diying a mid century inspired fireplace for cozy season

- As we wind down towards the end of this year, I wanted to take a step back and dive into a DIY project that's been on my mind for ages…If you've been following for a while now, you might recall a fireplace makeover from my previous home. I loved that cozy corner of my room, so when I moved I took the electric fireplace with me. Obviously I couldn’t bring the built in DIY aspect from that makeover, so the bare fireplace has been sitting in the corner of my room for a while now. It’s finally time to make it look a little bit more intentional in that corner.

I know I would be bumping into the top’s corner jutting out every darn day 😬
The left corner melted my brain this entire video. I love her videos so much, I can't believe I am so triggered. lol
Same. The project was great except for that one corner. It sadly ruins the look for me
Yeah, I dont really understand why she made it like that.
Agreed. It's a safety hazard & it seems oddly too large, especially since it interferes with the wood trim on the wall. Besides that though, I think she did a great job. Looks cozy & relaxing.
My hip is bruised just looking at it.
The house I grew up in, my dad built a fireplace in the family room. He was learning at the time and didn’t know 100% what he was doing. He used chicken coop wire as the gripper to help affix the bricks he got for free from the job site he was working on at that time. Fast forward to 2020 and my brother sees our childhood home for sale. There still stands my Dads fireplace in the family room. 😍😭 They remodeled the rest of the house and doesn’t look anything like when we were kids. But my Dads fireplace is still standing 😍
This is the cutest story ever
Aww, I love this ❤️
Your dad sounds like such a dedicated and caring man ❤
Woah that's awesome and lovely!
@@aidee4186 yeah…he’s definitely that! My parents sold the home in 1993 and we couldn’t believe my Dads fireplace was still there 😍
The projecting corner of the mantle is an accident waiting to happen. You should blunt that end to fit properly into the space.
IKR?! I was just thinking the same, I don't think the top piece needs to come all the way out, such a weird choice.
It turned out so beautifully! I'm just unsure of that extremely sharp point that seems to be sticking straight out...maybe I'm just paranoid because I have small kids
I feel bad that she felt she needed to apologize for having zip lock bags… like come on, i really really hope nobody would be hung up on that while watching this incredible masterpiece she made
Exactly. People use plastic bags. It's FINE. We can't all do all the things all the time for all the causes. It's just not possible. Also big companies are the worst offenders when it comes to plastic. not regular people.
@@CaliMel184 I know I'd go after, say, the CEO of Exxon-Mobil before I'd go after a regular-ass person with a box of Ziplocs.
We apologize for everything here in Canada. It's one of our super-powers. 🦝
I mean being eco conscious is part of the sorry girls brand so I think its important to let the audience know that they are aware of these things
Everything very cute and cool, yet that corner edge. I can foresee many of sore hips by walking into, you might be better off cutting it off. Fantastic job gurl.
I, too, absolutely love it. Except for that corner that juts out. My Capricorn self says nooo, it's not symmetrical!! And I without a doubt would so hurt myself on it trying to get by. But if she loves it, cool, it's in her house not mine!
@@dsf114 very true, I enjoyed the brick work. I might try in my tiny home build next year.
Great job! Interior designer here, I have to agree with the rest of the comments, that corner will deffinetly leave it’s mark, also would paint the wall in a warm gray rather than a cool tone one, it’s sort of off putting next to the beautiful brick and wood stain ❤
Can I just say how much I APPRECIATE the realness -- like the mortar freaking chipping off the plywood. Hilarious, heart breaking, but so dang relatable.
AND THE LOTR JOKE?!??!!? thx for being the best friend lol.
Is it just me but I would have cut that corner sticking out and the stain is a bit too dark. Otherwise I love the brick look and color. You still did a great job like usual
Love this! Realistically maybe square off the corners of the wood on both sides so they don’t stick out
Ya for real. At first I was like what are people talking about? and then I saw how far it juts out into the door jamb. Or they can get some of those baby corner bumpers to put on there, but it would make it look worse than just cutting it off square instead.
It looks amazing but that sharp corner is a safety hazard to me and if you cut that part I think it will look more built in for that corner. Right now it looks like something off to me.
The fact that she started this off with saying it was 'a simple diy project' and then was literally using stone and mortar, iconic
I didn't realise about the corner until i saw the comments but now i cannot unsee it and it's freaking me out 😅
such a beautifull project! And very useful as usual! 🤓Although i have to say....that corner sticking into the doorway is making my skin crawl 😵💫😵💫
Looks amazing!!! That corner tho 🥹
That bit sticking out by the door is an accident waiting to happen. Trim it back and it will def look better and be safer
On tip the wood below the mortar needs to be moistened slightly for the mortar to stick. Too wet on your mix it will slump too much. Everything is a learning curve and you’re always trying new things. Love your bravery. When you back butter be more liberal with the amount of mortar on the brick. Bamboo is a grass so danish oil won’t work on it. I agree with the comments the one corner needs to be cut back or rounded off to prevent injuries
You did an amazing job on the brick work!! The top is a little chunky compared to the fireplace size and the left side sticking past the doorway seems like a midnight hip buster. It doesn’t look like it would be “original” to the brickwork. I love your style and your home so much! I really enjoyed watching this build!
