life and being forgotten. It's bitter-sweet and yet beautiful. Honestly, these three are my favourites of season 1. I like a few others, but these are the ones I come back to again and again and again.
I dont mind Miracle Day on it's own but I very much count it as a separate show. There's Torchwood, and then there's Miracle Day, because as you said COE was a natural end. It's like Life on Mars and Ashes to Ashes, for me.
Back when shows like Primevil were popular. Torchwood fell into that catagory. But where as shows like primevil tried new things with character relationships and new personalities, Torchwood already had the relationships and characters built. I miss this...
me: *hears that owen gets put through a lot in slow decay* Interesting, interesting *opens up a new tab and googles* look i love my main man owen i just love watching stories where he suffers
Although one of their best stories was based on an alien threat where the Earth needed the Doctor most (seriously, what's the explanation for where the 10th Doctor was and why the 12th didn't help while fulfilling his Oath to guard Missy). Also I want to see a non TV story of any incarnation after Tennant - or even Tennant himself during his build to Time Lord Victorious - coming across the 456 and confronting them.
zak jaggs Day 5, really? I’d like to hear your thoughts about this. I’ve always considered it to be the least interesting episode from CoE. Like idk Gwen had literally no purpose, and the whole problem was solved way too quickly and easily, it kinda made the previous episode’s end pointless
I hated children of earth and i stalled watching it. (Especially because I knew what was gonna happen with Ianto.) i finished season 1 and 2 in a few days, but the COE took me a weeks alone. After every episode i felt like I've had crippling depression all my life.
filth children of earth isn’t a light watch. From episode 1 onwards the theme becomes ‘hey let’s take away all the familiar Torchwood elements and staples one by one’
I adored Torchwood! It was bleak and torturous done well. Children of Earth was amazing and would never, ever be done on ultrasafe American TV. I'd agree, most of season 1 was pretty disposable (the Cyberwoman? C'mon!) but the characters were so good and developed... and then kind of had horrible endings. Ah well.
How could you miss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? It had everything! Humor, sex, adventure, backstory, romance, an amazing guest character , and a blowfish driving a sports car! What more could you ask?
i would actually recommend watching season 1 in its entirety. its not good at times, but countryside hit me really hard and i don't think it would've hit without the scifi buildup. and episode 10 is a really interesting character study to me
There are audio dramas of Torchwood being produced now actually. They already have 24 episodes out (at of the time of my comment). If you miss Torchwood that might be the place to go. Reviews say that "Torchwood has finally found it's home." Plus the company producing them has a lot of experience writing Doctor Who type shows. They gave Sarah Jane her own audio series before she had her own show. Which I think is pretty good. They might have been the reason why Sarah Jane was brought back into the DW universe.
It was really good. My favourite to be honest. But I see so many people who dislike it. I thought it was so well done with a great concept and really interesting plot, with one of the best endings ever. The ending was Eugene trying to help Torchwood, by saving Gwen, which is what he always wanted, the thing he treasured most was so important in the plot and was quite unexpected when he uses it to save Gwen and his life seemed pointless to himself he didn't really have much going, but the one thing he stuck with turned out to be the most important thing for his character. I could go on forever lol
for me i started out hating countrycide but have fallen in love with it because it is purely about the darkness and depravity found in humanity. and shows that not all monsters are aliens and not all aliens are monsters
Honestly surprised that you didn't put the Owen trilogy, sure the 1st episode is just decent and the 2nd is weakened by aged effects, but episode 3 alone is enough to make it my favourite Torchwood story.
1. Ghost Machine 2. From Out of the Rain 3. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang 4. Out of time 5. Children of Earth 6. Random shoes 7. Captain Jack Harkness 8. Countrycide 9. Adrift 10. fragments
Kiss kiss Bang bang, They keep killing Suzie, and the final ep of season two. Yeah, it's a bit uneven, but it IS some of the greatest tv out there through how surprising it is. And no, I don't think you were too young for the love stories, maybe for the violence though? Oh, and what about when Gwen got married?
How could you not mention Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Countrycide or Cyberwoman? They are my three favourites. And I actually love series 1 tbh the quality may not look as smooth as the later seasons but the plots are very interesting and there's so many good character moments in there. DO NOT SKIP SEASON 1! It's fun and doesn't take itself too seriously so it can explore different things because it was a new show so the stakes were lower.
My humble opinion, Children of Earth is amazing, bits of season 2 are quite good, and season 1 was a terrible hot mess. It took them way too long to actually make me care about key new characters in the show (we don't find out anything about Tosh and Owen until near the end of the second season and we really should have had that sooner) and the first season was really just throwing darts at aboard and hoping something sticks. When a good story comes along it shows the potential the series had, but it is mired with too much mediocre to bad stuff early on to give it legs. I'm still trying to figure out what Miracle Day is, really. Aside from ridiculous, I mean.
