Just to let folks know, I just found this book in a real, independent, bricks and mortar bookshop, which astonishingly had a number of copies displayed prominently. On arrival at the cash desk, it turns out that the bookshop manager is a huge fan of this channel, and made sure she ordered copies hot off the press. So haste ye to Waterstones in York, UK!

Editing tip I used in college.
As you’re going through when you hit a spot where you need to add something/check something write TK. Then you can search the document because the only word I know of with this combination is Atkins. That way you can finish writing without breaking your flow and add - in my case - citations to the text and you can plow through those at the end.

Or use a letter not used often or that commonly in your language. I know someone who always uses German Umlaute when they write in English for this exact thing. I use an ẞ when I write in English because that letter is also not used in that language. Some Symbols work for that too like [ ] { } and stuff like @ # all depending on what you write. Just keep it consistent.

"Whilst" won!!! I just got my copy from the helpful Amazon delivery van. I immediately set about searching for a whilst. I have spotted the first whilst in the Introduction. Congrats on the book.
We just completed a medieval wardrobe project that involved five shifts, five under dresses, five apron dresses, three tunics, and two pairs of pants (we actually made five pairs of pants...to have two wearable pairs of pants). Also, two tie on pockets, a haversack, seven belts, and seven pairs of turnshoes.

They will write notes in margins, dog ear page corners, highlight super relevant passages, store print outs and pictures between pages. In short, your readers will DESTROY this book with love, attention, and reverence. They will also accidentally on purpose steal it from libraries and happily pay the fine. I plan to find me a copy at Powells City of Books and donate it to the grade 6 to 12 Arts & Communications Magnet Academy library (I am the librarian) so my students can have access to this lore. She wrote a feature article for the school district newspaper about the production of one of the two play the theatre group did each year. The English teacher running the class wasn't going to publish the article because daughter insisted on the British spelling as that is how the theatre group spelled its name. She ended up talking to the school board and principal/superintendent over it. Funny story: My bra wire poked through(as cheap bras all eventually do)and was stabbing me. I was so pissed that I abruptly tore it off and threw it in my trash bin. After cussing out the fast fashion industry in my head, I sighed and dug it out. I reinforced the hole with stitches and saved a bra. 😂 I don’t think anyone will appreciate this story but maybe u guys will ❤️

I hope it will delight you that (near) future fashion historians will be referencing B. Banner (1898) and B. Banner (2022).
I'm imagining the following conversation in libraries or bookshops:
"I'm looking for a book on sewing by a woman called Banner."
    "Ah yes, we have two..."
"Oh, her first name starts with a B?"
"That would be both of them."
    "Uh... it's about Victorian dressmaking"
"Still two for the choosing. But looking at the publication date there's an early one and a later one."
"That should narrow it down, how long between the two books?"
    "124 years"

I really hope so too! I remember getting such guff from my law school professors, who wanted me to remove all the whilsts, amongsts, and compound words from all of my writing (Law has a rather big Plain Writing movement going on). According to them, no one writes or speaks like that anymore. I tried to argue "but hereafter is a GREAT word! and it's easier than writing 'after this point', or "from now on" '. Alas, I was told I'd have marks removed for keeping any of those "archaic" compound words in. Broke my heart.

Great to see this behind-the-scenes stuff. I well remember being almost glued to my desk to turn out that rough total of 500,000 words across five books including top-down rewrite of the first book. Rampaging applause on my part for the effort, especially filming a video about it at the same time. Also, enjoying your channel, and your details to history has been helping me with lines of research for my medieval-set fantasy WIP.

Hi there, I'm a frequent watcher and not so frequent commenter, but I wanted to chime in with my fervent thanks for your amazing hard work and constant inspiration. My grandmother introduced me to sewing as a child, although it was never a skill I cultivated. I've always been more of a knitter/crocheter than a sewer, until watching your videos. Your amazing creations, deep knowledge, and astoundingly thorough research skills have inspired me to begin seeing the value of (hand) sewing as a necessary skill to combat climate change and prevent wasteful habits of clothing consumption. As I began watching your content, I was convinced that I was really just "here for the pretty pictures," but now I'm definitely here for the practical knowledge of garment construction and maintenance. Thank you for teaching me nearly everything I know about sewing, and I cannot wait to start creating my own, at least partially hand constructed garments. I will indeed be going forth and making stuff (insert sparkles here).
    Thank you.

Bernadette, I'm going to get very serious for a minute but I want you to understand everything I say is a compliment for you and a criticism for myself. I am amazed everytime I watch a video by the infectious joy for sewing, history and being eco-friendly you manage to convey every single time...I wish I were more like you. I cannot sew a straight line to save my life. I tried quilting years ago and while I loved my products, I hated the process because my seams and stitching were atrocious. I am a perfectionist and my failures made me hate sewing. However, you've kindled a fire in me to have a go again...but first I must buy your book. I have 2 months that will be mostly my time outside of parapro trainings before the next school year starts. Your book is one if two non fictions I plan to consume over the summer, purely because of you. You share your passion in a form that makes even sewing bunglers like me feel maybe we really can sew. I pray good health, good sewing projects and further passion for your career upon you. Have a wonderful day and please never stop sharing your passion. There are too few people that make me feel the moon isn't too far to reach for.

