I hear you on the nickel and dime, "here's a base version and later on we'll put out another with all the features you wanted to begin with." Thanks for calling that out and hopefully more people will call that out too.
@@nathanbrand1sig is actually pretty good about this stuff. almost everything they release these days is optic ready. and they release upgraded versions very quickly, so you don't have to wait very long.
I bought the DWX C when it first came out. Didn't want a rail or ambi safety and I prefer direct mount. The slide will accommodate a full size red dot, so I had it cut for an RMR. Zero malfunctions to date after 1000's of rounds and it runs like a dream. Couldn't be more satisfied.
I am of the same mind as well. In that I prefer single sided thumb safeties and rail less pistols. And I still prefer Irons as well, especially for a carry piece. And as you said, you can get the slide machined for a direct mount of an RDS. Doing so isn't too costly and you get a solid mount for your optic of choice. Plus I like how direct mounting really gets the optic nice and low on the slide.
Great chatting with you tonight at Elliott’s , looking forward to upcoming content on some of the goodies you picked up! You two Keep up the great work!
I don't really care about this pistol all that much being both left handed and poor - but it was worth watching this video just to hear your 'I'm not Walther Conkrite' comment. That was gold.
Another lefty here! Honest outlaw was dead on regarding The three things he said were missing from the gun. Optic cut, ambidextrous safety, and rail mount. I have a full size DWX which eliminates two of those issues, and I can get the slide cut once I get around to it.
Now that I have 5,000 rounds through mine, I feel confident claiming that it's my favorite handgun. This and my DW Guardian in 45 have been my EDCs for some time now. I know I'm in the minority, but I like the lack of a rail, optic cut, and ambi safety. I prefer a hand held light over a WML, so the lack of a rail is both weight saving and makes the gun more svelte. The lack of an optic cut means that I get to choose what optic I have it cut for. I prefer direct mounts from a potential failures standpoint. I'm right handed, so I don't miss the left handed safety. Plus I've had ambi safeties disengage getting in and out of the car with the seatbelt. Even though a good holster will cover the trigger fully, there is a certain level of pucker factor that goes into carrying cocked and unlocked, especially on a gun without a grip safety.
You are totally correct with it having an ambi-safety (I'm a lefty), cut-out for an optic and light rail forward. This is a beauty but costs more than the Competitive version without the three features in a Defensive Carry gun. Also, the next version(s) coming out with an optic mount is why it's better to wait for the second generation on this style of pistol. Great video Chris.
Thank you for calling them out! I am sick and tired of gun manufacturers not having optics ready versions at launch in 2024, especially for a gun at this price point. From my perspective and other buyers, it comes off as a pure money grab.
The DWX Compact's unique features for carry definitely caught my attention, and it's great to see how it holds up under various conditions. Solid work!
shout out from DSM. props your comment about manufacturers making slick versions then MOS versions being bad for the consumer. One of the few things about the... well entire category of businesses in the 2A space that bothers me. Glock 43x / 43x MOS comes to mind. Not that everyone uses those things, but the option too should be available straight away ESPECIALLY for EDC models. this is all my opinion of course.
100% agree on the grip texture...really wish it had conventional checkering. Not such a big deal when actually shooting, but more so when getting that initial purchase out of the holster.
no optic cut no light rail no ambi safety makes sense for a 1.0 version that's cheaper and easier to manufacture looks like it shoots really nicely though. guess I'll have to wait for the 2.0
Totally agree Chris! DW, listen to Chris!! Better front and back strap checkering, ambi safety, light rail, optic ready (no plates please), delete the stupid red trigger (Chris mentioned different colors), and make the trigger guard bigger. If I could give DW a bit more advice: Make the barrel 4.25-4.4” long and V-port it. That barrel/slide length seems to be the sweet spot for 9mm’s to return to zero after recoil when properly sprung. If delivered, this could be the best all-around pistol ever made (ok, the trigger color doesn’t really matter 😏).
The DWX Compact seems to hold up well under pressure with 1000 rounds, but I'm curious about those distinct features setting it apart from its counterpart.
Thank you. I have been waiting for this one. Waiting for the red dot cut version of this to buy. I agree it should have come that was in the first version.
If I’m going to spend nearly 2K on a double-stack 1911, it should AT LEAST be optics ready. For that money I might as well get a Staccato C2 which is optics-ready or pay hundreds less for a Shadow 2 Compact which is probably the best double-single action on the market. It’s hard to know who this gun is for when it’s literally stuck between two better options.
