Thank you for sharing. My mother is scheduled for Hip replacement in April. She has both hips bone on bone with severe arthritis. She doesn't tolerate pain at all. The doctor told her not to exercise and I am concerned about how this is going to work out in the end for her. Last year she was seeing a doctor who said if she wouldn't do the exercises he wouldn't do the surgery. Needless to say. It didn't happen. Only reason I took her to a different Doctor was to get a second opinion, I never expected the new doctor to be willing to do surgery without her exercising. She is 78 with early dementia .

Thanks for the information. Very basic Prehab exercises. Just what I was looking for prior to surgery in February 2024. I work out daily cardio/upper body strength training. Hip pain is a factor, but these exercises hopefully will not agitate my hip.

Thanks for your video on exercise pre hip surgery and your other videos on the subject. My left hip has been deteriorating for about 8 yrs. now. X-rays now show severe osteoarthritis and 1 or 2 osteophytes. Pretty much bone on bone now. Surprisingly to me, pain has been manageable thru occasional use of NSAIDs when it gets really bothersome. I'm 60 now and just waiting for my surgery date; should be soon. Regarding exercise, I joined a gym in late 2022 and I've found that leg extensions, squats and horizontal hip thrusts (with weights) have been surprisingly helpful in reducing the frequency of pain. Post op, I plan to continue using these exercises (with much lighter weights), with my surgeon's approval of course. Looking forward to being pain free soon!

Thanks, great info. I'm going back in to have the cup on my right hip replacement moved so that the tendon is not rubbing against it when I lift my leg. I've been a serious cyclist most of my life but in the last almost two years, the pain in the groin was too much and I was told several times it was a groin pull. Therapy was suppose to fix it. I'm glad to finally have an answer to why I was still in pain but also that there are some exercises prior that will help me with recovery again. Simple and doable just about anywhere. Much appreciated.

Hey. I am open for a total hip replacement as well as removing extra hardware, as always it is really scary to have any type of of surgery and I have put it off for so long, I am in excruxiating pain, I feel like my leg is giving out when I walk, my orthopaedic doctor told me that it was the worse he has ever seen, and that it will be a 7 hour surgery. What I am most concerened about is the financial aspect of it, for I will be out of work for 6 weeks, maybe more. I am in so much pain that I am readily trying to prepare for it as best I can. Putting this surgery off is destroying my life. These excercises will help me..

Thank you so much. I was looking for some strengthening exercises to do before a hip replacement. I unfortunately have been very sedentary which probably weakened important muscles. Trying to put off actual hip replacement as long as possible, so hopefully, this will help do that. My doctor wants me to exercise and if this makes post-op healing better, I'm all for it.

Thank you for this video! The stuff I was doing in physical therapy was way tougher. They had me do the therapy on both legs, although the right hip was the one needing replacement. There was one exercise where you're lying on your back, and your foot was in a loop at the end of a strap and you held the other end of the strap and had to bring the straight leg across to the other side of the body. Man! Just felt that that didn't help things. Another one was I was also stepping up onto the single level of one of those step benches everyone was using in the 90's. I can manage that after a steroid shot, but about six weeks after, it's just tough to be stepping with the foot connected to the bad hip. I quit after about three months. It was costing me $36 a session, twice a week. I figure I'd save the $288 a month and do them at home since I had the routine down. Well, I slacked off completely 😞. I don't have a date set for my hip surgery, but now that I've seen that these don't seem too tough, I will be doing them until the surgery. I know I should be doing some exercises before the surgery. Maybe I'll add in a few of the less torturous ones from my sessions.

That is a question only you can answer after your doctor tells you to schedule the repair when you are ready. Some other questions to lead to that answer are: Does your pain affect you at work? Does your pain limit your ability to enjoy activities and social life? Does the pain affect your ability to care for yourself such as bathing and dressing? Does the pain keep you up or wake you up? Can you control the pain with less than regular use of pain relievers?

I didn't hear on this video if we should be doing these exercises on both legs or just the one being operated on? I'm sure it doesn't hurt to do both! Thanks!

I'm scheduled for a total hip joint replacement as I have NO cartilage left in my joint and I have plenty of pain walking around. I'm doing a set of 45 squats every day for my exercises. Amazingly enough, the squats don't hurt that much.

Where’s the abduction, extension, external rotation and flex ion with gravity exercises? The exercise given here are more for knee hab than hip hab.

No, the exercises do NOT ease the pain BEFORE hip surgery. You just have to do them and suck it up because AFTER the surgery is when you benefit.

After I shattered by hip AND the ass bone that it connects (whatever it is called), I found myself squeezing my ass cheeks (like in this video) just to relieve the pain, CONSTANTLY. Now I feel like I can crush a chestnut with my ass.
Apparently my ass bone is ok now and the hip is destroyed by an incompetent doc, I am gonna need a replacement just to walk. FML.

Those exercises look far too easy to do, even with a patient with severe osteoarthritis of the hip.. Perhaps a patient needs to hang onto a kitchen or bathroom counter with his hands, and then bend his knee and hip up and down as far as he can go, in order to strength the quads, as one of the exercises.
