Honestly the word “woke” has been thrown around so much it holds little to no weight now. A show, movie or game could just simply have a POC or LGBTQ+ character and it’s instantly deemed “woke”. As long as the media that’s being put out is genuinely good idgaf what the character is
People who throw “woke” around as an insult are wrong by default. Diversity (which is not even its original meaning of “woke”, but is being used as such) is not a bad thing and hopefully never will be again. Sure there are movie directors and game devs who go overboard with it, but even though people constantly cry about the gaming industry being ruined, its always the same 3-4 AAA companies who made garbage games before making them diverse anyway.
Two females holding hands in the background of a comic book = Woke + kajillions dying in the west and artists quitting to leave for thriving non woke utopia Japan apparently.
Agreed. Ppl on one hand point at a movie and cry sexism and ppl on the other hand point at the same movie and cry woke. We be better off if ppl juss stfu.
The whole UA-cam Culture War media discourse has made it so impossible for any upcoming projects to be explored and introduced to the public by spewing out and focusing on hate and labeling everything “woke” if they even see one woman, a black person, or an LGBT character being introduced without even knowing the character yet. Listening to these outraged neckbeard weirdos has made me really depressed and obligated into trying new things which is why I had to unsubscribe from those guys and move on and enjoy the things that I like which actually worked out for me. And one more thing there is content for everyone to enjoy out there.
Exactly!!! This UA-cam Culture War ruined internet criticism and discussion. Nowadays you can't have a proper media analysis, discussion and criticism without some brain-dead left wing or right wing moron jumping in and spewing his nonsense about politics. I believe we have to gatekeep these people and disregard their opinions. They want politics out of media? Then how about they throw out politics out of their rotten brains first?!
It sucks because I like to talk critically about media but now so much of the discourse is permeated with "wahhh wokeness wahh" and it just makes engaging in these conversations on the internet so toxic and annoying.
I truly cannot stand the people who call everything new that releases “woke garbage” it’s the most moronic way a person can criticise a piece of media.
It’s genuinely a brain rotting narrative, and people who make it their lifestyle don’t even act human, they’re so aggressive for no reason, have no individuality, and have such a doomer paranoia personality and convince themselves that everyone around them are woke out of world aliens trying to mind control them, when the majority of us are just trying to live life and not bother anyone, and simply wanting to be represented is apparently the biggest sin to human kind to them, no one is perfect though, but these kinds of people are an enigma lol
@stellviahohenheim I play games and watch movies to enjoy myself, not complain about what people and cultures are represented, because it doesn’t bother me.
If Star Wars, Alien or Kill Bill came out today, all these people would hate them, I guarantee it but since they're classics, there's nothing woke in them apparently
@@lightskinnedlarry728 those probably are a minority/exception most people liked it, i atleast never seen someone that i know called it woke nor internet people
Yeah, I've been seeing those stupid "it's woke" things everywhere. Most of the time they're just nitpicking, not giving proper criticism, and just lying about a game/movie in bad faith. They say modern games/movies are ruined but in all honesty those types of people are why we can't have nice things when I comes to entertainment.