Definitely a “trust the process” DIY
Is there a reason the left side is jut out way past, near the door vs a bit shorter?
anche io l'ho notato ma credo sia per renderlo simmetrico alla parte opposta direi
It could be squared off.
@@2222titia hai ragione, a prima vista sembravano uguali ma ho riguardato ingrandendo
@@jo4vt sicuramente sarebbe meglio
That corner is giving me so much anxiety, could it be possible to cut it or somehting? So that it is flush with the wall?
Gorgeous job Becky!! Way to pivot🎉
But that mantle corner would be deadly for my clumsy self 🤣
Then it's a good thing you DON'T LIVE in HER house, isn't it! Sheesh! Everyone is so freakin' critical!!
love this you made it look so easy!!!! just wished that corner wasn't jutting out i know id be walking into that!
Waiting for the follow-up video doing a DIY MCM first aid kit to help with being impaled daily on that corner.
With respect.
That corner looks sharp. 🤔
Love you Becky ❤ but please fix that corner 😭
I LOVE how you never shy away from a challenge!
Hey, sometimes a girl needs a zip lock bag, don't apologize. 😊 Fireplace looks great. I love the creation of faux bricks. Less weight, more cost effective.
I love how it turned out, but that corner would be the reason I'd have 80,000 bruises lol
That turned out so beautifully! 🤎🧡 Just a few questions:
Why is there a sharp corner protruding out?
Was your angel off or you just didn't want to cut that corner flush?
Is there a gap somewhere behind the unit for heat to escape?
Do you even need to cut an area for the heat to circulate?
I thought in your arch fireplace you left a gap...🤔
That looks really cosy!🔥
But I agree about the corner, looks a bit odd, I would have cut it, but if you like it, keep it🙌
I love that you were so adventurous, taking on stone work! Then getting past the mortar failure and ending up with a beautiful fireplace. It's terrific!
If you had not discovered Durock board, you could have gotten wire mesh to staple to wood, then brown coat the cement onto that. Good job, Becky! ❤
I have been waiting forever for more That 70s House content. Becky, please make more cool stuff, you're style is impeccable. Btw for the top part, I would've placed the longer brick to the side, just so it wouldn't seem so centered, and the shorter bricks together.
Either that or since she made other bricks smaller to make them fit she also could have broken the longer brick in the middle to make it more fitting with the rest of the bricks length. :)
For next time, you can wet sand and do multiple coats of danish oil to get a shinier finish! It’s a tedious process but makes the wood look so pretty and smooth
I love supporting Austin and amazing job Becky 🩷
It looks fabulous! The container holding the cords reminds me of the stove pipe for the fireplace! Excellent!
You’re right, it does!
I love how supportive Austin is 🥺
The end result isn’t too bad but i def think it loses the wow factor that the mid century inspo have due to the weird placement of it and the fact it’s in a corner. It’s just too close to the window and the fact it juts out feels out of place due to the wall placement. I think it might have been better to place it in another location if possible cause it just feels to grand and like an afterthought unlike the way the mid century ones were done. They were well incorporated into the layout and that’s what made them so grand and beautiful
Becky and I could not have more differing styles, but I always appreciate her projects because of the time and care she puts into them and I can see so well how it suits her aesthetic! Amazing job, stone mason skills ☑
Becky, you must get frustrated once in a while! But you persevere! Your fireplace is lovely. I know you will enjoy the ambiance in your bedroom.
In the US and Canada you want to put tiles and bricks on wood. Crazy for me! haha I'm glad it works at least for texture 😄
I love it so much EXCEPT for that corner sticking out into the doorway!!
Tres' chic! Great job, Becky!
It saddens me that UA-camrs/influencers feel a need to apologize for products they use, in order to avoid backlash. Those that criticize probably do the same or worse! Ya gotta do, what ya gotta do/use!!
Austin is so supportive ❤
Becky what is that corner! You must tell us how that's going.
Great job. The mantle jutting out is fixable by making the opening a bit smaller on that side. But if it doesn't bother her, no worries. She has lots of projects more important. TFS
The left corner hon, it's an injury in the making! Otherwise it looks fabulous! I love your can do attitude!
great job! it looks super cozy! wish you mentioned why you left the edge tho
It’s called pointing when you’re filling the gaps between bricks 😊
It looks great, but a truly unhinged design decision to leave that sharp murder corner
Love your mantel! Nice work! That montage of your prior mishaps made me feel so much better 😂 btw Becky you are a great squatter. Most North Americans are not able to squat with their feet flat on the ground. Yay for you! 😊
Tip for the next time (from a stone mason assistant that has done full stone fireplaces.)
You don’t need to use tiling techniques (mortar).
Next time use something called “Sikaflex fast cure (FC) polyurethane adhesive sealant”. It’s an amazing glue and stays a little flexible.
