I am really happy for you, Lon. Because, in my case, my internet service was only a hobby. Nowadays, it is part of my job - as I work from home. But, for you, it is a crucial part of your job, and it can even get to your family - as the more time you are waiting for a video to go up, more stressed you will be, and possibly less time you will be free to spend that time with your loved ones. Really happy for you 😂
Oof, 10-12 up would be excruciating. I'm so glad we finally got multiple alternatives to Comcast where I live. Plus, my friendly, locally-owned ISP just permanently bumped up everyone's speeds for free (I was at 300/50, now it's 400/100) as a result of The Thing. Genuine competition in the marketplace is nice.
I've got my QNAP connected to a 10G network using Cat5e, I thought I would have to rewire the house as well but it connects just fine. Can't wait to see the rest of this. I'm really interested in how the Cable/Fiber Modem connects to the UDM PRO. Great video!
Just got Gigabit Pro ordered as well, had a site survey last year that came in $1,500 over budget (1700 ft distance), but they redid it last week and came within budget (despite extending that to 2600 ft since the closest sidecar was filled within the last year). Now with COVID upload speed is critical, even though we have two cable providers (RCN & Xfinity) neither has anything higher than 25 Mbps. I'm in Boston. The sales guy said they were on hold for installs, but the survey guy said he could knock it out in a day. The survey guy also says he deploys Ciena equipment, not the Juniper ACX2100 that I've seen posted by folks. He said they've done just one Gigabit pro in the last three years, most are Metro E connections provided by a person's employer (like hospital executives, etc). I was also wondering if you can get away from the $19.99 "router" charge as the bill shows, but seems like you can't just plug the fiber directly into the UDM-Pro, especially if they are also providing a 1G copper secondary. Let's see who gets connected first!
Hey, Lon! Hopefully congrats on getting the Gig Pro hooked up. You to make sure all the major stuff on your network can handle at least 3 to 5 Gig speeds. If I recall correctly, I read a Gig Pro install, where he was testing the line and actually got 3 Gig speeds. So he separated it out. 2 Gig for himself and 1 Gig as a guest network. Your experience may vary at this point, but it's a good idea to have equipment that can do at least 3. I look forward to seeing your next videos about all this. Good luck. And if you can, video the entire process, install too. So the lucky ones in the audience can drool over your good fortune.
I've heard from multiple other people who have Gigabit Pro that it is indeed a 3Gbps service. You should have a SFP+ port on the switch that Comcast provides capped at 2Gbps, plus a 1000BASE-T port capped at 1Gbps. They will have separate IP addresses, so getting the full 3Gbps will require the correct type of router and multiple TCP connections. One option is to use the 1Gbps port for your home/family network, then use the 2Gbps port for business.
Interesting timing, I installed a UDM-PRO at home just 2 weeks ago as part of a major nework upgrade. The UDM-PRO can be a bit finicky, and the firmware still seems a bit buggy. Mine doesn't show any devices connected directly to the UDM-PRO, it shows only stuff connected to the downstream USW-PRO switch. Otherwise, it has been nice to have a managed network at home and it simplified setting up a mesh network with 6 access points.
I also have the UDM Pro, good bit of kit. A few points, make sure if you start having WAN dropouts you update to RC 1.8.11 or newer with controller 5.0.8 as it fixes the SFP lockup bug that some UDM devices experience. Also cat5e should be able to do 10GBe up to 30M no issues.
I know here in Canada The local cable company won't allow a direct fiber connection except for enterprise customers. Turns out their access card at the head end authenticates against the serial number of the modem and that creates a key used for authenticating channel access on the card for the customer's account. The enterprise setup is a wall of equipment with redundant power supplies and redundant routers and redundant fiber connections and it's about $CDN3000 a month.
I end up putting the cable company modem into bridge mode and then connecting it to my own router because it still needs to authenticate using the modems serial number as well as do channel diagnostics the channel for the head end card.
I’m happy with my EdgeRouter X I got from UI. Lots of advanced features, flexible configuration via CLI. It’s almost like Cisco SMB router but at only $60!
Watch out for bugs with the UDM Pro a lot of issues over at Ubiquiti Forums. I just bought one had a lot of issues others were having.. Nice to see u did not experience any of these. Thanks for the videos..
Lon.TV Would not access internet on setup, had to perform a reset, would not upgrade to firmware backed up from cloud key gen 2+, error was firmware from cloudkey newer. Had to use older version. Disconnects and reconnects if the udm pro. Had to upgrade to 1.80rc11 firmware to stop this. Also local access to the UDM Pro only displays network app. Access or Protect doesn’t show up, logging into the cloud interface everything shows up normally. No vpn logs, even though my vpn migrated over and connects.. oh and the bluetooth setup prompt on the iphone app constantly appears even though the udm is setup. I had to turn bluetooth off on the app. I have been very happy with Unifi up until this purchase. But i am sure they will iron out the problems in upcoming updates... I am running beta firmware so i can accept its not perfect.. If you look online you’ll find others with these issues. Core functionality has been fine since the beta.. internet fine, wifi fine.. being connected via vpn works great. Just no log if anyone being connected. oh yeah dynamic dns does not work. At least my no-ip does not.... others same issues. Good thing Unifi protect backup migrates right over fine and everything works great with that..... just some things to look for.. Hope u do not run into these as I did. Do i like their products, yes... between the firmware and the controller software for the UDM-Pro that needs some more work... i had absolutely zero issues with the cloud key gen 2+.... hopefully this helps someone..
The biggest issue is the SFP+ lockup. Since you will be using this feature you should probably upgrade to 1.7.1beta community.ui.com/releases/UniFi-Dream-Machine-Firmware-1-7-1/0b75aa3f-bee1-4db1-892e-9030800c59cc or 1.8.0rc11 as they both include this fix. community.ui.com/releases/UniFi-Dream-Machine-Firmware-1-8-0/c4d07e0b-521e-4e81-af6f-b3bf41978c0f
I would like to get 10G in my LAN, not going to happen right now though... Edit: Can you ask them when 802.11ax might be supported on their APs? I really want to get one, but not with the new spec around. Multiple clients would be able to take advantage of that.