@@TheCapitalWanderer I don't think that's what he meant by saying people can't enjoy things anymore of course you can still be critical about a product amen is when people criticized everything and everything without looking the positive on what this product can have.
I’ll tell you a big one. Buzzwords. And Buzzphrases. People rely on them too much, it stops them from thinking critically. UA-camrs and their viewers need to stop relying on them and actually learn the shit they’re talking about.
Woke, modern audience, problematic, racist, sexist, copaganda, DEI, etc etc. All these words and phrases mean nothing anymore to me, because when you use a word or phrase long enough it looses its sting
Bullshit man. Buzzwords have been around in the internet since the beginning, and everyone’s still going to use them when criticizing garbage. The buzzwords helps them think critically without sounding like intellectual.
@@leviticusprime4904There’s no way racist sexist modern audience & problematic mean nothing to you if everyone still used those words in the correct meanings and whatever.
Ita not just media discourse But modern online discourse in general Nowadays it feels like evryone wants to feel morally, socially, or politically superior they just dont let people enjoy things anymore
I was on this stuff before Critical Drinker came around. I was subscribed to Sargon of Akkad and other channels in the Skeptic community. After life led me off of UA-cam for a couple months, I came back realizing the whole point of the discourse is to get (at the time) pre teen nerds like me to view the presence of black people or women as a red flag for bad movies.
Here's my take 1. the "woke" is black slang to be aware of your surroundings and what's really going on. Woke doesn't mean women or minorities 2. We always had shows and characters who are diverse they been around since the 60s or 70s Hell even in black and white films. I grew up with shows like Little bill, El tigre, justice league, vampire in Brooklyn, boondocks etc. There are good shows and movies to this day that feature diversity however there are shows that make diversity in authentic and make unnecessary changes to be diverse such as race or gender swapping even though they can use other already established characters or simply make a new one. As long as it's authentic and feel natural that's a sample of good diversity.
@@JibaJaba funny but that's our slang people took and corrupt it into some other nonsensical BS. Also if words change all the time does Nazi mean someone who disagrees with you? Does feminism mean angry women who want to diminish/discriminate men? Are transwomen women especially in sports?
To add to this, there was a weird phenomenon that happened around the 2010’s. “Woke” and “fake woke” were heavily used terms. “Woke” meaning, to have awareness of typically unseen things in the world (typically societal issues) “Fake woke” meaning you just act woke At a point people started using “woke” in a sarcastic sense, as a replacement for “fake woke” After a while, the sarcastic sense kinda became the default. And here we are! Also to add to your list of diverse shows….American Dragon, Juniper Lee (I forget the full name), Maya & Miguel….shoot, Jimmy Neutron did that awesome episode where Libby discovered she had Egyptian ancestry, and then they gave her twists the rest of the series *and Sheen was Hispanic*
@@Achieme1. While what you said is true it doesn't mean the word hasn't been changed over time to gain a completely different meaning to where it's become a political term along with slang 2. an example of a word changing over time is "gay", it used to just mean being happy but now it can mean both that and being homosexual. Everything you listed could count as a change in definition since you gave them definitions that are associated with them by some people since those are words that gained meaning as insults from your point of view
words can not explain how much of an annoying dumbass this guy is, I seriously wish Colin could get in a call with him and just wipe the floor with how stupid all of his critisims are
I hate how people claim to “wake up” when in reality they gloss over or parrot things because it’s what media is supposed to have you say/do. They also can’t seem to understand that just because someone supports moral principles, that dosen’t mean that that community can’t do wrong because they aren’t bigoted or racist in their mind because they stand for something inherently moral.
I think you bring up a lot of good points. I think the biggest problem today, and it’s an issue I fall into sometimes, is that you need to watch something and form your own opinion. You can hear as many takes on something as you want, but if it doesn’t follow your preconceived notion of what you believe you won’t watch the counter argument. But if you watch something you can come to your own thoughts and properly take a stand on it. It’s just hard to keep up with media nowadays and people want the spark notes to save time.
@@donborjuto7321 waaaaaaah he said something I don’t like, so im just gonna call him a leftist. Don’t worry jr. This is a grown up conversation for people who have something called “critical thinking skills.” I know it’s something you don’t totally understand, but you’ll get there someday.
@usernamesmeannothing is not so much hypocritical, more so the pendulum is swinging back. again, back in 2016 is when the other side of extreme says everything is "racist" and now it's the other other side of extreme says everything is "woke". And it will go on and on switching and swinging back to back until something stop it which is impossible
I mean, not really? I’m sorry to say but I think that’s kind of a strawman, nobody genuinely, or at least very few people, believed everything was racist.
@@MichaMundyidk, I don’t quite see it as a pendulum swinging back. But let’s say it is a pendulum, all I have to say is, I hope not, or if it does? I hope the backlash isn’t big or at least we take 2 steps forward. I think that to pose these two as just “two sides of the same coin” or “a pendulum” creates a false equivalence between the two political sides. Like sure the “woke” side or whatever may be annoying sometimes, but it’s much preferred to the other, which is just “I want to harass minorities and complain about minorities in my media”. Which is honestly what a lot of people have been complaining about since 2016, although it was a lot more subtle back then generally, they couldn’t openly say that as loud as they can nowadays. I also think the reason people complain about “fence sitting” when it comes to takes like this, is that it’s overall a false equivalence to compare the two sides. One side may be annoying sure, but they don’t want to just remove minorities from being seen or possibly just even existing.
I mean, not really? I’m sorry to say but I think that’s kind of a strawman argument that a lot of people participated in, nobody genuinely, or at least very few people, believed everything was racist. However, I do agree that it should have been made MUCH more clear that even if a movie is somewhat problematic, that this shouldn’t a moral indictment on the person. Criticism shouldn’t equal condemnation of a person or people who like the movie, and that should have been made much more clear by the “everything is racist” side as you say.
