It is always a great pleasure hearing the church bells ringing. It gives some sort of freshness to the mind and heart.

it is because the clapper is not dampening the bell like with change ringing. With change ringing the bell is upside down ... and after a strike the clapper keeps resting against the bell ... resulting in dampening the sound. With dutch ringing (continental) the clapper hangs freely. it only touches the bell at the strike. so the bell can vibrate freely.

All chimes in England are ALL based on the major scale,
there are almost no differences except for the pitches ...!
There are the most varied chimes on the European mainland and each church tower has its own,
unique chime ...!
In the British chimes, one sounds like the other and that is the principle there ...

Very interesting to hear British bells ringing in this way, they sound magnificent! Change ringing is naturally highly important on cultural grounds, but maybe both ways should be used on some occasions?

This is very interesting! A very special thing, the biggest bell rings with a flying clapper and the others with falling clappers, something that happens in French too.
I really enjoy this type of ringing of change ringing bells, but it should not turn to normal. The bells sound great!
The first hit should not determine whether the clapper is flying or not. The clapper can be swung by the bell, or can get in resonance after the first hit. In both cases it will fly; if none of both happen it will fall. But normally the ringer can help the clapper to fly. I thought in change ringing it was the task of the ringer to make sure the clapper is flying.
It's a pleasure for me to hear them ringing in continental style. They sound much better like when the clapper hits the Bell one time instead of laying on the bell and stops the metal itself from swinging. This ringing method would make sense when you have only three or four bells to ring or not enough ringers. In case of Grantham i would use d, f, g, a, c" and d" . a perfect sounding ring of six. Or these six with a half tone lower.

this is in my opinion the most beautiful way to ring a bell, change ringing is a more advanced way of ringing, making it more a piece of music then a medieval sceam for people to go to church

Funny I was in Paris in 2017 and heard Notre Dame bells and thought it was the college youths raising the bells reading to ring

At 07:48 all bells strike at the same time !

That's how I'll do it next time I get in a change ringing rope room. My own personal belfry is not a change ringing belfry and I am in Britain.

If you see the start of this video, when the bell is stationary, there is a piece of wood (the stay) on the opposite side of the headstock to the wheel. Just beneath the bell is a device that the stay props up against when the bell is turned full circle, so you can stop the bell mouth up. Here we're only swinging the bells about 180∅, if you look at my other videos you can see when they're turning full circle, and before they start are propped upside down on their stays.

I'd be surprised if 1,2 clashing sounded well. In this style it is all about random clashes, you don't have control over the speed (shudder) and can't guarantee rounds or anything like them (more shudders).
I agree, standard ringing is 1000 times better than the trashy change ringing.

In England we dont normally ring this way, I dont know of any other video or 'continental ringing'.

I always wondered if British bells could be chimed like this - which is typically what we do in the US. I noticed that some of them were struck on the "wrong" side - how do you avoid that when you're raising them for change ringing? (comparing the tenor to the one on its left)
When you start to swing the bell you check it, so the clapper gradually swings ahead of the bell, then it goes up right.
@@DavidBraunton but how can you tell if it's right or not from the floor? I understand why you'd want it up right - just like in handbells when you want the clapper back before going for the strike. I just was curious how you could tell - and what is meant by "checking"? It's a bucket list thing to try a change ringing bell - but not many chances over on this side of the pond. :)
@@jeffwhite4227 when you start ringing the bell up, if when checked, it strikes as you pull then it will go up right (the clapper is running ahead of the bell); if it strikes at the opposite point of the swing from the pull, then it is going up wrong.
@@jeffwhite4227 I'll try and give an explanation of checking, with bigger bells, where the bell is getting on for 4-5' diameter, if effect you need to get the clapper strike the correct side of the bell before you start raising it too far (if you don't it will go up wrong and there's nothing you can do , except physically going up on the frame and moving the clapper over to the correct side).
The technique I was taught is to begin the bell swinging, one small pull to get it rocking, two big pulls and the on the fourth you attempt to stop the bell swinging, this slows the bell's swing down while the clapper swing is not effected (this way it lifts closer to striking the bell), by repeating the checking until the bell strikes it's usually possible to get the clapper to strike the upper side of the bell (as it swings), rather than the bell crashing into the 'stationary' clapper.
The clappers in the bigger bells at Grantham have eight a nylon or wooden shaft, meaning the weight of the clapper is mostly at the bottom, making it easier to check the bell and keep the clapper swinging and hence the bell goes up right. There are other clappers where the weight is spread along the length of the clapper, and here checking the bell doesn't have such an effect so these bells generally go up wrong, unless you have more people checking on the end of the rope. You have to bear in mind the biggest bell at Grantham is 32cwt, that's about 1625kg (never mind the headstock weight), I weigh about 73kg so the effect I can have checking the bell is limited. The further the bell is swinging the more kinetic energy it has, so checking can only be done at when the bell is only just starting to swing.

Our four tower bells at my church are struck via electric motor and hammers - the tower is too old and they can't swing anymore. But I'm very much into Handbells, which, of course, has its origins in Change Ringing! :-)

Its just down to physics, the clapper motion is slightly quicker than the bell, if the bell is checked right near the bottom, it goes up 'right'

I would like to propose this way of ringing for Easter simply because who hears this sound of bells, maybe it would have an Eden in his/her mind. So, European continental style sounds strange if rung in GB but it can be used in rare occasions. Not only change ringing! Let's change 🤣

Since we have returned to bell ringing as a group (but reduced in numbers), we have usually done this for the last five minutes of service ringing. We carry out English Change ringing on the lighter bells then finish with a burst of 'continental ringing' to finish.

Those stays are dangerous if they break they would break the bell or headstock

Owen, they're not. How would a shaft of wood break a solid metal bell or solid steel headstock...? Stays are made of ash and are designed to break if too much pressure is exerted on them. It's a basic fuse-like system. Designed to break if something goes wrong.
A wooden stay is no match for a headstock or bell.
Every ringer breaks a stay once.
My grandmother Karin broke MULTIPLE bell stays because she rang them so hard.
Too bad she died in 2011 from a deadly surgery mistake.

Also, even in Croatia is just continental way of ringing. But it's not that bad. Btw, it's not just in Roman-Catholic Church. It's Popular in Reformed(Calvin's) Church, Lutheran, Alt-Katholische and other churches, and in some cases, in some serbian Orthodox churches(not all churches)
