Hey, Shadiversity did a review on his channel “Knight’s Watch” for Across The Spiderverse and… it felt quite harsh. He did bring up some good points, but I felt like he blew a few things out of proportion.
Could you maybe do a video to see if he is actually being a bit unfair? Sorry, it’s just you seem to have better insight when debunking things.

I disagree with you about the show’s political alignment. The show is pretty leftist (and that’s part of its charm imo). At its core, it is a satire of capitalism and American fascism.
What you describe as a critique of leftism in your attempt to defend the point that they pick on both sides reads more as a critique of liberalism than leftism.
Like with A-Train in his Wakanda fit. It’s a critique of the liberal mindset that all we need is a Black president/cop/ceo to “end racism” when in reality those people will serve the exact same function as their predecessor (i.e. to preserve the irreconcilable class antagonisms created under capitalism). A-Train was about as helpful to Black folks hurt by Blue Hawk as Obama was to folks in the Middle East.
But I don’t see what that has to do with leftism. That’s liberalism. Leftists denounce this kind of problem-solving as a perversion of their ideals for the sake of capitalist imperialism. They’ve done it with Obama, Hillary, Kamala, etc.
I know you don’t like politics, but it’s pretty reductive to conflate this with the left and treat it as representative of the “other side.” Those plot points you describe as a “critique of the left” involve characters who are very obviously not on the left.
They’ve had numerous opportunities to make fun of the ideals inherent to leftism, but they don’t. They usually just make fun of the corporations that exploit those ideals for profit.
This is entirely different from how they treat the right. They make fun of the right’s ideology itself, not just the people who exploit it. They explicitly make fun of the homophobia and transphobia. They don’t make fun of people for being gay or trans. They make fun of the “All Lives Matter” crowd. They don’t make fun of the people saying Black Lives Mattter. They make fun of Trump’s movement, not the people who protest in opposition.

4 seasons in and every single character except A train is telling the same story. Frenchie and Kimiko are the exact same S4 as they were in S2. Huey is regressing, not progressing, as a character and as a person. His sexual abuse and trickery used against him is played as laughs, or as tacit permission for Starlight to abuse him further. I've legitimately forgotten why MM is still hmm-hawing over getting his family back, or sticking with the plan to kill Homelander. Starlight's character arc has been 'I become more tired and more gaunt every season and deliver my lines in hoarse whispers' for 3 seasons, confronting her past time and time again, and only solving it through wanton violence. How'd she even get into the most secure bunker on the planet to save the President-Elect, anyways?
This isn't a defense of The Drinker, by the way- he's a hack fraud who doesn't even watch the shows he comments on- but no one in The Boys except A Train is getting an actual character progression.

@@LamiaLoverseason 1 and 2 (up to the finale) were both pretty fair at shitting on both sides of the aisle, season 2 finale is when they decided to stop satirizing the left as much or at least not to the same degree, season 3 the writers lost the plot, season 4 is just shock value as they waste time building up to the season 5 finale. Its edgelord powerfantasy at its core, so youre really not missing much if you dont watch it.

To be fair none of the defenders of the shift in tone are either. Either they cannot see there's been a huge shift from attacking an ideology to just copying headlines over the four seasons and they have the same responses to the point if I found out there's a bunch of GPT bots running around defending the show, I would not be shocked. "It was always political." "Just figure out who it is making fun of?" "Learn media literacy." It's like copy+paste defense with zero nuance actually discussing how the show has changed or even acknowledging it. I don't like being preached to even when I agree with a message, and it's become quite preachy.

One thing I disagree with you on, the “Training A-train” movie that they show isn’t mocking the left, they’re mocking white savior narratives like The Blind Side, movies that are about minority athletes, actors, celebrities who “made it out of the ghetto” because of a of a white mentor figure. portraying their neighborhoods as nothing but crime infested cesspools like Gotham City, reinforcing negative stereotypes of these communities. Like how they portray A-train’s brother as some drug dealer when in reality, he was A-Train’s coach, not the wealthy white guy who Will Ferrell plays.

