I love the..."but what did he beat" ARGUMENT.....the simple answer.....EVERYTHING IN FOOOKING FRONT OFF HIM!!!!! One off the greatest..boxing day tomorrow ...WISH he was still racing..... goose bumps watching these old films.... Thank-you for uploading ... regards mikey
Every year for as long as I can remember, I have watched the King George VI Chase which is my Boxing Day tradition. I have seen some great chasers win it, Best Mate, One Man and the Fellow. But there has been no so majestic and wonderful as Kauto Star, Without the greatest of my generation and probably one of the greatest of all time,
I just can't get over this race. Kauto Star is flawless, absoutely flawless. Seeing this race marks a fantastic decade of great sporting moments. Bring on the much anticipated 2010 Cheltenham Gold Cup with Denman and the rest.
Just to name a few off the top of My head, Denman, Imperial Commander, Long Run all 180+ rated chasers all Gold Cup winners all lost to Kauto. He was beating a 184 rated chaser in Long Run the previous years Gold Cup and King George winner twice at the age of 12 and a typical french bred peaks off at the age of 9. You can go through all the form figures in the world at Cheltenham the fact remains that Kauto was the first horse to win lose and regain the Gold Cup, Something...
why would anyone want to see such a great horse running in the national? that 4th king george has to be up there with the most breathtaking performances. sheer class
I'm not much of a hurdles or hunt racing fan. I've always been much more of a flat race fan. But I have taken the time to watch some of Kauto Star's races. Incredible!! The stamina this horse has. Still competing at the highest levels at 10 years old now. First or second in 21 of 24 lifetime hunt races. Remarkable. Just like Rite of Passage, because of his stamina from hurdles racing, winning the 2010 Ascot Gold Cup. I'll bet if Kauto Star ran in the Ascot Gold Cup, he'd win the race. JMO.
For me I would like to simply wish Kauto Star and his team the very best of luck on boxing day...I was their last year and he is incredibly beautiful to see in the flesh with such beaming eyes...... his best mate Denman had his heart problems and Kauto Star paced his stable up and down and didnt stop untill Denman come home... I could never comp[are these 2 because they are so different and so special at the same time. Lets enjoy that fact and embrace these amazing equines... ride like the wind
@foriamonlyahorse1 just laughed reading your comment (a few years later, mind). That old Grand National winning plodder :D as for Kauto, Boxing Day will never be the same for me without him. Never saw Arkle, not old enough. Kauto Star got me enthused about racing. I'd go so far as to say I loved him, and I got a tear in my eye when I watched this on the day.
Kauto was such a brilliant horse. Watch Ruby Walsh ride him, fantastic jockey and horseman. He could ride a wheelie bin to a win!!! The man is a master of his trade.
Arguably the greatest performance ever seen by a racehorse. Other than Denman they were all here, trying as best they could to beat the champ. Just a shame the gold cup was not won by him this year. I dont think ill see anything else as good in my lifetime that will keep me on the edge of my seat like him. One more KG then retirement into racing immortality i hope
" This is the best we have seen for a long time " Those words echo down the years for me as they announced the beginning of Arkles reign . The King is Dead ; Long Live the King .
@vixitrixalina Completely agree, Clive stated that it's 90% likely that he'll be retired now, he doesn't want him to die on the track like other greats have. He is a completely legend...from the moment I could understand racing, Kauto has been my favourite...I can remember watching him being 12 lengths in front, fall, Ruby remount, and him continue to within a short head of winning-with a fractured hock as well. 5 King Georges, 4 Betfair Chases, two Gold Cups, two Tingle Creeks...what a horse.
@foriamonlyahorse1 I think Im leaning more towards Desert Orchid around Kempton. He loved that track and would have been a tough nut to crack even for Kauto's ability. But if Kauto ran like he did in 2009 against Dessie who knows?! Both great great horses and I've been lucky enough to witness both....
