My custom guitar : part 2, the sound test

  • Here it is at last !!
    for those who have been nagging about it,
    but also for those who asked nicely,
    the sound demo of the guitar I made in december 2019.
    I tried to capture the full range of what the guitar can give, using the minimum gear,
    I'm one of those who think that a lot of the tone comes from the player's fingers, so sorry for my very average playing :p
    But I remain pretty confident that this guitar would sound amazing in the hands of a virtuoso.
    Gear in this video:
    * amp: Orange CR60C (solid state), clean channel only, flat EQ, no reverb
    * mics: Shure SM 57 (center), AKG D112 (edge)
    * logic : no EQ, no compression
    * pedalboard:
    - tc electronics HyperGravity compression
    - Bluesky reverb
    - ibanez TubeScreamer (mini)
    - tc electronics MojoMojo overdrive
    Thank you so much for watching the build
    the video has 300k views as I'm writing this and so many nice and constructive comments!
    Stay tuned, more builds are coming !

    I particularly appreciate that you actually let us hear what the guitar sounds like "dry" because so many people on youtube expect us to just guess what a guitar played with distortion or an absurd amount of reverb might sound like by itself. The Dimarzio PAF in the neck was very impressive, by the way.

      Totally agree. Too many demos are swamped with overdrive from the outset - even a plank with crappy pups can sound reasonable when you push everything beyond extremes.

    Love watching you build guitars. I wouldn't worry about that switch I did mine like that as well. I took the switch plate of a Les Paul, the one that says treble and rhythm and was asked about why I had. My reply was was I kinda know what it does and I wanted to see more wood. Some people get it others tend to think I'm nuts. My guitar so it goes the way I want. RATM are cool! Congrats on another build and a really good one!

      @@tchiksguitars It's world class and I wish you the best with your company. BTW, I have a question. Are Duncans or DiMarzios more popular in Europe? I'm just asking because I live in the states, in Los Angeles, and I've been playing guitar for thirty five years and in this time I've noticed an overwhelming tendency of smaller music shops and custom builders to push Duncans very aggressively. I even had a custom guitar built from scratch in'89 and they almost refused to install DiMarzios over Duncans, and I already owned the DiMarzios! I've always prefered them to Duncans. They're much more alive and to my ears, generally warmer too.

    • @tchiksguitars
      @tchiksguitars  3 роки тому

      I have no idea what is popular here. When I was a 15 I bought an Ibanez RG in a the states (think it was in Guitar Center in California). Brought it back to Belgium. A year later the original bridge pickup died (can't remember what brand it was though, probably a proprietary Ibanez pickup? ) so I brought it to my local guitar shop in Brussels and the guy offered me to change the entire pickup for a Dimarzzio evolution, I loved it and that's the reason why I took that very same pickup and put it in this guitar 17 years later :p so you see I haven't really thought about it. Now with my different builds I'm still trying to explore different tones and different pickups. By the way I don't go in guitar shops in Belgium anymore, and that for many years now, Belgian guitar guys are notable jerks and their stocks are ridiculous :) so I only shop online.

    Very well built and played Sir. The comments seem to be unduly critical. I can't say it's entirely to my taste but why should it be? I hope you love it as much as you hoped you would! I do have to ask though. Pickup selector is "upside down" by convention. I've wired a few guitars and have often got toggle switches the wrong way round. So, mistake or deliberate?

    • @tchiksguitars
      @tchiksguitars  4 роки тому +1

      hey thank you, it is almost exactly as I wanted it to be and it makes me very proud :) about the pickup selector, it's not a mistake, or rather, I intentionally rotated the flip direction 90° clockwise because of a mistake : one wire was too short (hot wire between toggle switch and tone pot), and since I didn't want to unsolder two solder joints just to be "conventional" I kept it as is. Now in practice, it doesn't feel unnatural, or maybe I got used to it, because I play it a lot (it's my main guitar now).

      Your guitar is awesome! By the way, how do you know a right point to set pickups? I have a guitar with 3 pickups. It has 2 single pickups and bridge humbucker. This guitar has stratocaster style pickups attached to a pickguard. I wish to replace a pickguard with a new laser cut copy to replace neck single pickup with humbucker. But I do not know how to find exact position for the new humbucker. I know that polepieces can affect strings by magnetic field and create undesired harmonics. Is there some equation of something to find this out?

    • @tchiksguitars
      @tchiksguitars  4 роки тому

      Thank you ! I have no idea ! For this build I reproduced the measurement from my Ibanez prestige sz2020 which is a double humbucker. So what I would do in your case is to find a guitar that has the same configuration, reproduce the layout and then have your pickguard laser cut.

    • @tchiksguitars
      @tchiksguitars  4 роки тому

      I wouldn't use a laser engraver though, but a router with a flush trim bit and an mdf template. You will have to route some new cavity for the pickup itself in the body anyway. You can find humbucker templates for sale on the internet (stewmac delivers in Europe now). Personally I used to make my own template on mdf now I 3d print them on my tiny 3d printer. Does the job perfectly !
