    The more I work through your channel Kevin the more I learn from each video. Even for a newb like me, if you want to put the attention in then these longer tech talks are rewarding and very worthwhile. I hope you keep them coming even if it means reiterating a lot of material several years down the line, to update us on any new developments and ideas or simply to keep bringing in more subs. 👍

    Thanks Kevin! I'm a new subscriber and a very grateful student of this incredibly detailed insight to actual engine tuning.
    I've got a stock 2011 Heritage Softail 103 ci.(European version) and nearly bought an expensive TM with "autotune". Thanks to this vid, I'll be going with a "flash" tuning system.

    Excellent tutorial for me as a newbie who just purchased my first tuner. To keep the HD warranty intact, I went with the SEPST. Though I understand the EPA imposed limitations on my ability to change tables, as a retired engineer, I’m digging the ability to tune and refine the operation variables directly into the engines “brain” rather than relying on the canned starting base maps and the as-built tolerance factors 👍. Piggy-backing has its place, but I like the direct approach.

    Kevin your knowledge on the intricate adjustments to get the best performance with longevity out of the motor is mind-blowing. But not to the degree of being overwhelmed with information because of the breakdown explanation you provide along with every scenario. THANK YOU so much for what you do and keeping it simple for us not educated enough in the finer workings of how our motors work more efficient. My question is about the TTS tuner my 15 limited has installed. Since its installation 7 or 8 yrs ago ive done different things to the motor. Such as adj. pushrods, Hyd. Lifters,by pass oil breather from air box to catch can. Is there a reason to take bike back to mechanic for another/different map on the TTS Tuner to make it more fine tuned? I don't know if it would improve the efficiency of the tuner or not and figured I'd ask. THANK YOU for Your time Sir, APPRECIATED!!!

    Hey Kevin. I stumbled across your your Tube Videos. Very informative so I'm a subscriber now. I had no idea about the different kinds of mapping .The only thing I knew was open and closed loop. I have a T-Max ECM on my 2019 Ultra Limited with the 131" Kit and different Cam and Exhaust. Unfortunately T-Max only had a Map for a 117" engine which they told me to use. I had detonation and starting problems with it. Seeing as I live in Daytona I went by their Display during Bike Week. When I asked about Automatic Detonation Timing retardation, they said that it is not programmed in their ECM's. Seeing as the 131" engines are so new, this was the first one they ran across. They did some re-mapping to my Unit several times and it seems to be much better. Now from your informative Videos I find out that Daytona TwinTec produces an ECM that is Speed Density. I don't want to Dyno Tune every time I change Cams so that's why I prefer the ECM's. You seem to bend towards the Daytona TwinTec ECM. Plus they are right in my area should I have any problems. I don't know if I should pull this Unit out and sell it and buy a Daytona TwinTec ECM.

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  4 роки тому

      They don't have an ECM for M8 just yet...not sure when they will. ign timing is critical....so keep working at it.

    Thank you for the great tutorial. I am looking to purchase a Vance & Hines Fuelpak FP3 for my 2011 Dyna Wide Glide. From what I have seen it should be a great addition to my bike. The alternative is a Screaming Eagle flash tuner which should work well too but requires a laptop etc. I am not the original owner of my bike, so I do not know if anything internally has been done, but a Stage 1 upgrade is in place with Python straight pipes, and a high air flow intake. I like the idea of flash programming. I program microcontrollers and write custom firmware as part of my job. I'd love to mess with custom maps for my bike :)

      @KevinBaxter  4 роки тому

      You're welcome. I would highly recommend a PV3 or Power Vision instead. Will allow for quite a bit more custom tuning, especially if you decide to do more Performance work later. If you decide to go that route, give us a call. I can set up a custom map in it for you before I ship it out.