I'm sure he'll retire now, Clive Smith doesn't want any harm to come to him on the racecourse and end like Best Mate and Dawn Run did. I burst into tears when He pulled up; at least two jockeys including Sam WC looked round to see him go, and the who grandstand forgot the race for just a moment to applaud the Great King's efforts. He was applauded when entering the parade ring too, and when he got onto the racecourse, and when he walked back to the stable. What a champion - simply the best.
The way Kauto has cruised around Kempton from 06-09 there is nothing to suggest he would mess up. He hit one in 06 but never looked like falling. Dessie was prone to the odd mistake as well. Either way nobody can dispute that both are in the top 5 horses of all time. Nobody can say that one is better than the other with any confidence.
awesome perfomance. there is no other word to descirbe this. if the gold cup was at kempton kauto would be a cert and likewise with denman if the gold cup was at newbury.
@BigPhil1982 all the horses you mentioned were fabulous, but i agree that Kauto is the best. remember, people, that racing has changed - courses change, rules change, trainers change and horses have different breeding. you can never full compare one horse to another. however, Kauto has won one more Gold Cup than Desert Orchid and the same number of KG's, plus 4 Betfairs etc. i personally think he's better. i'm 18, though, and never knew the others horses, Kauto is my generations hero
kauto is a legend, had it easy here though! Really hope the ground is heavy come gold cup time.. would love to see denman beat kauto, should be a great race, wish it was next week, not 3 months away!
Dessie did indeed do it in 5:50secs...on good to firm ground. He did it in 6:04 on good ground, this bettered by Kautos 5:57 on good ground. Dessie also did it in 6:12 on good to soft, this bettered by 6:05,6:07 and 6:09 by Kauto. The other Dessie time i could not find.
shame King Kauto had to crash out at Cheltenham - he didn't deserve that. but he had nothing to prove- he already won the race twice we already knew he was the best! he never really liked Cheltenham, but he comes to his brilliant best at Kempton, i think he is unbeatable around there! stick Denman and Imperial Comander in this race in 2010 and see them struggle! they go 2mile pace like the Tingle Creek but over 3miles. Kauto has the highest cruising speed ever! x
i just can't wait for Cheltenham! how can people still quiestion his ability?? this lovely horse has beaten record after record. he has won at 2 miles and 3 1/4 miles, i actually wouldnt be surprised if he ran the grand National! but i don't think anyone would enter him in that, he is too good to risk over those fences. all Kauto needs to do is come past the leader around the final corner- then there's no stopping him! bring on the GC!
They should build a statue of him at Kempton. Though i think they should build one at Kempton, he also has titles at Cheltenham and him and Denman should have statues there. Heck! They should rename the race - The William Hill King Kauto VI Chase. Though he has been retired, Kauto will always be the greatest to me. LONG LIVE KING KAUTO!
Does anyone know if Kauto will race again? I've not kept up to date with any racing news this year. Judging by His last few runs, He looks like He's given up the ghost... He was pulled up! Is He retiring or will He have one more crack at the King George? I'd love to see Him race again, but only if He puts up a fight. I think i'm being selfish, that I want to keep watching Him run and jump when perhaps age has caught up with him. This race makes my hairs stand on end every time... phenominal
@PhantomOftheOpera25 i agree he usually wants a race to wake up after his summer holiday, so to come back winning by 4 lengths was great! he jumped brilliantly, seemed a bit tired but i think he'll improve so much from that, especially round his favourite course in the King George :) but yeh... who should ride? Sam Thomas and McCoy have both ridden him... i vote AP but what do you think?
@thepokerpal Denman HAD a heart problem because he was absolutely exhausted in his Gold Cup.R.Walsh gave him too much rope that day on ground that was always going to favour Denman more(the time of the race being 20secs slower than when Kauto demolished him last year.Hope it's a great race but how far was Denman going to be beat by Madison Du Berlais at Aintree last year after his excellent run in the Gold Cup?How far was Madison behind Kauto Iin the King George?194 By the handicapper, deserved.
@Frostbite7000 I'd love to see it happen, But the likelyhood is Long Run will have come on a ton for his run in the Betfair Chase and with Kauto a couple of days away from his 12th birthday I doubt is constitution is the same these days. If he can replicate his Betfair run then he will be in with a shout, I doubt Long Run will want to mix it with him too early because we've all seen is jumping can crumble hes just an exceptional stayer with bundles of class. I've backed Master Minded...
