Excellent video. No BS. Understands why viewers are coming to visit. Your rationale for the cause makes 100% sense. I lose oil. Between oil changes I lose about 0.5-0.75 quarts of oil. It’s not going to the ground, not my tranny or my coolant. It has something to do with the PCV system on these engines. I am not surprised at all to have someone tell me I have oil in my intake. FYI if it’s helpful to anyone…My symptoms started last night on a highway around 55mph. The “Service Stabilitrac” light came on. When I got up to around 50 MPH it felt like the tranny was shifting rapidly and I had little power. If I stayed at 40mph or under I could at least get myself home. So, no ABS light but the service message and the yellow “Traction” light was on. I’ll go clean as instructed and report back on the results. Mine is a 2017 Traverse. UPDATE: PLEASE READ BECAUSE THIS MIGHT HELP YOU!!! I cleaned my Mass Air Flow Sensor and Throttle body really good. It was gunked up pretty bad with stick oil residue. I also replaced my air filter. Overall, there is a very noticable improvement in performance. However, this is not the problem or cause of the Stabilitrak issue. I bought a Z13s and pulled the code C0161-00 "Electronic Brake Control Module - Antilick Braking System Brake Switch Circuit". So this points me to my brake pedal. I tested my brake lights in the dark so I can easily see what they do when I press the brake pedal. Every now and again, the brake lights stay on when I release the pedal. After furthur review, this code will appear often on people who drive with both feet. In other words, if you go over 6MPH with the crake pedal pressed for more than like 5 seconds, this code appears and teh Stabilitrak system is disabled. In short, it now makes sense that I need to replace my brake pedal sensor switch and make sure it is calibrated properly. Here's hoping I can do it without having a tool only a dealer has. I'll come back for another update. (sorry, my comment is long...but hopefully helpful!). Update 2: My issue was the Brake Pedal Position switch. Too much play. I did the same to mine has alote oil in it. I even took off the throttle body to clean it good. The only thing I forgot to look at was the mass flow sensor but I'm sure if there was an issue with that it would light up that more often. On this video he says the gas pedal has a sensor. Are you referring to that or the brake? I didn't know there were sensors under the pedals. I wouldn't be surprised it the pedal. I guess mine sticks and I don't even know so it triggers in stabilitrak mode. I'll look into that and appreciate the information.
A loss of up to a quart of oil in 3000 miles is average. This is normal. Having some oil in the intake is also normal with these new set ups. Maintenance is required to keep the intake clean. Most quick lubes offer the intake and fuel system cleaning service that is easy enough to do yourself by following the instructions on the product. If you are car illiterate, I recommend getting help from someone who knows the difference between a standard and phillips screwdriver.
That is a breather tube for the pcv system that's attached to the air intake tube. Clean air must be available to the crankcase, thus why it's located after the air filter. On the other valve cover, is your fixed orifice pcv. (No valve inside) On these engines they had tiny pcv holes, holes that can clog up easily. Even when you change the oil regularly. So you have clean air coming into the crankcase on one side of the engine, and blowby getting sucked out thru engine vacuum on the other valve cover. Now, if that pcv valve is clogged, your breather tube has now become a blowby tube. Shooting oil into the intake tube where the throttle body now consumes it. So yes keep your throttle body clean at all times. If it is dirty, suspect clogged pcv valve. Fix it at the source. The valve should be drilled out as others have mentioned in the comments. But a quick fix, remove the pcv tube and blast some compressed air thru the pcv valve. This should clear that valve and open it again so it'll work properly. Do not put a catch can on the breather section of this system. The catch can is made for the pcv side of the system. It's designed to catch oil that made its way passed the pcv. In conclusion, if you have oil in throttle body, u have a plugged pcv valve. Replace valve and clean throttle body, it's only 4 bolts, remove it and clean with an old toothbrush. I'm having similar issues with 2012 Traverse. Engine locked up at 120k with only a few codes.Bought another engine with 61k miles. bought reman. ECM and re-programed by mechanic. All kinds of codes and reduced power. Cleaned as you did but similar codes. Ordered different reman. ECM and currently awaiting arrival. Found your video after and have never seen a more profesional presentation! You are gifted and should continue your style of explaining remedies as you did this one. Great video. You may not still own this car but for those that have one or the GMC Acadia and Buick Enclave somthing I recently learned is these cars have GDI engines. It stands for gasoline direct injection. Bascially it means gas is injected directly into the combustion chamber and never touches the back of the valves and this creates carbon build up on the valves which causes engine performance issues. You can spray GDI valve cleaner into the air intake beyond the mass air sensor to help clean the valves.