I ended up going with a Microtik 10G 8 port switch after starting with their Model 305(CRS305-1G-4S+in - CRS305-1G-4S+in) four-port 10G switch for $CDN220. The new one I just jumped up to(I upgraded my four NAS drives to newer 10Gb capable models) is the CRS309-1G-8S+in This gives me 8 10Gb SFP Ports for $CDN439. Probably half the price of the Unifi or QNAP. their 1208 is over $CDN808 for me here in Canada and its not a managed 10Gb switch.
So did you get the multi gig wan port to work correctly? I heard the udm pro is unstable if you use up both spf+ ports and also read some issues with certain spf+ rj45 transceivers with the udm pro.
Best of luck with the Ubiquiti gear. I switched away from them last month after using their products for about 5 years over to pfSense due to bugs, horrible support, nonexistent rma service, short product lifetime, and lack of features. Also I saw many issues regarding the UDM-PRO when I was still thinking of giving them another chance. There are many people who don't have any problems, and I didn't at first, but as time went on they started occurring. I've been more than happy with pfSense, it's been amazing so far. It’s a shame that the udm pro (better to say all UniFi routers) doesn’t „proper“ support dual wan. Only failover and weight isn’t as „sexy“ as being able to route specific traffic (from a specific network in your house dir example) through a specific wan interface.

$300 a month for 2Gbps!!! Shame on you Comcast. I pay $70 a month for fiber 1Gbps in Miami, FL.
UDM Pro SFP+ WAN port doesn't support GPON modules as far as I know. But you should be able to plug it directly into your fiber ISP's ONT with a 10Gb SFP+ ethernet (RJ45) module.

I never cared about upload speed. Never thought it would be an issue. Until now. My download speed with Comast was just wunnerful. Served its purpose. But then I wanted a VPN to another location. Set it up using a Raspberry Pi. Followed Lon's video. Works just dandy. BUT ... I now find I am being constrained by the upload speed from the server location. 5U/90D. Never thought about that or that it would make a difference. But it is certainly noticeable and sluggish. For now I don't have much choice except to live with it. Not worth $300 a month. Maybe Elon Musk will come to the rescue.
No it isn't Starlink will serve rural and semi-rural areas so 3 to 5 % of overall population. Not to mention being rather expensive because antennas won't be cheap.
How about instead of purchasing such devices you can make your own touter using pfsense. Its really simple when all setup. You can use virtualisation to run the pfsense router. I have my home server having a vm pfsense that has 4 ethernet nics pass theoughed to give me failover wan and lan
Hate to be pedantic, but... SFP modules are limited to 1Gbps. To get 10Gbps you’ll be needing SFP+ modules. Just to avoid you ordering the wrong stuff :)
Sounds like Elon Musk has your back bro! 400 bit down and 350 up is on its way through his satellite internet. Speeds to improve as he launches more satellites. Get on the waiting list and you can get yours at end of year.

I Hel* I Would Love Gigabit Up & Down But Just Not Going To Happen Where Im At..
Definitely - the shift to work from home has exposed the problem with coax based Internet. It just can't handle the uploads!
two many devices to serve the network
StarLink is coming 😆
No it isn't Starlink will serve rural and semi-rural areas so 3 to 5 % of overall population. Not to mention being rather expensive because antennas won't be cheap.
@J Fz We know it won't be offered in major metropolitan areas. That info is straight from daddy Elon
Don't forget turnaround time to a satellite is still a couple of seconds even at the speed of light!
@J Fz they are talking about 20 ms
@J Fz starlink
How about instead of purchasing such devices you can make your own touter using pfsense. Its really simple when all setup. You can use virtualisation to run the pfsense router. I have my home server having a vm pfsense that has 4 ethernet nics pass theoughed to give me failover wan and lan
I don’t have time to manage it
Hate to be pedantic, but...
Great video but the title is a little misleading.
Prep...
Your wasting your money with qnap 2.5gb, microtik has 10gb at a cheap price
Hurry up and change the UI to dark mode! Damn. Blind us why don’t you...