I really appreciate you calling out both sides of the culture war. I get it’s because the right wing side of that shithole is louder after Elon musk bought Twitter, but the overfocusing on them as of late is just going to make it so that the left side of the culture war will eventually be the overly loud ones. As for your brain rot culture thing, I’m going to use my mom as an example since it’s easier to use irl people over online idiots (and am actually giving her a pass on this since she doesn’t partake in these kind of discussions). A lot of people don’t really care what makes something work, just if they enjoy it or not. This is why you hear things like it’s not that deep remarks come from, because they just want something to entertain them. That itself is fine, but the problem is that due to how the internet is they treat their opinion as fact, which leads to the “brain rot culture”. For superhero’s, I’ve noticed a lot of people just lose interest in things if the media is highly fantastical. That’s fine, since it’s just their opinion, but the problem is they put that kind of media down like you shown earlier. This is something I’ve observed with older members of my family. Hopefully my dumbass doesn’t word this in a pretentious way.
Something i absolutely HATE about media discourse now is when people consume literally anything that takes more than 1 braincell to understand they act like they are the media literacy messiah and send death threats or harassment to anyone for having a different opinion on the story or characters Another one is ppl saying "art is interpretive" but getting pissy at any other interpretation than their own
I remember wanting to watch the Barbie movie with some friends from college for a while, because a lot of people in my friend circle saw it in theaters and said it was really good. I also wanted to watch it with a female perspective so that way I didn’t make any judgements that were founded purely on my gender. While watching the movie, I was in a discord call with one girl who hated the movie, and two who loved it greatly. I personally didn’t get into the movie (though I really wanted to), and was told I would never “get it” because I’m not a woman. The girl who disliked the movie was told off because she apparently was “ignorant to women’s issues” and the two have had beef ever since. I wished just disliking a movie didn’t somehow mean that the individual is a bad person or something. Like, I’m happy for the people who enjoyed Barbie, I just didn’t get into it like a lot of other people, as did my friend. But in this day and age, apparently not liking a piece of media says something about your morals
And then there's the opposite problem where you say you really like something, only for someone else not to come in and say "well I don't like it, there for it's bad or mid." I absolutely despise those kinds of people.
THIS!!! I am so happy that you made this video. Now I wanna add a few more points of my own and wanna add on to your points: *Creators will Ignore Vital Criticism:* We should also bring up another problem with criticism. Because extremist makes the dumbest criticism possible and don’t know how to be civil, a creator with a functioning brain would look at it and say something like "Well that was stupid and I won’t listen to it." However it’ll get to a point where people will just straight up ignore *ALL* criticism because they’re just gonna bunch it up with those brain rot criticisms and why wouldn’t they. That’s why it’s important to put your thoughts into what you say. *A Lose Lose Situation:* This is the thing I have always been annoyed with. No matter what a creator does, an annoying and loud group will *ALWAYS* find a reason to tear it apart. For the right, if you make a woman character that isn’t just a walking smash object, your character is just a "GiRl BoSs." For the left, if you give a woman character actual flaws and give her a point of conflict in a story, you’re writing woman wrong and apparently are just a misogynistic douche (I’m looking straight at you Lily Orchard). It’s so annoying and it kills creative freedom. Speaking of which… *Death of Creative Freedom:* Because of the whole dumb culture war and what not, whatever a creator does and whatever design choices they have can be immediately judged with no sense of remorse. For example, April O’Neil has been race swapped many times and no matter what it gets nothing but hate. It’s one thing to not like a design, but if your only reason for hating it is just "ShE’s BlAcK" you need to take a shower! Almost every time a character is race swapped, it’s always a different iteration of the character. It would’ve been weird if say the character was white in one season but then was black in an another season, but they don’t do that. Plus even when a character is race/gender swapped, people usually do it just for fun. That’s what these people don’t understand, that someone can race and gender swap a character just for the heck of it. Now let’s get to my final point… *If it’s bad, Politics shouldn’t matter:* Y’all know exactly what I mean when I say this. I’d say a TV show, Movie, Video Game or whatever is bad, politics shouldn’t matter. The only thing that matters is good writing, and that should always be the case. If you’re gonna critique media, put your petty biases and personal political views aside for the time being. Anyways that’s all the stuff I really wanted to say. Apologies if it’s super long. I just really wanted to get this off my chest 😅
I personally are in left-leaning spaces all the time and rarely do people complain about a game not being diverse. There are people who do say that GENERALLY games aren’t very diverse and that it is a problem, but usually don’t go after individual people (note that there are exceptions to this but not nearly to the same extent as in the right). There is a massive difference between noticing systemic issues and going after every individual. And there is also a difference between boycotting a game just because you disagree with it and doing so because buying the game would fund terrible causes (Hogwarts legacy being a prime example of this, with the money funding literal torture camps (I wish I was making the up)).
Nah so long as Synthetic man doesn't talk about wokeness, he actually does good reviews surprisingly. Though he does occasionally have weird takes even outside wokeness, like his Doom Eternal video, I sort of get it, but he worded it so weirdly
Honestly both Woke and anti woke people are annoying especially when they don't understand the word. What matters IMO is if it's entertaining and the diversity is authentic/natural
@@Achieme But that's the thing, what's "authentic/natural"? Black people and woman just be existing. All that really matters is entertainment, if companies wanna make random characters black, gay, etc... For no reason I don't really care as long as the game is good