Thanks Dude, I forgot about throttle body, I cleaned it out on my Chevy Trailblazer. I am having this issue on my 2007 Escalade. I will give this a try
changing out the pcv valve eliminate the oil going in the throttle body. before you install the new one you need to drill out the top and bottom holes in the new pcv valve making them a tad bit bigger for better suction. GMC admit there was a flaw in the early models suv with the 3.6 engine.
I tried all of the issues you pointed out...lol. What finally fixed mine was replacing the gas pedal assembly. It has 2 sensors. Even if only goes bad, the whole assembly has to be replaced. Been running great since. But FYI, the stabilitrac issue could be 100 issues in these GM vehicles. My auto start and cruise control quit working (which also set off the service stabilitrac light), I changed the brake light switch behind the brake pedal, fixed both problems. Also, do not attempt to put more gasoline in your tank after the pump shuts off, this will mess up your fuel vapor sensor and you will have to replace it. What happens when it goes bad is when you fill up your tank with gas, your car won't start. it does but it takes a couple of minutes. Ir you need to press the pedal all the way to the floor. It will run fine fuel wise until the next time you gas up until you replace that sensor. I learned this the hard way. Now my 2013 Chevy Traverse runs like a Chevy should.
With this traverse there are a ton of issues unfortunatly not related to one single fix. Traverse life Glad you fixed it, I had to do the same thing when my accel pedal sensor "died"
First of all there's not one fix for this situation I've been an auto tech for 41 years and video is good advice good advice video but you have to pull codes and do your homework You're fix me not work for other people and that's not a speed sensor that's the throttle position 2 sensor. After cleaning your throttle body You need to have a scanner with capabilities to do a throttle body relearn. If you don't have one you will have to drive it until the PCM does it's thing.
Lol 😆. “Runs like a Chevy should”. How should it run? My 2012 Buick Enclave has been nothing but problems since day one. I’ll be hard pressed to ever consider another GM product ever again after the CONSTANT repairs. If I weren’t a DIY mechanic, my Enclave would probably have sunk us financially.

Great video. I will do this on my 2014 Acadia for the traction control and stabilink light. Makes sense. Last year I lost engine power on my 2010 Mariner. After researching, I sprayed a throttle body cleaner into throttle body. Worked for about a year. When I do this on both vehicles, I will be sure to use a cloth to scrub inside throttle body, the snorkel and both sides of the butterfly. You're right, do it yourself and save big bucks. Also, change your own oil.
IMO, very very good instructions. I had this happen at 160k miles. I cleaned everything, but in the end, i had to replace the throttle body. Part alone was cheaper than the labor to replace it at the dealer. But it just happened again today with 260k miles. This time with a P0221 code. I'm going to do everything you mentioned and hopefully i won't need to replace another throttle body. Theere is another fix that involves drilling out the PCV valve, which is supposed to reduce the oil accumulating in the hose to the mass flow air sensor. I did this and noticed a big difference every time i changed the air filter. Search on youtube for it.
What did you find out? Did you drill out the PCV valve? I have a 2012 traverse and it’s locking up in me. I’m currently cleaning the throttle body right now. It’s dirty but I have a feeling this is not the cause of my issues. (I’m 47 years old women who knows what I read and learn in UA-cam 🤷♀️) Since my divorce years ago I’ve had to fix washers, dryers, hot water tanks, and a few things on the Traverse and raise 4 kids. So any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated! 😉

Another issue was brake position sensor that I bought for $10, installed and paid Dealership $100 at the time to calibrate. Worked great for 100k miles and I got the stabilitrak error again around 265k. Just cleaned throttle body and it's good again.

I never would have associated the Service Traction Control error to the Throttle Body or Throttle Position Sensor. Stupid programming in my opinion. I did this Throttle Body cleaning yesterday and so-far our Traverse is running fine again. I didn't actually have any throttle body or carburetor cleaner handy so I used starting fluid. I cleared the error codes and we're good to go. Thank you for this video!
Installing an oil catch can will solve your oil in the air intake issue... Something else that causes the stabilitrak light to come on is the brake pedal position sensor which is located on the brake pedal. Just wanted to mention that cuz I've been having a lot of issues with my 2015 traverse and it's very frustrating!!