Definitely the Fast Cure!!!
Sukaflex is the brand and the more expensive option. There are much cheaper ones available. You can either get it in a ‘calk’ kinda tube or a ‘sausage’ with then a bigger ‘sausage gun’.
You just glue them on the plywood (or pretty much any service). You won’t see if you grout it afterwards.
You can also ‘dry lay’ the stones with this glue. Which is without grouting and the stones are much closer to each other… Tip then is to have a dark/black background 👍
Becky your skin is glowing!!! You guys should talk about what natural or clean product ya you use
Wow. Two perfect matchups in one video? You are the DIY queen! When you put that fireplace in there, that was so satisfying.
Spectacular job girl!
I am down right OBSESSED with this DIY! My bf has an electric fireplace and I forgot about the previous video you did on a mantle/frame... definitely going to be doing something similar in the future!!!
Hey Nicky, you seemed to have an amazing family Christmas time 😍 love the scarf!!! So pretty. Great to have you back lovely xxx
it would look awesome if you expanded the wood up the wall behind the tv as well ✨
In the future and to anyone watching and maybe doing something similar: Ideally you should use cement board for tiling onto! Plywood sucks too much moisture too quickly out of mortar to get a correct adhesion of the tiles. It will also make it more likely to crack as wood warps with moisture and heat more than the cement board would.
But otherwise, amazing job, Becky!
Clearly I should have finished watching before commenting because you figured it out like a minute later😂
This is absolutely amazing 🤩
The left corner would be a beginning scene of Law and Order - SVU -
😂😂😂😂😂 SVU
STUNNING
I love Beckys house. Takes me back to my childhood. ❤
This turned out AMAZING! Becky I love your home renos! As I've been doing my own home renos I also find surprises under every floor and wall, so it's nice to see that others have that too, and can make it beautiful!! Looking forward to the bathroom reno 💕
Im glad Becky loves it because it's her home most importantly but i don't see it as mid-century modern at all. Looks more country to me. The corner style and brick reminds me more of a 90s ranch house. But again if she loves it. Glad she didn't stop when the mortar didn't work at first.
I love your 70’s home!
Wow, wow, it turned out fabulous. Kudos for the grout application as if frosting a cake. Must watch this magic again!
I am obsessed with your MCM home and decor. I so wish I had your talent. Please be careful with the door way corner counter.
Hello Beautiful Becky just love watching your vlogs and designs along with the team sorry girls am following fr Alberta Canada 🇨🇦💐❤️🤗
THANK YOU for sharing the parts where you struggled and persevered!! It gives encouragement to other DIY'ers!
While not my vibe at all, I'm actually impressed with how well she built this, nice work
That sharp corner stresses me out
I’m clicking fast af boi, when we’re in Becky’s home! Shoot any diy in a home space! 😇
Such a great DIY! ❤
Thanks for posting girls! Amazing content. I wouldn’t have put the fireplace in the corner but (if possible) like in the inspo picture as a walk around/room divider thing. Would have looked so cool
That plant was definitely a strategic placement cuz I KNOW I would knock into that pointy corner lol
Some of my FAVORITE sorry girls episodes are Becky’s bedroom makeovers in the old house and I love that this kind of feels like a step towards that in this house
It looks great!
I've been needing some Becky content!
i LOVE the result! it's inspiring to me to see you transform your cute home into a 1970's-throwback haven. sending love and holiday cheer to all ~
Looks great.
Love the brick! I feel like it would be even grander/more MCM to do a faux wall behind the fireplace and mantel to extend the effect and make it seem more realistic. Also could be cool to do it all brick too all the way up to the ceiling!
I love the way it turned out. having a fireplace in the bedroom is such a nice touch! I am really enjoying your series!
Your fireplace looks great. I think it’s really going to enhance your room and be something that you enjoy for years to come.
I like this one so much more than the fireplace you built at your last house!
Becky and that’s 70s house are always my absolute fav videos! ❤️
Austin is the best cheerleader ❤
YYYYYaaaayyyyyy well done girl!!!
It look like it’s Always been there Love it
Wow Becky this is warm vibes I absolutely love it enjoy such a great job
Wow that corner looks fire now. Love it so much. 💜
Overall a beautiful job, I would square off the corners though. Especially the one jutting out into the doorway, I would be worried about injuries cuz I’m so clumsy!
it went from such a sad corner to looking soooo good!!! well done!
I absolutely love watching you make over your house !
gorgeous
I found for these kind of tiles angle grinder worked the best for me. It is ok if comb take you more mortar, cause you put another on tile in oposite direction. This "checker" will lock together. Rock it, Becky!
And you can do it in one step. :)
Okay I hate when I’m using brain talents and someone compliments me on non-brain talent but I’m gonna do it. BECKY YOUR HAIR IS SLAYING IN THIS VIDEO!!! Also great job using the brain talents to make a cool thing!
That came out great! And I love the lighting behind the TV hack! 😊
So love this!
