In 1975 I was in sydney , melborne , canberra with my husband for the 1st time . Enjoyed the holidays v much, & the feeling there was very close to UK. Love visiting the sheep farm & the countrysides too. Happy Australia Day to all Australian ! ❤

Unfortunately in Australia, this Australia Day debate has been hijacked by the extreme ends of the political spectrum. Personally i don't mind a date change, but the trouble is, the advocates for a date change can't even decide which date to move to ! And the dumbest thing is certain employers (Especially government departments) allow employees to come to work on Australia Day, and then take a day off on another day ! (If you are so against Australia Day, you should not take a day off) As a Malaysian who is currently living in Melbourne, i also miss the Australia Day parade where people from different cultures celebrated together. Im ,Australian. Did many trips to Malaysia. Realised,National celebration Day of many countries are celebrating independence. Their country is free independence. Australia celebrates, when the English came to Australia and more or less took over. There is a massive difference, why countries celebrate their national Day.
Thanks for your comment and sharing your view. In reality, that’s not what people are celebrating. We just want a day to celebrate our country together, for all people. Hence the calls to ‘change the date’. Our federation day (when we became an independent country) was January 1st, 1901, which is a more appropriate day to celebrate. Nonetheless people probably just don’t find that a popular day since it’s already a public holiday (new year’s day!) - hope that helped explain a bit more. Thanks for watching.
I understand the feelings of Aboriginal Australians about Australia Day because it would be like deciding to hold National Day on 24 August (the date Melaka was conquered by Portugal) instead of 31 August (the date the peninsular states declared independence from Britain). The reason why there are no negative remarks about past colonisers on Independence Day is because they’re in the past, not the present, and the date is chosen by the independent people to commemorate that independence. Had it been chosen by the colonials to commemorate colonisation, the situation would probably have been quite different. What baffles me is why Australia doesn’t just choose a different day for this commemoration, it’s such a simple fix.

Though all of them speak the sama language and share commun culture, yet they are still fighting internally all these years about who come first and who come later to the country (over privilege or loyalty issues). I am happy that we live together as Malaysians in Malaysia though we still have some issues.
If you visit the Australia war memorial museum in Canberra, theres a small section about the Sandakan death match during WWII where 2000+ aussie soldiers died in Sabah when the Japanese army forced them to walk through the jungles. Memorial about this event could be found in perth,sydney, darwin as well.
Australia had contributed to what Malaysia is today. Both in blood (WWII & The Emergency) and treasures like investment and educations. Many older Malaysian in the 60s and 80s were educated in Aussie Universities either fully subsides or partial by the Aussie government. Aussie should be proud of what they have contributed to Malaysia. Thank you mates!

I’m Aussie (second generation) and agree with every word you said. Whether we change the date or keep it what truly matters is our attitude towards the Australian identity. If we keep on dragging our colonial past, we are robbing Australia of its true multicultural identity. You can literally find every single race and ethnicity in this country no joke.
I studied at Monash in the 80s. One day, my friends (all guys) and I were playing cricket. Suddenly, a few Aussie girls came to join us in the game. That would never happen in M'sia. I thought, that's why Australia has achieved so much, especially in sports. When aussies want to do something, they just do it. They don't care what others think. M'sians are different. What others think influence a lot how we behave.

it all started with allowing vernacular schools. chinese and tamil get to preserve the language (thus culture) the risk was huge but the gain is looking much greater.
As Malaysian, what I love about my people is we dont mind and not bringing 'cultural appropriation' issue when other races wear our traditional outfits. You can see Chinese, Indian girl use baju kurung for their daily basis. Malay wear Cheongsam. Chinese wear saree. As long as you have no intention of insulting other's culture, then everyone can wear what they want to wear.

Australia day is not same like malaysia independence day ! Simply because in malaysia british return the ownership and leadership to origin people of the land Malays and orang asli. However in australia the ownership was not given to their own origin of land aboriginals and islanders. They are prioritise but not govern the land. Australia system almost similar like British. Im Malaysian, somehow thought still guilty to celebrate Australia Day when we aware how unjustice the history was! Similar like thanksgiving. That’s the thing … Malaysia day celebrates their independence from British rule, whilst Australia Day celebrates when the British came and took over the traditional owners’ land.
That’s not what’s actually being celebrated though. Most people can agree that Australia Day is about celebrating the country, all people, and our achievements NOT the arrival, hence calls to ‘change the date’. The most logical day would be Federation Day, when Australia became it’s own nation, but that happened on January 1st, 1901 - New Year’s Day, hence the pushback to make that another public holiday. Either way it would be great if us Aussies could just get together and celebrate the country and our future together.

You enlighten me with your clear explanation. I never know about Australia day and it falls on the day the British ships arrived. If I were the aboriginal or descendant of prisoners, I don't want to celebrate the event. Maybe to get the Australians together requires change of date that can unify all Australians to feel it's worth celebrating. BTW I had a holiday in Sydney decades ago, fell in love with its beauty and weather. I was there during autumn. It's a city i'd like to visit again.