When you move the butterfly valve on the throttle body with your finger you are making the gear inside the sensor move the engine that is inside the entire housing. When the shaft that moves the butterfly gets misaligned with the engine inside the housing the entire throttle body is not calibrated. If you saw a rebuild or replacement of the throttle position sensor there's a slot where the shaft has to fit exactly. Some break inside without anyone moving the butterfly valve at all, they just wear out. This is what causes many of the driver information system displays to show stabilitrac, traction control fault, and traction control faults, as well as reduced power mode on GM vehicles. There are thousands of GM vehicle owners who have changed their throttle position sensors and fixed the problems mentioned above. Please read the GM service advisory and pay attention to the reassembly instructions. The little slotted part on the cover MUST be lined up correctly or the part won't work right. This is the piece that gets messed up when you move the butterfly valve while cleaning the throttle body on the engine. Thanks man! Got a '07 Avalanche that does the same thing, even the stupid limp mode! Learned to clean that, but never thought of clearing the code to get out of limp mode! BTW, at least in the truck engines, there is going from 8 to 4 cylinders to save fuel thing. Brother-in-law is a GM mech. told me that's what is causing the oil to blow back in to the MAF sensor and throttle body.
Gotcha, yea on the 2011 traverse there is not power saving mode.........unless the alternator is going dead or the stabilitrak codes kick in and try to kill you on the highway

It's your pcv valve that's blowing that oil through there, watch the video where they drill and enlarge the holes because they get clogged 👍🏽👌🏽 but great video none the less .
*@whosej20 This also happens when you jack up the vehicle on an angle and if you have never ever cleaned the throttle body of oil, it will do this too. I cleaned it once when I was changing out the spark plug YEARS ago but never since. When I finally go to replace "MY STRUTS" both front at the same time, the vehicle was on an angle and maybe some little oil made it through a stupid passage because, I know I tighten all clamps so the debris can't get in. Either I have to clean it again or just burn off the engine in due time. My custom air intake is easy to take off and put back on, but that stupid breather tube is a one-off custom length.*
I did the exact same things but I used engine degreaser to clean everything my throttle body looked brand new when done ! I even reached in and cleaned the phloom that throttle body attaches to ! Lots of oil on my rag as well put back together and runs new again
An "oil catch can" works much easier than cleaning the throttle body especially considering manually moving the butterfly. That in itself can creat problems with the sensor.
Chevy should be held to account for their pathetic system, I also now have this on my 2015 express 2500. When doing a search ALL GM vehicles with this system have issues. Will never buy a chevy again.
Hey guys check your wheel bearings they could be going out and causing a lot of stress on the transmission and possibly causing your transmission to slip. I replace my wheel bearing and abs sensor and it fixed the problem
Thanks for saving me the research! Cleaned it up(known to get dirty, bad design) and then fixed the wiring getting cut where it hooks into the trans there right under the air box. Idiotic designs all around from GM.
I had the same problem on my Cadillac XTs traction control stabilizer reduce power and limp mode. after research it was determined that it was the mass airflow sensor after replacing mass airflow sensor it resolved all my problems. The Cadillac XTS has the same engine and same type transmission I think your transmission is a 6T75 but same concept.

I just got done changing spark plugs and engine filter on 17 traverse and when I went to start I got these error messages! I thought I screwed things up. I will try cleaning the throttle in the morning . Fingers crossed.
most i have found did have oil in the throttle and it did fix the problem. BUT i have one here now and EVERYTHING been replaced and still has problem. with same code for throttle/Pedal P2138 The fuse box was loose at the 2 bolts. Tighten that by cutting a washer in half. Place half the washer under the bolt head then tighten back down. The bolts like to free spin
Do not push the butterfly valve. It is electric you push it you break all the gears it is not a manual butterfly valve turn the key, do not turn it on press the gas, and let the throttlebody open on its own.
It looks like my butterfly valve is misaligned. I haven’t touched it (cleaned it yet) mine it’s straight up and down. It’s at angle. I can see where it use to be aligned “correctly” I’m guessing. Any suggestions?
I literally just replaced spark plugs on coil pack valve cover gaskets spark plug seal rings plenum gasket and cleaned the hell out of throttle body along with replaced the air filter and cleaning mass air flow sensor on my 2011 traverse. Runs great, but I still have air in my power steering, which I'll I get that taken care of in the morning. What a pain in the ass

