    That's a bit harsh on The Master's plan from Utopia. Initially he was hiding out in human form at the end of the universe to escape the Time War. Which, y'know, worked. When he was unexpectedly rescued and only able to travel between two specific times, he made excellent use of that opportunity.
    You're talking like this was his supervillain plan from the beginning, when actually it was him rolling with the punches and doing a damn fine job of it.
    And let's not forget that the Doctor was totally and utterly defeated. In the end, the Doctor only won via what was possibly the single biggest ass-pull in the history of the show - and that's saying a lot.

      How can I use this
      I mean he set up a global mind control network overnight, became prime minister and yeah, basically won
      Pretty damn successful for an off the cuff plan
      Missy is still way more competent though haha, I mean, she succeeded, the doctor just refused his part in it

    I would say that Master is supposed to be like Doctor if Doctor lost his way. This is especially focused on in the new era of Doctor Who. Which is why it is actually important that Master does not plan ahead. Because, neither does the Doctor. It just always turns out well for Doctor, partly because Doctor is not alone. Let's remember "Turn Left", Doctor was alone and it resulted in his death.
    There is this contrast of two brilliant time lords, two of the smartest, most exceptional beings in the universe. Two beings so same yet so different. Like one person splitting into two bodies that both went their own separate way which results in them having different values in the end.
    Once they meet and spent some time together the Doctor manages to make Missy see errors of her/his ways - once again pointing out that they are basically the same.

      He's great alongside missy, but she's just SO much better hahah
      Although I still like him better than the current hammy bastard
      Offscreen nukes gallifrey, rants exposition for hours and cancelled out all of Missy's development..
      And was party to character assassinating the doctor by having her sic Nazis on him hahaha, "see who you really are" yikes

    As a villain, the master is always weak yet I like the way the doctor has an equal and/or child hood friend. Both Delgado and Michelle Gomez nail the whole forbidden friends aspect. Which, personally is why I love the master/Missy (specifically Gomez and Delgado) as a flip side/child hood friend to the doctor, much more than an actual villain.

    • @SamyulDavis
      @SamyulDavis  5 років тому +17

      Perfectly said, without the demented friendship aspect...there's not a lot of character left. That's how you get pantomime villain.

    • @Ben-vf5gk
      @Ben-vf5gk 5 років тому +4

      Eh... The friendship is important, but it shouldn't go to the point were it feels like the Master isn't the Doctor's enemy. What makes the Master seem dangerous to me is that they're essentially a control freak with a god complex that stems largely from their Time Lord rank. It's what makes them a good contrast to the Doctor and is why Missy didn't feel like the Master as much, she didn't want power, she wanted to be the Doctor's friend. It kind of de-fangs the Master to me.

    • @Elnont
      @Elnont 5 років тому +6

      Ben Warburton hence why I said I don’t view the master as one of the best Villians. Simms was just absurd, despite the fact they got a very talented actor in they just practically had a pantomime bad guy in doctor who - as said in the video, Missy brought some class and credibility back to the character but the whole point of the master is the history. Hence why I enjoy Delgado and Gomez because both of which understand the importance of this, the scariest part of the master (for me) is the fact that he and the doctor were once a very similar person.

      @Annihilationzh 5 років тому +2

      @@Ben-vf5gk You make a good point. The doctor always lives up to his name. Even when he forsook his name (war doctor) he still lived up to it. But the master cannot turn good without forsaking his name. That's exactly what missy did. She betrayed her own name. Don't get me wrong, I loved her as a character more than I do the master. But she wasn't the master.

    • @Ben-vf5gk
      @Ben-vf5gk 5 років тому +3

      @@Elnont Sorry, this is all opinion and I don't mean offense but class and credibility?" In Series 10 sure, but I wasn't thinking that when Missy was shoving her tongue into the Doctor's mouth. Simm worked because he oozed arrogance- "I'm a timelord I have that right"- and he still had quieter moments with the Doctor (like the phone call in Sound of Drums) that reminded us of the friendship but didn't sacrifice his place as an antagonist for that. Simm also puts the Doctor through hell and hurt him in ways no other villain could; he took over the world, tortured and humiliated him for a year and made him the last of his kind once again.

