A Word for Writers and Sufferers of Writers Block

  • A conversation with Preston about his book-writing experience turns into a much bigger dialogue about the creative process. Jackie asks Preston about the obstacles he’s run into moving from poet to author, and Preston explains why he really doesn’t believe in writer’s block. The Perrys talk about battling perfectionism, receiving critiques, and inviting other people into the writing journey.

My whole career has been based around writing or at least involves writing as the main component. It is where I thrive, it's my happy place, but I have not been able to write for over a year. I did not even consider any of what was discussed here. It's brought a lot of clarity, thank you so much.

31:11 oh my gosh, so good! This combined with Jackie’s discussion on infertility, suffering, and Hagar, evokes Galatians 4:23 for me “His son by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but his son by the free woman was born as the result of promise.” Yes, we are given gifts and natural abilities that we can by might of willpower output into the world, and God will bless those works, just as he gave a blessing to Ishmael, but how much more will he bless work produced in obedience and dependance on him!

Ahhhhh, I'M SCREAMING. Jackie And Preston if you see this, thank you for it! I would definitely love to hear more from you guys on the creative space as a fellow Christian creative. I remember reading something where Jackie said about choosing to write Gay Girl, Good God artistically because sometimes with Christian writing we don't really get such. I'm paraphrasing and I hope i captured that properly. Can't wait to hear more of your thoughts on the writing space. Thank you for this!❤ #CantWait 🤞

There was soooo much about this conversation that was fruitful for me, but one of the ones that’s still ringing in my ears is (I’m paraphrasing) “perhaps you haven’t finished your writing because God is trying to produce a humility in you.” Its easy to get carried away in your gift and neglect the gift-giver. So many gems are in this one and it couldn’t be more timely.

I suffered from writer's block for a long time. Nothing helped me, I even went on vacation several times and kept my distance from my book project. Then I decided to attend a workshop for beginners. It was a course for inexperienced writers from novum publishing. For me it was like a new start. Many small details I had already forgotten or never used. Reminded me again of my beginnings and solved my writer's block. Maybe a workshop can be a help for others. It grounded me and I got my focus back. I was able to finish my book project within 3 months afterwards.

I really love the connectivity that you both are gifted with. Praise 🙌 Jesus you both encapsulate your audience by invitation & by this we're welcomed to take a front seat and glean. Also, this triggers in a positive way challenging our go to stances via fluidity vs stagnant and/or "dead-air" postures. Its also a given that we as people more often experience sites that in that specific space we may not even have clarity nor language to truly convey and to actually own or disown such encounters. As humanity we all do indeed have a voice, but that doesn't automatically equate with us having or allowing 🤔 ourselves the privilege and the right to have such releases. Although, both of you are ministers and very gifted ones at that, simultaneously you both also have teaching & coaching gifts that are also present & accounted for. I'm surely being Blessed 🙌 each time & opportunity I'm able to tune in. 🥺🧐😂☺😌

Is there anointing in what you wrote, did God guide it so that it will speak to my Spirit? This was a great episode and I love how the both of you always bring it back to a biblical foundation not just words because we can speak.

This episode blessed me in the first 10 minutes…… the writers field is filled with those who are popular not the ones who have the gift and by the time the readers realize they’ve been bamboozled …….the book has been brought the book is left unread and the author stays famous because the money has been spent. I’m a writer released my first memoir because God said. I didn’t want to do it but did out of obedience….. But the system is rigged 😢😢

For me, "Writer's Block" is about a lack of inspiration. I practice the mechanics of writing almost daily, but without inspiration, there isn't much substance. But then Jackie had to go and point out that the Holy Spirit sometimes makes space for humility . . . I need to seek God and really press in. TY for this teaching. 🙏

😂 writer's block is a real thing and so is the spirit of writing. You might say it doesn't exist but wait till you have to write a fictional story and you have to build each character and develop each scene and make it all make sense.
As a kid i used to write and that was when I discovered both writer's block and writer's spirit... I would just keep writing without knowing giving it too much thought and when i would read it later, the story and characters would fit in place. Sometimes when i discover some of those manuscripts i wonder that i actually wrote them.
The mind is beautiful and writing is the working of that muscle 😅