    Awesome topic Kevin! I'm glad you touched on the ECM replacements. I've looked at the differences (Alpha-N vs Speed Density) between them and have a couple of questions if you will.
    My '05 Softail has an OEM MAP sensor. Do the aftermarket ECUs utilize this sensor at all?
    That said, in an Alpha-N configuration and with the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS) staying constant, wouldn't the drop in RPM indicate increased load? Granted, there is the availability of another "dimension" giving more precise control of timing and fuel when you include engine vacuum, but don't proper tunes account for this in an Alpha-N system?
    Lastly, as you increase in altitude, wouldn't the wide-band oxygen sensors allow the ECU to adjust for the thinner air to keep the AFR where you set it? So long as the system has a broad enough spectrum of adjustability to keep everything in tune, of course. Engines don't NEED to adjust to run richer or leaner at altitude, right? Meaning, would the optimum AFR at sea level also be the optimum AFR at 10,000 feet?
    Thanks again for the concise, thorough explanation of so many topics pertaining to our bikes. I'm a relative newcomer to H-Ds and your channel has helped me understand more about my bike. Sorry for the long-winded comment. I know you have more important things to do than humor someone on social media, but I've asked these questions for a while and would like your input or thoughts if you would like to share.

    Any option out there for both things? Could I use the SE tuner to flash the ECM and then hook a V&H for reading on the go purposes no for tunning? Without marriying to the ecm

    How to choose for a stock motor for example? Is it best to use the same size as factory, or go one size larger? Does Harley provide factory injector info in their workshop manuals or is the owner left to guess stock injector output?

    Hi Kevin-Screamin Eagle Race Tuner (SERT) 2009 black unit. 2008 FLSTC with Stage 1 upgrade (Vance & Hines Duals with Fish Tail tips with SE air cleaner with K&N filter). Have tried several times over the years to use the Smart tune option on the SERT to improve the various ECM parameters over the HD recommended Stage 1 base map (calibration ID 176AE106). Unfortunately when I integrate the recommended changes and reflash, the bike runs worse. What is your experience in using the Smart tune option on the SERT? His son didn't know anything about it and was simply wasn't into motorcycles. Bike seems to run very well the son gave me a case of Syn3 oil. Heard it's not the best oil but price was right. Bike has V&H 2into2 exhaust air breather looks like Ness big sucker ? I'm wondering if I need to go out and get a tuner . Like I said it's seems to run pretty swell. It's just an 88 I've put the screamin eagle cam chest end hydraulic chain tensioners with oil pump.

    My dealer mapped my SE Pro orange tuner purchased with my new 2010 Heritage. After cam change, air box and exhaust, the engine has always cranked differently than any other bike I have had. When you hit the on button, the pump does its loading the cylinders, and you hit the starter button, the engine seems like it if firing before TDC. So the engine does not turn over more than a revolution and it fires and runs. Is this normal or is the timing off. Will this hurt the engine in then long run. My dealer also keeps pushing the dyne tune. He say it will never run at it's best without putting it on the dyne. I am not looking for race power but I do want my bike to run its best without damaging the engine.

My question to you is if I have a power vision with stock narrowband sensors, will the “auto tune” option on the power vision be able to adjust the AFR to stoichimetric ratio and enable it to run correctly? Great video, wished I’d seen this before buying the V&H FP3 after replacing my pipes with Samson true duals. I’m now purchasing the power commander and having it dyno tuned professionally. Screaming eagle super tuners and V&H FP3 are only any good if you are doing simple upgrades like replacing end cans or installing a high flow filter. If you replace your entire exhaust system plus have a stage 3 high compression cylinders, forget canned maps, they don’t work.

S&S 50 state slip ons ( i can remove or install db reduces to be quiet). the new screaming eagle heavy breather and maybe screaming eagle power cam. I might go with the Hacker exhaust I really like the look and doesn't seem obnoxiously loud like most 2 into 1s. Hi Kevin. Just noticed in the comments two people where asking about the SE tuners one for the street and the other for the pro. You gave them two totally different advice. The street one you said go get another tuner and the pro guy you said get a downloadable file to record his data then make his changes with his SE Pro. I have the SE Pro Street tuner that has the capability already built in that can record data then use that data in the downloadable SE tuner file (from H-D’s website) to rewrite some charts to then download back into my bike. I bought this tuner because I bought the extended warranty on my 2019 FLHT. My question is do I need to go with another tuner when I get ready to void my existing warranty? I heard😆 that I could manually change some of the charts but others I couldn’t because of the EPA standards.

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  4 роки тому

      The street tuner does not allow the level of custom tuning as you stated...due to EPA restrictions. Yes you can data log, but...making desired changes is another story.

