I'm in my 3rd week after a Left hip replacement surgery and I couldn't for the life of me get my mind wrapped around how I was going to be able to do anything. To my amazement, I was up and down the basement stairs and showering with very little effort in the first week. PT came to my house the day after surgery and put my mind at ease. Be encouraged, it is pretty amazing that they have hip replacement down to an art!
You are a GODSEND! I'm having full rt. hip replacement, anterior, July 6, 2023. I have ALL of your videos saved & am practicing hygienic moves beforehand. Bless you for your gift of empathy & wealth of useful information.
You are excellent!! I’m having hip replacement next week and by watching your videos several times I have calmed down so much and feel confident to handle these tasks. Thank you!
A cane upside down also works great as a leg lifter. I bought one to only use inside the help with in bed hamstring stretches several years ago and plan to use it as my leg lifter after TKR.
Love the videos, 6 days out from hip surgery, hasn't been terrible but everyday is getting easier. I was worried about the car seat because I have fabric, the garbage bag idea...perfect solution!!
Thank you for providing info on getting in & out of a car with a right hip replacement. The other videos I looked at only showed a left one which looks to be easier than a right.
Thank you for your videos. I'm getting my right hip done soon and nervous how I'll be doing everything after. Like watching you're videos they are so helpful. Thank you .
I had mine done 3wks ago. I dont have a walking frame. I was shown in the hospital to place my crutches with the handles together but pointing opposite way but side by side, so they are like a strong balanced walking stick. I got in on my operated side first slowly and held on to the handle above my head and the car door which helped to slide into and around in the seat. It all seems awkward but just try it if you only have crutches. i also find it handy to take some weight while starting to stand up from my bed or chair.
I'm having my left hip replaced - my wife drives a van and I was planning on getting into the backseat, driver's side using the method you demonstrated (but opposite of course). Thoughts?
I just came home from the hospital from having a total hip replacement on my right. There was a crack in the bone so my Dr said it will take a little longer to heal then my left total hip replacement. I feel very blessed with that. No problems at all. I had surgery on the September 29. I'm trying to wrap my head around it. I can't to. They to me not to pivot my foot on that side. I didn't have very much pain with the other but I have with one. A lot of pain. I just got home 2:30.. Can you show me a video on how not to pivot that right foot. Please and Thank you.
thats what I am thinking. I'm about to have left hip replacement. but I'm in the uk so the drivers seat would be on the other side anyway. I'll work it ould
Our SUV Ford Explorer has a high seat for my 5’ 8” frame. I’m using a short step stool to give me a bit of elevation to get settled into the vehicle’s seat.
I love all your videos, but no problem I can’t wrap my head around is that I am having a left hip replacement and it couldn’t figure out how I’m going to get in and out of my Lexus SUV. Thanks for all the videos you made on hip post replacements..
Can I ask you when you say keep above 90 degrees does that mean the knee must always be lower than the hip? and are we not allowed to bend the knee at all? its all overwhelming
I'm 4'11". I have bone on bone hips. Surgery not an option. IF I could get in my SUV I could drive. I can't figure a way to do that. I've lost my independence. Any thoughts?
Any advice for someone who uses a walker for balance/strength, but has the mobility to drive? He can’t put the walker in the trunk by himself so independence is limited. 🤔
Recline the seat, back up to the seat edge, sit on the edge (with L hip extended, but knee slightly bent to allow it to swing into the car. I’d put a garbage bag on the seat to make the pivot easier.
Depending on your height, yes. Low is going to be more challenging but as long as you recline the passenger seat and lower yourself cautiously with attention to the surgical hip.
I don't understand all the fuss getting into the passenger's side. Managed no bother coming home from hospital into a lowish car here in Scotland. I had to travel 100 miles to my Mum 's funeral two weeks later. Again no bother really with a few stops "en route". Not allowed to actually drive for six weeks, though felt l could have. Guess for insurance purposes best not to. I feel everything concerning mobility comes back fairly quickly. Wish l could walk further but have balance problems, l think due one-sided sudden deafness since 2021. Also Peripheral neuropathy in both feet after chronic Sciatica lasting two months also in 2021. Must admit though had a successful THR on my right side with General Anaesthetic. I had some unpleasant side effects for the first two weeks once home but no groin pain only scar "stingyness". Had to wait 9 months but have only praise and thankfulness for the staff at the new NTC here in Fife,Scotland ..🏴😊 Good luck to everyone here in the UK, USA and Canada awaiting your surgery. You'll be fine..xx
It’s pretty person specific. Typically a Walker is important for as long as you are tempted to limp. Once your strength has returned to the point where you can take normal steps with a cane, it’s safe to switch. Many stick with the Walker until they can walk unassisted. A PT can help guide this process!
@@EquipMeOT I listened to my hip more than any doctors or online timelines. It felt incredibly unstable for a couple weeks. Began using a cane after it felt stable enough. Even watched a video on the correct usage of a cane. As a former pt aide, I felt like I should have known. You’d think that you’d carry the cane on your affected side. But no. I’ve figured out how to sock it into my left hip to alleviate muscles on the left side. It’s bad leg and cane out simultaneously as a step. I was trying to use the cane away from my body. I was thinking, wow, ya gotta have an Arnold sized arm to support this wobbly gait. 😅
Yes! I really like those as long as you are comfortable sitting on them for the duration of the drive. They are not easy to remove once seated (versus a bag).
Hi there!!! I'm booked in for total hip replacement surgery in about 4 weeks' time. For how long after the procedure do we usually need to continue with these safety techniques? Thank you for producing this series of videos, which I am finding to be invaluable. All good wishes. Peter A
Depends on whether you have anterior or posterior approach. Posterior approach will have you maintain these precautions for 6 weeks. Anterior has no strict precautions and you can return to normal movement as tolerated.
@@EquipMeOT my lady is getting her right side done in December but with her having lupus things might get alittle complicated hopefully she’ll get through it 😬😬
This is only helpful for Right hip, could use some instruction for Left please, if you’d consider doing that. Otherwise, very clear and easy to understand the “why”, which is helful.

How do you keep the bag down? Doesn't it move around when you scoot onto the seat?
I have right hip replacement tomorrow. Though I have read about this stuff, seeing you demo everything is very helpful. Thanks!
You’re welcome and best of luck!

Lots of good ideas I’m about to have this surgery so thanks for the information 👍
You’re welcome and good luck!
Some of my rides to appointments will be in lower sedans, is it suggested to add a pillow or something else to raise the height of the car seat?
You can definitely do that or any seat cushion that isn’t too hi, you don’t want to bump your head on the ceiling of the car 😉
Thanks! Great instructions!

Can I ask you when you say keep above 90 degrees does that mean the knee must always be lower than the hip? and are we not allowed to bend the knee at all? its all overwhelming
Yes, knee stays below the hip, but the knee can bend freely without restriction.

Thank you,
What about the stitches on the hip. Will they be safe.
Thank you. Surgery tomorrow 8/28/23.
how do i do this when the surgical leg is my left leg?
Can you show a left leg car transfer please. Thank you
Thanks! I'm assuming it's the same routine for a knee replacement? I'm wondering if a minivan will be the best vehicle to go home in?
Yes, or something of similar height (like a crossover/small SUV).
Show left hip to get in and out cR
Ya how about the left
Instead of the front seat how about sliding in the back seat ?
