  • Hey Folks,
It's Kevin here with a new video. In this video I walk you through all the steps to installing an exterior door knob. I use one simple tool that I'm sure you already have at home. You guessed it, It's a screw driver.
Below are links to everything I need:
    Schlage Door Knob: amzn.to/378JURk
    Multi-Purpose Screw Driver: amzn.to/3O0NHRq
I'm lumping door knobs and levers into the same category. And it is pretty much the same steps to installing either one. When installing a lever you will need to make sure it's the correct handing for that door.
This is not something I cover in this video. You may need to google it, or ask an expert at where you purchased it.
If you haven't installed a door knob yet, its super simple. It involves two easy steps...
First you want to remove the old door knob.
    Next install the new one.
Even though every door knob isn't built exactly the same way, they are similar enough that you would be able to remove and replace them the same way.
removing a door knob simply means you will be unscrewing it. This is typically a phillips head screw for the newer knobs. But every now and then you will run into a flat head screw for the older knobs.
This is exactly the reason why I like to use a screwdriver that has multiple head options in it. I want to have access to the tools I need, but I don't like keeping track of more tools than I have to.
When installing the new knob, keep in mind the direction of the latch. this is the first piece you want to put in.
But if the edge of the door is not recessed you will need to use a chisel to clear out just enough wood that it sits flush.
The chisel set I would recommend is: amzn.to/3xfWfOc
    Hammer: amzn.to/3jn6nwj
Take your time with this part and only take enough off that you need. You may want to test it multiple times as you remove material.
After the latch is in place start by putting the exterior part of the knob through the latch. There are holes that it lines up in. Make sure you go through these.
It doesn't really matter which direction the key hole is facing. This is your personal preference.
Next slide the interior knob in place with the exterior one. They will fit together snugly with the screw holes lining up. You may need to turn the lock to get them seated correctly.
At this point you want to give it a test run by turning both sides of the knob. Try locking and unlocking it a couple times also before going to the next step.
Get the screws started by hand. Make sure they line up right and are not stripping. after they are hand tight you can use your screwdriver.
Tighten both screws together. Don't tighten one all the way down and then the other. This will make sure they are going on correctly.
After the screws are installed it's time to screw down the latch. These are small wood screws that come in the set. usually the set includes four of these, two for the latch, and two for the strike plate.
Now its time to take off the old strike plate and put on the new one. This should be straight forward.
The main problem people run into here is the old screw holes are too large and busted through. If this is the case you may need to use longer screws.
Make sure the head is the same size and you want them to be "flat head" screws. often time the "gold" wood screws are going to work for this. just paint the head if you want it to match.
Use a long enough screw to go past the jamb and into the stud behind. This may be about two inches, or more. Go slowly when doing this because the jamb is damaged, and you don't want it to break more.
After the latch is installed give the door knob another test run. Close the door and open it again. Try locking it when it's closed, but make sure you stay inside so you don't get locked out, lol.
