    I should have stated this in the video: fiber optic cables strands can be dangerous if not handled correctly. As many of you have noted they can result in painful transparent splinters or worse create respiratory issues. The strand I demoed was thrown out when the video was done and the other leftover cable is safely taped up to prevent any injury. The technician was a pro who safely handled the cable and cleaned up after the work was done. I did think you all would find it interesting to take a look inside the cable just because it's magic to me that this even works given how tiny they are.
    Also to answer a few other questions: No there is no data cap on Gigabit Pro. And yes it's expensive but what's even more expensive is dealing with the slow unreliable connection that I have now :). The faster speed will result in better reliability and less wasted time when uploading to the multiple platforms we're delivering to now. Also Gigabit Pro is a metro-ethernet product and not a shared fiber technology like GPON.

      Lon.TV I have in the Telecommunications industry for several decades and have almost exclusively worked in the fiber optic portion of the industry. I started off working as a fiber splicer back before there was such a thing as a field portable fusion fiber splicing machine. When I first started splicing fiber it was more of a "black art" than the relatively simple near fool proof and easy process it is now today using a latest generation of fusion splicing machines.

      I'm curious....if your neighbors really wanted to get the same service, would they also have to pay the $1000 installation or would they piggyback off of the work that you already had Comcast do down the driveway?

    • @LonSeidman

      I think that's the standard charge. They'd have to run fiber into each home, splice, etc. Comcast's cost would be less of course :)

    A word of caution, now that you exposed the fiber strands by opening the jacket, if you were to cut a piece of the strand, the cut pieces can become a respiratory hazard. Technicians that work with fiber terminations take precautions against this.

    The CWDM looks like it might be a passive one, meaning it uses no power. They're pretty neat, they only use prisms to filter wavelengths of light. If it is passive, your SFP will be hardcoded with the specific wavelength assigned to your connection.

      Looks like an ordinary splice can to me. so the fiber coming towards the house was spliced into dark fiber in the main line that runs into the splice can.

    Hey Lon, I got fiber decades ago and I've never regretted it. Having fiber actually relieves that
    aggravating bloat I experienced, and it also helps with system blockage and slow "downloads" where I'd have to sit
    and wait and wait and wait for the "download" to finish. Adding fiber, for some reason, also made my stool feel softer,
    which was an unexpected bonus. So, for me, adding fiber was a life altering positive decision.

    Great series of vids that you're making on Comcast's Metro-E product.
    - Fiber is always referred to in pairs, not strands. Because 1 strand in each pair is used for TX (transmission), and 1 strand is RX (receive), and you need 1 pair (RX + TX) for any service. Can't provide service with 1 strand...
    - You have 12 pairs to the end of the street. (2:45). 12 home connection capacity.
    - Dark fiber refers to the "unlit" pairs of fiber. Your pair will be "lit" and in use, using lasers to sent photons. (2:57)
    - To your home they pulled 3 pairs. (5:12)
    - The cable is rigid, because the fiber is glass, and the glass can break or shatter (5:24)
    - Yes, you can carry Tb of data if you use all of the wavelengths. Its the same basic fiber used around the world, and under oceans, with more protection. (5:52)
    - The fusion splicer ensures that the glass fibers are perfectly aligned and then spliced. Alignment is important to make sure you have no loss of signal. This fiber is single mode. This splice is also referred to as a "glass-through" connection, which if done right should have no signal loss. (7:35)
    - It is a single cable. Most importantly, it's effectively a continuous cable. A fusion splicer is much better than the old school pucks used to polish multi mode fiber, where alignment isn't as important. Single mode fiber is a straight shot down the fiber. Multi-mode light bounces off the the inside of the bigger fiber wall, so alignment isn't as important. (8:10)
    - CWDM is Coarse Wave Division Multiplexer. It's cheaper and more suitable for this work than DWDM. Correct, CWDM multiplexes multiple individual signals onto different wavelengths within a single pair. (8:49)
    - SFP+ will terminate your pair, not a strand. (9:46)
    - Use that Ubiquiti router to route between the 2Gb and the 1Gb connection. You should be able to setup bgp which would give you redundancy if you lose one link but not the other. Which is unlikely because typically the fiber will be cut and you will be SOL, but maybe if they make a config change on their end, Comcast would only break service on one of your links. Again, unlikely since Comcast isn't going to make changes, unless they are grooming links in the region. (9:58)
    -2.5Gb is supported over CAT5e for the full 100 meters. This page has a great pic. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2.5GBASE-T_and_5GBASE-T. 5 and 10 Gbe over CAT5e is distance dependent. I would get your CAT5e runs certified/checked, a poor termination will result in signal degradation. Certified CAT5e terminations may let you run higher speeds. See if Fluke will let you borrow a network tester. (13:50).