That’s a fair point but from another perspective it’s the perfect combo of two stellar options especially if you have a Shadow 2 for home defense with a light and/or dot and you love the platform but gotta have that 1911 trigger
I’m very happy with the CZ Shadow 2 compact, DA/SA ( I feel that is VERY important for a carry gun, you don’t want to be stuffing around with cocking the hammer in a high stress / high stakes situation) with rail and an RMO cut slide for significantly less than HALF the price. I can’t outshoot the gun, and I don’t think the average shooter (thinking of you Mr Harrell) would ever be able to get significant improvement from a DWx.
Got to shoot the full size version I sold a friend, and I have to say I found it to be a phenomenal experience. Just what you’d expect from CZ! I do agree they did sort of drop the ball not producing an optics ready version. I’m not one who has made that transition yet, but there is no question it is the future. BTW, I know I’m n to always sugary sweet positive on all your videos, but please know I love your content and really refer you as the authority for review content today. Love your work! You’re definitely who I turn to first when I want the ins and outs on a new gun, and use your work when advising others on guns I haven’t been able to run myself. You’re definitely the best I’ve seen out there. Most thorough, comprehensive, objective and straight forward, so thank you for the work you do. Just wanted to put that across the range.
The lack of rail and no optics cut is a disappointment from the features side of things, but DAMN this thing looks the business. Might be my favorite new pistol from the aesthetics side of things.
ANR Holsters has their "Right Handed Quick Ship Appendix with Claw" holster available for the DWX series (full size and compact) start at 70 bucks and up (depending on how you configure it.
Like your video on The Dan Wesson especially the little note about the front sight having to work for the US government for most of my working career I had the opportunity to shoot with a number of the Leos and government agents there was one that was extremely different he filled the dovetail and then it was ground off and a channel machined in the top of the slide no sight
Hey Chris, have an idea for a post: speed of shooting. I like that the DWX can be fired in succession very quickly, according to the shooters skill. But like cars & trucks, speed costs money. How about a post of top 3 - 5 guns for speed by cost range using similar cost ranges to your previous comparisons? Maybe some tips and trade offs as well?
I’m assuming that the DWX was conceived initially in .40 S&W as a USPSA Limited or IPSC Standard Major gun. The 9mm SAO FS is general range gun but no real division to shoot in besides IDPA ESP. After all the hype , they didn’t really evolve the concept yet. I guess they’ll put out an OR FS version with a mag well and ambient safety - then it’s a USPSA LO gun. The compact seems like an unfinished project that exists in the same space as the Sig 210 Carry… an expensive sorta useful plinker gun collector kinda thing .
I agree that CZ should have offered optic ready model. I personally do not use optics, so doesnt effect me. Still, I acknowledge that in this day, the majority of people want an optic. Should have offered it both ways. I personally don't mount lights either but agree by the same reasoning it should have been offered with a rail. I own one and love it! I carry it in Brommeland Gunleather max con V made for a glock 17. It fits plenty well enough.
I have almost 1000 rounds through mine. It's stupid accurate even with cheap ammo. I had the slide cut for a RMRcc. Just make sure your sear spring is installed properly.
I'll agree that the DWX line should come optics ready for those who want it, they have the technology. For me however, I realized all my optics ready pistols have 2 things in common, they have an optic on them & the optic stays on them. If I buy a new optics ready pistol with the intent of adding an optic, I also buy a new optic for that pistol. That being said, after many days of deliberation, I sent out my DWX slide for milling, she now has a SRO mounted on top, & she'll stay that way.
I was very disappointed in mine. I didn’t keep it very long at all. Mine had a very loose and floppy safety that would “bounce” every time I fired a round. This would engage the safety most of the time. The very small safety was too small for me to easily keep my thumb on it to prevent this from happening. I bought a full sized DWX safety and filed it down to fit. This solved the sloppy safety problem. I then bought a CZ Shadow 2 compact as soon as it was released. Everything about the CZ compact was better than the Dan Wesson, except the trigger, so I sold the DWX compact and kept the shadow 2 compact.
Love mine! No optics cut doesn’t bother me at all. DSC can always do a DPO cut on it if I wanted but it shoots ropes as is so im leaving it alone. It gives my Staccato P a run for its money. These things are a smokin deal. Especially if you can find them lightly used. People crying about no optics are so annoying. 5 years ago everyone bitched about pistol optics and how they aren’t proven. Now everyone relies on them to shoot. The DWX compact model offers optics ready. If you really want a dot get that model. If you just want a lightning fast competition gun with simple irons the DWX is pretty hard to beat in its price point.