@john131349 Spot on John. People can rant & rave about how far Kauto has won by but times suggest he would not have beaten Dessie or One Man. Not only that but look at what he is beating? An above average handicapper. Dessie beat grade 2/3 class horses & improving top class handicappers OUT OF SIGHT when winning the Racing Post Chase over this C/D giving them all 2st 2lb PLUS! Now that was impressive.
dessie and kauto both won top races over a variety of distances but dessie would do it in the same season, he would win the tingle creek over 2 miles then step up to 3 in the king george, 3 2 in the gold cup and finish the season in the irish national 3 5 or whitbread 3 5 furlongs, kauto won his 2 milers early in his career and has been basically a 3 mile chaser for the last 4 years, he was a versatile horse but not nearly as versatile as dessie who galloped with 6 furlong sprinters at home
@templarknight94 I think you could definately make a case for Dessert Orchid beating him round kempton. Loved it every bit as much as KS, beat better horses in his 4 King George wins than KS and also did a demolition job on the field one yr like ks this year
@foriamonlyahorse1 Its about ratings this sport. Thats why Arkle is rated as the best. As soon as KS got a rating higher than Dessie i knew the Dessie fans would get all defensive. 3 months later IC went on to win the GC and win it well. Our Vic won a Ryanair well the year before. Albertus won went on the win the Ryan air after this. Some of these are good horses. He not only beat them, he finished in a different time zone!!
Jayley1805 two things. There are far more fatalities in the National than the Gold Cup,even taking into allowance the amount of runners as a ratio.Secondly, the ground in 2008 was virtually bottomless which is indicated by the time of the race being over 20 seconds slower than 2009.This,as admitted by Mr. Nicholls, may have led to Denman's heart deficiancy.
@crickyquinn09 i agree is is the best around atm, and i believe if he wins the Gold Cup it will make him the best ever! ok, 3 GC's has been achieved before, but how many other horses have won those AS WELL AS 4 King Georges and many other G! races? and to win against a strong field by 36L.... amazing! what a horse.
@PhantomOftheOpera25 i think planet of sound or burton port but really u should just put everything on kauto star at even money he just doesnt get beat around kempton
fair comment but to be honest i literally live with paul nicholls and he told me that kauto star is gonna retire at 14 he is far from it and this year he is scheldued to run at king gerorge and bet fair chase and when he gets to 13 he might do the arkle challenge and one more time for the ending the gold cup 2014 all to come don't miss out!
@jayley1805 guy opens his eyes, how you just compared a crack with a good horse. Kauto Star is the whole program steeplechase while Denman any preparation is based on the gold cup, then let me laugh lol !!!!!!!
@Frostbite7000 purely because if he stays he will give Long Run alot to think about, Its hopeful more than anything but he gets 2 and half easily enough and Paul Nicholls is bullish. I would happily do My money to see Kauto win his 5th King George. He is without doubt the best I've seen in My lifetime and I was around to see the great Desert Orchid. Lets just appreciate a racing legend...
@bigphil did you see Dessie run live? he would have done what denman did when he galloped him into submission, kauto looks good when he gets a steady pace and can show his turn of foot but dessie would have beaten him
Imperial Commander was in this race, so was Nacarat. Our Vic was also a very good horse and albertts run went on to win the Ryanair chase. Imperial Commander is not far rated below Dessie and Kauto is rated...higher. When the ground is the same Kauto's times are simply quicker than Dessies. Where do you think Dessie would have finished at his peak here. I would like to know. I would say 2nd place!!
i'm interested in forpaddytheplasterer for the 2010 race, his trainer has said that its gonna be his main target this season, i thought he was a 3 mile chaser in the making when he first ran at the cheltenham festival but they brought him back to 2 miles for the arkle then the queen mother last march, he's got a high cruising speed and jumps well he could surprise a few of these plodders
@Jamie2462A When Dessie won in 5m50secs there was little pace & it ended up a sprint over the last three fences. Sherwood didn't even need to pick up the whip despite all being ridden to the line. One Man was very quick around Kempton & it must be said both Dessie & One Man beat much better company, although no question about the breath taking manner of this victory by KS.