As a leftist myself, the show doesn’t make fun of leftism so much as it satires corporations co opting leftist language and ideals but all to sale their product or brand at the end of the day. This isn’t me trying to cope with sour grapes either. The Hunt which had liberal coded rich antagonists literally hunting conservative influencers copped out by having the protagonist just be neutral instead of a Trump supporter. It would’ve been better to have her as a Trump supporter because that way it can actually challenge your perceptions instead of just being able to root for someone trying to live.

Its easy to hate on stuff like the acolyte, ahsoka and the new dr who, because they dont just throw alot of politics around but simply because theyre horrible and nonsensical. I think both sides have a point here. While media has always been political to varying degrees and sometimes it is the joke, I’d also be lying if I said the show hasn’t gotten less and less subtle about which side of the isle they’re endorsing. There does come a point where the politics go from a natural part of the story to being the script writer wanking his side. Not to mention the show does feel a lot more disjointed and uninteresting with some of its side plots, particularly Frenchie.
Overall, I would say (at least so far) season 4 is the weakest season but it’s pointing at woke is more a symptom of the problem rather than looking at the problem as a whole.
Guess he didn’t notice the man whose cape is modeled after the American flag in the previous 3 seasons. He must’ve thought the people who made the show only put it there for cosmetic reasons

I use to follow the drinker because he use to make valid reviews to things that were objectively bad....now he just rages and moans and things he thinks he understands and doesn't actually make a point. It's just yea. i didn't like this, and it was because of pandering, and that's why it's bad....like give me examples. you can tear acolyte apart and make sense, but when a show is actually good, there is no actual reason.
I used to watch some of his vids even though I thought they weren’t good reviews, because I found them funny. But he eventually got old after a while saying the same stuff over and over again.

I was getting depressed with the first 2 episodes. It's hard to find anything that isn't pushing politics these days. I can deal with it a little if it pays off. I just hope this one doesn't end up being like so many other shows that went too far one way or the other.

It's really not that. The show used to attack the same concepts in a clever broad strokes way that would be timeless; someone watching a decade from now would understand.
Somewhere along the way it became "repeat headline, add supe, repeat." The fact none of the defenders of this season can see that is sad, in particular since they are the ones who want to scream about media literacy.
@@BlazingOwnager Yeah, I haven't seen a single cogent defense of the show's decline. It feels like each new season is just a little bit worse than the one before it, so you don't notice it. But if you go back and watch Season 1 after finishing Season 4 it's like...damn. The music is on point. The satire is on point. Everything is punchier and grittier and Homelander actually feels like a threat. It's so good.

He claims that the problem with season 4 is that it is more blatant about its political leaning, when he HIMSELF said the show was never subtle or nunaced about that to begin with. Imagine contradicting yourself this hard. Besides the point that he never watched the new season for himself so he has no way of actually telling if the claim of his is even valid to begin with.
He also makes very vague ass comments about how the show now only panders to the woke mob etc. when again the show HAS ALWAYS DONE THIS. In the first season it had a whole episode of making fun off extremist christianty and defending gay marriage. You cant get more "woke" than that. There is nothing about the sub-plots of season 4 that wasnt like the sub-plots of previous seasons. I swear, the Critical Drinker is a hack who couldn’t properly criticize season 4 for anything even if he tried. If he wanted to seriously criticize season 4 for something, then he should have watched it and pointed out how dumb it is that Homelander decided to try and blindly shoot his lasers at the long stretch of vent Hughie was crawling through, instead of just flying up to the long section of vent, like he did with the previous section of vent Hughie was crawling through, or how he did in the following scene when he flew up to catwalk, and lasering Hughie’s ass. He obviously knows Hughie is in that part of vent, because he’s shooting at him, so why not just fly up and laser him? Then, Hughie made it to a catwalk, so Homelander decided to fly up to the catwalk, and slowly walk towards the Hughie, instead of just blitzing towards it with Diabolical speed. Hughie should have been dead, like how The Boys team should have been dead in season 2’s sewer scene.

