UPDATE: Dr Tao has spoken with X1plus and users will be have a choice of firmware: blog.bambulab.com/rooted-the-...
Firmware for the Bambu Lab X1 3D printer has been reverse engineered, with a community version available in X1plus. In this video, I take you through every aspect in detail so you can decide if you would like to try it. Even if you don’t we explore how having a community variant of the firmware will drive new features, like we already have with OrcaSlicer and Bambu Studio.
In preparing this video I have been as diligent as possible, testing the firmware by printing absolutely everything I could on it. This amount to around 40 hours of printing using various filaments and slicers. I spoke extensively with X1plus devs, and even discussed this firmware directly with Bambu Lab CEO Dr Tao.
This video was checked for technical accuracy by the X1plus team before publishing. There are so many baseless accusations out there that it was important to ensure this video was factual. All information is accurate to the best of my knowledge in accordance with the X1plus team findings.

I'd love to see this branch into an open source ecosystem for filament RFID tags. The current RFID tags that Bambu uses are nice because they automatically load a number of settings for that filament. Opening this up so other manufacturers can participate would make it a lot more convenient to use third party filaments on the Bambu. This may initially seem like a downside for Bambu Lab, but I think it would improve their reputation for printing third party filaments and lead to even more printer (and AMS) sales.

    • @absak

I think it’s fair for Bambu lab to have their „convenience“ advantage. They don’t lock 3rd party manufacturers out of their printer (like other companies have done)

My main reason for wanting to build a Voron over buying an X1 was just to have the option to change things down the line and not being locked into proprietary firmware/hardware.
This is a nice step in taking that reason away (especially considering I haven’t built a voron yet either) IF they find new ways to continue to allow this firmware going forward since newly sold printers will already have newer firmware.

6:58 I see the AP board has a serial connector, not sure if it's enabled as a console during the boot process or if the built-in bootloader is configured so it can't be interrupted via the serial console, but it might be worth checking (I don't have a BL printer).
If this doesn't work I guess there could also be JTAG pads (I don't see a soldered connector), although those would involve a lot more low-level work.
But essentially having unrestricted physical access to the device sooner or later people are going to find a way to "break into" it. If you're interested in this topic you could read "Hacking the Xbox" by Andrew Bunnie Huang for a very nice introduction to hardware hacking. From its own description: "Hacking the Xbox begins with a few step-by-step tutorials on hardware modifications that teach basic hacking techniques as well as essential reverse-engineering skills. It progresses into a discussion of the Xbox security mechanisms and other advanced hacking topics, emphasizing the important subjects of computer security and reverse engineering. The book includes numerous practical guides, such as where to get hacking gear, soldering techniques, debugging tips, and an Xbox hardware reference guide."

On the one hand, if BambuLab and X1+ were able to work together to come up with a "Core firmware + Addons" type arrangement, it in theory opens the door for new functionality to be prototyped off the main firmware, and merged in if/when Bambu decides it's mature and useful enough to have in mainline. I'd be fine with "Enable preview/advanced mode" as an option that would let me see some of the data that is currently hidden by the UI like you displayed with the leveling/graphs. And with official support from Bambu, they might be able to address that load time issue. :)
But on the other hand, I still worry that because the world is focused on subscriptions and endless recurring revenue that Bambu is loathe to give up control over the printer. We've seen a bit of backstepping on that with LAN-Only mode, which is great, but I'm not 100% convinced we won't have a bait and switch situation later with their RFID spools and the AMS...

Awesome that you put them in contact with each other. A lot of times, we fear what we can't see or don't understand. I want Bambu Labs to continue to be successful. They have to worry about cheap copies of their printers, as did Prusa. But in Prusa's case, they have stellar support that may be lacking on BL side from what I've seen in different online groups. So, if a company only provides innovative parts, once those are copied then it becomes a price war. Of course all of this is conjecture.

