  • The Sigma MC-21 converter/adapter allows you to use the Canon EF mount lenses on your L-Mount cameras. Autofocus, Auto exposure, EXIF are all supported but does it really work?
In this review I'll show you the results I got after testing it with a few different EF lenses, from both Sigma and Canon.

As always, thank you for the video and taking the time out to post a video for those who may be interested in this adapter and canon lens,. Me personally, I went with the mc-21 for the SA mount only because I picked up an 85mm 1.4 Art lens for $600 (no tax) in the SA mount. I know that's a very good lens and the SA MC-21 mount adapter is much cheaper. I have the adapter already, just waiting for the Lens from Adoroma, which should be here on Monday. I will be using it on the my S1R.
Again I was not planning on using the adapte, as I have the native 24-105 and the awesome S 50mm F1.4 Pro, it's was only because I got a top rated used lens for such a good price.
Great video and thanks for your time and effort, I really like when you post stuff about the S Series, they have been very useful to me and I'm sure to others as well.
    Kind Regards
    PS dpreview sent me here.

hi mcsey2k1, yes one advantage of MC-21 is that it opens up opportunity to shoot with some cheaper lenses from another lens mount! Especially the second hand one.

I have used this on SL2 for canon 50/1.2L. AFS is slow but works somehow. I use it manually instead and apart from the annoyance of being shown an aperture of 1.3 at best in exit, it is a beautiful experience. Recommended.

Richard Im curious, are the compatibility issues with canon ef lenses the same between S1 and S1R? I rented the S1 a last week and tried some of my Canon ef lenses. They all worked. It was a little slow for focus but nothing crazy. The worst one was with my 85mm 1.8 ultrasonic version. It took it I would 4 tries to focus. Also these are some features greyes out like in time lapse mode u can only use exposure leveling in A, P and S mode. Not manual. Bracketing also doesnt work.

Have you tried the Sigma teleconverters with this? I'm seeing an consistent issue on the S1R when using MC-21, and TC-1401/2001 with good Sigma lenses. It drops to APS-C mode and that makes it take 20MP pictures, which negates the entire point of having a teleconverter. Furthermore, it also disables High Res mode, and due to dropping to only 20MP, it even disables 6K Photo mode :( Any tricks, or have you heard anything from Panasonic/Sigma about fixing this?

Today I got to test the MC-21 adapter on a S1R with: Canon 85 1.2L, Sigma ART 35mm, 50mm and the Bokehmaster 105mm 1.4. I'm sorry to say for anyone that's interested that the focus was horrible.. Not even close to what can be called acceptable.
It was a lot of hunting, pictures out of focus when taking shots at objects with good contrast etc. Compared to my Canon IV it's like going from a Ferrari to a Fiat 500. Its not even close.. Too bad as I had so high expectations for this camera and wanted to get one.
I did not expect it to be perfect by any means but the Sony MC-11 adapter is a huge improvement.

Great review Richard, I am currently using Sigma MC11 adapter for my Sony A73 for EF-FE. Autofocus for photo works great on peope/faces, however the AF is not as good when you are trying to shoot subjects as it starts to hunt a little. It could be due to the AF system of Sony, but when I am using the native Sony lens, it doesn't have this problem. In saying so, its still a great item to have when you have a mixed lens system.

The MC-21 dose not have a USB port and there are no Sigma L mount USB lens docs yet so there is currently no way to update the MC-21.
It might not be the converter that needs an update, Panasonic might be able to update the camera to open up AF-C.
As for lens AF speed, these lens are designed for DSLRs so will not match the speed of a lens designed specifically for Mirrorless as both are optimised to focus in different ways (mirrorless lens tend to have smaller/lighter focus groups and motors optimised for small rapid changes in direction).
They could possibly improve speed a bit with camera and lens updates though.

Sigma MC-21 EF to L adapter causes aperture to change depending on how close or far you are focussing on the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 L Macro IS USM lens. Very frustrating☹

    • @TheRealRichardWong
      @TheRealRichardWong  4 місяці тому

Does it actually change the actual physical aperture size? (I.e. do you see the aperture hole decrease in size) Or the size of the aperture hole doesn't change, it is just the aperture size reported by the camera change as you change focus to macro? If later, this is unavoidable because the effective focal length increases when you taking macro photos, and therefore the effective aperture size also changes.
I believe not all cameras report the effective aperture correctly on the display so you may not notice this with some cameras
