It's because the clappers/bells are half muffled. If you look at the clappers (painted red), they have two velcro straps which fasten a thick piece of leather to one side of the clapper creating the slightly dampened/softer sound at one stroke, from the other. We do this as a mark of respect for funerals and on Remembrance Sunday, it's a bit like bell ringing's version of flying the flag at half mast.

Shame I cannot ring bells at the moment, I have seen these bells before.
We're not ringing as a group atm, because of rising cases of the new variant. Just me on a solo or duo for a little while