@Jamie2462A Kauto Star tried conceding weight twice. Just ten pound to handicapper Lami (who was badly out of form & in decline) & 14lb to veteran Monet's Garden. He scraped home by a short head vs Lami & was beaten comprehensively by Monet's. Desert Orchid conceded 35lb to a Grand National winner & beat it 19l & 28lb to a grade one placed horse & beat it 8l going away. Not to mention countless other weight carrying efforts. Kauto Star has the fight of a kitten!!!
Desert Orchids win in the racing post chase were he carried 12 stone 4 to victory over horses like delius was the best weight carrying performance since Arkles days, he also gave weight and a beating to the top 2 milers and the stayers in the Irish national and whitbread gold cup, i also think Burough Hill Lad would of beaten kauto & denman his henessy win under 12 stone was outstanding, i think thats it now for kauto but it would be interesting if denman was entered in the national
in his king george wins dessie beat forgive n forget, the fellow 2 gold cup winners, also horses like sabin du loire, kildimo, very promising, seagram, pegwell bay, panto prince and he did beat pearlyman at ascot i think
John, we will never know for sure though. In my opinion on this day Kauto Star beats any horse that has ever lived. Just because he does not run in handicaps does'nt make him any worse a horse. You hear the "he could never give weight away and win a top handiccap!!!" I don't give a monkeys...He beat a high class field by 35-100 lengths. Not all of the horses could have had a bad day. Dessie never did it quite like this. As much as Dessie is a great, Kauto simply cruises past him here.
The question of running in the National is not about money Jayley, far more about welfare. The days of Kauto making jumping errors are long gone also, look at him jump the first open ditch-awesome!As for the question of Denman'v'Kauto my opinion would be based on Nicholls/Walsh reaction after their victories. They both think Kauto's better. The only way to me Denman can win the Gold Cup is in a bog like it was in '08.Ground is very, very important.
@noblewestham He's looking to run in the AON chase at Newbury.Nicholls has said that Denman is a gross winded horse but a little fragile after his heart problem so can work fairly hard at home without having hard races on the racecourse.
He has achieved more in terms of big races than any national hunt horse since Arkle. His achievements are very similar to that of Arkle. To think he is nearly 2 stone behind Arkle is a bit of a joke. Nothing gives Kauto Star 20lbs and beats it round Kemnpton, just as nothing could beat Denman around Cheltenham giving it 25lbs. So as much as Arkle was amazing i dont think he was as good as his legend is letting it be. Just my opinion.
if they both get to cheltenham without any problems kauto will win, when kauto won his 1st he did it in 6m 40 with a good prep. when denman won he did it in 6m 47 with kauto 7 length behind but it was well documented that kauto had an injury a few days before and wasnt 100%, then when kauto won his 2nd he did it in 6m 44 with denman not at his best....... so when they are both at there best kauto is a lot quicker. all 3 gold cups was run on the same ground aswell so there is no excuse there.
sad day today, unable to gain his 5th King George... but hey, 5 would be greedy now, right? he's got 4 in the back already, maybe it's time he hand over his crown.
@jkamwal2 Unfortunately the handicapper Smith has taken a biased view towards Nicholls horses. Kauto Star has two outstanding performances to his name of which the handicapper rated him a stupid 193 after the 2009 KG win over handicappers...12mth later its 174! The time for that KG was very average for the ground. Best Mate used to swoop late to win his races thus was never going to win by wide margins thus get high handicap marks. As a chaser Best Mate's jumping was sublime - fast, safe & neat.
that was early on in kautos career, last few years its been the betfred at haydock or the 3 miler at down royal then king george/gold cup, kauto has not outdone dessie, all hes done is win level weight races, when he runs in a whitbread/racing post chase/national and gives 2 stone + to a decent field then he can join the imortals like dessie, Arkle, burough hill lad
he looks spectacular in this but what did he beat, imperial commander ran a shocker, the runner up is a handicapper and the queens barber shop hasnt won for about 3 years, as for him being better than dessie has anyone got kautos times for the race i know dessie did it in 5.50 and one man did a 5.45 one year, has kauto broke 6 minutes?