I get why folks don’t like the closed source aspect of bambu lab printers but IMO the best possible outcome of having a separate fork of bambu lab firmware is eventually improvements finding their way back into the approved firmware. Jailbroken solutions always seem a little tenuous due to the “you can’t upgrade the system unless we find other jailbreaks” problem. I hope that bambu lab open their firmware source so that we can combine the community effort with theirs to see more improvements for more people.

I am an Owner of 6 Printers... so far. And one of them is a X1C. I am working in Schools and have seen several Printers. By every Metric a X1C outperforms other Printers. The Quality is extremly good.
In 6 weeks i clocked over 500 hours on the X1C, i have already a Nozzle Set and the CHT Nozzle Upgrade.
It simply works and that is something it does better then a Prusa, Makerbot or other Classroom Printers and much better then Below 400 Bucks Printer: It works very easy and Beginner Friendly and you can go up to Midtier close to High Tier in complexity.
They use Prusa Slicer which is very good and their Slicer even kept compabitility to Prusa and other Printers.
They are Semi open in their Firmware and Hardware.
I wanted a Printer of Voron 2.4 Quality and looked at the prices and a X1C with AMS was cheaper. And the Supplies for parts is reasonable and there is already a 3rd Party Market, like my CHT Nozzle.
There is one Question: What Filament do you want to print: PLA and Variants, PETG
      Bambu Lab A1/Prusa Mk4
      Do you want ABS
      P1P with Upgrades/P1S/X1C/Prusa MK4 with enclosure.
The out of the Box experience at Bambu Labs is great, or Expensive at Prusa MK4.
Disclaimer: I never owned a Prusa, but i have two Prusa Clones, the one with High Quality Parts still prints great, the other.. not so. My first Printer was a Prusa Clone with high Quality Parts from 2014 and it's still running and mostly kicking for Maintenance.

I'm letting people know they can't do that, legally (in most countries). But again, that's not surprising, as every company does it. Not just in the 3d printing world. Don't play the victim for a company that doesn't need it, they make cool printers. Being critical doesn't mean attacking. They can't invalidate your warranty for a hardware part if you only modified the firmware/software (or they have to prove that your modified software caused the hardware failure... Which isn't possible in this case as It's basically a skin over the original software that still controls the printer physically.
This isn't something that would get to court, they'll honor your warranty way before that if you mention the law.
And I'll tell you something more: they can't void your warranty for disassembling your machine, or even for modifying it. They have to prove that your modified part caused the malfunction in the device... So your AMS hydra mod or whatever it's called can't prevent you from getting a stepper motor replacement. Or even an AMS replacement.
And I'll tell you something even funnier: in the EU, warranty also covers you f-ing up the installation or assembly of parts if the instructions aren't good enough. Not the case of Bambulabs, but something to note.

Hopefully this will give them the reminder that if they don't allow for it, people will break into it on their own. So if they don't offer an update kit like Prusa does, others will make money off of doing what they didnt.
    That's my hope anyways 🤞

I left behind Voron and Prusa to escape DIY... after years of tweaking and tuning... I get better results from my X1C straight out of the box... I will be sticking with Bambu firmware for this reason but I do understand those who want to break I mean improve their printers :-)

well, i have x1c, Voron, RR and a few p1ps, and i get better results with my DIY printers, you shouldve calibrated better :) Bambus are great though as you do not have to spend any time doing so.

Your DIY printer is only as good as you build/tune it. Some people like doing that, other don't. And that's ok, the market is big enough to attend both.

custom firmware? this statement makes me laugh as an embedded engineer.. boys unlocked linux via jailbreak, and used ghidra or some other tool to decompile binaries and added a few screens. this has nothing to do with a "custom firmware". the main functionality implemented by bambulab engineers is untouched and no reverse engineer will ever get it to a level suitable for the market. so let's hope that boys don't start to mess with that internal code as user could end up in a pretty f-ed up state. be careful.