A nation or people who do not undersstand and remember history will only repeat the horrors of the past. If you live in Malaysia long enough, you will understand the aftermath of 1969 (the instigators are not brought to justice, and one even ended up as PM!), We brushed it all under the carpet for decades, all in the pursuit of "racial equalization". We are somewhat better for it, and Malaysia has transformed over the decades. And yet, we don't look back much, unless it is officially pro-political narrative of what Malaysia wants to be. At least in Australia, history can be discussed with new findings and changing demographics. Don't underestimate what you perceive as "broken" as the process of re-evaluation of history and knowledge is a civic freedom many in Malaysia do enjoy much of.
It's the narrative between the oppressors and the oppressed that makes the difference between Aussies and Malaysians. If the British monarch had severed ties with Australia after ww2 Australia Day would not be this controversial. Australia still isn't really an independent country today despite what we want to believe, the crown still has too much control over our identity and way of life.
Australia Day is not the same with Malaca ID day 31/08/1957. Rather it's Malaysia Day 16/09/1963 with the establishment of Malaysia Federation under the MA 63. Malaca ID days is the handing over of Malaca back to the Malaya Federation as the rightful owner of Malaca and the handing over of Penang back to Kedah. Australia ID days is also similar to Malaya Federation Days 2nd Feb since the Original Malay Federation was established on 2nd Feb 1948. So we celebrate the return of Malaca from western rules dated from 1511 - 1641 Portugal, 1641 - 1810 Dutch, 1810 - 1941 British, 1942 - 1945 Japan then 1945 - 1957 United Kingdom aka Britain. The return of Malaca was under the MA 57, while the creation of Malaya Federation 1.0 was MA 48. MA 57 allows Malaca and Penang to be part of Malaya Federation with both handover to Malaya Federation. That is why neither Malaca or Penang are under Governor rules instead of a Malay King which can be appointed if wanted back then.
The difference between Malaysia & Australia ie colonialism - the Malaysians got their country back, the Aboriginals totally lost control of their country & were treated appallingly!

First of all 31/08/1957 is ID day for Malaca, which was part of British Rules. Penang was handover back to Kedah but was twisted as a state. The rest of us established the Malaya Federation on 2nd Feb 1948. So we don't have ID days. That is why Malaca ID days is considered ID days for Malaya Federation. Then the Brits twist us again with suddenly we need to take Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. Which created Malaysia Day 16/09/1963. See how twisted our history thanks to the Brits. From 16/09/63 everyone ID days suddenly become 31/08 which is not correct for Singapore (while was with us), Sabah and Sarawak. Their ID days from the British empire was different. So now day we have Malaca ID day, Malaysia Creation day, Sabah ID day and Sarawak ID days.

Malaysia Day is a celebration of the country creation after independence from colonialism. Australia Day (and US Independence Day) however independence from what? You're the colonials. 😂 You're not being colonized, you're the colonizer. The colonials who separated themselves from their central powers to govern their colonies themselves. I like to differ, though. Australia was once colonized by the British, hence why they are named under the Commonwealth nations. Even so, right now Australia is practicing the Federal Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy, i.e. the head of the country is the monarch from the UK, King Charles III. I believe the Australians should embrace your national day as a day to promote and introduce to the world what it takes to be an Australian, i.e. the Australian identity. Having common things to celebrate and embrace the differences regardless of religion, skin colour, ethnicity, etc will truly bring out the beauty of Australia.

Though all of them speak the sama language and share commun culture, yet they are still fighting internally all these years about who come first and who come later to the country (over privilege or loyalty issues). I am happy that we live together as Malaysians in Malaysia though we still have some issues.

If you visit the Australia war memorial museum in Canberra, theres a small section about the Sandakan death match during WWII where 2000+ aussie soldiers died in Sabah when the Japanese army forced them to walk through the jungles. Memorial about this event could be found in perth,sydney, darwin as well.

Australia had contributed to what Malaysia is today. Both in blood (WWII & The Emergency) and treasures like investment and educations. Many older Malaysian in the 60s and 80s were educated in Aussie Universities either fully subsides or partial by the Aussie government. Aussie should be proud of what they have contributed to Malaysia. Thank you mates!

I’m Aussie (second generation) and agree with every word you said. Whether we change the date or keep it what truly matters is our attitude towards the Australian identity. If we keep on dragging our colonial past, we are robbing Australia of its true multicultural identity. You can literally find every single race and ethnicity in this country no joke.

I studied at Monash in the 80s. One day, my friends (all guys) and I were playing cricket. Suddenly, a few Aussie girls came to join us in the game. That would never happen in M'sia. I thought, that's why Australia has achieved so much, especially in sports. When aussies want to do something, they just do it. They don't care what others think. M'sians are different. What others think influence a lot how we behave.

it all started with allowing vernacular schools. chinese and tamil get to preserve the language (thus culture)
the risk was huge but the gain is looking much greater.

You can see Chinese, Indian girl use baju kurung for their daily basis. Malay wear Cheongsam. Chinese wear saree. As long as you have no intention of insulting other's culture, then everyone can wear what they want to wear.