    Tbf, the Master is a ridiculous villain, but doctor who is a ridiculous show. I think the reason people (or me) like the master showing up is that whoever is playing him or her is so good, you buy into whatever nonsense they are selling. The actors take the ridiculousness of the concept and run with it.
    The master is the joker to the doctor’s batman. Two sad, mysterious figures, destined to do battle forever. Also, his plans always seem more focused on getting one over the doctor than anything else. So I can’t really hate this villain

    • @thepoppets1052
      @thepoppets1052 5 років тому +2

      Same could be said for the Doctor, the only reason why the 10th Doctor's run was so good was because of David Tennant, same goes for Peter Eccelston, Matt Smith, and Peter Capaldi. No matter how ridiculous the script got the actor who plays the Doctor saves it, whats that? 2 farting alien politicians are planning to use nuclear power plants to power a space ship (I think), a library that a little girl in the matrix dreams of is real and is being attacked by shadows while the Doctor and his soon-to-be-dead wife are meeting for the first time, the Doctor invites his friends to watch him die by the hands of his wife, from the past, while his wife, current, is watching and when all is said and done the Doctor shows up in the diner with one of the invitations to watch himself die, whats next the Doctor spends 4.5 billion years basically Dark Soul-ing himself over and over until he punches his way through a wall of diamond and gets out and then proceeds to claim that a Hybrid is not one person that is two things but rather two people that are one thing, and then conquers Gallifrey to save Clara and then at the end he erases Clara from his own memories. Its all ridiculous, but the actors save it.

So if she could see the master was going to do something terrible she would make the Doctor stop it even if by doing so it creates the problem to be stopped in the first place.

    In fairness, The Master was just kinda winging it from when he reawakened to himself at the end of the universe, to when he landed in London in 2006-7. Even then, The Heavenly Paradigm adds that he only fled to the end of the universe out of desperation and terror, because one of his other plans backfired so hard he thought the Time War would never end.

    Ok but terror of the autons literally ends with the doctor being like “hey, you know your plan sucks because the autons will just kill you too when you’re done” and he’s like “oh shit you’re right” and helps reverse it and then runs away. Favourite Master stories:
    - Terror of the Autons- surprisingly fun interesting setup, great new companion, the Master gets some of his best lines, its a wonderful blend of cheesy and dark
    - Sea Devils, awesome way new take on a great monster, subtle way of handling the Doctor-Master relationship, the swordfight between the Doctor and the Master, the music, everything's great.
    -Frontier in Space, Delgado, Pertwee, and Manning. In their last story together these three make you realize why you're going to miss them
    - Survival, what Ainley's master should have been like for most of his tenure
    -Mastermind, always wanted to see the Master's hypnosis focused on more and taken to darker places. Thank you, Johnathon Morris!
    -Master, LISTEN TO THIS NOW!
    -Utopia/Sound of Drums/Last of the Timelords, My jaw dropped upon watching the first part. Two great masters, stakes as high as they'll ever be, a bit of a disappointing resolution, but the Master's death scene pulls it back for me.
    -World Enough and Time/ The Doctor Falls, Possibly my favorite story of all time. Gomez and Simm are at their best here, they are hilarious and their story fits really well into their story's themes. The scene where they kill each other is perfect.

      I agree. He's an awesome character who was badly utilized by writers, often unable to implement him seamlessly on their storyline. To make a great Master story, they must think like the Master. For instance, it doesn't make sense to pair him with the Daleks for a domination plot. Daleks are chaotic evil and don't take orders, they can only be used as diversion while he devises on a plan taking place at the other side of the universe. It is also a good idea to introduce a subversion as: the master decides to take on honorable way but he fucking sucks at it due to his patently self serving personality. But the character has to remain consistent, otherwise you betray his very essence and bury him.