@@e-man7418 take it this way. Black, female or LGBTQ characters are fine. If the character is original as in brand new meaning no race, gender or sexuality swapping of an already existing character it's original. Let's take Batman caped crusader when they gender swap penguin that's inauthentic especially when bruce timm said Batman didn't have enough female villains which is a flat out lie. Characters in Overwatch or Arcane are original, natural and authentic because the characters and world building they also don't make their race, gender or sexuality their entire personality. If Nintendo were to make a Metroid movie that's fine cause samus was always a woman, if they were to make her a midget because body positivity even though she tall AF that's inauthentic. If marvel were to make miles morales or Black panther trans or asexual despite it never being hinted or them being established relationship that's some inauthentic BS. Another example is if you were to race or genderswap a character when there's a character that could've been used. For context if WB were to make a superman movie and they made Clark kent black even though they could've used Val zod or Icon that's not authentic
Yeah I find both sides to be insufferable, at this point. It's only the people in the middle, who don't give a shit either way, that I fuck with. Because they're pretty normal and calm people.
@@Gamerjedi-xt5rk exactly if metroid or bayonetta were to get a movie you got one side being like "Finally some female representation I'm glad we got our first strong independent woman, I hope my fan fic of her being part of the LGBTQ is true" then you got the other side who is like "why are they making Samus a woman I'm sick of this woke garbage" even though she's always been a woman
The first time I started questioning the anti woke movement was when the grifters started calling MJ from the Spiderman game ugly. I never thought she was ugly, she was quite normal and plain. I was so confused why they hated her just because she looked plain. Like, what about her as a character? Then the Critical Drinker made a video on the Boys season 4 without watching it first. And shortly after that point, I had completely left the anti woke movement and became apolitical. I agree that there some things that are woke, but I really don't think it's as bad as it's made out to be. Both the anti-woke and pro-woke people are absolutely insufferable pricks, and I am tired of this stupid culture war.
the demonizing of “woke” is crazy. making DEI a bad word is sad when it just stands for “diversity equity and inclusion” i’m black and i grew up only looking up to white heroes and characters. now all of a sudden i finally have some representation to look up to and people are upset.
Yeah I hope it’s a vocal minority, the extremes of both sides are doing more harm than good. People see the communities and think people who play games are all fucking weirdos 😂😂😂
I lost respect for people like critical drinker after this The Boys Season 4 Review. I literally forgot I was even subscribed to him so I unsubscribed.
I'm the same way for Geeks + Gamers and Yellow Flash. All they do is bitch and focus on the negatives and ignore good entertainment. Hell, they're called Geeks and gamers and yet they aren't even talking about Space Marines 2 or Transformers 1, both good products that they claim they want and never get. They're just whiners at this point
@@Agent_3141 Facts, I think I’m gonna unsubscribe from Yellow Flash as well. I stopped taking him seriously when he complained about Rogues butt being flat in a background scene in X-Men’97 and that was a UA-cam short.
I liked the first 3 seasons of Harley Quinn, I understand that some people don't appreciate seeing Bruce make a mess like that, but the point of the series is to make parody versions of DC characters, so I liked how they handled his trauma
In the end, almost everyone on the internet has some form of brainrot one way or another. I sometimes enjoy cringe shows, that's my brainrot, but it's hypocritical for me to look at another person and say that our gen is better because it isn't brainrotted, which is a lie
I personally don't understand what makes Skibidi Toilet different from all the other weird and honestly worser stuff I've seen back in 2015 and afterwards
I admit I'm not a fan of bringing politics and agendas into games (i.e. make it woke) but a lot of UA-cam channels I used to follow that covers entertainment news is taking it too far. I used to think that they were complaining because they cared about the product, but now I see they're just hating for the sake of hating. Take a few recent pieces of entertainment for example, like Space Marines 2 or Transformers One. Both are amazing products and don't have any forced agendas in them. You think they would celebrate this, until you realize they don't even care. They focus on the negatives and ignore the good. That's why I unsubscribed to them. I'm tired of nothing but hate and negativity. If you look at these channels almost every video is negative (and the thumbnails are cringy af). If I listened to them and stopped playing any game (like Spider-Man 2) because it has some woke elements in it then I would literally be missing out on a lot of great games. Not to mention when they do praise a product, they almost always go against it the second something bad happens, like Helldivers 2. They're all fake and at this point are just as bad as the people they claim to be against. Haters, echo chambers, and crybabies
I love how andypants or something like that made a video about space marine 2 because it had no wokeness in it instead of ignoring it and focusing on woke games
@@j.i.nthenobody54 TBF now the critical drinker has that on his recommends which means when hes complaining about wokeness it has nothing to do with arcanes. my guess is that at least him specifically he doesnt like it when its forced (a black viking in the year 900 is my guess) anyway drinker last i checked was much "calmer" than say nerdrotic or geeks and gamers
What “political agenda?“ making a character a non white cis het male? These people exist and deserve to be represented. Helldivers has a political agenda off being anti imperialist capitalism, is that also an issue?
It is still bad though(when it’s actually wokeness)because companies like sweet baby will put creative boundaries on certain games to make it 100% friendly ,or sometimes ruin characters to meet the requirement
That depends on whether the events that happen later in the plot are proactive or not in relationship to said character. In other words, if an event happened because of a choice the character made after surviving, then yes. You're right. But if it's a case of something coincidentally/conveniently happening, something that, in narrative, usually comes across as "phew, good thing this character was there cause he could do/have X thing", then it's most certainly plot armor to get to this specific outcome. Essentially, it comes down to execution and how proactive vs reactive the story is. Edit: should probably mention I'm not sure if you're arguing a specific series of speaking in general. I'm doing the latter, just so we're clear.
You pointed out a lot of things that are genuinely a problem in media discourse and outlined a lot of ways to properly criticize something in pointing out these flaws in an argument or discussion nowadays and you spoke very precisely. Great job man 🤙🤙