Yes, he did accidentally laser the plane controls, despite it being established that he can precisely control his lasers enough, as to not blast right through someone in the previous scene, but that is just the writers being dumb. He has made pretty smart moves, like how he pivoted after he decided not to save the flight 37 passengers, because of reason unknown. Or how he gave the military a good reason to let Supes into the military, by creating supervillains. Despite what Stan Edgar said. And let’s be honest, if Stan wanted to sell Compound-V, and not superheros, since they are a pharmaceutical company, then he would have always needed to tell the military about compound-V. There is also the inconsistency with Homelander blasting through the super villain and hitting a civilian, despite it being established that he can control his laser vision, as to not cause collateral. Besides, Homelander “being dumb,” as the justification for him not killing Hughie, falls apart when you realize he is more than fine with doing everything that would allow him to kill Hughie in the same scene. He’s fine with flying through the vents, but all of a sudden isn’t, he’s fine with flying up onto the catwalk, but wasn’t fine with using his flight to kill Hughie while he was in the vents in the previous scene, the writers can’t keep anything consistent, and blatantly contradict themselves ever second. Honestly, the only valid justification that you could potentially use to defend this shit, is that Homelander is just having fun, and truly doesn’t care. He secretly didn’t care about Maeve releasing the flight 37 footage in season 2’s finale, and just went along with it because it made his game a bit more interesting. He intentionally lasered through the super villain, to cause as much drama for his game as possible, because it doesn’t matter if he burns the world down. That’s really the only logical explanation for his inconsistent behavior.