@Seeyousometime I think you will find that people mean the race lacks depth. Previous good renewals of this race always hosted previous winners but also a host of Gold Cup placed horses. Why shouldn't Denman take his chance? You never saw Desert Orchid shirk the Gold Cup 'because he hated Cheltenham', which was evident. A real champion will take in all races & all comers.
I don't think that Paul Nicholls wants to risk him (or Denman) in a race with such a traditionally high mortality/injury rate. Both of them are too valuable to run the risk.
@jkamwal2 I actually think Best Mates rating of 179 was very fair & correct. I am just a bit concerned with ratings of 170 plus banded about willy nilly nowadays. A 170 rated horse was a rarity. I am also of the belief that Arkles 212 rating is crap too. Does anyone seriously believe Arkle would have given Best Mate, Desert Orchid or Kauto Star two stone & a beating? His times are not superior to those racing today. The whole handicapping system needs looking at again by someone with some savvy!
@john131349 - Kauto won the tingle creek, king george and Gold Cup in the same season. Back to the Kauto never ran in a handicap thing again. In time you are judged by competing in the pinnicle of your sport. Kauto has outdone Dessie. Nothing makes Dessie any better that Kauto
@TheBardyCharver Yours is the silly comment sir! Your ignorance about racing is clear. Kauto Star is the only genuine grade one horse in the race! Dessie lined up against other grade one horses! Imagine what he or One Man would have done to this lot! Imagine what Arkle would have done to Kauto? Lets just enjoy Kauto Star for what he is & keep our feet on the ground.
Long runs time was very good. Quicker than KS and far far quicker than Dessie on the same ground. NACARAT is probably a fair comparison on the last 2 KG's. Hense my Long run is rated 10lbs loower than KS's best on his win. Over 2-3 miles plus oiff level weights, there is nothing to suggest that Dessie beats KS at Cheltenham or Kempton.
2020 still watching KAUTO STAR . THE BEST SINCE ARKLE. BOXING DAY STANDING DISH. LOVED U KAUTO
2020 and it still gives me goosebumps. KAUTO u was so special. RIP Fella u won't be forgotten
I love the..."but what did he beat" ARGUMENT.....the simple answer.....EVERYTHING IN FOOOKING FRONT OFF HIM!!!!!

I was working the course I'm on at the start behind the starter in the blue jacket!!!! got to see kauto pass the finish line unbeliveable
Got goosebumps watching this. What a horse Kauto is.

Sentiments shared pal. Me too 👍
Just heard the sad news, very sad indeed,my fav jump horse ever,he was legend and the best
+POTOGURU25 This was one of the highlights in this horse's long career. Won by a street, a memorable race.
kauto star was a super horses who won load
This was the race that changed the way I looked at racing. What a supreme win

Fantastic. What a horse!
Barber Shop went into showing when retired. He became a Wembley champion is still going today but now fully retired.
One man was quick...but on GOOD TO FIRM GROUND!!!!!
Kauto would have seen him off with last years performance.
Have to think that was the peak although last year might have been the sweetest ...
Truly one of the greatest horses in history, looks like he's back to his winning ways in the Betfair :) You can't keep a good horse down!
That must have been a record winning distance
just brilliant

does anyone have vid of kauto gold cup win 09, cant find it anywhere :(
@thepokerpal Denman HAD a heart problem because he was absolutely exhausted in his Gold Cup.R.Walsh gave him too much rope that day on ground that was always going to favour Denman more(the time of the race being 20secs slower than when Kauto demolished him last year.Hope it's a great race but how far was Denman going to be beat by Madison Du Berlais at Aintree last year after his excellent run in the Gold Cup?How far was Madison behind Kauto Iin the King George?194 By the handicapper, deserved.