Do you have any proof for those accusations? If not, then you shouldn't be making them, because you could end up in a pretty f-ed up state. be careful.

It is a custom firmware though. What are you on about.

@@logitech4873not really, it's not touching anything on the printers firmware it's a custom front end that is showing you data the stock Linux frontend doesn't, nothing persists so if you power cycle the printer those changes are removed

This is awesome. I have no plans to try it, but some of the features sure look good. I do hope bambu adopt some of the features of this open source firmware.

I’m glad Dr. Tau and those guys were able to at least chat about this project. Hopefully Bambu Lab allow this at least with specific warnings about the warranty being void if the option is exercised.

  • @ThantiK
    @ThantiK 4 місяці тому +1

By the way, in the USA - the breaking of the tab to allow custom firmware, voiding your warranty, is illegal. You can only void someone's warranty if you can display that their modifications are what caused damage to the device. Unfortunately many companies get away with these "Warranty Void If Removed" devices, but in the fact of law - warranties aren't allowed to work that way.

    Agree, we all benefit.
Thanks for all your time, hope it's still fun. And personally I don't care if you have some partnership/business arrangement with Bambu... or anyone else for that matter.... as initially stated, we all benefit imo : )

I very much hope that Bambu would be comparatively supportive of this. A piece of hardware with firmware options is simply more valuable than hardware that is locked down to only the manufacturer's system. End of life from the manufacturer is one obvious case. The risk that the manufacturer could run into problems and be taken over by an exploitative new owner is another. I've been planning on buying a P1S, but if this option is well established that would make the X1C a better value.

Really interesting development, something I miss being able to do with my X1-C is play with the firmware settings. I would really like to be able to see the return values from the initial filament scans. For example to see if settings are actually applied or to see if different build surfaces and build plate colors give different K values for the same filament.

I really like the look of the X1 and it has many features that I like and overall is a nicely built, compact unit but I wouldn't buy one in it's current form due to it being closed source, however this firmware gives me hope for a better future. Well done for putting X1 and the firmware group in direct contact, I hope they can arrange a deal that is beneficial for both sides and as the firmware evolves I'll keep a close eye and it may just sway me to get a X1 after all :)

Great video as usual! Thanks for this. As a FOSS advocate and a very happy BBL Customer, I am SUPER excited to see this happening. I understand the challenges that come next as BBL and the X1+ team find a way to coexist and move forward. I think a community driven firmware is a great idea and IMO will only help BBL as has the relationship with other open source endeavours. Sadly for me, at the time I first saw your video, my firmware was already at 01.07.01.00 which i take to mean, I will not be able to participate or take advantage of X1+ firmware. If anyone figures out how to regress back to 01.07.00.00 i would love to know. (Edit a PM from a fellow user mentioned that the current version of Bambu Handy allows a downgrade back to 01.06.05.0 but that this may not last long.)

The ability to augment the stock firmware with an Overlay / alternative OpenSource software is I believe a significant step forward in expanding the potential of this 3D printer. I am truly hoping that Bambu Labs gets on board with this as it could add another step up for Bambu Labs in the 3D printing space. Having a group that is both adding to and testing different ideas that BambuLabs can potentially leverage with future printers and also the X1 I would think is a great boost to the uptake of this printer. This is a technology return to Bambu Labs for a small if not a 0 outlay that I believe will see and return huge benefits longterm, on hardware that is well engineered, well crafted and widely adopted by people who just want to print with out fuss. Please get on board with this Bambu Labs and come up with away to allow both ecosystems to progress for the benefit of all.

I received a Bam Bu Lab X! C in December and have done a lot of printing on it. For the most part I am very happy with the print and software. I had a PRUSA MK3 and I think the X1 is more satisfying at my level of expertise, which is very low. Almost no print failures. The only knock right now is availability of Bam Bu Lab filament. I hope as January goes on supplies of PLA basic improves. Also have a problems with some rolls of PRUSA PETG filament reels and the AMS.
