This is what life after burnout looks like

  • I want to tell you about the results of an experiment I've been running for nearly a year since I had a burnout in November 2018.
When I burned out, I had to let go my biggest consulting clients and lost 80% of my income.
Since I had to start my business again from scratch, I thought: I may as well do things differently.
For one year, I decided to see what would happen if I put my mental, physical and emotional health first over clients, over opportunities, over money.
My health was in such bad shape that I was willing for my career to take a hit if that’s what it had to take.
    So I took the risk.
    The results might surprise you...

Burnout is the best thing that ever happened to me. It made me realise that nobody was going to come in and stop me from being self-destructive, it was up to me to set boundaries for myself and decide what I wanted.

On a larger scale, I worked for a company that was the result of 4 business merging. We were "drowning" in customers. The owner decided to double our prices. We lost half our clients, kept the other half and gave them better service. We ended up being the expensive bid, but the best and on time. Lesson: Pick your market and don't try to be everything to everyone.

There's a story in the bible where Jesus visits Martha and Mary which is actually about this topic. Martha is running around frantically trying to do everything all the while Mary is sat at the foot of Jesus listening to every word he's saying. Martha complains bitterly to Jesus about her doing all the work while Mary "Does nothing". Jesus gently rebukes her and tells her that all this running about is a complete waste of time while Mary, sitting down as she was, is the one who has it figured out. The world wants you frantic, chasing our own tails, burning ourselves out, we have to resist that and never engage with that mentality no matter who is putting pressure on us to do so.

The occasion we are talking about is when he was invited for a meal. Martha was fussing about making it extravagant but Jesus said just one thing would do. This was exactly my experience. I'm a stay at home mum. Had no sleep for years. 1 of my 3 kids has Tourette's and autism and ADHD and I would rush in the daytime to get my mummy jobs done before spending the last 6 hrs of the day stopping my son from aggressively and violently trying to harm others. Then we got a dog and I remember taking it for a lovely walk around the block, taking our time. I had mothers saying 'gee I wish I could take a walk instead of rushing to work but some of us have to!' it's hard not to feel guilty but if I didn't take the time out and accept I am working enough as a mummy, I would have had a heart attack by now.

Thank you for sharing here. There is woefully little research or resources for burned out parents. My definition of burnout is that it's what happens when we care too much for others for too long, without caring for ourselves. The way society has set modern parents (and especially mothers) up to fail is atrocious. I'm so glad to hear you were able to break free of The Guilt Trap and declare: I am enough, this is enough. I work in mental health and the healthcare companies I have worked for are so unethical, it's impacted my health and I have to move on. In the process now of transitioning to a less stressful telehealth job where clinicians have a voice but it still seems to good to be true, , trying to stop being in fight or flight such as giving up coffee, going to the gym, and increasing boundaries and detachment where appropriate. It for sure will be a lifelong process. Please don't ever let your own self care get so low...it is so hard but nurses are superheroes and deserve TLC. Yes, you can. Ask a hunger striker. Their love for their cause trumps any individual need to fufil their bodily needs. They might be satisfied with water until they die. Some do. People sacrifice for one need over another every day. Motivations are unique to each person, and arent tidy or neat like Maslow's model suggests. @@BigHenFor I think Maslow's ideas were meant to be taken as an average over a person's life time because yes: people can gamble their lower needs short term to regain their lower and higher needs long term. Hence a boxer will gamble their physical well-being, security and safety in a boxing ring in exchange for a better life later on for their family.
Likewise for those who put their career before everything else: yes it might work short term, but if you don't have solid foundations for why you're doing this long term then your biological makeup will likely rebel at some point leading to burnout.

Hi, thanks a lot for this video. It randomly popped up in my homepage and the title caught my interest since I'm in a phase where I'm trying to redesign my future at work after a hell of a year. 2020 was a journey with no boundaries, my inability to say NO when it's worth has driven me into a crazy world where I was always inline to guarantee success on unrealistic milestones and this took me away from my family and myself. Yes, I've been falling as victim feeling guilty for dropping what comes in excess, but I learned that taking commitments without resonable limitations doesn't work in the long term, you just hurt yourself and you pay for it with a higher price later and your experience now makes me feel I'm doing the right thing in redesigning my future. Now I'm on a break for end of year holidays, recovering my energies with the target of preparing myself to get back smarter. Have a great 2021. Cheers!!

Interestingly, here in the U.S. burnout doesn't exist. Employees simply need to practice stress management and improve our organizational skills. Those who cannot do those things exist in the shadows and on the fringes of society.
Also, a good inferential point from your video is the difference between what is valued by clients (as you have) versus employers. Employers simply perpetuate a system where they control the employees and get the most work out of them (as employers believe), while clients and customers don't worry about making you work as hard as you can; they care only about the quality of the end product. Thanks for a great video.

The same values were given to me, that working hard and sacrifice was the only path to getting on. Values which galvanised my thinking and doing for eons. I have had notions that there must be another way but did not allow myself to wonder 'there' for too long as all around were marching 'that beat 'so it must be the 'right'way. After watching your video taking a leap of faith and really trusting in myself and my thinking as you have seems like a viable option. Mark! This made me grin from ear to ear. I'm so glad to hear you have taken a leap of faith - something very old and very true was still alight inside you. When the rest of the Industrialised west is committed to a Death Spiral of extraction and exhaustion, it's hard to orient ourselves towards The Life Force. It can be a lonely path at times, riddled with guilt, doubt and fear of being ostracised. But we have to remember that "normal" and "natural" have nothing to do with one another. When I was in the depths of burnout and feeling like a failure, it was nature that soothed me. Because when I looked out at the natural world and saw nothing but elegant systems of energy exchange working in harmony, I realised there couldn't be anything wrong with ME. How could humans be part of this exquisitely efficient web of life-force generation and burn out and exhaustion be the norm? It's what we consider "normal" that is toxic and abnormal. For millennia, our "natural" needs as animal bodies have been shamed and repressed as mechanisms of social control. But finally, I think many of us can look around at the insanity of our workplaces, social norms and systems and realise that wherever there is shame and guilt, there is hidden power. Let's reclaim it.

I struggle A LOT even to put my basic needs first like sleeping/eating/washing myself. And if you reading are not a parent, please don t judge, because you just have no idea what I am talking about. I had no idea before becoming a parent myself.

I respectfully disagree - and thank you for raising this as it's a common myth that needs to be busted. You can burn out doing what you love. You can burn out being your own boss. You can burnout being a diving instructor in Bali (true story!) I burned out just 9 months into having my own business. Burnout isn't caused by employment, overworking, or even having a job. It's what happens when we care too much for too long, without caring for ourselves. I cared FAR more about work when I had my own business vs. when I was an employee for 10 years. I have also seen many people quit their jobs because of burnout, only to burnout again in their new venture because their habits did not change.

I take a month or two off every year, usually near the holidays. Yes, I quit jobs regularly. Couldn't care less. Since the US doesn't give ppl REAL time off at work, I take it anyway. Employers really don't care--if you have experience they'll hire you. I work in social services so burnout is REAL. And it's a big reason turnover at nonprofits is so high.

Everything that holds us down and stops us doing what is better for us starts with: "what will people say?" Fear of what others think about us is the invisible prison that keeps us from living life to its fullest. So, next time you catch yourself thinking about what others will think of you, change that thought to: How will I if feel if I let this fear of (what people think) control me? What's the greater risk? Letting go of what people think - or letting go of how you feel, what you believe, and who you are? I have been doing that for some time now, and it has changed my life for the better, and I must say, that is how we learn to really love ourselves. Much love to you all! 💚💙💜💛❣
