As of this morning (dec 27) bambulab has removed the ability to revert your firmware through the handy app, updates to hopefully follow (you can still try, it may still show for some people, again need to b e on v1.7.0 or older to work)
CFW being a thing for the X1 series of printers should hopefully open up a whole new world of features and abilities on the printer, what do you want to see most?
Any idea if custom firmware will be a thing for P1 series?
Looks like you can't downgrade to 1.7.0. Only 1.6.5 shows up.

Wow! Wasn’t expecting this. Very interesting to see. I don’t have any major gripes with the stock firmware, to be honest, but it looks there could be some useful additions in this custom firmware. Thanks for the info!

as of right now, the CFW is boots off the SD card in the screen, so if you reboot with it not there, it`ll just run the normal OEM FW
And for now, the bambuhandy app lets you revert the FW version to a compatible revision for the install itself......for now
@@CanuckCreator I guess its currently basically linux live disc booting. I have to wonder what prevents installation. I know there ars mechanisms to lock writing that often become the barrier to work against on products like this.
If you're on 1.7.1 it is no longer possible to downgrsdey(according to the talk in FB groups). I'm still on 1.7.0 and not upgrading (LAN mode).

This is so freaking amazing @Nero3D 👏 I knew it was a just a matter of time before someone jailbroke the X1 and I hope they can do the same for the new bed slingers also 🙏 I reached out to them to see if they decrypted the original firmware to find the exploit because I still want to compare it to some open source projects to see if any GPL was borrowed for the original firmware placed behind a "closed source" veil.

Quite interesting, I didnt realize the Bambu printers are just running embedded Linux OS tho I guess that makes sense. I wonder if you can set higher bed and nozzle temps with this, I expect that you can 'unlock' the extra 20C nozzle that the X1E can do on the X1C. I just bought some QIDI PAHT-Cf filament that has recommended nozzle temp of 300C-320C and I wish I could get that extra bump.

Yes, he said in another comment that it’s essentially booting from sd card and when taking it out it’s just starting from the original firmware
i have a lot of bambu x1c printers and when i go to revert back in the handy app it just says no content for many of them! only 30% of them would let me roll back

So, if it boots from the sd card. Doesn’t that essentially mean that it’s something that can’t be patched via firmware (like with nvidia tegra rcm), but only by hardware revision?

Not possible, the linux is on the display only, meaning x1 has linux (even stated by bambu) while the p1 does not. Also the way that the bambu controls the steppers is different than on normal printers. The bambu does not have stepper drivers in a conventional sense. On a normal stepper driver, lets say a tmc2209, you have a chip that takes the input (uart, step/dir/enable, etc.) and with that information controls the mosfets. It also generates the sime curve for moving the stepper. On a bambu all that is done by the processor, this is also partially the reason why it has a 200mhz cpu for xyz motion. So even though you could probably install klipper on the display and mcu it would be pretty pointless as tge printer wont be able to do some thing.
@@kilianlindlbauer8277 Why are you saying this like it’s completely impossible? Klipper does usually handle things differently, but it’s still possible to port the code. Linux has a direct communication line (for controlling all motors from the display, choosing the print file etc) with any of the proprietary chips like the on the toolhead, so there’s a way to control the printer with ported klipper, we just need to do it.
@@maka6000 you would need to replicate the stepper driving software as well as find out the pinout of the board. Not impossible, but how long does it take to get equal performance? What about the "lidar" scanner? Also, what about the p1 series? No linux there, youd need a sbc or similar. A1 series would be even more difficult as they use load cells for monitoring belt tension and resonance. Yet developers still struggle to implement strain gauge reading for nozzle probing and clog detection similar to what a prusa mk4 has. To my knowledge they even strapped a mk4 toolhead onto a voron test machine
i mean, that is speculation but seeing what they did with their slicer i wouldn't be so surprise we get some kind of remix into a klipper host, it cannot be THAT much different...altough speculation i wouldn't be so surprised...@@kilianlindlbauer8277

just going on Nero's status in the community, it's likely the jailbreaking crew are talking to him directly and using him as a tester. And where is it? Not released yet except to those in the beta group