The recent reactions to Ghost Of Yotei kind of made me realize some things. People started looking into the main actress's tweets and started using them as an excuse to not play the game because "she's an activist.". The entire time I couldn't help think "I don't agree with some of things she says, and she probably should've kept some stuff to herself, but what does that have to do with the game she's in?". Don't get me wrong, I hate forced diversity. I think too many pieces of media are trying to hard to be diversive. Concord was a recently example where I felt they were trying to be diverse, when they should've focused more on having better designed characters and fun gameplay. However, it's not as though I'm against game being diversive. I love the Horizon games, and it's a game where I play as a female lead who's gay. The only complaint I have with her in that regard, is that I felt the relationship the writers put her in, felt unnatural and pretty forced. I also feel the same thing towards God Of War Ragnarok to a certain extent. I don't like Sweet Baby Inc. I think they're out to make gaming worse and ruin story telling for the sake of being more inclusive for the people who probably won't play the games they help work on to begin with. However, I'm not gonna immediately dismiss games GOW Ragnarok and Spider-Man 2 just because they worked on them. GOWR has a great scene with Freya that felt earned and it was towards a character who, narratively, deserved it the most. But all people like Synthetic Man could focus on was "OH A WOMAN PUTS DOWN A MAN BECAUSE MAN BAD!!!" and it was exhausting hearing him talk about it. You can not like those games for any number of reasons, but a part of me isn't going to immediately dismiss it because SBI worked on it. Unless they're consulting made the game worse by either character assassinating established characters, or whatever other reason that could've made the game bad. Ultimately, Ghost Of Yotei is a game I'm excited for. I trust Sucker Punch to make a fantastic, because they've yet to make a single bad game. From Sly Cooper to Infamous to Ghost Of Tsushima, I think they're working on something amazing, and I'm not gonna let some dumb shit the actress said on her personal social media ruin my expectations of a game I've been waiting for. Because it's not like she has a say on the actual writing and story telling of the game. The only thing she has to do is act and all I can ask of her is to act well and convincingly. Edit: Oh yeah, I almost forgot to mention that recently there was a mod for Ragnarok that got taken down from Nexus Mods, because it changed the character, Angrboda, from being a person of color to just another white person. Basically just like the mod that got rid of pride flags, but even worse because it changed an entire characters design, that was based off of a real person. That felt particularly deplorable to me, and yet people were mad about it being taken off the site rather than what the mod was doing to the game.
Agreed with everything you've said tho I just wanted to add that Sweet Baby is a consultant co. They don't literally go & force devs to be inclusive. But this does not mean I like the work they've done (they were apparently involved in SS KTJL)
The problem is she was probably hired because of those tweets like every good activists like sweet baby Inc that are racists like her so yeah that is why everything is concerned plus is another male character being subistuted by a woman look at my marvel this days and see where this normally goes towards
I agree though I amm of the view that Concord woulda still failed regardless of whether the diversity was forced or not Alot of other factors played into it failing
Based. However it is hypocritical that people are angry when rights attack a left activist who is in the industry when the left has been doing it for the rights in the industry all these years and getting away with it
My thing is why do people feel the need to represent, these companies thrive in dividing people, whether that be race, religion, sexuality. Instead of just making coherent material that isn’t plagued by politics. A lot of people are quick to judge but never look through both sides glasses. And this is the problem.
You see, I don't think the problem it's the need but you said the why, and for me the real problem of the why its that these companies don't really care for race, religion or sexuality, they just want the easy money and need some kind of light to attract the moths into the flame. If there's a game that have these kind of topics, that isn't the problem, the thing is when these topics aren't there for some kind of respect for the communities or even to really represent these people.
Westerners will consider anyone not choosing a side coward these days or just label them as the other side like they’re looking for enemies. I mean think of how easy it would be if my work is gay or so manly, a lot of people will view that. Haters and lovers

