Honda ATC fuel tank weld up!

- A job I have been putting off for a while but one that needed to be done as the little ATC has a job to do moving the equipment around at the new workshop.
Now some may say that you can't weld fuel tanks.....well, it seems that you can, I have welded many over the years with complete success. In fact, a few years ago an insurance company asked me to weld up a fuel tank on an accident damaged Toyota Hilux as a new tank was no longer available.
Now this doesn't need to look a pretty job, it's just a functional vehicle so the fuel tank just needs to be sealed & last a few more years....
Cheers for now

Well done Andy !!
Really enjoying these Honda ATC videos! As I mentioned before, I am planning on getting mine running again later this winter. I've read where some have cleaned most the inside rust by putting aquarium gravel inside the tank, duck taping the fill hole, wrapping towels or old blanket around it, then putting it in the dryer on non heat tumble. Good DIY home owner method if you don't have a shaker.
Genius.....I wonder if the wife will let me! Lol More ATC videos to come in the New Year just as soon as the new workshop is operational.....watch this space! Cheers Andy
I used to remove all caps plugs and taps from petrol tanks leave them to evaporate take them outside and apply a long reach blow torch to the filler, sometimes there was a whoosh but more often than not a feeble little bit of flame for a couple om minuets. Road tankers on the other hand got steamed out over night before work commenced on them.
I miss riding the old 3 wheeler. Had so much fun but then the government banned the sale of them in the U.S. Too dangerous they said and ATV's became 4 wheelers, quads. Nice vid Andy!
Cheers Ozzstar, yes, I had great fun riding it yesterday using the trailer to move some workshop gear to a storage shed up the garden :-)
Good job on the welds.
Cheers Frank, not my best welding but did the job :-)
@@AndyMechanic you did fine. You keep that puddle glowing and she will always fill in and seal..
What we would call a good field repair...job done...pity you haven't got a tool girl today Andy...you could have demonstrated your best grinding technique...😂😂
Lmao! Lol
A job even ivin will be proud of. No parts required lol
Haha! Very true, that's Ivan's motto now! Lol Have been using the ATC this morning to move a load of boxes up to the storage shed.....so much fun. Seems to be running rich at idle & no brakes make it interesting with a loaded Trailer but it worked just fine & got the job done super quick. Cheers Andy
@@AndyMechanic think your work shop will benefit from a sonic cleaner for carbs exct
Most definitely....it's on the list....but first I need to get the workshop moved.....so far I have driven 3,000km moving the gear....and I'm about half way! Lol
Put that tank coat on the inside
Andy thanks much for the MIG welding video. I know I asked you if you would do one. Didn't expect it to be so soon. I think if I purchase a MIG setup I could do that definitely with a little practice. Cheers mate and Happy New Year. Eric O is cringing right about now. Did you view his torch episode video? Quite exciting. I'll give it a go. 🍻
Yes, if it's the one where the shock absorber fired out a jet when he was cutting through the piston rod? Awesome :-)
Good Job Andy, I thought for a moment you were missing Yorkshire tea so much you were trying to make your own Tea bag?
Haha! I do miss Yorkshire a lot....one day I'll go back :-)
I thought fuel tank not rust inside :O
Are you going to grind the weld and check it for leaks in a another video if so can't wait
Nop. I don't grind my welds ;-)
I was just wondering if you had planned on refinishing the tank to show how that is done. I still think it was great to see how to do this thank you again
No, not at the moment. Just had to get the bike up and running as I have work for it. Probably in the future at some point. Lots more ATC videos coming in the New Year :-) Cheers Andy
Did you wield up the inside where you cut I see the benefit of both lap and butt joints if you spread out you heat more less chances for deformed
Haha! Yes, but only after I finished the video....I had forgotten! Lol
It happens to all of us not just you my friend