Awesome! I have been averse to getting a bambu printer because of the firmware situation. Hopefully the other machines are and to get something like this going and i can truly consider them. The printers are excellent especially for the price but I think this will probably sell many more machines to folks like me.
There are alternatives regarding the hardware alone. The software should be the only selling point left (besides the AMS for now) to consider Bambu Lab.
If you just want an enclosed printer: get the K1. If it can be open for PLA: there is Sovol SV07 or even the Ender 3v3 Klipper version and others out there ...
@@hassosigbjoernson5738 My experience, as I have both K1 and the X1C (and some other, older machines) - don't buy a K1. Apart from Crealitys support, at least my K1 will never print as good as the X1C, which is a working horse without hassle. 🤷
@@hassosigbjoernson5738 according to many reviews the k1 has some print quality issues, or at least did at launch. Requiring print profile editing and other tinkering to get anywhere close to bambu quality. And as far as open printers I have a klipperized heavily modded ender 3. The draw to bambu lab is the price to performance aspect which from everything I've seen (which is quite a lot) is unmatched in any other machine. As well as the "it just works" ease of use factor. Furthermore no other printer, to my knowledge, offers a legit competitor to the AMS or AMS lite. Definitely not at the price of an x1c or a1/a1 mini. As I said the proprietary software/firmware and connection to Chinese servers is the biggest factor preventing myself, and from what I've seen many others, from considering these printers as their next daily. I'd honestly much prefer to build a voron or ratrig but when looking at the cost and amount of work, a bambu lab printer makes sense to come first and be used to print the required parts and to have a reliable backup when tinkering with a diy corexy machine. All just my 2 cents, maybe to you the printers you mentioned meet your needs and from your view the software is the determining factor, for me that isn't the case.

So this explains Bambu's recent change to their terms of service when you modify firmware.
And thank god they did that. It would be quite stupid to replace parts under a warranty that were broken because someone had some bug in their cfw. It’s weird they didn’t do it earlier.

Depends on how it's done though. If it's actually custom or if it's edited Bambu "OS". If it's the former they can't do shit.
You say that like this isnt what every single company would do. If Bambulab doesn't, people better throw respect on that, because they are 150% within their legal right to do so. You better pray and hope they simply open source, even if not with a permissive license.
This could be very interesting! For sueing others they maybe have to public code from their firmware to proof their work.
I wonder how much code from Klipper actually is on that OG Bambu Lab firmware ... we'll see! =)

Jailbreaking give you full ownership of the device. You are no longer limited to what the OS/software (the warden) allows you to do.
Buy a closed source printer in a world with 1000 open source printers and getting upset it's closed source 😅

Yep, some people just like to see the raw data or for example instead of streaming camera through bambu cloud it would be nice if it was possible to just host a web server with video stream directly on the printer

This is great news, not even something I was expecting would happen. You mentioned running on an SD card so I assume it boots to the stock firmware without it? Not bricking my machine is obv a priority
As of now, that is the behavour, the CFW is running off the SD card and if you remove it, you boot into the OEM FW
I need 2 things from this, unlocked nozzle temps so I can run 450c for PEKK and the ability to control chamber temp with an active heater. Awesome

With x1e replacement parts hitting the market could you imagine implementing those on the x1c? Mainly the chamber heater?
It would be a more than just new firmware for that, IIRC the X1E has a different mainboard with the heater controller.

That explains why a couple days ago Bambu updated their warranty language to say that custom firmware voids the warranty...

They didn’t say modified firmware voids the warranty. They say that if something breaks because of modified firmware then it’s not their fault. Where’s the problem with that?
@@maka6000 never said it was a problem, Prusa makes you cut a trace on their newer boards to install custom firmware, which basically voids the warranty. Just thought it was interesting that they add it to their warranty language right before this happens, almost like they know what's happening with their machines...
You think they didn't know from the community that there was a group working on it? It doesn't take a three letter agency, if you are the owner and moderator of a discord with many users, some of whom probably discussing it.
That's cool feature. Though i think your warranty will void instantly. Also that's a little bit against that bambu vibe where you just buy it and it works.
On the other hand it gives great chance to create custom API for bambus, which opens a lot of possibilities. (automating stuff etc...) Running connecting Ethernet to it is also nice feature.

History repeats itself and I guess some of us will never be able to install it, reminds me of the switch modding til their iterations blocked the hardware workaround so sad :( But glad the community is working on such projects :)

If I understand it correctly then the jailbreak is not of the printer itself but of the touchscreen and controller? Hopefully this means BL should be more comfortable with people just adding functionality there, assuming the rest has some safeguards and most of their IP is in the ESP32 firmware... Not that it won't get dumped one day as well or grabbed from a firmware image once we have the keys. I wonder if this means the RFID encryption keys will be exposed as well? I wonder how this will play out, will we get proper X1 fakes from random Ali seller in a few months? Clones that work with Bambu cloud? Fake filament spools that were suspiciously cheap? This is what BL were afraid of.