If you don't have one you will have to drive it until the PCM does it's thing.
Lol 😆. “Runs like a Chevy should”. How should it run? My 2012 Buick Enclave has been nothing but problems since day one. I’ll be hard pressed to ever consider another GM product ever again after the CONSTANT repairs. If I weren’t a DIY mechanic, my Enclave would probably have sunk us financially.

Great video. I will do this on my 2014 Acadia for the traction control and stabilink light. Makes sense. Last year I lost engine power on my 2010 Mariner. After researching, I sprayed a throttle body cleaner into throttle body. Worked for about a year. When I do this on both vehicles, I will be sure to use a cloth to scrub inside throttle body, the snorkel and both sides of the butterfly. You're right, do it yourself and save big bucks. Also, change your own oil.
Check your battery, mine was bad and started showing crazy codes! Fixed this issue.
IMO, very very good instructions. I had this happen at 160k miles. I cleaned everything, but in the end, i had to replace the throttle body. Part alone was cheaper than the labor to replace it at the dealer. But it just happened again today with 260k miles. This time with a P0221 code. I'm going to do everything you mentioned and hopefully i won't need to replace another throttle body. Theere is another fix that involves drilling out the PCV valve, which is supposed to reduce the oil accumulating in the hose to the mass flow air sensor. I did this and noticed a big difference every time i changed the air filter. Search on youtube for it.
What did you find out? Did you drill out the PCV valve? I have a 2012 traverse and it’s locking up in me. I’m currently cleaning the throttle body right now. It’s dirty but I have a feeling this is not the cause of my issues. (I’m 47 years old women who knows what I read and learn in UA-cam 🤷♀️) Since my divorce years ago I’ve had to fix washers, dryers, hot water tanks, and a few things on the Traverse and raise 4 kids. So any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated! 😉
@@thatswhatshesaid6326 my issue was throttlebody (replaced with new because of the electronics). Another issue was brake position sensor that I bought for $10, installed and paid Dealership $100 at the time to calibrate. Worked great for 100k miles and I got the stabilitrak error again around 265k. Just cleaned throttle body and it's good again.
Btw, I drilled out the pcv valve, too. It helped reduce milkshake

I never would have associated the Service Traction Control error to the Throttle Body or Throttle Position Sensor. Stupid programming in my opinion. I did this Throttle Body cleaning yesterday and so-far our Traverse is running fine again. I didn't actually have any throttle body or carburetor cleaner handy so I used starting fluid. I cleared the error codes and we're good to go. Thank you for this video!
Installing an oil catch can will solve your oil in the air intake issue... Something else that causes the stabilitrak light to come on is the brake pedal position sensor which is located on the brake pedal. Just wanted to mention that cuz I've been having a lot of issues with my 2015 traverse and it's very frustrating!!

When you move the butterfly valve on the throttle body with your finger you are making the gear inside the sensor move the engine that is inside the entire housing. When the shaft that moves the butterfly gets misaligned with the engine inside the housing the entire throttle body is not calibrated. If you saw a rebuild or replacement of the throttle position sensor there's a slot where the shaft has to fit exactly. Some break inside without anyone moving the butterfly valve at all, they just wear out. This is what causes many of the driver information system displays to show stabilitrac, traction control fault, and traction control faults, as well as reduced power mode on GM vehicles. There are thousands of GM vehicle owners who have changed their throttle position sensors and fixed the problems mentioned above. Please read the GM service advisory and pay attention to the reassembly instructions. The little slotted part on the cover MUST be lined up correctly or the part won't work right. This is the piece that gets messed up when you move the butterfly valve while cleaning the throttle body on the engine. Thanks man! Got a '07 Avalanche that does the same thing, even the stupid limp mode! Learned to clean that, but never thought of clearing the code to get out of limp mode!
BTW, at least in the truck engines, there is going from 8 to 4 cylinders to save fuel thing. Brother-in-law is a GM mech. told me that's what is causing the oil to blow back in to the MAF sensor and throttle body.
Gotcha, yea on the 2011 traverse there is not power saving mode.........unless the alternator is going dead or the stabilitrak codes kick in and try to kill you on the highway