    Interesting stuff. FYI, you can also use Cat 6, 6a, and 8.1 to get 10 Gbps or more. I had ethernet added to connect my office to my basement (where I have a tech rack) and used Cat 8.1. It supports 20-40 Gbps from what I have but is nice because it is fully compatible with normal ethernet RJ45 connectors. That is, I have a Cat8.1 wall plug in my office and a Cat5e legacy ethernet cable directly connected to it (for now).

    The CWDM is usually to aggregate multiple customers down one set of fibers. I don’t believe they mix your TX and RX

    • @dionrowney
      @dionrowney 4 роки тому

      You are correct. It essentially combines different wavelengths of light on one fiber. The send and receive on one cable lon is thinking of is called BiDi and uses BiDi SFP transceivers. This is the technology my local provider uses and essentially allows providers better utilization of fiber cables as only 1 is needed. I am actually surprised they are using 2 strands right to the house, but there may be a 1 gig limit on BiDi preventing this.

    • @zesta77
      @zesta77 4 роки тому

      Yes... The TX and RX are the same wavelengths just like a "normal" fiber connection. The SFP modules on each end of the circuit need to be specialized to run on the specific wavelength and then are MUXed together to run up to 18 separate 1 or 10Gb/s channels down a single pair of fibers. You have a MUX/DEMUX on each end that breaks them out into the different wavelengths. These are typically passive. There is also DWDM that uses more expensive hardware, but lets you run a bunch more channels.

I emailed Trendnet and TP-Link right after the 2.5G spec was released and suggested they make some full 2.5G switches (as opposed to 1G with a 2/5/10G backbone port). The SFP+ port provides the full 2Gbit/s service to customers with capable equipment. if there is no datacap, - he should become a small datacenter. I bet in the future homeowners will be able to host rack at home and make some extra money. Besides hosting it home, - it can become the heat source for hot water or heating.

    Comcast does fiber to the node so what they do is send all the internet traffic and tv to a fiber node then that gets pushed out onto the coax and to 100+ houses.. thats the difference from comcast to Verizon’s fios verizon ran fiber to the home like you have and up till now comcast did coax “the last 1/2 mile”

    Comcast Gigabit Pro 2000 Mbps2000 Mbps $299.95/mo. I wish I could afford that, the website says they still have data Caps? The site doesn't have any information about being exempt on this plan, it could be there but burried.

    10:18 “…too much bandwidth” - *IT DOES NOT COMPUTE!*
    Additional to warsurplus' caution, be very careful not to get any exposed fibers stuck in your skin, especially under a fingernail. It could be _very not fun_ for a long time. Thanks again.

      it's too expensive. but when those guys are owning those poles, - you cannot do much about it. unless you'll have some kind of contract with the city and you will build your own network next to comcast/att. But I can understand comcast as well, cause you paid once to connect your service and you will not be probably responsible anymore for any cable damages (except last 100-300 feets). But when you are maintaining your fiber network on day to day basis you would need to have funds to recover it after any kind of disaster or local issues.

      Holy cow, that's crazy expensive! I pay $85 a month for AT&T 1gb fiber. That's my full cost with all local taxes included. On speedtest, I get 900mb down, 850mb up.

    Is what you need to do is run all CAT6 to your house and that will run 10gig for your network and take a look at the unifi store.ui.com/collections/routing-switching/products/unifi-switch-16-xg 10gig switch. for $600 for that speed is a steal. You have a choice to make if you want to run 10gig Rj45 or Fiber throughout your house.

    Don’t feed the beast. They should offer other speeds so you don’t have to pay $300+ per month for service.

    • @CantankerousDave
      @CantankerousDave 4 роки тому

      You're looking at it backwards. Why would they offer him cheaper service when he's already forced to pay them $300/month? When another service that offers fiber is finally able to get its foot in the door in his area, Comcast's prices will plummet. They know they have people over a barrel and will milk them for every dime for as long as they can. De facto monopolies suck.

    Imagine finding out a couple years later that Concast was shamed into not using the scam term of 10g internet. They didn’t provide that service. I just found out recently that they have been scamming my mother-in-law. They told her that she had 5g fiber for awhile and that she had to upgrade to 10g. They told her that her 10g internet service needed a different modem because the wire connector was different. Once She told me about all of this I was immediately suspicious of this. I went to her modem to find a black modem with a coaxial cable connected to it. I knew they were con artists but whoever did her service is gonna here it from me and a lawyer. I have asked my wife to find out how long they have been charging her for fiber and how much more they were charging her. Concast is pathetic and shameless POS!!