    Missy didn't just SUDDENLY turn good though. I thought the same thing when I first saw the show however rewatching all of Missy's appearances from Deep Breath till the Doctor Falls back to back of each other I realized... the idea of Missy turning good had been hinted at THE ENTIRE TIME! One of the first things she says to the Doctor is "I want my friend back" and at the time on first watch, I assumed this to be a lie, some sort of trick, I didn't think she actually meant what she said but rewatching that with the context that she would later turn good I realized she actually meant it, she wasn't quite on the path to turning good yet but she later went on to help Clara multiple times with seemingly no ulterior motive other than trying to earn the Doctor's trust back. We also found out that Missy was the one who gave Clara the number for the TARDIS phone in the first place, she's the reason the Doctor and Clara ended up together. So yeah... the hints are rather subtle on first viewing because you're expecting her to do something evil the entire time but on rewatch you realize she actually is trying to change, slowly, over the course of three seasons.

For example The 1st Master had the Autons and The Mistress had the Cybermen. However,the plroblem with Missy is that she was doing it all for The Doctor who we know will never say ''yes'' to a scheme like that. Wouldn't it have been much cooled if Missy just handed control over to a previous incarnation of her's? Also if The Master had his/her own evil plan that DIDN'T involve another Doctor Who villainous race or some other grander thing that the master is involved in then WHY aren't people talking about it? Well I guess there's the Doctor Who movie where The Master hijacks the TARDIS's Eye of Harmony. Why can't The Master have more ''master plans'' like that??? Remember how The Doctor said that his/her name was a promise he/she made? Why can't The Master do something like THAT!?!? If not, then The Master's name should instead be changed to The Oppressor since that name fits him/her a lot better given what he/she does to people and The Doctor. My point is, what The Master SHOULD be doing is something that fulfills his promise name ''Master''. THE FRICKING DICTIONARY HAS BETTER CONCEPTS FOR WHAT ''THE MASTER'' SHOULD BE DOING. Don't give us a story about him/her trying to rule something make him/her already rule something. He/She should be owning a mansion/space station with dozens of servants under him/her, a school/education place where he/she is the authority, a religious/fanatical organization that he/she should be the leader of, and IF The Master did have ''companions'' make them servants/slaves who obey & follow him/her for a variety of personal reasons and the only reason why The Doctor(s) would be ''foiling his/her plan(s)'' is because they see it, or the way The Master does it, as wrong. This not only allows The Master to live up to the name but also does something completely new for this type of character. And if The Master would be revealed to be behind some great scheme that an entire series had been building up to like the ''Vote Saxon'', or the Pandorica it would be for revenge because The Doctor had been ruining his/her ''peaceful & kind'' rule. This intrigue plot not only makes sense but part of this plan would be to go back to ruling somewhere else but not before making sure that The Doctor knows what it's like to keep someone from fulfilling their promise. The Doctor stopped him/her so now he/she is going to stop The Doctor. And if the BBC is never going to do something like THAT then we might as well call The Doctor's ''nemesis'' The Oppressor.

    The Master can so easily get away with a lot more things than the Doctor (including weird powers like body snatching) because it is mentioned he/she was at school with the Doctor. I just believe that the Master payed more attention and is therefore able to choose his appearance on regenerating whereas it just happens at random with the Doctor. Also, I'm kind of an Eric Roberts Master fan as I am just delighted that such a big actor was willing to take on this iconic role. And he's actually the scariest version of the character in my opinion.
    Also, talking about Death In Heaven, I like the little moment where Missy mentions that the Cyberman army is her present for the Doctor's birthday and he turns to Clara with a look as if saying: "Well, you never gave me anything," while it is obviously not the moment to talk about that. The Doctor stopped him/her so now he/she is going to stop The Doctor. And if the BBC is never going to do something like THAT then we might as well call The Doctor's ''nemesis'' The Oppressor.

    As much as Missy's first plan is super convoluted, I love the plot point that she picked out a cute control freak and stuck her in the Doctor's timeline when his morale was lowest cuz she knew that was a recipe for a toxic, co-dependent disaster of a friendship.