It's stuff like this that's why I stay away from the culture war, but with a take that's so legitimately questionable as this one, I'll step back into the mud for a few minutes and make a comment anyway. Why is this man trying to critique and criticize a piece of art he hasn't seen? It'd be like me trying to give my take on 'Game of Thrones', a show I haven't seen, or trying to have an opinion on a carnival ride you haven't been on, you can only gather so much from external sources before you have to accept that you haven't been on the ride yourself. You can choose not to consume something because you don't think it looks good, that's fine, but then trying to critique and criticize it anyway is trying to have the best of both worlds and simultaneously making a fool of yourself in both.
Also, another note, not seeing this season and critiquing/criticizing it is already questionable enough, but basing the reception of the season off of a 'Rotten Tomatoes' audience score? Why? Online reviewing on those kinds of sites is always kinda shaky just because it's more indicative of the opinions of those who have left a review as opposed to being indicative of the opinions of those who have watched the season. It's like with the 'Elden Ring' dlc being review bombed right now, the people leaving negative reviews are not indicative of the whole of the people who have played the dlc (there are legitimate criticisms towards both 'The Boys' and 'Elden Ring', but even still it's not indicative of the whole public's reception of those projects). In addition to that, 'Rotten Tomatoes' already has a questionable reputation, combined with the fact that user scores are just as likely to be as biased or more biased than the "fvck!ng shills" that Mr. Jordan's talking about, so he's already placing a faulty double standard more strictly on the media critics and more leniant on the audience (I'm not saying the media critics are more correct in their assertions than anyone else, I'm just saying that both takes should be given a grain of salt, since we're all biased in some way or another, be that politically, financially, socially, philosophically, or otherwise).
Also why is it that "if you don't think you'll like it, don't watch it" is such a hot take? If something looks like it's getting progressively worse or looks inherrently bad from the getgo, you are entirely allowed to walk away from it and use your time on something you think to be more worthwhile. You could make the argument that it's on the creators and producers to ensure that their products stays consistently good, and that is true that if a project is bad or gets worse then people will stop watching and/or be let down by the product they're consuming (again various outcomes happening to both 'Game of Thrones' and certain 'Arrowverse' shows in that way). But the problem with this argument is that even if the products are good in quality (subjective, I know) and largely well received (rotten tomatoes is not the place to go to determine that) and still don't seem like something you would enjoy, then that is not on them to force you to engage with the art (contrary to what Mr. Jordan's been saying), it's on you to decide whether or not you choose to keep engaging with said art.
Also, regarding his comments on "good storytelling," who gets to decide what that definitively does and does not constitute? There are objective elements within storytelling, such as a story's genre, who the main characters are, where the story takes place, etc. But this becomes an issue when the topic becomes "A happened because B" and one person says "I think this is good" and another says "I think this is bad". We all scale various elements of art in a different way, and as such we take the objective parts of the events within a story and place them under a subjective lens, and this can easily affect what is considered to be good storytelling (even something seemingly universal such as show don't tell), even more so when you haven't seen the art for yourself and are placing that lens over nothing (like is the case here). An argument could be made that Mr. Jordan's takes have more credibility to them because he's written stories of his own through his 'Ryan Drake' series, as well as his upcoming movie which has the trailer on his channel. The problem with this claim is that even in the instance that all of his projects are top tier works, like 'Saving Private Ryan' levels of quality, that doesn't change the fact that Mr. Jordan still holds these personal biases, and is just as susceptible to them as the rest of us are to our own. This is worsened when you aren't aware you hold them, and this can lead to a false idea of an 'objective' lens without considering the fact that you are still looking at something in a biased way.
In addition to this, not all of the feedback to his stories have been good, with a large number of the comments on Will's trailer turning against him like dogs, the fact that a large number of reviews for his books say they found him through his channel (not saying that's bad, just that it's questionable that a lot of them preface that before saying they liked the books), and that fact that multiple people have said that this story is one of the most boring things they've ever read, and that it looks like every spy thriller ever put into a blender and then put out into the world. I'm gonna get Ad-Hominemal once and only once, but I don't trust the judgement of "good storytelling" from a man whose book includes, and I'm not kidding here, an entire page's worth describing the history of the AK-47 as well as what it is (that isn't hyperbole and I wish it was, if you have the book 'Redemption', it's on page 389).
I've said in other comment sections that Will Jordan has one or two legitimate grains of truth (such as the corporate/business/financial side of art overreaching into the creative side of the art), but honestly, whenever I see clips and videos like these, it makes me question whether steelmanning in this way is worth it with arguments like this. I'm still gonna try steelmanning where I can with stuff like this, just because I never want to be seen as some braindead strawmanning/ad-homineming twitter bot who's only parroting arguments like chatgpt, but even with the steelmanning taking down arguments like this is easier than drawing a triangle.
I've said it multiple times before and I'll say it again multiple times hereafter if I choose to, I think the culture war is the biggest waste of time a person could engage in, especially since so much of it lives online and focuses more about complaining that things suck as opposed to doing anything to actively change what currently sucks (assuming the things they're talking about are things that legitimately suck). My advice to anyone who may read this, step away from the outrage, ignore the adult-children (red or blue) and just try to be better than this, because all you get from this conflict is nothing but brain rot, as showcased here. I would like to say something about Frenchie's relationship.
When I saw it, I wasn't annoyed that he was bisexual, since as you said it was foreshadowed. However, my issue lies with how they introduced a new relationship with a character most real won't care about instead of building it up first. For example, they met in one of those support groups, right?
That's good, however, since when does Frenchie want to get off drugs? Why didn't we get to see his journey of beating while also developing a relationship with the new dude?
Another problem with Frenchie is that they keep treading old grounds.
Season two was about his past coming to haunt him when we finally learn how he kinda got Mallory's gran kids killed.
That was good.
Then season three does this again by showing his boss call him out for his murders and how he's a killer.
Then season 4 again shows his past coming back to haunt him.
They keep giving him a singular arc and refuse to let him grow.
Season 4's ending might hint that he's fine now, only for it to repeat the last seaons.

