@@jonathanshortall I’m not a competitive player I’m a narrative/casual/fun player. But I watch a lot of competitive channels because they’re the most prominent on UA-cam. I think the consensus is that knights are too pricey and easy to kill at one wound. Most competitive lists go for MSU warhounds and forsaken in core and dragon ogres and dragons in the rest of the list.
@@jonathanshortall Unfortunately not. Chaos knights are costly for what they do (marauders are more cost effective imo, especially the new huscarls), chosen knights are way better, but even costlier. Chaos Warriors have dragon ogres and those are simply incredible for their points, then they have the potential to field up to 3 dragons and their wizards are also extremely powerful (can get up to +6 to cast in a Tzeentch build). This box is extremely good point wise, it's the best thus far and all the tOW starter boxes have been very good in terms of points, yet boxes like dwarfs or Bretonnia have sligltly less points but more stuff you want to field in a competitive build.
As an added bonus, the models look like a proper unit, not each man covered in 50 pieces of costume jewelry and doing a boy band dance move. Actually lots of AoS sculpts would be really nice in a D&D game, but these guys look like an army.
Tbh as an AoS and Old World player I love AoS models but I must admit that the models in this Box have their own Charm. Still there is a reason why I use AoS Warriors and Knights for Chosen and Chosen Knights and AoS models for the Daemon Prince.
Yeah, the offputting thing for me in AoS (design wise) is that everything looks like a hero character. Just very Marvel. I prefer LOTR though ^^ I mean, I love the newer centrepiece models but I'd like for my regular dudes to still be regular dudes. If everything is special, nothing is.
Its almost like they should do this for 40k. It doesn't have to be an extravagant army. You could EASILY make a 'starting army' box set and maybe toss in a vehicle or two. Like an Impulsor and one of the Redemptor chassis dreads and all else is infantry. Even if the models themselves weren't the cream of the crop, could you imagine how many people would dive into the hobby if there were 2k point 'starter army' boxes for that price? Hell, it'd even make solo army collectors try other armies at a reasonably affordable price. I know I would be more inclined to try other armies, other factions.
Why would they do that?, they do boxes that have like 600-700 pts of models they sell for like £130-140 and they sell in no time. They are company that is there ultimately to make money, sure I am sure everyone would like stuff cheaper, but people pay the prices and GW make a profit so they will not sell them cheaper. They are not going to give you a whole 40k army for less than £100 ever. I mean it is the fundamental flaw in the argument where people go '40k is too expensive' and then you look at all their sales, all their profits, all the boxes and minis that sell out quickly, all the huge collections people have etc. which ultimately prove it is not too expensive, because if it was people wouldn't buy it. This kind of applies to all hobbies really that people consider 'expensive', like there is no way I am ever going to buy a £5k carbon fibre bike, but people interested and serious about their cycling do, I am not paying £1k, £2k plus, to join a golf club plus spending £1500 plus on new clubs, but again plenty people do.
Yeah look its kinda nice to have a setting change from now on then too, after fully painting 4 old world armies this year i'm delighted painting and playing with some killteam inquisitorial agents!
You can always do a little of everything. Go play some old world for a while, maybe something fresh will have you looking at the 40k models differently after a bit. Good or bad
I'm friends with another woman who works at my LGS, and she gave me a brief intro game to the Old World wherein I got to pit her dark elves against tomb kings. It was so much fun! 💜 I was instantly drawn into the gameplay, and a big part of why is because it reminded me of the 5th edition of 40k, which was my introduction to this hobby. I had so much fun with that iteration of 40k rules, and I'm so pleased with how similar The Old World feels! Here's hoping I can finally afford to order my first box of dark elf warriors soon. 🤞
It's also very easy to paint with all that armour so even better for an introduction for new players. Black spray prime. Dry brush dirty metal armour colour. 90% done.
You CAN make a semi-decent and affordable army out of this, though you'll need to do some conversions and buy a couple characters on Daemonic mounts (best £ price to performance on the table, even shelling out for a box of the AoS Varanguard gives you a character to spare (easy to sell) and would still be ~£150 all in). Make a unit of 6 Chosen Knights, a small 10-12 block of warriors, then you convert the rest into Forsaken (you don't even need to go Crazy, the chariot sprues come with a bunch of Mutated Heads and just give them double hand-weapons, paint 'em grubbier/bloodier than your warriors done). The rest can be used to fill out points, depending on how many forsaken (three 6 man units seems common in top level tournaments) enough spare warriors for a little unit of Chosen with great Weapons to maybe tag with the warriors, obviously the chariots and a unit of 4 Core Knights without a banner isn't a total waste of points, it would likely get ignored. If you were being a real cheap skate you could maybe find a way to use the Gorebeasts as Daemonic Mounts or Unit fillers.
They could come up for a christmas battleforce box or two for the old world that would be around 1500-2k for other armies. I feel like that would get a lot attention from other systems players
Mine is arriving tomorrow. As you say it’s not peak competitive, but they’re decent, a great core to build from and it’ll *feel* like a warriors of chaos army.
The Arcane Journal has "Taskmasters Scourge" - if the bearer passes a leadership test the infantry unit accompanying it gets a 1D3 bonus to its movement characteristic. At 25pts its a cost effective way to make at least one unit of chaos warriors a useful addition to an army.
As a long time player/enthusiast/collector(- since 87' )of all GW products, I can honestly say this is a great box set. I picked one up cuz- why the heck not! It's such a great deal I felt I had to get it. The value is amazing and truly does feel like a great purchase.
Remember back in the 90's where GW would sell mail-order army kits for most factions of OldHammer? Peppridge Farm remembers. (I used to own a Dark elf box and I stuff have a Lizardman box that I haven't been able to sell yet).
So if I wanted a spearhead for AoS I could also buy this box for almost the same price, get some movement trays for round into square bases and also have nearly 2k points for old world? Or am I getting something wrong? 😀😍
Back in 6th edition Fantasy, GW put out some great value Army boxes. Each one was always a significant savings. Enough of a savings that they didn't want Employees buying them also since we had very generous 60% off retail prices already.
Warriors of Chaos are also a model range where slapchop works perfectly, giving great results quickly, especially the infantry which is the bulk of this box
I got this box to make it an AoS slave to darkness army. Having a chaos daemon army for 40k it basically brought me way over 2000k points and it felt so good...considering is WARHAMMER!
Back in the day I started my Admech list buy just buying two start collecting boxes and a box of infiltrators. Wasn't a bad way to start back in 8th edition.
The box makes two (quite powerful) Slaves to Darkness Spearhead's. which is also a very fun, fast little game. I love those old sculpts though, so I'm biased.
I have a warriors of Chaos army that's 15 years old by now, but this box is tempting because another 32 warriors with 10 more knights is quite a draw. Chaos Lord on Chariot is quite a bore to me though. Maybe I could kitbash it into a warshrine instead.
I suspect this is also a GREAT Sigmar box for Slaves to Darkness players - the 30 Warriors can be Warriors, the 2 extra can be kitbashed into leader/HQ types, Knights are knights, Chariots are Chariots, etc etc....
Looks like a pretty sweet starter army. Ofc nothing that will win a tournament. I would probably split the knights into two units. One regular and one chosen. And then move as many Warriors I could afford to Chosen Warriors. Add Infernal Puppet on the mage and the everpresent Ogreblade on the lord and you got a sweet starter!
I bought the Chaos Battalion Box and the bases for the chariots are 25x50, so, the old size, while these chariots are listed with a base size of 60x100. Anyone else had the wrong bases in their box? Will GW release all chariots with the wrong base size now?
i got the eldar army box back in the day it was 2000pts ulthwan a warlock a unit of guardians a dreadnought/wraith lord, wall walker, weapons platform and five models of every aspect warrior except dark reapers who had three models cant remember if it came with Auruman i think so got it for about $250 AU
Does the Box actually come with halberds for the chaos warriors? I thought those were separately sold But, if youre being thrifty you could turn those excess gorebeasts into Chaos Spawn.
Love these boxes, I am building Bretonnians for Old World, but have lots of old chaos models on square bases, so would be cool to field thos in the Old World to, but I gues I would need to update the base sizes. Would probably need to do the sme with my Dwarfs too, but some of them has so bad bases I should make some new anyway...
If someone is curious, this box in aos is araund 1320/1340 depending on how you build chariots and you will have 2 aditional chaos wariorors that you can kitbash to chaos lord , chaos sorcerer or exzlated champion, bringing it to araund 1600 points.

