John Mauriello has been working professionally as an industrial designer since 2010. He is an Adjunct Professor of industrial design at California College of the Arts.
Protip from older colleague: As student, do never over-romencetise working for big name companies, instead target specific industries and it's sub-sectors, it will allow you maximum experience exposure and career growth.
This will be very valuable to many people, thank you for uploading this
Great instructional video.
Great video. I think a lot will be able to relate to the struggles of getting your foot in the door.
I know that I do
I am absolutely newbie in networking, but your advice helps me get to the level I am aiming for. When I get famous and rich we have to meet for coffee (although I personally don't like coffee ;) )
I don't drink coffee either. But I do enjoy cookies! You can talk to me and a bunch of other designers on my discord channel right now (before you are famous and rich), if you want :)
@@Design.Theory sure, but in Poland we have night (1:50) so... Everything tomorow. BTW I'm receiving an award in a design competition tomorrow, I would be honored if you would take a look and give your opinion on the design. It's "one day design challenge poland by Roca". Me and my fiancee took second place :)
Interesting video. Another topic of discussion I think that's worth mentioning is how undervalued ID has become over the years and how poorly payed (in general) it is. I pivoted to Product Engineering several years back because to earn a lot more money and am now looking at UX as well.
What does everyone think?
It's just supply and demand. I think that on average, industrial designers get paid approximately 20-30% less than the typical UX designer. Salaries in the SF Bay Area is actually pretty decent for industrial design, though.
Where can i share my portfolio for a review.
on my discord! link is in the description :)
Have you considered having women and POC as guests on your channel?
Yes! I have interviewed many of them on my podcast. The podcast hasn't gone live yet. I also interviewed Jordan Taylor in my AI design video (the one with the shoe as the thumbnail)
