My Great Grandpa was Robert Dowdle. You are probably from the John Clark Dowdle line. They were brothers.
My 2nd Great-grandfather was Robert Hughes Dowdle born 1830, died 1907.
Robert Hughes Dowdle had a younger brother named John Clark.

What attributes of a guitar are important for playing this style? Short scale? Wide neck? Or just nylon strings?
I would say just a standard nylon string guitar. They have wider necks than steel string guitars.