I feel that if you want to be a manufacturer you can make perfection one of your goals. If you want to be a creator you have to allow space for your materials to speak, and allow the inspiration to breathe life into the work in the way it sees fit. This is really hard. Maybe it's easier for a genius but I would have no idea about that. This may make absolutely no sense whatsoever, but I have found that when I am able to get out of my own way I'm pleasantly surprised by the result.

I hated it at first but I learned to sew a seam correctly. The first time I got a garment back with no seams removed she took me out to a tea room for a high tea. I was 12 and so thrilled. So, when I run across someone who seems very interested in hand sewing and the knowledge of this lovely craft, I can easily share😊
Congratulations Bernadette, and thank you for this wonderful opportunity to get deep into hand sewing.
    Cheers and joy to you,
    Audri

    Bernadette,
I do not have enough adjectives to describe how happy I am for you. I'm so excited and can barely wait for my book to arrive! The daily workload you kept up must have been exhausting; the fruits of your labor will come to you tenfold. Congratulations, and an ear-splitting WELL DONE YOU! I am sending you a squishy hug.

My book just arrived in the mail! I was so excited to crack it open. There are so many practical tips I've never learned. I've been a self-taught "beginner" for a decade, and I am hopeful your book will help me finally propel my skills forward. Thank you, and congratulations on such a huge accomplishment!

This will be great, can not wait to buy, it’s so funny I bought Bertha Banner’s book on “Household Seeing with Home Dressmaking” even though I have been sewing for 49 plus years🙀 (I’m 59) even spent 6 years at collage on fashion designing and pattern drafting, but that was on modern fashion, now I am retraining myself on Victorian and Edwardian dress making as well as 18th Century. For anyone thinking there is no difference “Oh Boy” I have been learning so much more on hand sewing.
Stick to your guns at the end of the day those who are buying the book first will be your followers and from there it flows on from there. As to your book content filling out more than you planed this gives you an opening to write a follow up book.🤗🤗

Hey Barnadette, so I got this old Singer from 1882. It's German made and I'm having a freak out, it's amazing but needs work. It has all the old parts. I gonna be using some of your restore videos as reference. My sewing skills are not at your level but I wanted to let you know how much you've inspired me. ✨️ I bought it for 100$ , which surprised me. I'm filled with joy and excitement. 😀
    I'm also 100% buying your book :)
Hope you're well!! Thank you for the inspiration and confidence.!!

I've not yet finished the video, I've never bought a youtuber's book, I've done extremely little sewing and what I have done was on a basis of "uhhh needle poke fabric", but I just signed up for pre-order and I'm so excited to recieve my copy in a few days ♡ wish it were hardcover, but I skipped to the end to see you holding it and gosh it's still sooo pretty as paperback 🥺❤️

I ordered your book as soon as I finished your video, and am thrilled to have it in my hands. You are inspiring. However, I’ve been sewing for many decades, and I’ve learned that while many silks can be gently washed, and less than ideal mordants can lead to dye loss, staining or water spots happen after the silk has been dry cleaned and then washed. I have blouses and a skirt that I’ve been laundering for over thirty years with no adverse effects since I laundered the fabrics before making the garments. (I would not have been brave enough to try washing if I’d not attended a lecture by Clotilde.) Dry cleaning is a technique that’s not been around all that long.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge and spurring creativity in our wardrobes!

I think even for non-sewists, it's highly useful information to have. It's this that allows you to know when something is well made, and worth the cost. It also gives people an appreciation for the craft, and maybe if more people had that, I wouldn't get so many insulting "can you make this for me for $20?" questions.

    Dear Bernadette,
I just received your book this morning. I am so excited to delve into it. I would like you to know that you have given me such a new appreciation for the art of sewing. All my life sewing has been a mild chore and a means to an end. Quilting taught me patience, but you have taught me how to appreciate the slow pace and to enjoy every step along the way. Even ripping out a seam and redoing it has a whole new calm. Thank you for your videos, which got me through lockdown, and thank you for your gift of teaching. With your help, I have become so productive these past 2 years.💕💐

I'm writing a non-fiction epic fantasy, and you actually inspired a plot thread for it. It's set in a time period close to our world's renaissance, for reference. My main character believes himself to be incapable of creating anything beautiful, only causing the destruction of beautiful things. Despite this, through certain circumstances, he ends up learning to sew, to create delicate things, and heals. And this came from your videos! I've had so much fun researching different sewing methods throughout the ages, and give him interesting things to learn or projects to work on. Thank you!

    Bernadette,
I pre-ordered your book and have been able to read through it since receiving it. As someone with zero sewing experience, I found a manual, by-hand method to be most appealing as it doesn't require purchasing fancy equipment (a sewing machine). Thank you for being so detailed, the photos are perfectly done, it feels like I've received a book made by a person. I hear your voice when I read the words. You've covered literally everything I could ever imagine encountering in my mending journey (I have a drawer of items to practice on!). This is the most useful first hand-sewing reference I could have purchased ❤️

While I am excited for your book, the part of the video where they wanted to edit out your style of speech was upsetting to me. I can understand misspellings or actual grammatical errors... but you are the author, and your syntax and personality do not need editing. The way you speak is endearing, and the book wouldn’t have been you without it ❤️