Australia day is not same like malaysia independence day ! Simply because in malaysia british return the ownership and leadership to origin people of the land Malays and orang asli. However in australia the ownership was not given to their own origin of land aboriginals and islanders. They are prioritise but not govern the land. Australia system almost similar like British. Therefore, the liberation is not completely celebrated by people when having Australia Day. Im Malaysian, somehow thought still guilty to celebrate Australia Day when we aware how unjustice the history was! Similar like thanksgiving.
I know many people will not agree with me but the truth is truth. But, we see also how many aboriginals awaken after Palestine war, because they experinced the similar situation. Their rights their lands their resources are not for their people yet for us immigrants to steal it. Hopefully one day justice served for these people.

Im in Australia from Malaysia( working here), i bought flag and put all over the office .. sad to see many Australian are scared to even say happy Australia day .. really sad that to see people fall for this propaganda to divide the people here.
That’s the thing … Malaysia day celebrates their independence from British rule, whilst Australia Day celebrates when the British came and took over the traditional owners’ land.
That’s not what’s actually being celebrated though. Most people can agree that Australia Day is about celebrating the country, all people, and our achievements NOT the arrival, hence calls to ‘change the date’. The most logical day would be Federation Day, when Australia became it’s own nation, but that happened on January 1st, 1901 - New Year’s Day, hence the pushback to make that another public holiday. Either way it would be great if us Aussies could just get together and celebrate the country and our future together.

You enlighten me with your clear explanation. I never know about Australia day and it falls on the day the British ships arrived. If I were the aboriginal or descendant of prisoners, I don't want to celebrate the event. Maybe to get the Australians together requires change of date that can unify all Australians to feel it's worth celebrating.
BTW I had a holiday in Sydney decades ago, fell in love with its beauty and weather. I was there during autumn. It's a city i'd like to visit again.

A nation or people who do not undersstand and remember history will only repeat the horrors of the past. If you live in Malaysia long enough, you will understand the aftermath of 1969 (the instigators are not brought to justice, and one even ended up as PM!), We brushed it all under the carpet for decades, all in the pursuit of "racial equalization". We are somewhat better for it, and Malaysia has transformed over the decades. And yet, we don't look back much, unless it is officially pro-political narrative of what Malaysia wants to be. At least in Australia, history can be discussed with new findings and changing demographics. Don't underestimate what you perceive as "broken" as the process of re-evaluation of history and knowledge is a civic freedom many in Malaysia do enjoy much of.
It's the narrative between the oppressors and the oppressed that makes the difference between Aussies and Malaysians. If the British monarch had severed ties with Australia after ww2 Australia Day would not be this controversial. Australia still isn't really an independent country today despite what we want to believe, the crown still has too much control over our identity and way of life.

Australia Day is not the same with Malaca ID day 31/08/1957.
Rather it's Malaysia Day 16/09/1963 with the establishment of Malaysia Federation under the MA 63.
Malaca ID days is the handing over of Malaca back to the Malaya Federation as the rightful owner of Malaca and the handing over of Penang back to Kedah.
Australia ID days is also similar to Malaya Federation Days 2nd Feb since the Original Malay Federation was established on 2nd Feb 1948.
So we celebrate the return of Malaca from western rules dated from 1511 - 1641 Portugal, 1641 - 1810 Dutch, 1810 - 1941 British, 1942 - 1945 Japan then 1945 - 1957 United Kingdom aka Britain.
The return of Malaca was under the MA 57, while the creation of Malaya Federation 1.0 was MA 48.
MA 57 allows Malaca and Penang to be part of Malaya Federation with both handover to Malaya Federation.
That is why neither Malaca or Penang are under Governor rules instead of a Malay King which can be appointed if wanted back then.
Maybe if Australia promotes and uplift the Aborigines like how NZ does with the Maoris, the narrative can improve. I dunno.
The difference between Malaysia & Australia ie colonialism - the Malaysians got their country back, the Aboriginals totally lost control of their country & were treated appallingly!

First of all 31/08/1957 is ID day for Malaca, which was part of British Rules. Penang was handover back to Kedah but was twisted as a state.
The rest of us established the Malaya Federation on 2nd Feb 1948.
So we don't have ID days.
That is why Malaca ID days is considered ID days for Malaya Federation.
Then the Brits twist us again with suddenly we need to take Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore.
Which created Malaysia Day 16/09/1963.
See how twisted our history thanks to the Brits.
From 16/09/63 everyone ID days suddenly become 31/08 which is not correct for Singapore (while was with us), Sabah and Sarawak.
Their ID days from the British empire was different.
So now day we have Malaca ID day, Malaysia Creation day, Sabah ID day and Sarawak ID days.

I like to differ, though. Australia was once colonized by the British, hence why they are named under the Commonwealth nations. Even so, right now Australia is practicing the Federal Parliamentary Constitutional Monarchy, i.e. the head of the country is the monarch from the UK, King Charles III. I believe the Australians should embrace your national day as a day to promote and introduce to the world what it takes to be an Australian, i.e. the Australian identity. Having common things to celebrate and embrace the differences regardless of religion, skin colour, ethnicity, etc will truly bring out the beauty of Australia.