It's your pcv valve that's blowing that oil through there, watch the video where they drill and enlarge the holes because they get clogged 👍🏽👌🏽 but great video none the less .
*@whosej20 This also happens when you jack up the vehicle on an angle and if you have never ever cleaned the throttle body of oil, it will do this too. I cleaned it once when I was changing out the spark plug YEARS ago but never since. When I finally go to replace "MY STRUTS" both front at the same time, the vehicle was on an angle and maybe some little oil made it through a stupid passage because, I know I tighten all clamps so the debris can't get in. Either I have to clean it again or just burn off the engine in due time. My custom air intake is easy to take off and put back on, but that stupid breather tube is a one-off custom length.*

I did the exact same things but I used engine degreaser to clean everything my throttle body looked brand new when done ! I even reached in and cleaned the phloom that throttle body attaches to ! Lots of oil on my rag as well put back together and runs new again
Be careful with engine degreaser, that stuff usually should be followed with a respray of water to clean off the remnants
After a week it started again so I just changed the entire throttle body new and it seemed to work just fine now
Make sure you guys change the pcv valve in the back I guarantee you it is clogged up causing the oil in the Intake inlet tube

Connect an oil catch can to the PC valve to minimize that oil build up. Oil catch can on Amazon.

An "oil catch can" works much easier than cleaning the throttle body especially considering manually moving the butterfly. That in itself can creat problems with the sensor.

Catch can is not for breather side. Its for pcv side for oil thats gotten past pcv
Chevy should be held to account for their pathetic system, I also now have this on my 2015 express 2500. When doing a search ALL GM vehicles with this system have issues. Will never buy a chevy again.
Agreed, been huge Chevy fan for 43 years and this 2019. Chevy Silverado Texas edition has had major issues and I’m on,y at 63000 miles… eff Gm motors
Hey guys check your wheel bearings they could be going out and causing a lot of stress on the transmission and possibly causing your transmission to slip. I replace my wheel bearing and abs sensor and it fixed the problem

Thanks for saving me the research! Cleaned it up(known to get dirty, bad design) and then fixed the wiring getting cut where it hooks into the trans there right under the air box. Idiotic designs all around from GM.

Thats why i have an oil catch can- before catch can - i see oil puddle in the intake track. After carch can was installed - no more oil .
I had the same problem on my Cadillac XTs traction control stabilizer reduce power and limp mode. after research it was determined that it was the mass airflow sensor after replacing mass airflow sensor it resolved all my problems. The Cadillac XTS has the same engine and same type transmission I think your transmission is a 6T75 but same concept.

I just got done changing spark plugs and engine filter on 17 traverse and when I went to start I got these error messages! I thought I screwed things up. I will try cleaning the throttle in the morning . Fingers crossed.

most i have found did have oil in the throttle and it did fix the problem. BUT i have one here now and EVERYTHING been replaced and still has problem. with same code for throttle/Pedal P2138 The fuse box was loose at the 2 bolts. Tighten that by cutting a washer in half. Place half the washer under the bolt head then tighten back down. The bolts like to free spin

Do not push the butterfly valve. It is electric you push it you break all the gears it is not a manual butterfly valve turn the key, do not turn it on press the gas, and let the throttlebody open on its own.
I was wondering why he didnt press it to show us when he was saying u can press it with ur finger..
Can use a scan tool with throttle position function to open it electronically
It looks like my butterfly valve is misaligned. I haven’t touched it (cleaned it yet) mine it’s straight up and down. It’s at angle. I can see where it use to be aligned “correctly” I’m guessing. Any suggestions?

I literally just replaced spark plugs on coil pack valve cover gaskets spark plug seal rings plenum gasket and cleaned the hell out of throttle body along with replaced the air filter and cleaning mass air flow sensor on my 2011 traverse. Runs great, but I still have air in my power steering, which I'll I get that taken care of in the morning. What a pain in the ass

So I've watched a tone of these of course I have the same problem. Now it seems like you guys might b on track. But if the sensor is being affected cleaning the throttle body is just a step. How can I clean the sensor which is what has signaled things to shut down...??