WoC have always been great for £/pts. Chaos Lord on dragon, a sorcerer and a standard bearer, some marauder horsemen, some knights, a monster or two...what more could you need?
Its only a good deal if a) you want everything in the box, and b) you dont need to buy additional parts to make it work. The latter is more crucial given the lack of characters in these sets, and as you need heroes to game in Old World... Chariots dont count as heroes, as they're the last place you want them.
Considering I; 1: Have at least a bit of interest in Old World. 2: Have friends who are building or already have Old World armies. And 3: Have said I would likely go Chaos Warriors if I did play, its like GW were listening to me.
Just bought this because it'll do exactly what it says it'll do - get me 2000 points on the table for £88, thereby providing me with a relatively inexpensive 'in' into Warhammer Old World, something I've wanted to play for a while. So many snarky comments here from people who either didn't actually watch the video, or watched it but didn't listen properly. The all too common bane of social media.
Actually Element Games only discount it by 15% which is £93.50. Considering however you do not get books or new models, not sure if this is really any better than the more expensive Bretonnia set if you want to get started in WH:OW (but that one is not even discounted).
Since I made this video they changed the price to a 15% discount, but then also changed the Orcs & Goblins box to a 25% discount. So I guess it kinda works out 😅
I'm only turned off from buying this box because i still have the old StD Start collecting that is basically just one half of this box + a chaos sorcerer on foot. Would be too much of the same stuff i guess. Great box though.
Not only that, you can build TWO (2) Slaves to Darkness Spearhead forces for AoS out on this one box, and have models left over. Take the Champion from a Chaos Chariot to use as your Chaos Lord, replacing him this one of the Chaos Warriors. Grab 2x 5 more Chaos Warriors and five of the Chaos Knights. That's a Spearhead force, right there. Then do it again. Two Spearheads. £88. Bargain. Just add round bases. Best box ever? I'll say.
@@greywulfslair well, in my area most are already rotating into fantasy / old world and some were buying AoS products before that just to convert them into fantasy... they are selling their AoS armies even. If you think about it makes sense, old world fills a much wider niche while AoS is simply 40k game conversion with weird fantasy visual choices
@@jakobo88 'In your area' isn't the same as 'nobody', friend. Different groups can have very different experiences and sweeping generalisations don't do anybody any favours. Around me, for example, it's easier to get a game of AoS or Bolt Action than it is 40k. Old World is growing steadily, but Spearhead has brought in more new gamers to the group than anything else recently. Each their own, and it all benefits the hobby as a whole.
probably better to go one unit of 5 chosen knights and 15 chosen warriors then 17 chaos warriors and 5 chaos knights 10 chosen knights in one unit is a bit of a points sink and an easy target. realistically you would probably drop some of the warriors and get some marorders for a meat shield in a tournament you would probably want to take tszich mark because you would probably get your wizard picked off my cannons or dragons early on and then blasted by spells and lousing one of those units without making any impact would e brutal
This is always the way. Its why GW added terms and conditions to its third-party sellers to prevent them from selling internationally and having discounts over a certain threshold. It was possible in the early to mid 2000's to order online from an indie UK store and get the item for cheaper than what your local store was getting it at wholesale. He'll, I used to get a 20% discount directly from gw back in the days of phoning an order in from a catalogue or from the pages of white dwarf magazine simply because I paid in pound sterling which had an 18-20% difference in real exchange rate versus the 40% price difference between currencies that gw used. Worked on an early iteration of their Web store too up until about 2004ish.