  • @charlestownsend9280

    Missy's plan in death in heaven wasn't a prank but is to break the doctor by killing his friends, converting his dead friends and every human in history into cybermen and then giving him the army he needs to never let her or anyone else do such an action ever again. It's not that bad a plan really and whatever the doctor does he loses, he either kills missy (which he almost did if not for the brigader randomly shooting her), actually taken the army and used it (proving that he is no different from her), destroyed the army (committing genocide, not the first time though, especailly when it comes to the cybermen) or what actually happened (losing a companion and badly damaging a relationship with another one, which if moffet know when to leave companions behind would have been when she left the show, but like with amy and rory he didn't). So with that goal in mind it does make some sense and if not for cyber brig randomly having control over himself for no explained reason, it would have worked.

    You know quite of few of these wouldn't have gone down so well if the Doctor had never shown up.
    If the Doctor never showed up in Survival, he'd just eventually turn into one of those cat things. In Utopia, he would eventually die at the end of the universe, in the Doctor Falls, he would have just have fallen into the Black Hole with his army of Cybermen.

      To be honest. For me, The Master always seemed to be piggy-back riding on minions that could stand alone in their own episodes. I personally love the Master as a villain despite their very clear and present flaws. Here's my ranking of the TV Masters (additionally, 9-7 are on one distinct level, 6-4 on a level above that, and 3-1 on the highest level):
    9. Geoffrey Beevers
    8. Peter Pratt
    7. John Simm
    6. Sacha Dhawan
    5. Anthony Ainley
    4. Derek Jacobi
    3. Eric Roberts
    2. Michelle Gomez
    1. Roger Delgado
    And my favorite Master stories are The Mind of Evil, Frontier in Space, Planet of Fire, Survival, Utopia (though not the further two episodes of that three-parter), and Dark Water/Death in Heaven.

    You're right The Master is not a good villain...because he's not a villain. Now what I mean by this is aside from the theatrics of the character they don't actually fit the vaudeville villain archetype at all. Even as early back as the Delgado era The Master always came off as more of a frenemy than an enemy. The Master in my eyes has always been a dark reflection/foil of what the Doctor could be, he/she is a character who clearly has the potential to do so much good but instead causes chaos and strife. So I disagree in this idea that the Master is some lame and obsolete pantomime villain but rather a friend of the Doctor's playing the part of the villain. The character has undergone several complex changes since their inception in the 70s and Missy's latest character arc in Season 10 is proof of that. If Missy does survive/regenerate I will agree with you that they can't go on like this and thus I think that the dynamic of the character needs to change. The Master is too dependant on the Doctor's existence and should develop into something more e.g. an Anti-Hero, Anti-Villain or just anything to change the dynamic of the character. Moffat laid the groundwork for this in Season 10 and it would be a bloody waste if Chibnall just ignored it, I'd rather the character stay dead than that happening.

    The War Master series does great things for the Master, with The Sky Man and pretty much all of Master of Callous being top notch stories in my opinion, but I feel like one of the Masters best stories ALONGSIDE the Doctor might be The Destination Wars, we get the First Doctor vs the First Master (Played by James Dreyfus) and the Masters plan nearly works, he only fails because he couldn't have predicted that the Doctor would have had such an unreliable TARDIS, and that Barbara could help Ian break through the Masters control.

    I feel like they often do really samey stories for the Master, without exploring what the character could be. Honestly, if they ever made the Master as smart as their supposed to be, the show would be over.
    For all the governments and institutions the Master infiltrates, why does the Doctor always seem to encounter the Master towards the beginning of their plans? Why not after the Master has set themself up as the leader of a galactic supercluster?
    Two faves:
    Delgado: original, calm, and polite. I see him as one of the most pragmatic, although they sometimes portrayed him in ways that seem a bit contradictory.
    Missy: most mature, and therefore most deadly. Seemingly unconcerned with conquest, and, therefore, extremely unpredictable. Also, magnetic as hell. 😎

    I find that if you watch 'The Doctor Falls' then 'Death in heaven' (following the masters chronology) the story seems to be that the Doctors Speech about being Kind did in fact effect the Master, and when he Regenerated into Missy, the mission/plan from then was to be the Doctors friend.
    1) Find the perfect Companion to fix what happened to Bill.
    2) Create an Army for the Doctor... thats what he needed...
    3) Defeat/Control the Cyber-men.
    The Problem with this plan is that she is also Mad.