You know that a leading zero can be omitted? 1.7.01 is the same as 1.7.1 - at least when it comes to version numbers.

Still running org firmware that came with the printer (will only update firmware if it fixes an issue I have or gives me a feature I need) still running like a dreammmmm :)
The very last update and the noise cancelling mode was a dreaammmm (😊) for me - wife can't complain anymore about the loud printer, as dishwasher is louder than the Bambu now 😂
@@MistrWeh the mrs is gone :) I now have Bambu X1c, Xtool P2 (& soon k1 max) setup in one of the rooms. Sounds like a factory when in there, but just close the door & access/monitor from main room(which is the computer/media/entertainment room) :) amazing how much money you have left when their not home spending it.

Same. The fact he hasnt shown a print is telling. We are also assuming you are running effectively beta firmware which will void your warranty if something goes wrong.

How were you thinking of implementing this integration? Using lan mode ? It may still be worth doing for those who do not want to jailbreak.
@@UnCoolDad using pybambu module that's part of the HA integration. Works in LAN only mode as that's how I run. Basically creates a virtual serial connection and virtual SD card to Bambi. Right now I have it uploading/listing/deleting files, monitoring temperatures, starting/pausing/canceling prints and got camera access using go2rtc that provides an hls stream for the control panel.

Only 30 seconds in, so I apologize if this gets covered later in the video. Do you print a lot of ASA or ABS? The glass on your X1 looks pretty foggy. I've heard that ABS and ASA leave a film all over everything in the printer. I'm wondering if that is what that is from.
Petg does. I print 90% petg and there is a film on the glass I have to clean off every few weeks.
That's why I run a HEPA & Carbon filter. FYI I have a Prusa in an enclosure.
Yes ABS/ASA leave a ton of condensate on the inside often the machine. This is also why you must periodically clean the carbon rails when printing ABS on the X1, or they start binding.
is P1S also running Linux so in the future the jailbreaking is also possible?!
Bambulab should be excited about this. If they let this happen and progress, they might even be able to reuse some of those upgrades !
They were so excited about it, they shut off the downgrade possibility to stop people using this

Latest blog post states they are looking into allowing this custom firmware at the loss of support /warranty.
So for the adventurous it will be an option. For the people who bought a stable macbine they can ignore it.

I believe the P-series printers don't have an SoC and don't run Linux. It is my understanding that all the "processing" work is done by an ESP32 of some kind. I think it will probably require significant effort to port this to the P-series printers.
I have a P1P with P1S conversion kit. I would like an aftermarket firmware in order to heat the bed hotter than 100 C.
The P1P is being worked on for Octoprint compatibility.keep an eye open.
Sounds a lot like RepRap...
I feel like the better play is to start with a Kilpper based Qidi printer. Lower cost and hacking thier Klipper configuration would be easier. Also, easier to revert if you need to.

@@TriptyX I can understand why they are staying somewhat hidden.
The #1 reason I don't have an X1 is because of the locked in Apple feel to it. If I could take it out of the cloud and use on the ground per say, I would strongly consider getting one.
You can “take it out of the cloud” as you say. Lan mode or just simply no connection and an SD card. An option to install firmware updates via sd card is coming so you’ll no longer need an internet connection at all.

What year is it again??? Also, I thought I recall people saying that Bambu printers started printing on their own even when "lan mode" was enabled. Also I think someone said you can't use the camera in "lan mode".

All of those are high on my list, as well as print data. But I dont even plan on using the cloud service, I think, just LAN (mine isnt in yet)
It's a webcam pointed at the inside of the printer. Don't stick your junk in there and you should be fine, lol.

@@xargon1234that could run afoul of copyright law, given that's proprietary code. The DMCA does have exemptions for "compatibility" I believe, but I'm unsure whether these cover making stuff just work on a competitors' machine.

I wish we would get an update on this. I need to know how to get back to BL firmware if I'm having issues with the custom firmware. Some folks are saying they are being banned on some sites for even talking about this subject. I went back from 1.07.0 because the the BLLED controller would not work on that firmware and It was more important for me to have that feature than waiting for more information so I downgrading to 1.6.5. I know that the BLLED folks do have there controller firmware working on 1.07.01 at this time.

Does it able to make the hotend breaks the limit of 300℃ and make x1c works like x1e to print some higher temperature filaments？And will you extend some functions like active cabin temperature control support to allow us add in a certain device to warm up the cabin？
