  • My 2013 3.5L EcoBoost made a grinding noise when I let off the gas, which I thought was the transmission or transfer case. Turns out it was a simple and cheap repair - valves linked below

    FIXED!! One note: I pulled both the Solenoid Valve and the Check Valve. I tested the check valve simply by blowing into it myself and it seemed to work just fine. So I just replaced the solenoid valve and - whalla - problem gone! Thank you!!!

    Same thing on my 2013 Ford F-150 . It sounded like a sticky brake caliber or rust ring on the rotor catching the brake pad even rubber on rubber noise . Changed rotors and brakes last fall , no change in sound. Noticed it more in the cold weather. It went away when I switched the truck to 4x4 so I knew it wasn't brakes . Watched the video took a chance and changed the solenoid with new Ford part and it finally went away . Didn't have to replace the wheel hubs . Great video very happy

    I thought it was somewith with rotors as well untill one morning i reved engine slightly and heard it when rps were returning to idle, it only made that noise one time by doing this usually i hear it as im taking off so i was lucky i thought to do that the one time, i immediately knew then it was not calipers etc :D thanks for great video

    My water pump made the same noise and only when the truck was moving at first. I replaced the water pump and found that the old water pump could barely rotate. I first thought it was either this or the front hub bearing, but when it made the noise when the car was in park, it helped ruled out some things.

    I pulled my solenoid off and blew it out with low pressure and some moisture came out . I tested the check valve by blowing in it and it seemed to have a small amount of leakage . I just ordered those parts . BUT ... I did also have a bad wheel bearing and when I replaced it , I cleaned the gunk from the inside of the locking hub mechanism and greased it up a bit before installing the new bearing assembly . It seems to be working ok now , but I don’t trust the solenoid / check valve . $30 on Amazon it’s worth making sure . 2010 f150 4.6

    The video is very helpful for easy start troubleshooting. The vacuum line split into two lines going to IWE hub after the check valve. Hence both side will hear the noise if either check valve or solenoid valve is broken. This may not help you if you hear the grinding noise on one side only either driver or passenger. If this is happen, you will need to replace your IWE and check the line on broken side for air leak.

    Came across this video hoping to diagnose some noise on my 2012 Ford F150 EcoBoost SuperCrew Lariat 2WD. At first, I thought it was wind noise or tire noise but I have ruled that out even though the noise is similar to both. It happens at low speeds up to around 35mph and then seems to go away. It does not sound like grinding to me. I would describe it as a humming or droning noise. Will replacing the two parts in this video solve my problem? My truck is not 4WD. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

    • @MrMusic-ob2jj
      @MrMusic-ob2jj 6 років тому +2

      Chris Looysen I think for '09 the valve was on the passenger side. They moved it to the driver's side on 2012 and up. But it is a shitty design from ford! I don't think it was a good idea! It sounds like half engaged gears trying to rip each other. Drive with your window down for a little while until you figure which end is making the noise. The rotate that exact tire where the noise come from while you have your eyes on the axle, car jacked, and the drive selector in the 2hi mode. If the axle rotate with the tire in 2hi mode then this tells you that there is a slight vacuum loss which releases the iwe letting it try to engage but doesn't happen completely.. and there you go.. trrrrrrrrrrrrrr noise when you start driving but not when you are standing completely still. And there is a video from fordtechmakuloco shows the exact same noise. You can find on his channel. Just search fordtechmakuloco.

      For any others, try using a pick to wedge the clip open while pulling. Picks are pretty thin and might reduce the chance of snapping the lock mechanism. In addition, add a little heat (not a lot or you'll melt it, but a heat gun on low in the winter can save a lot of broken plastic parts) as plastic gets brittle in the cold. I've had good luck with this on vehicles from 1989-2015 year models which I'm taking apart, anywhere from 2-25 years after their date of manufacture. Just be cautious with the heat, try it and if you feel too much resistance, heat a little more.

    • @atlucas1
      @atlucas1 4 роки тому +2

      @@mikeyb4642 Nope, the clip says "PUSH" right on the tab you're pulling on. Below that tab, the clip is 2 separate pieces that divide outward when you push that PUSH bar down, so you can pull them around the latch.

    I live in Brazil. My 2011 Ford F150 FX4 has a grinding noise that happens intermittently on front wheels at both sides. The mechanic already changed the solenoid and the check valve (white and blue colour valve). He also changed the driver's side IWE actuator that had a bad diaphragm. He connected the vacuum meter to the vaccum lines and checked the vacuum pressure while driving the truck and got 400 mmHg (15.74 inHg = 7.34 psi). The vacuum generated by the engine was above 500 mmhg. Therefore, we concluded there in no vacuum leak. However, the grinding noise still happens intermittently. On the road, it happens more frequently specially when accelerating. Would you please help me solve this problem. Thanks. Jamil.

    One procedure I would recommend is testing each of the components with a vacuum gauge before replacing any parts, which may not be defective. If the check valve and the solenoid hold vacuum, then your problem is either a defective vacuum hose in between system components or the IWE actuators themselves are worn at the wheels. For those parts, you can also check them with the same vacuum gauge.

    Just bought a used 2013 F-150 and I started to hear a similar sound right after I drove it off the lot. Not sure I would call it a grinding sound though. It sounds more like a solenoid being activated causing a whirling or buzzing sound. To it reminded me of the sound of my electric fuel on my Boss 302 when I first turned the key and the it primed itself. Anyways, took it back to the dealership, a Chevrolet dealership, and after going over it for a couple hours they said they had never heard a sound like that before and couldn't find a source. So, they sent it to the Ford dealership in town and after their cursory examination they too said they had not heard that sound before. Any thoughts?

According to the dealer the vacuum tubing is way more likely to get brittle and crack than the hubs lose seal. I'll be replacing the lines and valve in the morning. Good day.
    I have a mitsubishi grandis 2004 manual 2wd benzine. Having a problem with the car.
    Whenever i went on a highway and as soon as it reaches 100km. I starts to hear a deep dull grrrr grrrrr grrrr kind of noice coming from the front of the car. Its kind of grinding. If i push throttle to go beyond 100km it disappears until i keep pushing it further but when ever i hold it steady at 100km or above it starts to do that.
    At speeds lower than 100km i do not here it.. grinding or that grrrrr grrrrr sound comes only when steady.. disengaging gear makes it disapear.. Today i went to 120km and at once pushed the clutch padel and kept it pushed. Grinding dispeared. I ride mostly at 100km and its too much irritating having this grrrrrrrrrrrrgrrrrrr noice. Its loud but deep and dull. I can here it if i am at driving or passenger seat. The car do have 1 front brake rotter which is a bit crooked. Could it be that? Today was at a local workshop. The man said cv axles needs to replace but its a hit and trial.. Can anyone advise what could it be.??
    Thanks

  • @psp777

    Ah...replaced both parts but no change unfortunately. Still sounds like wheels are rubbing against the mud flaps at times. Very frustrating. You mentioned 2 other potential causes: 1. the vacuum lines may be torn (causing a vacuum leak), or 2. the IWE's themselves are bad.
    Update: Strange, but after I replaced the parts there was no change. Progressively over a period of a week the sound is gone. I made an appointment with the Ford service here after I replaced the parts last week Yesterday I drove with a mechanic and I couldn't replicate the sound. He said there wouldn't have been an air seal leak in the valve if it released air (like in the video and with mine). Anyways, I had the sound for months. I Updated the two parts and after a week the sound is gone. Now i just need to figure out how to replace the plugs on my 2013 3.5L ecoboost. It idles rough. Any suggestions of a brand?