I could send you a power vision preloaded with a map that would be very very close to what you have there if youd like to call the shop tomorrow 6782269651.

    I know this is old but I’ll try. Have a 2018 road king special with cobra NH slip ons. No other mods yet and will prob only ever do a high flow A/C. So if caned maps are junk then what do I do with a flash tuner? Power vision or fp3? What should I do with those if canes maps are crap. Do you recommend a canes map then use the auto tune feature? It’s just confusing cuz you said auto tune doesn’t exist?

    My question is on tuners.
    I bought a used 16 street glide 103ci. and the previous owner did a major overhaul on the motor from bottom to top. After 2 months of owning this bike I snapped a valve spring. At idle. The bike shut down when I put bike into gear. After further investigation by my local H-D dealer and there master mechanic. For what I was going to repair damaged parts on the damaged top end for a few more bucks the master mechanic thought it would be better to put in the 110ci top end tire shredder kit.
    My lower end has S&S 585 cams with a dark horse welded crank Etc.
    the master mechanic said my lower end would marry the new 110 slip on tire shredder kit.
    My question is this bike has a FP3 fuel pack. And is quit overwhelming for and guy who knows nothing about tuning let alone autotune for optimal running capabilities.
    So with this new setup, would a power vision work best and give me my best optimal running capability?
    This will be just the license version from my dealer only.
    Hope this makes sense and thanks fir any info.

    Loved the video on tuning. Just wanted to know if you see any benefits to the autotune that systems have. I know it will not set up afr for cruise speeds, wide open throttle or make decisions for you. But is there any benefits to using the autotune features at all? Does it fix or get anything right?

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  4 роки тому

      It has value yes, but I have a unique perspective I guess. The further off from a good tune the base map is, auto tune has more value BUT...the harder the system will have to work to maintain tune and could possibly create inconsistent running conditions. If a bike is very well tuned, there is no need for adding auto tune. Stock ECM uses sensor data to modify fuel delivery based on atmospheric changes. In some cases, depending on the build and the exhaust choice, auto tune can be a bad thing as well...false lean conditions, reversion, etc.

  • @chregu2
    @chregu2 4 роки тому +3

    So if I understand you well, I have flashed my bike with a powervision tune (speed density) and I also installed their Target Tune (it's not replacing the whole ECM but it's a wide band closed loop system) module with wide band O2 sensors to target the AFR dynojet set in my AFR table, I don't really need to dyno my bike as the wide band sensors are always communicating with the ECM? Do I have to run some autotune sessions to optimize the VE and the advance spark?

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  4 роки тому +1

      You are correct...but with some stips. As long as you are confident that the AFR command is proper for the bike, as well as ignition tables, then no dyno required. Many only utilize a dyno to dial in VE tables anyway. And the in pipe sensor method is more accurate so youre better off. Yes you should run some auto tune sessions to make sure you arent out of range for the auto corrections.

I have a 2018 Harley Breakout with a Screaming Eagle Pro Street Tuner (came with the bike) I want to upgrade to either a Power Vision or FP3 since they both allow AFR to be changed. The only mods I have on my bike right now are an Arlen Ness big sucker and a VH big radius exhaust system. Which tuner would you recommend and why? Thanks in advance.

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  4 роки тому +1

      Youre welcome. I would recommend the PV3...the newest Power Vision over the Fuel Pack for many reasons. Mainly...you have more options and flexibility with the PV3 and it can grow with you should you do more later. It comes down to functionality and all the available tuning variables that come in the PV.

    If stock Harleys use narrow band oxygen sensors will a flash unit allow you to leave the 14.3 range AFR, or is it necesarry to fit wide range ox sensors to adjust outside the normal parameters?