Thanks GW for selling us old tat for premium prices. This is actually the best battalion as the cavalry and chariots are pretty "recent" and high quality. Those Chaos Warriors - every single one is defective as the mould slipped and so the fingers are not aligned 100% + they are from 2004 lmao. GW did not even given you a plastic upgrade sprue for them....
Here's hoping they do that for more factions. Admittedly, WoC is pretty elite, but still, if we can have elves, ogres, and ma away be if we're really lucky empire get 1500ish...
32 Chaos Warriors. Not to sound negative, but no one ever brings that in a 2000 points battle. 16 Warriors and 16 Forsaken would have been brilliant. Forsaken are more or less an auto-include for WoC. Their kit is sorely missing right now.
I don't know if Chaos Warriors are actually good, more like aggressively ok and more than ok for casual play. Still a lot better than State Troops. Other than that, yeah didn't think of the character chariots angle, so was keen to see how you'd possibly assemble 2k out of that battalion.
The only concern I have with old world is the lazy way GW added further nodels to Bretonia and Khemri beyond the initial box sets. I wasn't going to support that kind of behavior. If I only need the starter box however... how easy is it to adept the bases touse them in Sigmar and Old World simultaneously?
Not saying you're cheating, or that it invalidates the point of this video, but: the basic Warriors only come with handweapon/shield or double handweapons. No halberds in this box - getting them seperately would cost quite a bit extra. And the other kits in this box do not provide enough bits for a "conversion solution".
Moulds and designs are old already paid for themselves, so makes sense for them to keep it cheap as that why o.g old world failed it was ridiculously overpriced to get an army.