My main problem with his relationship this season is that it's clearly just lazy writing to give him something to do. If they didn't have this plotline, he'd just be working on yet another way to kill supes that either a) works but is only used to kill off a minor character or b) doesn't work at all.
Also, it's not even that serious. He even says that it just sorta happened. Yet the audience is supposed to care about their relationship? It's barely anything more than a friend with benefits. There's 0 development shown between them. There's no romantic build-up. It just sorta gets announced.
Then, it's revealed what he did in the past, which is supposed to be this huge dilemma. Oh, he loves him, but he hurt him. What is he going to do?
1) It's not that serious to begin with, so just leave, dude. Lie about the reason if you really have to. Crisis averted.
2) It makes no sense for him to even pursue this relationship in the first place, knowing what he did. THAT's the part that's inconsistent with his character. NOT his sexuality. Frenchie is usually one of the more logical, level-headed characters of the group. A risk taker, maybe. An idiot, no.
3) This whole arc is boring and redundant since previous seasons already dive into his past anyway. Total waste of time.
Side note: This is more of a personal issue, but this show had a chance to have some good bisexual representation, but they totally blew it. Disappointed.

It's hard to argue that season 4 is GOOD. It's not. The writing is lazy, ham-fisted and preachy. The entire point of the comic source is that supes are not as amazing as people are lead to believe and They Boys bring justice to their bad behavior. Season 4 is, "We don't like anyone who is not us. Here, have some hyperbole." Kripke and the writers have completely abandoned the source material for their own self interest.
To not realize that the show had a dip in quality from season 2, 3 and 4 is crazy, I love the show, but it would be braindead to not acknowledge it, things are not as impactful as season 1, the stakes felt higher and almost everything felt that matter, season 3 was mostly pointless

The problem people have when it comes to season 4 of The Boys is that the writers clearly don’t understand right-wing talking points, and have to resort to the straw man fallacy to portray them. So instead of representing conservative talking points, they are in reality showcasing extremist talking points, which they portray as the majority of right-wingers. For example, the character Firecracker is perfectly representative of this straw man, with her shouting conspiratorial buzz words, being a grifter, inspiring extremist behavior, and having an army of effectively mindless followers agreeing with her on everything. If the writers genuinely did know about mainstream right-wing talking points, they would realize that real life sort of parallels to her, such as Richard Spencer, Nick Fuentes, and Sneako, are viewed as laughing stocks in their spheres. Not to mention, all of these people aren’t nearly as cartoonish as she is. Now this would be fine, as long as they portray the left in the same way, but they don’t. They are far more nuanced when it comes to representing the left, such as differentiating between goofy woke talking points and actual left-wing talking points, the latter of which they portray in a much more positive light. Almost like the writers know a lot more about left-wing talking points. It’s like holding a Nerf gun to the left, and an MG42 to the right. With that in mind, it’s less like political satire, and more like biased propaganda. I’d make the argument that The Boys season 4 is a lot closer to a show like Mr. Birchum, which was ridiculed for the same exact reason. Contrast this with a show like South Park, where Matt and Trey will often take their time researching topics in order to portray both sides of the issue, while mocking the extremes. That’s all people want, just some honesty with satire.
Their portrayal of the left is almost comedic from of how detached from realty it is. You see Homelander supporters who are clear caricatures of real life Trump supporters, and then you have Starlight supporters, who are just...people wearing yellow shirts. I refuse to believe the writers are completely unaware of the existence of Antifa or what happened during 2020 and how it lead to $2 billion worth of property damage as well as innocent people being caught in mob violence, they have to be intentionally denying the reality of how leftists look like in real life just so they can jerk off their egos and make themselves feel like they're on the right side of history.

I do think the satire is less coherent and less effective now since there is no longer a distinction betweem Vought and the Seven/Homelander. Homelander represents reactionary conservatism/fascism, and Vought is used to satirise faux woke corportism, but Homelander now runs Vought... yet still Vought is celebrating pride month and inclusivity & diversity? This doesn't make a lot of sense. Seems like the writers just dumped everything they dislike onto the Seven/Vought to make a point and make some jokes, but this doesn't work with where the narrative has gone. It worked when Homelander was separate from Vought, but not now he runs the company. The Seven is now poltiically incoherent, making diversity hires whilst run by a fascist.
Also episodes 2,3 & 5 have been pretty boring. I think I've grown tired of the characters, tbh. There's nowhere else for them to go, nothing new for us to learn. Butcher isn't as novel or unique. It's the same facial expressions, the same cadence, etc. Sometimes shows just run out of ideas. When Homelander isn't on screen doing evil shit, it feels pretty dry.