I've backed Master Minded...
are there
@john131349 Spot on John. Now that was impressive.
not sure if it still on you tube as videos keep getting removed for copyright reasons which is a pain in the arse!!!!!
dessie and kauto both won top races over a variety of distances but dessie would do it in the same season, he would win the tingle creek over 2 miles then step up to 3 in the king george, 3 2 in the gold cup and finish the season in the irish national 3 5 or whitbread 3 5 furlongs, kauto won his 2 milers early in his career and has been basically a 3 mile chaser for the last 4 years, he was a versatile horse but not nearly as versatile as dessie who galloped with 6 furlong sprinters at home
When they talk about the immortal arkel surely kauto will have to be mentioned in the same breath.
Makes every other horse look three legged.
@PhantomOftheOpera25 i think planet of sound or burton port but really u should just put everything on kauto star at even money he just doesnt get beat around kempton
Awesome !!!
fair comment but to be honest i literally live with paul nicholls and he told me that kauto star is gonna retire at 14 he is far from it and this year he is scheldued to run at king gerorge and bet fair chase and when he gets to 13 he might do the arkle challenge and one more time for the ending the gold cup 2014 all to come don't miss out!
@bigphil did you see Dessie run live? he would have done what denman did when he galloped him into submission, kauto looks good when he gets a steady pace and can show his turn of foot but dessie would have beaten him
He was good that day
Imperial Commander was in this race, so was Nacarat.
@Jamie2462A Fair comment.
kauto is the best just accept it, his winning times are much quicker then arkle
@Jamie2462A thankyou:)
in his king george wins dessie beat forgive n forget, the fellow 2 gold cup winners, also horses like sabin du loire, kildimo, very promising, seagram, pegwell bay, panto prince and he did beat pearlyman at ascot i think
@jkamwal2 We will never know. He had nothing else to prove after winning three Gold Cups with ease.
if they both get to cheltenham without any problems kauto will win, when kauto won his 1st he did it in 6m 40 with a good prep. when denman won he did it in 6m 47 with kauto 7 length behind but it was well documented that kauto had an injury a few days before and wasnt 100%, then when kauto won his 2nd he did it in 6m 44 with denman not at his best....... so when they are both at there best kauto is a lot quicker. all 3 gold cups was run on the same ground aswell so there is no excuse there.
sad day today, unable to gain his 5th King George... but hey, 5 would be greedy now, right? he's got 4 in the back already, maybe it's time he hand over his crown.
Kauto Star , YEATS , Sea the Stars, Master Minded
@jkamwal2 Unfortunately the handicapper Smith has taken a biased view towards Nicholls horses. Kauto Star has two outstanding performances to his name of which the handicapper rated him a stupid 193 after the 2009 KG win over handicappers...12mth later its 174! The time for that KG was very average for the ground. Best Mate used to swoop late to win his races thus was never going to win by wide margins thus get high handicap marks. As a chaser Best Mate's jumping was sublime - fast, safe & neat.
@WHISKARDI Well said!!
that was early on in kautos career, last few years its been the betfred at haydock or the 3 miler at down royal then king george/gold cup, kauto has not outdone dessie, all hes done is win level weight races, when he runs in a whitbread/racing post chase/national and gives 2 stone + to a decent field then he can join the imortals like dessie, Arkle, burough hill lad
he will the king geoge again and then the gold cup
Kauto Is Better Than Arkle Dessie etc the best horse that ever lived :)
he looks spectacular in this but what did he beat, imperial commander ran a shocker, the runner up is a handicapper and the queens barber shop hasnt won for about 3 years, as for him being better than dessie has anyone got kautos times for the race i know dessie did it in 5.50 and one man did a 5.45 one year, has kauto broke 6 minutes?
Over 2-3 miles plus oiff level weights, there is nothing to suggest that Dessie beats KS at Cheltenham or Kempton.
well with imperial commander out of the king george its all clear for kauto star to make it 5 in a row
Just saving 10 pounds lol every day for him untill he runs at gold cup:)the greatest horse:)