If I was considering starting Old World. I might very well choose this box set to get me started. I'm on my last 3 kidneys and I started with 10.

Based on your advice I just picked the box off of Amazon for €128.00 .. It was €145 on GW.
That is easily the best deal i have ever seen from GW in over 20 years in the hobby. Unreal good value.

My orc/goblin battalion box was the same, but I customized a lot of shamans and used undead bits to make black orcs haha.
I bought the Chaos Battalion Box and the bases for the chariots are 25x50, so, the old size, while these chariots are listed with a base size of 60x100. Anyone else had the wrong bases in their box? Will GW release all chariots with the wrong base size now?
Get a BSB on foot in one of the Warrior units and you are absolutely golden for a 2k list. Just one Batallion Box and one purchased foot character.
i got the eldar army box back in the day it was 2000pts ulthwan a warlock a unit of guardians a dreadnought/wraith lord, wall walker, weapons platform and five models of every aspect warrior except dark reapers who had three models cant remember if it came with Auruman i think so got it for about $250 AU

I think halberds aren't there, they are metal upgrades and the box states it is fully plastic.

Love these boxes, I am building Bretonnians for Old World, but have lots of old chaos models on square bases, so would be cool to field thos in the Old World to, but I gues I would need to update the base sizes. Would probably need to do the sme with my Dwarfs too, but some of them has so bad bases I should make some new anyway...
If someone is curious, this box in aos is araund 1320/1340 depending on how you build chariots and you will have 2 aditional chaos wariorors that you can kitbash to chaos lord , chaos sorcerer or exzlated champion, bringing it to araund 1600 points.
The O&G box is terrible because it's full of terrible things I'd never field in an O&G army.
I'm really tempted to buy the orc box set. Really good. I can convert them for 40k

WoC have always been great for £/pts. Chaos Lord on dragon, a sorcerer and a standard bearer, some marauder horsemen, some knights, a monster or two...what more could you need?
This box set is amazing. If wouldn't already own 60 basic Chaos Warriors, I would have snatched it in an instant.
I just got this box & damn. I can play old World & AOS Spearhead. I’m loving its flexibility.
Its only a good deal if a) you want everything in the box, and b) you dont need to buy additional parts to make it work. The latter is more crucial given the lack of characters in these sets, and as you need heroes to game in Old World...
Chariots dont count as heroes, as they're the last place you want them.
If I didn't already have basically this exact same army I'd buy this box in a heartbeat.
Considering I;
1: Have at least a bit of interest in Old World.
2: Have friends who are building or already have Old World armies.
And 3: Have said I would likely go Chaos Warriors if I did play, its like GW were listening to me.
Just bought this because it'll do exactly what it says it'll do - get me 2000 points on the table for £88, thereby providing me with a relatively inexpensive 'in' into Warhammer Old World, something I've wanted to play for a while.

Got excited but the price is probably around twice the UK price from what I see online.
Actually Element Games only discount it by 15% which is £93.50. Considering however you do not get books or new models, not sure if this is really any better than the more expensive Bretonnia set if you want to get started in WH:OW (but that one is not even discounted).
Since I made this video they changed the price to a 15% discount, but then also changed the Orcs & Goblins box to a 25% discount. So I guess it kinda works out 😅

I'm only turned off from buying this box because i still have the old StD Start collecting that is basically just one half of this box + a chaos sorcerer on foot. Would be too much of the same stuff i guess.