I'm going to get bloody crucified for this, but I enjoyed Miracle Day more than CoE (although I still vastly preferred the single episode plot structure from S1 and S2 and that's not to say Miracle Day was particularly great). Yes, CoE is good. It just really wasn't for me. I had a constant feeling of dread while watching it, and not the good kind of dread. By the time Jack was forced to kill his grandson I just felt numb, horrified and quite frankly glad the series was over. Also, Capaldi as John Frobisher absolutely disgusted me which is funny to think about considering Capaldi is my favourite doctor. He played that slimy government official so well I just had to feel extremely uncomfortable whenever he was on screen. I guess much like CoE as a whole he was great, just really not for me.
I keep hearing people say that Children of Earth is the best season of Torchwood, but honestly it's my least favorite season. It's not bad, just not as good as the rest.
While series 2 was better, i did really enjoy season 1. Especially the one with the canibals and the final. I wouldn’t recommend anyone to skip it as it is still pretty good, and it is important to building up the characters and story.

I'd agree, most of season 1 was pretty disposable (the Cyberwoman? C'mon!) but the characters were so good and developed... and then kind of had horrible endings. Ah well.
LOL, it looks like the Adam episode premise was taken by rick and morty
@Daniel Cunliffe You need a very high IQ to understand Torchwood!
Oooooooooooooohhhhhh!!!! That meme never gets old. (You also need to have a very high IQ to understand the reference I made).
How could you miss Kiss Kiss Bang Bang? It had everything! Humor, sex, adventure, backstory, romance, an amazing guest character , and a blowfish driving a sports car! What more could you ask?
KKBB is dope.
i would actually recommend watching season 1 in its entirety. its not good at times, but countryside hit me really hard and i don't think it would've hit without the scifi buildup. and episode 10 is a really interesting character study to me
Torchwood is up there with Angel and Xena: Warrior Princess as one of the best television spin offs ever.
I would also give a shout out to A DAY IN THE DEATH for giving a really cool exploration of a fantastic concept.
For me my top 5 is
5. Countrycide
4. Fragments
3. Out of time
2. Adrift
1. Children of earth
Torchwood was fabulous. Bring it back.
They might have been the reason why Sarah Jane was brought back into the DW universe.
was adam the inspo for that one rick and morty episode?
I love this 😄😄😄 xxx
I like the list, but what about Random Shoes? That episode was so good
It was really good.
How is exit wounds not here???
for me i started out hating countrycide but have fallen in love with it because it is purely about the darkness and depravity found in humanity. and shows that not all monsters are aliens and not all aliens are monsters
The worst thing about children of earth is when 11 sent someone back to be part of it, I think in a future comic
My top 5
1. Children of Earth (obviously)
2. Random Shoes
3. Adam
4. Ghost Machine
5. Adrift
Adam ends up being borrowed by Rick and Morty
I also loved Countrycide, but nice list
Oh sweet Lord I have slow decay as an audio book it's fanstic
end of days is probably my favourite
I'm 4 and I love this show
Torchwood is pretty good. But it's no Paw Patrol.
Love the novels ❤
I actually thought adam was alright
No come on man, S1 has a good running story and it’s cool with the links to dw
Honestly surprised that you didn't put the Owen trilogy, sure the 1st episode is just decent and the 2nd is weakened by aged effects, but episode 3 alone is enough to make it my favourite Torchwood story.
I LOVE the Owen trilogy and if I were doing it now I would sneak in Dead Man Walking. It was my absolute favourite as a kid.
@@SamyulDavis Well.. it has been about 2 and a half years, you could make an updated one, or maybe do the 5 that didn't quite make the cut.
Cap'n Jack is THE best character in all of Doc Who 😎
I miss that show.
Torchwood is underrated tbh.
plz do more torchwood
iv got goose bumbs thinking of children of earth
1. Ghost Machine
2. From Out of the Rain
3. Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang
4. Out of time
5. Children of Earth
6. Random shoes
7. Captain Jack Harkness
8. Countrycide
9. Adrift
10. fragments
i fucking loved torchwood
I dunno I’d also check out random shoes and countrycide before watching episode 1 and 12
A day in the death is easily my favorite aside from children of earth.
What if Bill Potts is the CyberWoman from Torchwood
uhhhhhhhhhhhhhh
DUN DUN DUN!! What a twist! And The Valeyard is actually Clara! Oh, and The Master also turns out to be alternate timeline super Rose!
I... i just want it back
I think you're wrong about Series 1
Right when u completely spoiled Capaldi killing his family that was just fucking cruel. I’m serious wtf.
Adam was such a good story, Rick & Morty basically stole it haha
Sleepy Gary > Adam
You should do SJA
I have! 'The Best Who Spin-off?' check it out :)
We need touchwood back to distract us from the preachy, childish route the main series seems to be taking
Not another 2nd series revival from the same showrunner?
Adam was the first episode I saw...
S1E12 broke me
I'm going to get bloody crucified for this, but I enjoyed Miracle Day more than CoE (although I still vastly preferred the single episode plot structure from S1 and S2 and that's not to say Miracle Day was particularly great). I guess much like CoE as a whole he was great, just really not for me.
countrycide tho
except the ending
COUNTRYCIDE?
I keep hearing people say that Children of Earth is the best season of Torchwood, but honestly it's my least favorite season. It's not bad, just not as good as the rest.
❤️
really? "other people's shoes." isn't even mentioned?
I ship Jack and gwen so so much
WOW