    To be fair to Survival, comparing the Master's plan in Terror of the Autons to it isn't exactly fair because in Survival, he's not really trying to come up with the best way to defeat the Doctor. He's on his back leg, plotting desperately to try to get back to our world by any means necessary, having to do with the impediment of the bloodlust that being on this world gave him- a bloodlust that feeds into his need for revenge on the Doctor. He's not plotting power, he's plotting escape, and his best interests are clouded in his mind. I'm not sure if I explained that coherently, but that's always been my take.

      Whereas I agree that there aren't enough lawful Gallifreyans helping the doctor (it's unfortunate that every Castellan is a villain except Spandrell; and that the betrayal of Hedin in Arc of Infinity was a bullshit twist plotted for shock factor), I also think that there aren't enough major villains of the same race, besides Rassilon (unfortunately buried in Hell Bent through bullshit writing) and the Master (presumably dead). The Rani is interesting in the way she's a neutral evil scientist (then a welcome diversion from domination seeking chars), the Monk isn't inherently evil just irresponsible and hedonistic, as for Morbius he's a high-stake villain who spits on the time lord non-interference policy (and he's pretty fearsome at that, as his malevolent charisma allows him to raise armies of billions of soldiers).

The Master was made to be the Doctor's nemesis, the only reason that he exist is to be a pain in the Doctor's back-side. The Master is definitely the weakest recurring villain the show has when it comes to motivation and story, but I don't think that means he's a bad villain or by any means the worst. I think his/her performances and the chemistry the actors who play him/her have with the Doctor make up for the writer's shortcomings when it comes to The Master. To me the order of the recurring Doctor Who villains go, from best to worst: the Daleks, the Cybermen, the Weeping Angels, The Master, the Silence, and finally, the dumbest villains in Doctor Who history, the Zygons. I hated everything about the Zygons, from their character design to their motivations. Seriously, aside from some outstanding performances from by Jenna Coleman and Ingrid Oliver the Zygons were terrible villains.
    Edit: If I had to pick a favorite Master story, it would have to be either John Simm's appearance in the two part Christmas Special, The Sound of Drums and The Last of the Time Lords, or Roger Delgado's first appearance in Terror of the Autons. Though his death would later be undone by the series through Missy, at the time I felt no matter how rocky his character's story in between, he had entered and exited the show on a high note. And then they went and took a big dump on it in the Series 10 two part finale, World Enough and Time and The Doctor Falls. I was fine with the Missy character and was even starting to like her, but the fact that the show made both incarnations go out like a little bitch makes my blood boil. After decades of finding ways to cheat death on and off screen, they give us what feels like a permanent end to the character (and not a good one) and we know it's not gonna fucking stick cause it didn't the countless other times they faked us out.

    My favorite master stories aren't even Doctor Who stories. Derek Jacobi's war Master audiodrama is by far the BEST Master story.

    If you get the book the woman who lived it says on the bit about missy that the master shot her with a full blast from his laser screwdriver that would, HE THOUGHT, prevent her regenerating again

    The Master is balance to The Doctor. As long as one survives, so will the other.

    I actually really like Eric’s portrayal of the master, he’s got a really sinister look about him and plus it was the 90s after all. And about the American accent, I’ve always just thought well it is a body snatch so he will likely speak in the hosts voice and accent.

    Great video. I actually agree with everything you said about the John Simm Master, but I still love him! He’s kinda my big childhood villain. And since I didn’t watch the trailers and avoided news for series ten, I actually didn’t get the reveal spoiled which made me like The Doctor Falls arc more. I do think it was a mistake to just kill Missy off without letting her do her own thing. Also I forgot about that story when he hid in the statue. Hilarious!

      He didn't just hide in the statue, it was his bloody TARDIS and the long term plan was to gain access to the Source on Traken which would have given him loads of power! It certainly gave him enough to steal Tremas body and that was only residual energy!