Not only that, you can build TWO (2) Slaves to Darkness Spearhead forces for AoS out on this one box, and have models left over. Take the Champion from a Chaos Chariot to use as your Chaos Lord, replacing him this one of the Chaos Warriors. Grab 2x 5 more Chaos Warriors and five of the Chaos Knights. That's a Spearhead force, right there. Then do it again. Two Spearheads. £88. Bargain. Just add round bases. Best box ever? I'll say.

@@greywulfslair well, in my area most are already rotating into fantasy / old world and some were buying AoS products before that just to convert them into fantasy... they are selling their AoS armies even. If you think about it makes sense, old world fills a much wider niche while AoS is simply 40k game conversion with weird fantasy visual choices
@@jakobo88 'In your area' isn't the same as 'nobody', friend. Different groups can have very different experiences and sweeping generalisations don't do anybody any favours. Around me, for example, it's easier to get a game of AoS or Bolt Action than it is 40k. Old World is growing steadily, but Spearhead has brought in more new gamers to the group than anything else recently. Each their own, and it all benefits the hobby as a whole.

Chariot = chaos lord on chariot. He has a nice big weapon and a big pretty cloak, that's a chaos lord in my book.
probably better to go one unit of 5 chosen knights and 15 chosen warriors then 17 chaos warriors and 5 chaos knights 10 chosen knights in one unit is a bit of a points sink and an easy target. realistically you would probably drop some of the warriors and get some marorders for a meat shield in a tournament you would probably want to take tszich mark because you would probably get your wizard picked off my cannons or dragons early on and then blasted by spells and lousing one of those units without making any impact would e brutal
Its 2k points, but you will be very lucky ( or skilled ) if you win a game.

This is always the way. Its why GW added terms and conditions to its third-party sellers to prevent them from selling internationally and having discounts over a certain threshold.
It was possible in the early to mid 2000's to order online from an indie UK store and get the item for cheaper than what your local store was getting it at wholesale.
He'll, I used to get a 20% discount directly from gw back in the days of phoning an order in from a catalogue or from the pages of white dwarf magazine simply because I paid in pound sterling which had an 18-20% difference in real exchange rate versus the 40% price difference between currencies that gw used. Worked on an early iteration of their Web store too up until about 2004ish.

The old chaos warrior sculpts are much better than the new. Like other AoS sculpts the modern GW design process is way too busy and cluttered.

Iv been wanting to collect chaos warrios for fantasy 6th edition for a while, and this box may have pushed me over the box. Its easy 1500+ points.
Thanks GW for selling us old tat for premium prices. This is actually the best battalion as the cavalry and chariots are pretty "recent" and high quality. Those Chaos Warriors - every single one is defective as the mould slipped and so the fingers are not aligned 100% + they are from 2004 lmao. GW did not even given you a plastic upgrade sprue for them....
Here's hoping they do that for more factions. Admittedly, WoC is pretty elite, but still, if we can have elves, ogres, and ma away be if we're really lucky empire get 1500ish...

32 Chaos Warriors. Not to sound negative, but no one ever brings that in a 2000 points battle. 16 Warriors and 16 Forsaken would have been brilliant. Forsaken are more or less an auto-include for WoC. Their kit is sorely missing right now.

I don't know if Chaos Warriors are actually good, more like aggressively ok and more than ok for casual play. Still a lot better than State Troops. Other than that, yeah didn't think of the character chariots angle, so was keen to see how you'd possibly assemble 2k out of that battalion.
The only concern I have with old world is the lazy way GW added further nodels to Bretonia and Khemri beyond the initial box sets.
I wasn't going to support that kind of behavior.
If I only need the starter box however... how easy is it to adept the bases touse them in Sigmar and Old World simultaneously?

Not saying you're cheating, or that it invalidates the point of this video, but: the basic Warriors only come with handweapon/shield or double handweapons. No halberds in this box - getting them seperately would cost quite a bit extra. And the other kits in this box do not provide enough bits for a "conversion solution".
I see GW are clearing out the old 2009 fantasy kits, might explain why it's a deal. Just wait until GW start making new kits for the game.