    • @ericmowrey6872
      @ericmowrey6872 2 роки тому

      @Persistent Predator Thanks P. Predator. I'm just thinking the narrow band 02 sensor would compromise a wider band, flash tune programming insofar that these are a vital part of parameter readings read by the stock Harley unit.
      I'm not saying you're wrong. Powermax provides wide band 02 sensors that must be fitted for it to function properly. Why do that if the stock NBO2S can "guess" what the pmax control is trying to do outside the NB range?
      I plan on fitting the PV3 flash unit this winter. My otherwise stock 2011 103ci bike has Miller exhaust cans. This tame modification causes obnoxious deacceleration popping throughout the rpm range. It also runs hot at idle.
      I have two targets; 1) flash a program to eliminate the popping. 2) possibly lower engine idle speed to 600 to 700 rpm and slighty richen idle mixture for cooler running. I don't want to flash the EFI box if it gets confused by the narrow band 02 sensors...not sure what to think really.

    Kevin,
    I have a:
    2013 harley FLSTC w 103
    Stage 1; SE slip-ons and Synthetic AC
    Using 93 octane w 10% ethanol
    I have the SE super tuner pro. Installed map had the Stoiciometric at 14.6, and the tables were anywhere from 14.1 - 15.1. I adjusted the Stoic to 14.1 and the tables are now 12.9 to 13.8. Of course, this is out of the effective range of the NB O2 sensors, and the tables don't show anything in the closed-loop operation. Also: the plugs show that I am not too lean or rich, and could actually add more fuel. I have made other adjustments, but not relative to this question.
    My question: Should I install wide band o2 sensors, if so, what hardware would be needed and are they compatible with my stock ECM and Super Pro Race tuner?
    Thank you
    Peter

    Question - I have a 2017 RK standard. I am at stage 1 with slip ons and screaming eagle protuner. I Want to to put in a cam, probably a redshift 473. my mechanic really pushes the thundermax tuner. what i don't want to do is over buy a tuner-meaning buy one that does more than I really need to do. my bike is a daily commuter year around. the SE pro tuner sucks, I know that, but I am still under a warranty. where should I go from here when I do a cam? thundermax is expensive, but is it more tuner than I need? great video and probably provided more questions for me personally than answers :) but it was very informative . Thanks for your time and any advise would be greatly appreciated.

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  4 роки тому +3

      Good question. Do you have the SE Pro Super Tuner or the SE Street Tuner? Because of the year model, I'm guessing it's the newer "street" version. If that's the case, you are correct...that is a watered down system that definitely will not allow you to get the most out of the engine. If your bike were here, considering all you said, I would recommend a tuning license and I would tune it with a Power Vision. That would save you quite a bit of money and the end result would be great. If your shop isn't comfortable (or isn't familiar) with using Power Vision or something similar, the end result may not be as good as it could be. While i agree with you that a TMax is more than you need, if they understand that system better, it may be your better option. If skilled in both, the end result should be the same regardless of which tuner is used. Good luck! Be sure to subscribe too...i'll have more videos on this topic soon.

    Great video! I have a SE PRO Tuner (not street) for my 09 103" TC stage 4. I have never attempted to look into the tune. "Race" tune originally flashed by the dealer at the time of the modifications. I am now getting some pinging under load at 25%-50% throttle and its driving me nuts. Can I fix this with the flash tuner I have (SE PRO), or should I invest in a ThunderMax or other wideband capable tuner?

    • @KevinBaxter
      @KevinBaxter  4 роки тому +1

      Good question. There is absolutely no need for you to buy another tuner. The fix is actually quite simple and you can do it yourself. Use your software to activate the recording feature of your race tuner. Free download...just google it. While recording, reproduce the condition. Then look at the recorded data file. It will log all parameters including rpm, map, and knock activity. Then, go to your ignition timing table, in the rpm and map area you had knock activity, retard timing equal to the knock activity plus 3 to 5 degrees. Then, taper it off in the cells around it. Your problem will be solved.

      Yes...and no...depending on the system but for the most part, in simplistic terms, they take the command afr, look at actual afr, and along with input from other sensors, apply a block learn multiplier or correction factor to achieve desired afr.

    I didn't see where you have done any videos on carburetors so I'll make my comments here. I'm gonna swap my 74" shovelhead for a 93" S&S engine. I'm not sure about giving the S&S "E" that comes with it a chance or go to what has worked best for me, a HSR 42mm Mikuni. I'm also looking at a Lectron carb, which is a very interesting carb, but quite pricey to try out as an experiment. What do you think about the S&S "E" vs the Mikuni HSR 42mm?