There is a difference between being neutral on the games themselves until you play them and being neutral in a discourse with actual racists, transphobes and homophobes with their opponents being people who at worst are a bit overzealous when protecting gay and black people. Saying that those two sides are in any manner equal does imply that you do not take much issue with bigotry. You can both admit the faults of both sides while acknowledging that one side is still demonstrably better than the other.

As a Metroid, Stellar Blade, Celeste, and Resident Evil fan, I have no issues with playing as women in games. You can have your preferences, obviously, but don't get mad over playing as a woman in a video game. Get mad at them being a bad character if they turn out to be so.

I genuinely feel bad for people who sincerely view media as woke or not woke. With that kind of lens you already make up your mind before even indulging in the media and you limit yourself on what you can enjoy and what you can't.
Not really. Woke media and non-woke media is really really easy to identify. Games, movies or series that have an aggressive push for diversity or worse equality/socialism are woke. I have seen woke crap multiple times and the reason they are all bad, is due to lack of substance. The key word I used was aggressive, shows like Velma are extremely woke, due to the fact that it is telling white people that they are inherently evil and being a straight male is the equivalent of being the spawn of Satan. I don't need to support the people who hate me, why should I? Why would I want to be told I am inherently problematic? This is what we mean by wokeness, it is raising minorities, not through treating them as good morally ethical characters, but by lowering the bar and destroying the integrity of their target of pure envy. Representation of characters is a good, but it must make sense and be natural or else it doesn't come off as sincere.
Not to mention that they've destroyed the term beyond recognition. Woke used to just mean striving for representation and equality. Now these people will look at any protagonist who isn't a straight white male and claim that it's "forced diversity" as if their the only type of people who exist on the planet. Side note, nice Girls Last Tour profile pic.
I understand why people call things “woke”, but it is just so insanely cringey that loads of people aren’t bothered to see why someone has called it that. Like the Acolyte on Disney+. People have called it woke but I feel like if we stopped using that corny ass word and instead just stated what was wrong with the piece of media straight away, people would listen more and understand people’s reasoning. The word woke doesn’t even mean what people think it does. Woke doesn’t mean left-leaning or liberal ideologies. Woke means to be politically and socially aware and to have a heavy involvement in politics and things of that sort.
Don't you just love it when a review starts of reasonable mentioning that the writers made some awful decisions, and then the reviewer suddenly mentions the word 'woke' which then makes you question the rest of the review? Reviews like this make it hard to determine whether someone's actually critiquing, or is just finding an excuse to be a jerk.
I do agree with most of what's said in this video. Although I do admittedly think some of the stuff mentioned, like the one from Spider-Man Far From Home, can still kind of fall under "nitpicking," mainly because I do think stuff like him taking his mask off in the car feels like a minor flaw in the movie's storytelling. There's no real solid defense for it for sure (aside from him just being frantic and not really thinking about it I suppose?), but I do think it being a commonly glossed over point in the movie that had very little attention drawn to it, is what makes it come off as somewhat "nitpicky," since whether or not it actively breaks the immersion in a story is what makes it become "subjective." Not really forming an argument here, just smth I noticed.
The whole point of the discourse is to get pre teen nerds to associate the presence of black people, women, etc. as a red flag/scapegoat for bad movies.
As a guy on the anti woke side I agree discourse and arguing is annoying, I’ve lost respect for so many people because they choose a side and became dicks about it and I’m tired of explaining why I believe this or that over and over again, I just want to have disagreements for crying out loud, and I don’t want to think of Anita sarkeesian when I’m watching an edgy comedy.
Back then games decade ago used to be fun and discussion about gameplay. Now its about Hate this and that, im tired of it. Just let people make games and its also a business so they should know who their audience is.
The main reason I don't like Batman is his personality...at least, the way it's depicted in today's media. Back in the days of Batman: TAS; the character had compassion, restraint and actually showed sympathy towards some of the villains he fought against. Twenty-some years later and more current iterations depict him as more paranoid, egotistical, distant, obsessed with his so-called "mission" and doesn't believe anyone can change for the better. Also, what you said about political brain rot is so on-point. I keep hearing and seeing people use the term "woke" so much that it comes off as white noise, at this point; especially since no one even USES the term anymore. Anybody who still DOES is (as you said) a complete moron