I do agree that season 3/4 of The Boys has kinda fallen off. I don’t mean in terms of politics or anything; frankly I don’t give a shit as long as the product itself is good. I just think that the characters have become more predictable and that all of the “your past can come back to haunt you” rhetoric in season 4 felt a little shoehorned in and disingenuous. Especially since all of the flashbacks have never been actually shown until it becomes relevant. Except for Frenchie; like him doing terrible things in his past was always mentioned at any given moment, same with Butcher. But all the stuff with Annie and Kimiko felt a little dry and hollow. And at the end of season 4 when Hughie was giving the “don’t give up speech” it really felt like a scene from a CW show. The Boys has never been super subtle with its themes, which works, but it never felt like the topics that were explored ever lacked depth or weren’t interesting. In the two newest seasons though it definitely felt like they cared a lot less about genuine writing. Every scene where all the Boys were on-screen could be boiled down to “Butcher is being an asshole, Annie says something mean, Hughie tries to calm her down, everyone starts arguing, MM jumps in and says something in a tough-love tone and magically settles the argument, Kimiko and Frenchie do something funny.” I think season 4’s biggest strengths are when each character is having their own moment to shine and explore their own arc thoroughly without the pacing fucking everything up with an unnecessary joke or a funny comment. And I think they really dropped the ball with Ryan’s character. He felt the most butchered out of everybody, no pun intended. They went back and forth with him wanting to be good vs. evil so much that I lost interest so quickly. I do agree with some of what Drinker says in terms of writing and quality, but again, I don’t care about the politics. And I do think this review was pretty poor on his end; considering he made a lot of claims without evidence and didn’t even watch the show. After watching the whole season for myself though I can confidently say I’m not very excited for season 5. I did enjoy watching your review though! Idk if you wrote a script for this video or not, but if so it was very well written and I appreciate you backing up your claims and still giving fair criticism

I'll copy my comment from another video debunking the Drinker video, "The entire point of the show is to use a symbol of hyper-capitalism (superheroes in the modern age) to show us the escalation and eventual downfall of hyper-capitalism and consumerism. Its a warning for us nowadays that is saying 'hey, this is one step further than we are right now, do you want it to get this bad?' I'd argue that reaching this point was inevitable, and that the show is saying the exact same things as before, but with the natural escalation that both narrative fiction AND real life have, it is more overt as the characters in that world become more comfortable being overt with it.

So, here the downfall of the Critical Drinker begins, his pandering to the crowd (and lacking interest, otherwise he would have at least watched 1 episode, just to make the video) becoming not just obvious, but transparent.
I am actually waiting for an apology video, given even in his comment section there are people who are not satisfied.
Season 4 deffo is the weakest of the Boys. Its not a bad season. It just felt like a setup season kinda like BNHA s5 where the show has little momentum. Also I am little disappointed with how they killed off Neuman. Also Frenchie being gay was just pointless, just like the existence of NFTs
I genuinely think the Drinker is pretty horrendous and basic in terms of actually criticizing a show. But also agree with the comments that the show, while not completely always in tatters, has been really flawed from the get go. I liked both season 1, 2 and 3 upon initial viewing but when actually rewatching them you can see some really dumb shit. Especially Season 2 where you have things like Annie randomly killing a guy and it never being brought up, while Butcher just fucking smiles at it. Or Noir & Edgar starting an alternate universe where, weirdly enough Butcher and co lived despite it being a canon event that it worked. Because a random picture of some blonde kid being labelled as "Homelander's son" is not really going to cut it as ball gripping blackmail. And not to forget Maeve receiving a jetpack/teleportation for the final fight.
But needless to say, the show has had alot of flaws in terms of it's actual events writing-wise. And it's kind of awkward how Drinker can't really pull on any of that besides some generalization.
The first two episodes of season 4 sucked badly imo, but it has got much better. I also think that to say the show has had “good writing” the entire time is absolutely not true and you’re tripping to even suggest that. There are many plot points that get abandoned or ways things were handled poorly, it is a good show, but sometimes the writers really fuck things up royally.