Man this thing is beautiful. The problem with only a dot is its much slower and depending how dark it is even impossible to get a good sight picture in dark conditions. I prefer tritium night sights with just the vials in the back, and a orange or yellow circle around the vial up front. Blacked out is great during the day but if you don't have a flashlight on the gun then you're SOL in night conditions.
@@LS1007 right, and so does my 34 with a blacked out rear. That’s what I said in my comment is that it’s super hard to get a sight picture, if at all possible at night without a light. No light rail cause there are folks like me that don't like a light rail. Different folks like what they like, and I am glad we all have options.
there is an optional extended safety but I haven't seen any ambi options. ANR Design does have holsters i haven't done much looking past them. you cant use standard 15rd compact mags because the plastic baseplate wont let the mag lock in you have to go to Henning and get their 20 bean base plates. I'm hoping someone will make a optional frame that uses P10C/P07 mags and has a rail since DW went with a chassis.
Ambi this or that, good or bad. Well, I'm a lefty. I learned how to click a safety off with my index. Try that. Too much money for what I need but if you got it and like it, do it.
I bought the DWX bc it was clean. I prefer direct mill over a plate system. IF they HAD to do a cut from the factory then RMR. Im on the fence about the rail. I see why people want it. I have several with it and several without. Ive found that guns I dont carry on me WML of course. CC? Not so much. I have a small torch for that. This is a CC pistol so it doesnt bother me. TBS, suprised the aftermarket hasnt found a way. The pistol is modular. Surely theres a way.
Just picked mine up last week. WOW it was hard to find but am super loving it already. A holster wasn’t easy to find but it’s getting made (Southern Trapper). A light and red dot on my carry just aren’t for me and I’m right handed so it checks all the boxes. Did you have any malfunctions while testing?
I don't have a 1911 but correct me if I'm wrong but can't it be carried half-cocked with the safety on? Also I stayed at a holiday inn last night so I'm kind of an expert 😂🎉
I'd rather have a pistol I can decock as compared to being decocked by the pistol. Personal preference. Hopefully Dan puts optic cuts on future iterations.
everybody ignores that the dwx compact released a few months before the S2c. For us that may seem like separate releases but CZ has to strategize how they drop product. With that said, would you release the non optic railed dwx and the s2c with optic and rail at the same time and market them to the same audiences? Or do you promote the dwx as a high end, niche, true-to-the-tradition style cz75/1911 as a way to carve out some marketshare and justify its price over the s2c? I still think they failed with the compact even though I want one.. it should maybe have at least been steel framed, or came with more than 2 mags
Apart from the lack of rail and optic cut, the DWX offers such a unique platform it is difficult to compare it directly to another handgun. I really like the DWX platform.

I'm hoping someone will make a optional frame that uses P10C/P07 mags and has a rail since DW went with a chassis.
Great gun definitely in a league of its own by right
Ambi this or that, good or bad.
What holster did you get for your DWX? Great video, as usual. Thanks
Kinda makes me think of the Kimber KDS9C and the Wilson Combat EDC X9.
Taran dropped a 43x we need to see a first shots with that!
hold on, they got rid of the grip safety? So what do they use for drop safety in place of that? I'm not seeing a trigger dongle.
Where is the obvious comparison to the shadow 2 Compact?
An optics cut and light rail would have me buying one!
I want this bad but the LACK of optic nor/or light rail keeps me from purchasing it rn. It’s beautiful for sure though.
Great review. Does the safety flick on and off like a 1911? My CZ TS takes a twist of grip and attention
Beautiful gun
Great review!
I am new to firearms. How would this compare to a Staccato? Or a Glock? Is it better? I’m still learning. Thank you
I don't have a 1911 but correct me if I'm wrong but can't it be carried half-cocked with the safety on? Also I stayed at a holiday inn last night so I'm kind of an expert 😂🎉
How do we get the safety on the other side for us left-handed shooter?
I'd rather have a pistol I can decock as compared to being decocked by the pistol. Personal preference. Hopefully Dan puts optic cuts on future iterations.
i just got one today… took it apart and i notice there is 4350 number dremmel on the barrel. is this normal?
Take a look at TISAS MAC9 DS bush less 1911,2011 for less than $1000!
If you can make a review on it! 👊🏾
Like your vids! 👏🏾
PSA daggers got a recessed barrel. I seen them for as low as 265
everybody ignores that the dwx compact released a few months before the S2c.

I really like the DWX platform.
...The Prodigy wants to know if its barrel qualifies...@ 2:28