To be fair, criticism doesn't help creators improve our work. All it is is just people telling artists that they shouldn't make their art the way they want to and should only be allowed to make their art the way that somebody else says they should. The artist should be the one deciding whether or not their art is good because we're the ones doing all the work. Constantly telling us what to do doesn't help us, it just limits our capabilities because people want to hold us to constantly changing standards and rules that we have no say in. It's a hierarchal relationship that shouldn't exist with us artists on the bottom and the criticizers on top controlling what we can or can't do and not letting us have any creative freedom because they think they know what's best, they think they know what's good or bad and keeps us slaves to that black and white dichotomy.
I agree a bit though, I worry that "objective" reviewing is homogenizing art and is forcing artists to write in a certain way to be considered good. Like, for example, Colin says that three dimesional characters were interesting and I guess that is what he factors into writing being good. But why? Can character not be one note and still be interesting? Why do they need three dimensions when they can serve the purpose with just two or one, and possibly be more entertaining for doing so? All critisms can be lobbied at any story, but so what? I don't think anyone can really agree on what makes good pacing. How good a character is seems entirely subjective. Some critique work for not being realistic or for breaking internal logic. But why should a work have to stick to realism and when is a work not breaking its own logic but adding to the logic?
What I’m sick of with modern media discourse or criticism is the purity testing of the people involved in creating said media. Such as oh this person has different political beliefs than me or this person is outspoken about some I don’t believe in or some such nonsense so this media will obviously be agenda driven even if they aren’t the one in charge of creating said media. This goes for games books comics music tv shows or movies. It’s truly brain-rot inducing.

As much as I've disagreed with you previously, I think this is a good video. I specially agree with the whole politics in media discussion thing. I just hate it when companies change the race, sexuality, gender, or beliefs of a character only for political points. If the actor is a terrible person then I probably won't watch it since I don't want to support them, but in the media they should keep things the same unless it will make the story better. I use the word woke to refer to the companies who ruin stories with their agendas, and prioritize representation over a good product.

1. the "woke" is black slang to be aware of your surroundings and what's really going on. Woke doesn't mean women or minorities
Words gain and change meanings all the time and "Woke" is no different to where it now has both meanings associated with it

I hate how people claim to “wake up” when in reality they gloss over or parrot things because it’s what media is supposed to have you say/do.

Something i absolutely HATE about media discourse now is when people consume literally anything that takes more than 1 braincell to understand they act like they are the media literacy messiah and send death threats or harassment to anyone for having a different opinion on the story or characters
Another one is ppl saying "art is interpretive" but getting pissy at any other interpretation than their own
I remember wanting to watch the Barbie movie with some friends from college for a while, because a lot of people in my friend circle saw it in theaters and said it was really good.
I like the Barbie movie but why didn't she like it?

Barbie is like Transformers 2007
I just like the goofy ahh stuff.
THIS!!! I am so happy that you made this video. Now I wanna add a few more points of my own and wanna add on to your points:
*Creators will Ignore Vital Criticism:* We should also bring up another problem with criticism.
Speaking of which…
*Death of Creative Freedom:* Because of the whole dumb culture war and what not, whatever a creator does and whatever design choices they have can be immediately judged with no sense of remorse. Now let’s get to my final point…
*If it’s bad, Politics shouldn’t matter:* Y’all know exactly what I mean when I say this.
Is go take a shower the new go touch grass?

If I listened to them and stopped playing any game (like Spider-Man 2) because it has some woke elements in it then I would literally be missing out on a lot of great games.

Something people don't understand about plot armor is that the plot doesn't force then to survive but more of the plot happens because they survive
Great way to put it
That depends on whether the events that happen later in the plot are proactive or not in relationship to said character.

We literally just went through this in Final Fantasy 14 trust me complain now while there's still a chance to fix it.
I agree though I amm of the view that Concord woulda still failed regardless of whether the diversity was forced or not
Alot of other factors played into it failing
Ain't no one causing division except these weird whyte men
You see, I don't think the problem it's the need but you said the why, and for me the real problem of the why its that these companies don't really care for race, religion or sexuality, they just want the easy money and need some kind of light to attract the moths into the flame. If there's a game that have these kind of topics, that isn't the problem, the thing is when these topics aren't there for some kind of respect for the communities or even to really represent these people.
It’s much easier to cash in on a simple concept that attracts certain types of people than to actually make those concepts work properly.

As a Metroid, Stellar Blade, Celeste, and Resident Evil fan, I have no issues with playing as women in games.

As a guy on the anti woke side
I agree discourse and arguing is annoying, I’ve lost respect for so many people because they choose a side and became dicks about it and I’m tired of explaining why I believe this or that over and over again, I just want to have disagreements for crying out loud, and I don’t want to think of Anita sarkeesian when I’m watching an edgy comedy.

Yeah all of what you said was false
